Vision Impaired: A Model To Make Vision A Reality For Church Plants, Dwayne Pedroza Sep 2014

Vision Impaired: A Model To Make Vision A Reality For Church Plants, Dwayne Pedroza

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Although begun with good intentions, not every church planting effort stays on course or continues to success. Church planting is uniquely birthed and has many areas that can become pitfalls as well as demands that challenge a church planter while trying to implement the vision; therefore, this thesis project provides a biblical structure to help church plants successfully implement the vision for the church. This thesis project provides a staffing model for church plants to give life to the vision and to enhance the survival rate of the church plants. The staffing model in this thesis project project consists of …

Research involving nonhuman primates (NHPs) has played a vital role in many of the medical and scientific advances of the past century. NHPs are used because of their similarity to humans in physiology, neuroanatomy, reproduction, development, cognition, and social complexity – yet it is these very similarities that make the use of NHPs in biomedical research a considered decision. As primate researchers, we feel an obligation and responsibility to present the facts concerning why primates are used in various areas of biomedical research. Recent decisions in the United States, including the phasing out of chimpanzees in research by the National …

Amygdaloid And Non-Amygdaloid Fear Both Influence Avoidance Of Risky Foraging In Hungry Rats, Earnest S. Kim, Eun Joo Kim, Regina Yeh, Minkyung Shin, Jake Bobman, Franklin B. Krasne, Jeansok J. Kim Sep 2014

Amygdaloid And Non-Amygdaloid Fear Both Influence Avoidance Of Risky Foraging In Hungry Rats, Earnest S. Kim, Eun Joo Kim, Regina Yeh, Minkyung Shin, Jake Bobman, Franklin B. Krasne, Jeansok J. Kim

Faculty Publications - Psychology Department

Considerable evidence seems to show that emotional and reflex reactions to feared situations are mediated by the amygdala. It might therefore seem plausible to expect that amygdala-coded fear should also influence decisions when animals make choices about instrumental actions. However, there is not good evidence of this. In particular, it appears, though the literature is conflicted, that once learning is complete, the amygdala may often not be involved in instrumental avoidance behaviours. It is therefore of interest that we have found in rats living for extended periods in a semi-naturalistic ‘closed economy’, where they were given random shocks in regions …

Treatment Of Pododemodicosis In A Geriatric Dog Using Spot – On Formulation Of Moxidectin Plus Imidacloprid: Case Report, Piyarat Chansiripornchai, Niwat Chansiripornchai

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

A 9 – year – old, 6.2 kg female Shitsu dog with a repeated history of pododemodicosis was presented at the animal hospital. The dog had been previously treated with miticides such as ivermectin injections and oral milbemycin oxime, but the clinical signs recurred every time after the therapy had been stopped. Microscopic examination of skin samples from the dog revealed the presence of Demodex canis. A spot – on formulation composed of 2.5% moxidectin and 10% imidacloprid was applied to the dog weekly. The dog’s skin lesions decreased by week 3 and the lesions completely resolved by week 6. …

Understanding The Yelp Review Filter: An Exploratory Study, David Kamerer Sep 2014

Understanding The Yelp Review Filter: An Exploratory Study, David Kamerer

School of Communication: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Reviews on Yelp.com can be an important factor in driving customers to a business. However, many business owners have expressed concern with Yelp’s review filtering system, which was created to flag low–quality or fake reviews. This study performs a content analysis of a subset of Yelp restaurant and religious organization reviews, visible and filtered, exploring signals from the reviews or the reviewers that might explain the filtering process. The study finds that factors intrinsic to the review itself are not related to filtering, but factors related to the reviewer are strong predictors. The Yelp system is much more likely to …

An Experimental Study Of The Implementation Of A Fluid Diode Inside A Sano Shunt, Patrick Austin Lane Sep 2014

An Experimental Study Of The Implementation Of A Fluid Diode Inside A Sano Shunt, Patrick Austin Lane

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Fluid diodes are fluidic devices that enhance fluid flow in a particular direction while inhibiting it in the opposite direction without the use of moving parts. This is accomplished through the use of nozzle shaped geometry on one side of the diode, and cusp shaped geometry on the opposing side. Fluid meets very little resistance as is travels though the nozzle side of the diode. The cusps on the other side of the diode reduce the effective flow area, thereby inhibiting flow. The objective of this study is to determine the effectiveness of a fluid diode installed in a reconstructed …

Absolute Quantitation For Mr Molecular Imaging Of Angiogenesis, Matthew John Goette Sep 2014

Absolute Quantitation For Mr Molecular Imaging Of Angiogenesis, Matthew John Goette

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Medical imaging is undergoing a transition from an art that is used to make static images of human physiology into a scientific tool that employs advanced techniques to measure clinically relevant data. Recently, the role of magnetic resonance imaging in cardiovascular and oncological research has grown, largely due to the implementation of new quantitative techniques in the clinic. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and spectroscopy (MRS) are particularly rich in their capability to quantify both physiology and disease via biomarker detection. While this is true for many applications of MRI in cardiovascular and oncological research, 19F MR molecular imaging is particularly …

Image Reconstruction In Photoacoustic Computed Tomography With Acoustically Heterogeneous Media, Chao Huang Sep 2014

Image Reconstruction In Photoacoustic Computed Tomography With Acoustically Heterogeneous Media, Chao Huang

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Photoacoustic computed tomography (PACT), also known as optoacoustic or thermoacoustic tomography, is a rapidly emerging hybrid imaging modality that combines optical image contrast with ultrasound detection. The majority of currently available PACT image reconstruction algorithms are based on idealized imaging models that assume a lossless and acoustically homogeneous medium. However, in many applications of PACT these assumptions are violated and the induced photoacoustic (PA) wavefields are scattered and absorbed as they propagate to the receiving transducers. In those applications of PACT, the reconstructed images can contain significant distortions and artifacts if the inhomogeneous acoustic properties of the object are not …

Regulation And Inhibition Of Pro-Tumorigenic Microenvironments, Elise Oster Alspach Sep 2014

Regulation And Inhibition Of Pro-Tumorigenic Microenvironments, Elise Oster Alspach

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Age is the number one risk factor for the development of cancer. While accumulation of epithelial cell mutations is a driving factor for this risk, the role that the tumor microenvironment plays in this process is now well established. Indeed, seminal work has shown that tumorigenic cells unable to grow in xenografts can form tumors when supportive stromal cells are present. Work by many laboratories has demonstrated that a wide variety of cells including endothelial cells, immune cells, the extracellular matrix and fibroblasts can all assume a pro-tumorigenic phenotype.

Like cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), senescent cells promote all stages of tumor …

The Burden Of Western History: Kansas, Collective Memory, And The Reunification Of The American Empire, 1854-1913, Matthew Gordon Stewart Sep 2014

The Burden Of Western History: Kansas, Collective Memory, And The Reunification Of The American Empire, 1854-1913, Matthew Gordon Stewart

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This dissertation, "The Burden of Western History: Kansas, Collective Memory, and the Reunification of the American Empire, 1854-1913," is a widely-ramifying study of the politics of collective memory in Kansas, where the Civil War can be said to have begun in 1854, where it unfolded in especially bloody and traumatic fashion, and continued to be fought in the domain of collective memory into the 20th century. The struggle over collective memory in Kansas is a story that disrupts the conventional narrative of Civil War memory as an ideological victory for the South and foregrounds the interrelated significance of several attempted …

Anger And Punishment: Natural History And Normative Significance, Isaac Thane Wiegman Sep 2014

Anger And Punishment: Natural History And Normative Significance, Isaac Thane Wiegman

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

I argue that the evolutionary history of anger has substantive implications for normative ethics, undercutting some of the evidence for retributive theories of punishment. In the process, I develop an evolutionary account of anger, its relation to psychological traits of other animals, and its influence on action. First, I offer a tentative evolutionary story about anger that can explain retributive intuitions concerning punishment. This explanation undercuts these intuitions as evidence for retributive beliefs by showing that they were selected for their biological consequences rather than their accuracy (concerning the value of retributive punishment). I develop the evolutionary explanation by raising …

Female Mating Adaptations: Salient Features And The Influence Of Fertility Status, Katherine Melton Sep 2014

Female Mating Adaptations: Salient Features And The Influence Of Fertility Status, Katherine Melton

Modern Psychological Studies

Modern human beings share the adaptive mating strategies of their ancestral predecessors, even though the adaptive environment is a relic of the past. Due to the large parental investment mammalian females must contribute in order to reproduce, women face unique challenges in their quest for reproductive fitness. This review endeavors to address behavioral, strategic, and perceptual shifts in female mating adaptations within the context of the menstrual cycle in order to yield a greater understanding of modern women and the evolutionary basis for behavior.

Cold Tolerance In Terrestrial Invertebrates Inhabiting Subterranean Habitats, Tone Novak, Nina Šajna, Estera Antolinc, Saška Lipovšek, Dušan Devetak, Franc Janžekovič

International Journal of Speleology

Most organisms are able to survive shorter or longer exposure to sub-zero temperatures. Hypothetically, trogloxenes characterized as not adapted, and troglophiles as not completely adapted to thermally stable subterranean environment, have retained or partially retained their ability to withstand freezing, while most troglobionts have not. We tested this hypothesis experimentally on 37 species inhabiting caves in Slovenia, analyzing their lower lethal temperatures in summer and winter, or for one season, if the species was not present in caves during both seasons. Specimens were exposed for 12 hrs to 1°C-stepwise descending temperatures with 48 hr breaks. In general, the resistance to …

Crystal Structure Of Clostridium Acetobutylicum Aspartate Kinase (Caak): An Important Allosteric Enzyme For Amino Acids Production, Mark R. Chance Sep 2014

Crystal Structure Of Clostridium Acetobutylicum Aspartate Kinase (Caak): An Important Allosteric Enzyme For Amino Acids Production, Mark R. Chance

Faculty Scholarship

Aspartate kinase (AK) is an enzyme which is tightly regulated through feedback control and responsible for the synthesis of 4-phospho-l-aspartate from l-aspartate. This intermediate step is at an important branch point where one path leads to the synthesis of lysine and the other to threonine, methionine and isoleucine. Concerted feedback inhibition of AK is mediated by threonine and lysine and varies between the species. The crystal structure of biotechnologically important Clostridium acetobutylicum aspartate kinase (CaAK; E.C. 2.7.2.4; Mw = 48,030 Da; 437aa; SwissProt: Q97MC0) has been determined to 3 Å resolution. CaAK acquires a protein fold similar to the other …

Data on the extent to which the sexes may differ in their phenotypes are critical for a full understanding of the biology and management of any species. We previously quantified behavioral differences and vocal similarities between genetically-sexed Australasian Gannets (Morus serrator). Here, we quantify size monomorphism and plumage dichromatism in this socially monogamous, colonial seabird. In comparison with other sulids, the Australasian Gannet is characterized by low sexual dimorphism indices in various size metrics, and most physical dimensions are statistically similar between adult female and male gannets. In contrast, we found indications of sexually dichromatic plumage traits in the melanin-based, …

The Domino Logic Of The Darkest Moment: The Fall Of Singapore, The Atlantic Echo Chamber, And 'Chinese Penetration' In Us Cold War Policy Toward Southeast Asia, Wen-Qing Ngoei

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This essay argues that Anglo-American memories of Japan's victory in Singapore in 1942, which British Prime Minister Winston Churchill labeled Britain's "darkest moment" in World War II, soon would underpin the domino logic within US Cold War strategy. For both American and British policymakers, Japan's war machine had fused together in interconnected insecurity the bastions of Euro-American colonial power. In Southeast Asia, it had imposed the condition that one state's vulnerabilities impinged upon the stability of its neighbor. This vision of Southeast Asia's interconnected insecurity was central to the domino logic within US Cold War policy. US policymakers' preoccupation with …

The Concept Of Yi (义) In The Mencius And The Problems Of Distributive Justice, Sor-Hoon Tan Sep 2014

The Concept Of Yi (义) In The Mencius And The Problems Of Distributive Justice, Sor-Hoon Tan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This paper examines attempts to find a conception of justice in early Confucian contexts, focusing on the concept of yi (translated as ‘appropriateness’, ‘right’, ‘rightness’, even ‘justice’) in the Mencius. It argues against the approach of deriving principles of dividing burdens and benefits from the discussions of concrete cases employing the concept of yi and instead shows that Confucian ethical concerns are more attentive to what kinds of interpersonal relations are appropriate in specific circumstances. It questions the exclusive emphasis in justice-centred ethical discourse on assessing actions, and even more narrowly actions of governments and other public institutions, and their …

Opportunities And Challenges Of Using Video To Examine High School Students' Metacognition, Rose Bene Sep 2014

Opportunities And Challenges Of Using Video To Examine High School Students' Metacognition, Rose Bene

The Role Of Emotion And Facial Expression In Synthesised Sign Language Avatars, Robert G Smith Sep 2014

The Role Of Emotion And Facial Expression In Synthesised Sign Language Avatars, Robert G Smith

Other Resources

This thesis explores the role that underlying emotional facial expressions might have in regards to understandability in sign language avatars. Focusing specifically on Irish Sign Language (ISL), we examine the Deaf community’s requirement for a visual-gestural language as well as some linguistic attributes of ISL which we consider fundamental to this research. Unlike spoken language, visual-gestural languages such as ISL have no standard written representation. Given this, we compare current methods of written representation for signed languages as we consider: which, if any, is the most suitable transcription method for the medical receptionist dialogue corpus. A growing body of work …
