Virus infection triggers a CD8+ T cell response that aids in virus clearance, but also expresses effector functions that may result in tissue injury. CD8+ T cells express a variety of activating and inhibiting ligands, though regulation of the expression of inhibitory receptors is not well understood. The ligand for the inhibitory receptor, NKG2A, is the non-classical MHC-I molecule Qa1b, which may also serve as a putative restricting element for the T cell receptors of purported regulatory CD8+ T cells. We have previously shown that Qa1b-null mice suffer considerably enhanced immunopathologic lung injury …

Paul Martin Heerwagen, 1883-1938: Southern Interior Decorator, Exploring Architectural, Ornamental, Social, And Cultural Heritage Through Interior Decoration, Antoinette Fiduccia Johnson
Student Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on the life and works of an early twentieth-century interior decorator from Fayetteville, Arkansas--Paul Martin Heerwagen. It examines the roles of interior design and decorative painting in the preservation of heritage. Specifically, it explores how the interpretation of interior decoration and architecture can contribute to our knowledge and understanding of the social and cultural heritage of the people who commissioned and used it. Heerwagen contributed to and helped to form the profession of interior decoration in the New South during his career as a decorator, 1883-1938. He implemented his interior designs and painted wall decoration in notable …

The Impact Of Fish And The Commercial Marine Harvest On The Ocean Iron Cycle, Allison R. Moreno, Arlene L. M Haffa
The Impact Of Fish And The Commercial Marine Harvest On The Ocean Iron Cycle, Allison R. Moreno, Arlene L. M Haffa
School of Natural Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Although iron is the fourth most abundant element in the Earth's crust, bioavailable iron limits marine primary production in about one third of the ocean. This lack of iron availability has implications in climate change because the removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by phytoplankton requires iron. Using literature values for global fish biomass estimates, and elemental composition data we estimate that fish biota store between 0.7-7x1011 g of iron. Additionally, the global fish population recycles through excretion between 0.4-1.5x1012 g of iron per year, which is of a similar magnitude as major recognized sources of iron …
Positive Hysteresis And Negative Hysteresis In Human Gait Transition, Mohammad Abdolvahab
Positive Hysteresis And Negative Hysteresis In Human Gait Transition, Mohammad Abdolvahab
Doctoral Dissertations
The present study investigates the dynamics of human walk-to-run (W-R) and run-to-walk (R-W) transitions. Most particularly, it investigates the difference between the critical velocities (specifically, Froude Numbers) at which walk transitions to run and run transitions to walk, a difference referred to as hysteresis. Its primary theoretical focus is expressing the dynamics that distinguishes between (a) the classically observed positive hysteresis in which R-W critical Froude Number > W-R critical Froude Number and (b) the recently observed negative hysteresis in which R-W critical Froude Number < W-R critical Froude Number. Four experiments on treadmill locomotion of young adults were directed at the dependence of hysteresis on (1) treadmill speed (constantly increasing or decreasing), (2) treadmill slope (0%, 5% and 10%), (3) concurrent cognitive activity (no counting, counting back from a given number by ones, by sevens), and (4) so-called functional distance (report of upcoming transition speed while walking or running on the treadmill versus while standing off the treadmill). In respect to Experiment 1, treadmill speed did not affect critical Froude Numbers and, perforce, degrees of positive hysteresis. In respect to Experiment 2, treadmill inclination affected the critical Froude Numbers but not the degree of positive hysteresis. In respect to Experiment 3, the more difficult the cognitive activity concurrent with treadmill locomotion the larger the positive hysteresis. In respect to Experiment 4, judging the treadmill speed at which a gait transition was expected when standing off the treadmill yielded negative hysteresis in contrast to the positive hysteresis when walking or running on the treadmill. The results of the four experiments were addressed through a synergetic model of positive and negative hysteresis adapted from Lopresti-Goodman et al. (2013). The results were found to be consistent with principles of self- organization.

In molting animals, a cuticular extracellular matrix forms the first barrier to infection and other environmental insults. In the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans there are two types of cuticle: a wellstudied collagenous cuticle lines the body, and a poorly-understood chitinous cuticle lines the pharynx. In the posterior end of the pharynx is the grinder, a tooth-like cuticular specialization that crushes food prior to transport to the intestine for digestion. We here show that the grinder increases in size only during the molt. To gain molecular insight into the structure of the grinder and pharyngeal cuticle, we performed a microarray analysis to …
Ethical Implications Of Catholic Social Teachings On Human Work For The Service Industry, Ferdinand Tablan
Ethical Implications Of Catholic Social Teachings On Human Work For The Service Industry, Ferdinand Tablan
Journal of Religion and Business Ethics
This study examines from an ethical framework the circumstances of workers who are engaged in non-professional services that are offered through corporations that are organized to serve high volume of costumers. Drawing on the relevant ethical teachings of the Catholic social tradition (CST), it explores some practices, strategies, and policies that could address the problems experienced by many service providers in the United States today. CST refers to a wide variety of documents of the magisterium of the Catholic Church which respond to the changing social and economic challenges of the modern world. The study argues that the primacy of …

An In Vitro Adult Mouse Muscle-Nerve Preparation For Studying The Firing Properties Of Muscle Afferents, Joy Franco, Heidi Kloefkorn, Shawn Hochman, Katherine Wilkinson
Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences
Muscle sensory neurons innervating muscle spindles and Golgi tendon organs encode length and force changes essential to proprioception. Additional afferent fibers monitor other characteristics of the muscle environment, including metabolite buildup, temperature, and nociceptive stimuli. Overall, abnormal activation of sensory neurons can lead to movement disorders or chronic pain syndromes. We describe the isolation of the extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscle and nerve for in vitro study of stretch-evoked afferent responses in the adult mouse. Sensory activity is recorded from the nerve with a suction electrode and individual afferents can be analyzed using spike sorting software. In vitro preparations allow …

Many brain regions exhibit lateral differences in structure and function, and also incorporate new neurons in adulthood, thought to function in learning and in the formation of new memories. However, the contribution of new neurons to hemispheric differences in processing is unknown. The present study combines cellular, behavioral, and physiological methods to address whether 1) new neuron incorporation differs between the brain hemispheres, and 2) the degree to which hemispheric lateralization of new neurons correlates with behavioral and physiological measures of learning and memory. The songbird provides a model system for assessing the contribution of new neurons to hemispheric specialization …

Development Of An Integrated Network Visualization And Graph Analysis Tool For Biological Networks, David Carbonetta
Development Of An Integrated Network Visualization And Graph Analysis Tool For Biological Networks, David Carbonetta
Theses and Dissertations
There has been steady increase in the amount of molecular data generated by experiments and computational methods performed on biological networks. There is a growing need to obtain an insight into the organization and structure of the massive and complex biological networks formed by the interacting molecules. To that end, this work presents the development of an integrated network visualization and graph analysis plugin within the Cytoscape framework. The plugin is capable of computing and visualizing a comprehensive set of dyad, node, and graph level statistics. The evaluation of the plugin on a range of biological networks and its memory …
