Development, Evaluation, And Application Of Spatio-Temporal Wading Bird Foraging Models To Guide Everglades Restoration, James M. Beerens
Development, Evaluation, And Application Of Spatio-Temporal Wading Bird Foraging Models To Guide Everglades Restoration, James M. Beerens
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
In south Florida, the Greater Everglades ecosystem supports sixteen species of wading birds. Wading birds serve as important indicator species because they are highly mobile, demonstrate flexible habitat selection, and respond quickly to changes in habitat quality. Models that establish habitat relationships from distribution patterns of wading birds can be used to predict changes in habitat quality that may result from restoration and climate change. I developed spatio-temporal species distribution models for the Great Egret, White Ibis, and Wood Stork over a decadal gradient of environmental conditions to identify factors that link habitat availability to habitat use (i.e., habitat selection), …
Pattern Mining And Visualization For Molecular Dynamics Simulation, Xue Kong
Pattern Mining And Visualization For Molecular Dynamics Simulation, Xue Kong
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Molecular dynamics is a computer simulation technique for expressing the ultimate details of individual particle motions and can be used in many fields, such as chemical physics, materials science, and the modeling of biomolecules. In this thesis, we study visualization and pattern mining in molecular dynamics simulation. The molecular data set has a large number of atoms in each frame and range of frames. The features of the data set include atom ID; frame number; position in x, y, and z plane; charge; and mass. The three main challenges of this thesis are to display a larger number of atoms …

Prognostic Copd Healthcare Management System, Piyush Jain
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Hospital readmission rates are considered to be an important indicator of quality of care because they may be a consequence of actions of commission or omission made during the initial hospitalization of the patient, or as a consequence of poorly managed transition of the patient back into the community. The negative impact on patient quality of life and huge burden on healthcare system have made reducing hospital readmissions a central goal of healthcare delivery and payment reform efforts. In this project, we will focus on COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) which is one of the leading causes of disability and …

Linking Masks With Majora: The Legend Of Zelda: Majora’S Mask And Noh Theater, Sterling Anderson Osborne
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The field of video game studies is young and requires innovation in its approach to its object of study. Despite the large number of Japanese games and game developers, most scholars in the West approach video games from a point of view that emphasizes Western thought and that is concerned with either very recent video games or the medium as a whole. The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask defies Western interpretations as its inspiration and aesthetics are steeped in a Japanese theatrical tradition that dates to the early Middle Ages, namely Noh theater. The game’s emphasis on masks and possession …
Mirror Neurons: Imitation And Emotional Differences Among Males And Females, Amberrose Reale
Mirror Neurons: Imitation And Emotional Differences Among Males And Females, Amberrose Reale
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The mirror neuron system consists of a specific class of visuomotor neurons, which fire for both observation and execution of an action (di Pellegrino et al., 1992), as well as showing differences for empathy and gender. Fifty males (M = 25.94) and fifty females (M = 25.48) watched short clips of a hand tapping fingers in a sequence in neutral and emotional settings. Participants were asked to imitate emotions while watching and repeating the finger sequences. A univariate ANOVA discovered significant differences in response times for males and females in the emotion trials, which were eliminated when empathy was included …
Martial Arts As A Markup Language, Thomas Vo
Martial Arts As A Markup Language, Thomas Vo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This thesis describes the modeling of Martial Arts as a markup language. Up until now Martial Arts has already been documented in books, videos, tradition and other methods. Though to represent Martial Arts knowledge consistently and uniformly in a digital era, we introduce the Martial Arts Markup Language (MAML), which is based on XML. Because XML provides a standardized, serializable and portable format, MAML also enables sharing among students, teachers and their peers across different platforms, media and networks. MAML provides the ability, with appropriate XML tools, to document a Martial Arts style in a structured way. To achieve this, …
Methionine Sulfoxide Reductase (Msr) Deficiency Leads To A Reduction Of Dopamine Levels In Drosophila, Caesar Hernandez
Methionine Sulfoxide Reductase (Msr) Deficiency Leads To A Reduction Of Dopamine Levels In Drosophila, Caesar Hernandez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Biological homeostasis relies on protective mechanisms that respond to cellular oxidation caused primarily by free radical reactions. Methionine sulfoxide reductases (Msr) are a class of enzymes that reverse oxidative damage to methionine in proteins. The focus of this study is on the relationship between Msr and dopamine levels in Drosophila. Dopaminergic neurons in Drosophila have comparable roles to those found in humans. A deficit in dopamine leads to the onset of many neurological disorders including the loss of fine motor control—a neurodegenerative condition characteristic of Parkinson’s disease (PD). We found that dopamine levels in the heads of MsrAΔ/ΔBΔ/Δ mutants are …

Mapping Wetland Vegetation With Lidar In Everglades National Park, Florida, Usa, Stoppelaire Georgia H De
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Knowledge of the geospatial distribution of vegetation is fundamental for resource management. The objective of this study is to investigate the possible use of airborne LIDAR (light detection and ranging) data to improve classification accuracy of high spatial resolution optical imagery and compare the ability of two classification algorithms to accurately identify and map wetland vegetation communities. In this study, high resolution imagery integrated with LIDAR data was compared jointly and alone; and the nearest neighbor (NN) and machine learning random forest (RF) classifiers were assessed in semi-automated geographic object-based image analysis (GEOBIA) approaches for classification accuracy of heterogeneous vegetation …
Minority Representation In Popular Culture, Jeffrey Miller
Minority Representation In Popular Culture, Jeffrey Miller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This thesis focuses on the continuous misrepresentations that appear throughout different outlets of popular culture and the negative impacts of these misrepresentations. In the first chapter, the focus will be on the films The Last of the Mohicans and The Mission and the origins and implications of the misrepresentation of Indians in film. The second chapter uses rap music videos such as 50 Cent’s In Da Club, Nelly’s Tip Drill, LMFAO and Lil John’s Shots, Where Da Hood At, Tupac’s Hit ‘Em up, and N.W.A.’s Straight Outta Compton as primary texts to demonstrate the one dimensional and problematic representations of …

Characterization Of Symbiotic Algae, Genus Symbiodinium, In Corals At St. Lucie Reef, Florida, Courtney Klepac
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The unique coral reef at St. Lucie Reef (Stuart, FL) persists despite environmental variability from extensive freshwater discharges, summer upwelling, and thermal instability. By examining the symbiotic zooxanthellae, or Symbiodinium, that reside in corals, we can gain insight to coral physiology impacted by local stressors. Two scleractinian corals, Montastraea cavernosa and Pseudodiploria clivosa were sampled over 1.5 years, including both wet and dry seasons. Zooxanthellae were isolated and quantitatively characterized using standard measurements and molecular techniques. Both coral species varied in zooxanthellae biomass, where Pseudodiploria clivosa had Higher cell densities and chlorophyll concentrations than Montastraea cavernosa. Over time, these parameters …
Characterization Of Receptor Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase Ptp69d In The Giant Fiber Circuit, Latasha Hoskins Lee
Characterization Of Receptor Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase Ptp69d In The Giant Fiber Circuit, Latasha Hoskins Lee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
PTP69D is a receptor protein tyrosine phosphatase (RPTP) with two intracellular catalytic domains (Cat1 and Cat2), which has been shown to play a role in axon outgrowth and guidance of embryonic motorneurons, as well as targeting of photoreceptor neurons in the visual system of Drosophila melanogaster. Here, we characterized the developmental role of PTP69D in the giant fiber (GF) neurons; two interneurons in the central nervous system (CNS) that control the escape response of the fly. In addition to guidance and targeting functions, our studies reveal an additional role for PTP69D in synaptic terminal growth in the CNS. We found …
Manjako Literacy And Issues In Language Of Instruction, Miles Avery Pearson
Manjako Literacy And Issues In Language Of Instruction, Miles Avery Pearson
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Students in Caio, Guinea-Bissau cannot read. This is due largely to the mismatch between the language at home and the language of instruction in schools. Students in Caio speak Manjako, but classes are taught in Portuguese, the official language, which students do not understand. This makes it more difficult for students to develop literacy skills and succeed in school. Literature shows that literacy is achieved best when it is taught to students in their mother tongue. This project involved creating and testing Manjako literacy materials and concludes with recommendations for implementing a Manjako literacy program. The materials included flashcards, sample …

Humor Works In Funny Ways: Examining Satirical Tone As A Key Determinant In Political Humor Message Processing, Heather L. Lamarre, Kristen D. Landreville, Dannagal Young, Nathan Gilkerson
College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications
This multi-experiment study builds upon extant political entertainment theory, testing whether satire type (horatian versus juvenalian) cues varying processing mechanisms (message discounting versus resource allocation), and if consequential differences to argument scrutiny levels or message persuasiveness result. Using novel stimuli (e.g., animated cartoons, study one) and real-world late-night political satire (The Daily Show and The Colbert Report, study two), results suggest that satire type was a key antecedent in political humor message processing. Additionally, the varying mechanisms had differential effects on political argument scrutiny levels and message persuasiveness.
How Corporations Manage Industry And Consumer Expectations Via The Csr Report, Sarah Bonewits Feldner, Kati Tusinski Berg
How Corporations Manage Industry And Consumer Expectations Via The Csr Report, Sarah Bonewits Feldner, Kati Tusinski Berg
College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications
With increased stakeholder scrutiny, it is increasingly salient to consider how corporations make the case that their CSR activities are sufficient, appropriate, and successful. The CSR report is the vehicle by which organizations communicate the breadth of activities they engage in to make a difference in society. Using rhetorical analysis and surveys, we argue that the CSR report functions as a means by which corporations manage stakeholder expectations and seek to legitimate corporate behaviors. Our findings indicate that most reports are structured based on external guidelines but include the use of classic rhetorical strategies of ethos, pathos, and logos to …

The Short-Term Effects Of A Routine Poisoning Campaign On The Movements And Detectability Of A Social Top-Predator., B L. Allen, R. M. Engeman, L. K-P. Leung
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Top-predators can be important components of resilient ecosystems, but they are still controlled in many places to mitigate a variety of economic, environmental and/or social impacts. Lethal control is often achieved through the broadscale application of poisoned baits. Understanding the direct and indirect effects of such lethal control on subsequent movements and behaviour of survivors is an important pre-requisite for interpreting the efficacy and ecological outcomes of top predator control. In this study, we use GPS tracking collars to investigate the fine-scale and short-term movements of dingoes (Canis lupus dingo and other wild dogs) in response to a routine poison-baiting …

New Rodenticides: An Update On Recent Research Trials, Gary W. Witmer, Katherine E. Horak, Rachel Moulton
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Rodents cause substantial amounts of damage and losses of foodstuffs around the world. While various methods are used to reduce damage and losses to rodents, rodenticides remain the most important tool in the toolbox. However, like all tools, rodenticides have advantages and disadvantages. Several considerations are shaping the future of rodenticide use. These include manufacturing and registration costs, concern about toxicity levels and non-target animal hazards, potential hazards to children, reduced effectiveness of some formulations, and humaneness to the targeted rodents. While there have been very few new developments in rodenticides in the last several decades, new formulations and active …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Most birds are able to sense ultraviolet (UV) visual signals. Ultraviolet wavelengths are used for plumage signaling and sexual selection among birds. The aim of our study was to determine if UV cues are also used for the process of food selection in wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo). We used avoidance conditioning to test the hypothesis that UV feeding cues can be used functionally for foraging behavior in wild turkeys. Female turkeys exhibited no avoidance of untreated food and 75–98% avoidance of food treated with an UV-absorbent, postingestive repellent (0.5–4% anthraquinone; wt./wt.) during repellent exposure. Male turkeys exhibited 78–99% avoidance of …

Wildlife Strikes With Military Rotary-Wing Aircraft During Flight Operations Within The United States, Brian E. Washburn, Paul J. Cisar, Travis L. Devault
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Wildlife–aircraft collisions (wildlife strikes) with civilian and military aircraft pose notable risks and economic losses. The 4 military services within the U.S. Department of Defense maintain records regarding wildlife strikes with military aircraft. Although rotary-wing aircraft operations comprise important mission components within all 4 military services, no assessment of wildlife strikes to military rotary-wing aircraft has been conducted. The objectives of this project were to 1) conduct a comprehensive analysis of data available from all military services regarding wildlife strikes with rotary-wing aircraft, and 2) provide recommendations to reduce the frequency and negative impacts of these strikes. We acquired all …

Animal Attendance At M-44 Sodium Cyanide Ejector Sites For Coyotes, John A. Shivik, Lauren Mastro, Julie K. Young
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Sodium cyanide (NaCN) ejectors for coyotes (Canis latrans), known as M-44s, are used in many parts of the United States for lethally removing coyotes to protect livestock or other resources. Quantifying selectivity of current devices in killing target and non-target species is important to users and provides a baseline for future development of more effective and selective techniques. We used motion-activated cameras to monitor M-44 locations for coyote and other species visitations to the sites. Because camera presence potentially influences coyote behavior, we first compared activation of M-44s at paired sites where cameras were and were not present. Coyotes activated …

Biology And Impacts Of Pacific Island Invasive Species. 11. Rattus Rattus, The Black Rat (Rodentia: Muridae), Aaron B. Shiels, William C. Pitt, Robert T. Sugihara, Gary W. Witmer
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
The black rat, roof rat, or ship rat (Rattus rattus L.) is among the most widespread invasive vertebrates on islands and continents, and it is nearly ubiquitous on Pacific islands from the equatorial tropics to approximately 55 degrees latitude north and south. It survives well in human-dominated environments, natural areas, and islands where humans are not present. Rattus rattus is typically the most common invasive rodent in insular forests. Few vertebrates are more problematic to island biota and human livelihoods than R. rattus; it is well known to damage crops and stored foods, kill native species, and serve as a …

In the United States, new regulations on second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides will likely be offset by expanded use of first-generation anticoagulant rodenticides. In the present study, eastern screech-owls (Megascops asio) were fed 10 mg diphacinone/g wet weight food for 7 d, and recovery was monitored over a 21-d postexposure period. By day 3 of exposure, diphacinone (DPN) was detected in liver (1.63 mg/g wet wt) and kidney (5.83 mg/g) and coagulopathy was apparent. By day 7, prothrombin time (PT) and Russell’s viper venom time (RVVT) were prolonged, and some individuals were anemic. Upon termination of exposure, coagulopathy and anemia were resolved …

Detecting An Elusive Invasive Species: A Diagnostic Pcr To Detect Burmese Python In Florida Waters And An Assessment Of Persistence Of Environmental Dna, Antoinette J. Piaggio, Richard M. Engeman, Matthew W. Hopken, John S. Humphrey, Kandy L. Keacher, William E. Bruce, Michael L. Avery
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Recent studies have demonstrated that detection of environmental DNA (eDNA) from aquatic vertebrates in water bodies is possible. The Burmese python, Python bivittatus, is a semi-aquatic, invasive species in Florida where its elusive nature and cryptic coloration make its detection difficult. Our goal was to develop a diagnostic PCR to detect P. bivittatus from water-borne eDNA, which could assist managers in monitoring this invasive species. First, we used captive P. bivittatus to determine whether reptilian DNA could be isolated and amplified from water samples. We also evaluated the efficacy of two DNA isolation methods and two DNA extraction kits commonly …
A Landscape-Based Approach For Delineating Hotspots Of Wildlife-Vehicle Collisions, Nathan P. Snow, David M. Williams, William F. Porter
A Landscape-Based Approach For Delineating Hotspots Of Wildlife-Vehicle Collisions, Nathan P. Snow, David M. Williams, William F. Porter
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Imposing human perceptions about the scales of ecological processes can produce unreliable scientific inferences in wildlife research and possibly misinform mitigation strategies. An example of this disconnect occurs in studies of wildlife-vehicle collisions (WVCs). Subjective procedures are often used to delineate hotspots of WVCs, resulting in hotspots that are not spatially independent. We developed a new approach that identifies independent hotspots using attributes of the landscape to inform delineations instead of subjective measures. First, we generated a candidate set of grouping scenarios using unique combinations of kernel-density estimation parameterization (i.e., bandwidth and isopleth values). Next, we associated the groups of …

Heterogeneous Immunological Landscapes And Medieval Plague : An Invitation To A New Dialogue Between Historians And Immunologists., Fabian Crespo, Matthew B. Lawrenz
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Efforts to understand the differential mortality caused by plague must account for many factors, including human immune responses. In this essay we are particularly interested in those people who were exposed to the Yersinia pestis pathogen during the Black Death, but who had differing fates—survival or death—that could depend on which individuals (once infected) were able to mount an appropriate immune response as a result of biological, environmental, and social factors. The proposed model suggests that historians of the medieval world could make a significant contribution to the study of human health, and especially the role of human immunology in …

Theses and Dissertations
The variety of mobile devices and their operating platforms has rapidly increased. With this increase come separate standards, programming languages, and distribution markets. Typically developers want to deliver their products to a variety of users encompassing various platforms; however choosing to develop using a native program for a platform can delay the development and release on another platform. Multi-platform development applications were created in order to deploy applications to various platforms in a more timely and cost efficient manner by using a single code base.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the multi-platform development applications MoSync, Appcelerator, and …
Study Of The Suit Inflation Effect On Crew Safety During Landing Using A Full-Pressure Iva Suit For New-Generation Reentry Space Vehicles, Suzuki Wataru
Theses and Dissertations
Recently, manned space capsules have been recognized as beneficial and reasonable human space vehicles again. The Dragon capsule already achieved several significant successes. The Orion capsule is going to be sent to a high-apogee orbit without crews for experimental purposes in September 2014. For such human-rated space capsules, the study of acceleration impacts against the human body during splashdown is essential to ensure the safety of crews. Moreover, it is also known that wearing a full pressure rescue suit significantly increases safety of a crew, compared to wearing a partial pressure suit. This is mainly because it enables the use …

The use of recently developed genetic engineering tools in combination with organisms that have the potential to produce precursors for the production of biodiesel, promises a sustainable and environment friendly energy source. Enhanced lipid production in wild type and/or genetically engineered organisms can offer sufficient raw material for industrial transesterification of plant-based triglycerides. Bio-diesel, produced with the help of genetically modified organisms, might be one of the best alternatives to fossil fuels and to mitigate various environmental hazards.

Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Legal research is complicated by the growing amount of information available, and there is evidence that legal practitioners require additional training in order to enhance their information literacy and legal research skills. Librarians have a key role to play in developing legal research training, and examples taken from Middle Temple's library are used to illustrate ways in which librarians can offer beneficial training to their library users. This involves assessing the skills, motivation, and needs of the average library user in order to design legal research training that is educationally sound and appealing to the target audience.
Restoration, Presence And Computer Use: How Computer Displays Incorporating Restorative Environments Effect Users' Sense Of Restoration And Presence, Jacob Bell
Theses and Dissertations
Recent technological advances provide opportunities for computer users to replace
desktop pictures with dynamic, audio-visual recordings. Such advances provide researchers with opportunities to better understand how specific video content may effect users' sense of restoration and presence. As described within Attention Restoration Theory, those perceiving restorative environments, which are found primarily within nature-based environments, experience a sense of restoration. Yet, prior research has largely focused on singular, and to an extent, non-interactive displays of restorative environments. The current research further investigated the restorative potential of environments having incorporated interactive, computer-based displays, with animated audio-visual environments. Participants were assigned to either …
