The Secret Life Of The Cross-Cultural Fairy Tale: A Comparative Study Of The Indonesian Folktale "Bawang Merah, Bawang Putih" And Three European Fairy Tales, Sarah Nicole Donaldson Jan 2014

The Secret Life Of The Cross-Cultural Fairy Tale: A Comparative Study Of The Indonesian Folktale "Bawang Merah, Bawang Putih" And Three European Fairy Tales, Sarah Nicole Donaldson

University Honors Theses

Folklore was one of the earliest developed forms of story telling, and fairy tales especially remain influentially pervasive in society today. In this paper, I seek to deconstruct five versions of the Indonesian folktale "Bawang Merah, Bawang Putih," through comparisons with the European fairy tales "One-Eye, Two-Eyes, and Three-Eyes," "The Fairies," and "Mother Holle," using an interdisciplinary approach incorporating psychoanalytic and feminist theories in a close reading of the tales. Through tracking the transfer of money in the tales, I establish that heroines rarely keep their money as young, marriageable girls are considered commodities themselves within the fairy tale world. …

"L'Affaire Des Princes": Baroque Architecture And Factional Politics In Regency Paris, 1715-1723, Jordan Hallmark Jan 2014

"L'Affaire Des Princes": Baroque Architecture And Factional Politics In Regency Paris, 1715-1723, Jordan Hallmark

University Honors Theses

It has long been noted by architectural historians that the exuberant stylistic idiom of the Roman Baroque, which spread throughout most of Europe in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, failed to exert much of an influence on the architecture of early modern France. Scholars have traditionally interpreted this failure as a conscious rejection of the Roman Baroque style on the part of the French monarchy, which, with the rise of royal absolutism during the personal reign of Louis XIV (1661-1715) , adopted the classical style of architecture and design as a formal language with which to assert the absolute …

Forms And Functions : Life-Anatomy Or Physiology?, Theresa Payne Jan 2014

Forms And Functions : Life-Anatomy Or Physiology?, Theresa Payne

University Honors Theses

Humans use metaphors to communicate internal concepts and connections of experience, and attempt to systematize metaphors used for a more coherent world view. The most structured system of metaphor is science. Theories are not actual representations of the phenomena present to experience, their purpose is to communicate abstracted experience and expected regularity. A science in desperate need of a conceptual, thus metaphoric, realignment is biology. The metaphors used to describe organisms have gone through varying incarnations focusing on either the vitalistic or mechanistic aspects of their appearance; function versus form, physiology or anatomy. The use of culturally relevant terminology can …

Neuropeptide Y: A Potential Marker For A Life-History Transition In The Red-Sided Garter Snake (Thamnophis Sirtalis), Daelyn Richards Jan 2014

Neuropeptide Y: A Potential Marker For A Life-History Transition In The Red-Sided Garter Snake (Thamnophis Sirtalis), Daelyn Richards

University Honors Theses

It is essential for organisms to exhibit appropriate behaviors as they transition from one life-history stage to another. While such life-history transitions are critical to both individual survival and reproductive fitness, we know very little about the underlying mechanisms. This project explores a potential mechanism regulating the transition of red-sided garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis) from reproductive to foraging behavior. After emerging from winter dormancy, male snakes engage in mate searching and mating behavior followed by a transition to foraging. Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is a neurohormone that controls appetite and feeding behavior in all organisms studied. We previously demonstrated …

A Test Of The Optimal Defense Theory: Cyanogenesis In Phaseolus Lunatus L., Lauren M. Stady Jan 2014

A Test Of The Optimal Defense Theory: Cyanogenesis In Phaseolus Lunatus L., Lauren M. Stady

University Honors Theses

The optimal defense theory describes an ideal distribution of chemical defense patterns in plants. Chemical defenses are finite, and should be allocated based upon the vulnerability and value of a given tissue. In this study, we quantified hydrogen cyanide production (defense parameter) and protein content (nutritive parameter) in photosynthetic and reproductive organs of experimental plant Phaseolus lunatus L.. Feeding trials using a generalist herbivore were also conducted to determine insect preference, and compare against defense and nutritional values obtained. Our findings show that young leaves have highest concentrations of hydrogen cyanide, and are thus best defended, and reproductive organs and …

Technology-Based Training For Older Employees: A Literature Review, Daria Maletis Jan 2014

Technology-Based Training For Older Employees: A Literature Review, Daria Maletis

University Honors Theses

Technology-based training is being increasingly adopted by organizations of all sizes. It allows employers to cut costs and to train more employees at the same time. However, arguably the greatest benefit of computer-based training is that it is very flexible and can be customized to the needs of the organization as well as to the individual needs of the trainees. This paper explores what adjustments can be made to computerized training programs for older employees to make their learning most effective. The results of the literature review show that older adults benefit from simple and consistent interface design, large font …

The Occurrences, References And Projected Attitudes About Lgbt Lifestyles In Children's Media: A Content Analysis Of Animated Films, Michael Caldwell

University Honors Theses

This study included a selection of 5 top-grossing animated children's films looking for hints, references and projected attitudes about LGBT lifestyles. I hypothesized that there would be no out-right gay characters whatsoever, but only hints or strong hints to, and that they would be exemplified through gender transgressions, intense same-sex interactions, and contain a focus on male masculinity. Furthermore, I hypothesized that all categories would be used primarily for humor. Results held true with these predictions where all categories were used for humor 83% of the time, with a focus on male characters. The results also support the noted increase …

The Cultural Trombone: A Contemporary View On National Performance Practices, Sam Arnold Jan 2014

The Cultural Trombone: A Contemporary View On National Performance Practices, Sam Arnold

University Honors Theses

The world of trombone performance practices based specifically on the nationality of the composition is one that has not been thoroughly explored, especially in regards to methodological studies. The basis of this thesis is to provide a progressive method book detailing appropriate performance practices through the inclusion of various solos and arrangements alongside annotations and performance notes. This aids trombonists in becoming aware of what it means to appropriately play music based on its national background, and elevates trombonists to a new level of playing and musicianship. Upon exploration into this method book, trombonists are guided through the cultural centers …

Network Analysis Of Circular Permutations In Multidomain Proteins Reveals Functional Linkages For Uncharacterized Proteins., Donald Adjeroh, Yue Jiang, Bing-Hua Jiang, Jie Lin

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Various studies have implicated different multidomain proteins in cancer. However, there has been little or no detailed study on the role of circular multidomain proteins in the general problem of cancer or on specific cancer types. This work represents an initial attempt at investigating the potential for predicting linkages between known cancer-associated proteins with uncharacterized or hypothetical multidomain proteins, based primarily on circular permutation (CP) relationships. First, we propose an efficient algorithm for rapid identification of both exact and approximate CPs in multidomain proteins. Using the circular relations identified, we construct networks between multidomain proteins, based on which we perform …

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

Light is a potent stimulus for regulating circadian, hormonal, and behavioral systems. In addition, light therapy is effective for certain affective disorders, sleep problems, and circadian rhythm disruption. These biological and behavioral effects of light are influenced by a distinct photoreceptor in the eye, melanopsin-containing intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs), in addition to conventional rods and cones. We summarize the neurophysiology of this newly described sensory pathway and consider implications for the measurement, production, and application of light. A new light-measurement strategy taking account of the complex photoreceptive inputs to these non-visual responses is proposed for use by researchers, …

Carbon Footprint In Knowledge Sector: An Assessment From Cradle To Grave., Sheikh Shueb, Mohd Arshid Mir

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Carbon footprint has become a widely used term and concept in the public debate on responsibility and abatement action against the threat of global climate change. It had a tremendous increase in public appearance over the last few years and is now a buzzword widely used across the media, government and in the business world. "The carbon footprint is a measure of the exclusive total amount of carbon dioxide emissions that is directly and indirectly caused by an activity or is accumulated over the life stages of a product". Until now only little research has been made trying to explore …

Familial Strife On The Seashore: Aggression Increases With Relatedness In The Sea Anemone Actinia Equina., Nicola L. Foster, Mark Briffa Jan 2014

Familial Strife On The Seashore: Aggression Increases With Relatedness In The Sea Anemone Actinia Equina., Nicola L. Foster, Mark Briffa

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Pairwise contests occur when two individuals compete directly over ownership of an indivisible resource. Contests vary in the degree of escalation, some encounters being settled through non-injurious behaviour while others are only resolved after dangerous fighting. Here, we investigate the role of relatedness, assessed using AFLP analysis, on the occurrence of stinging during staged contests in the beadlet sea anemone Actinia equina. Contrary to our expectations, we found that the chance of stinging, and hence the chance of inflicting damage, increased with the degree of relatedness between the two opponents. This result may be explained by the negative relationship between …

The 'Happiest Corner' Of London: Bethnal Green, 1881-1951, Audrey Gray Jan 2014

The 'Happiest Corner' Of London: Bethnal Green, 1881-1951, Audrey Gray

LSU Master's Theses

The social question of the Victorian age centered on poverty: the who; the what; and most importantly, the why of poverty. By the end of the nineteenth century, the why had been obscured by a search for the causes of overcrowding, epidemics, starvation, sanitation, and unemployment, all seen as symptoms of poverty but often confused as causes of poverty. Bethnal Green was emblematic of all of these conditions, and many social experiments were conducted to alleviate these symptoms. With the evacuation of London during World War II, as well as the mass destruction of buildings in Bethnal Green, overcrowding was …

Bridging Research And Education: A Look Into The Evolutionary History Of Batfishes And How Museum Exhibits Can Be Used To Engage The Public, Valerie Anestazia Derouen Jan 2014

Bridging Research And Education: A Look Into The Evolutionary History Of Batfishes And How Museum Exhibits Can Be Used To Engage The Public, Valerie Anestazia Derouen

LSU Master's Theses

The objective of this thesis was not only to contribute to our understanding of batfishes but to also show interesting and educational ways research can be presented to the general public. The first part of this project examines the evolutionary history of batfishes. Batfishes (Ogcocephalidae) are an understudied, group of marine anglerfishes that are dorsoventrally flattened and have an illicium and esca used to attract prey. Relationships among these taxa, as well as the position of Ogcocephalidae within Lophiiformes, remain poorly understood, with previous studies showing conflicting, and poorly resolved results. The timing of divergence and depth of origination in …

Effects Of Induced Plant Resistance And Potassium Fertilization Rates On Soybean Looper (Chrysodeixis Includens) Development In Soybean, Xuan Chen

LSU Master's Theses

Soybean looper, Chrysodeixis includens (Walker), is one of the most destructive pests of soybean in the southern U.S. It is highly resistant to most insecticides. Induced host plant resistance and cultural control are sought as alternative control tactics. In this study, effects of induced resistance by exogenous application of elicitors were estimated on soybean looper development in soybean. Three different known elicitors of SAR (systemic acquired resistance), Actigard 50WG (acibenzolar-S-methyl), Regalia (extract of Reynoutria sachalinensis) and methyl jasmonate (MeJA), were applied to soybean plants at R2 and R5 stages to determine if these chemicals could induce plant resistance and lower …

Electrical Resistivity Employed At The Livonia Mound Site (16pc1), Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana, Jennifer Patricia Gardner Jan 2014

Electrical Resistivity Employed At The Livonia Mound Site (16pc1), Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana, Jennifer Patricia Gardner

LSU Master's Theses

Electrical resistivity was used at the Livonia Mound site (16PC1) to identify construction breaks, possible human burials, and other cultural activity below the surface. Resistivity transects traveled across the mound and the level surface directly south of the mound; this latter section was called Area A. Four transects stretched across the north, south, west, and east slopes of the mound; as a result, four vertical profiles were created from the apparent resistivity (ƒâa) values. The standard deviation of each transect was computed using the ƒâa values from the four pseudo-sections to establish the base-line for analysis. ƒâa values for Area …

Orphic Ecology: Melancholy And The Poetics Of Robert Duncan, Robert Nolan Knapp Jan 2014

Orphic Ecology: Melancholy And The Poetics Of Robert Duncan, Robert Nolan Knapp

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This paper explores the poetry of Robert Duncan and the political potential of melancholy. Relying on Judith Butler’s examination of the difference between “mourning” and “melancholy” in Precarious Lives, I argue that Robert Duncan enacts a condition of melancholia that he might respond to what Catriona Mortimer-Sandilands identifies in Queer Ecologies as “the psychically ungrievable”: homosexual desire and the environment. I contend in this thesis that one might enact an active experience of melancholy as both a preservative and rejuvenative force. In the first chapter of the thesis I explore Robert Duncan’s revisitation of a passage from Ovid’s Metamorphoses in …

Green And Grey: Water Justice, Privatization, And Resistance, William Mcclanahan Jan 2014

Green And Grey: Water Justice, Privatization, And Resistance, William Mcclanahan

Online Theses and Dissertations

Since its initial proposal in the 1990s, `green criminology' has focused on environmental crimes and harms affecting non-human and human life, ecosystems, and the planet as a whole. Describing global trends toward privatization of water supply systems and the criminalization of several water conservation activities and tactics, this paper employs theoretical perspectives offered by green, cultural, and critical criminologies, focusing on overt resistance to water privatization and oppressive regulations governing rainwater storage and residential water recycling. Taking a critical theoretical perspective, this paper examines water access and autonomy, individuals and groups openly resisting the criminalization of household water reuse and …

Since the inception of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and their revelation that management commitment is critical to OSH program success, senior leadership has struggled exercising this concept. Many safety professionals, such as those cited in the Literature Review of this study have also examined this issue. However, while many articles and peer-reviewed journals indicate there is …

Social Class And Capital Punishment: A Theoretical And Empirical Analysis, Jennifer L. Tilley Jan 2014

Social Class And Capital Punishment: A Theoretical And Empirical Analysis, Jennifer L. Tilley

Online Theses and Dissertations

While it is generally assumed that virtually all persons executed in the United States are poor, the social class - execution link has not been well documented or theorized in the literature. Far more research has analyzed the relationship of race and gender to execution. Using data on executions carried out in Texas between 2000 and 2012, individuals sentenced to death from the Supreme Court's Gregg decision through 1997 in Tennessee, narrative case studies, and a content analysis of state-defined mitigating circumstances, this study provides both detailed documentation of the social class characteristics of those executed, as well as a …

Interactions Between Eastern Newts And Wood Frogs In An Anthropogenically Altered Wetland System In Eastern Kentucky, Chelsea S. Kross Jan 2014

Interactions Between Eastern Newts And Wood Frogs In An Anthropogenically Altered Wetland System In Eastern Kentucky, Chelsea S. Kross

Online Theses and Dissertations

A key characteristic of the ridge-top ecosystem in eastern Kentucky is the presence of ephemeral wetlands. Ephemeral wetlands of the ridge-top ecosystem support an amphibian community assemblage characterized by species with short larval periods (e.g., Wood Frogs [Lithobates sylvaticus] and Marbled Salamanders [Ambystoma opacum]). Over the last 25 years, hundreds of wetlands have been constructed within the ridge-top ecosystem as permanent water sources for wildlife (i.e., game species). Consequently, the modified ridge-top ecosystem contains hundreds of constructed wetlands interspersed among natural, ephemeral wetlands. The altered ecosystem has been colonized by several amphibian species with larval periods …

Bankster's Paradise: The Importance Of Discourse In Creating A Haven For Criminogenic Banks In The United States, Maria Jacqueline Bordt Jan 2014

Bankster's Paradise: The Importance Of Discourse In Creating A Haven For Criminogenic Banks In The United States, Maria Jacqueline Bordt

Online Theses and Dissertations

This work examines the ways in which language can contribute to a cultural climate in which white-collar crime is no longer considered "deviant," but rather is considered part of a normally functioning political economy. The 2012 money laundering case involving HSBC is examined in conjunction with the rhetoric of popular financial counselor Dave Ramsey. This research seeks to define how language involving the accumulation of capital is equated with virtuousness, thus constructing a myth about the criminality inherent to "legitimate" capital enterprises.
