Reimagining The Synthesis Of Latino Youth In The Science Lab : Using Latino Cultural Identity To Teach Cellular Permeability, Nathalie Iturburua Jan 2014

Reimagining The Synthesis Of Latino Youth In The Science Lab : Using Latino Cultural Identity To Teach Cellular Permeability, Nathalie Iturburua

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Academic excellence is often thought of as achieved through “motivation”. I use this term lightly because of its many definitions and lack of true value to its meaning in correlation with my project. Institutions often analyze student academics through the scope of the student. That is, completing homework assignments, preparing for tests and quizzes, spending adequate time outside of the classroom practicing academic integrity, staying out of the principal’s office, and so forth. Seldom institutions have shifted their focus to critique their own faculty and curriculum to analyze student academic interest. It is through the work of the faculty member …

The world is in the midst of a biodiversity crisis, threatening essential goods and services on which humanity depends. While there is an urgent need globally for biodiversity research, growing obstacles are severely limiting biodiversity research throughout the developing world, particularly in Southeast Asia. Facilities, funding, and expertise are often limited throughout this region, reducing the capacity for local biodiversity research. Although western scientists generally have more expertise and capacity, international research has sometimes been exploitative “parachute science,” creating a culture of suspicion and mistrust. These issues, combined with misplaced fears of biopiracy, have resulted in severe roadblocks to biodiversity …

Return Of The Ghosts Of Dispersal Past: Historical Spread And Contemporary Gene Flow In The Blue Sea Star Linckia Laevigata, Eric D. Crandall

School of Natural Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Marine animals inhabiting the Indian and Pacific oceans have some of the most extensive species ranges in the world, sometimes spanning over half the globe. These Indo-Pacific species present a challenge for study with both geographic scope and sampling density as limiting factors. Here, we augment and aggregate phylogeographic sampling of the iconic blue sea star, Linckia laevigata Linnaeus, 1758, and present one of the most geographically comprehensive genetic studies of any Indo-Pacific species to date, sequencing 392 base pairs of mitochondrial COI from 791 individuals from 38 locations spanning over 14,000 km. We first use a permutation based multiple-regression …

Effects Of Cultural Awareness Training In Conjunction With An Established Bullying Prevention Program, Megan Kallie Polanin Jan 2014

Effects Of Cultural Awareness Training In Conjunction With An Established Bullying Prevention Program, Megan Kallie Polanin

Dissertations

While many school bullying prevention programs have been designed to thwart school bullying perpetration, victimization, and physical aggression, empirical support is limited. To date, few researchers have addressed bullying within the context of children's cultural systems, and cultural awareness training has not yet been utilized as a mechanism to decrease bullying behaviors in the context of school bullying prevention programs.

This study examined the utility of incorporating multicultural training aimed at reducing prejudice within the context of school bullying prevention programming efforts within a diverse educational setting. This researcher hypothesized that the addition of meaningful culture curriculum would further reduce …

Austerity Versus Stimulus: Theoretical Perspectives And Policy Implications, James Midgley Jan 2014

Austerity Versus Stimulus: Theoretical Perspectives And Policy Implications, James Midgley

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Attempts to respond to the negative social and economic effects of the Great Recession have been cast in terms of the austerity versus stimulus debate. Although oversimplified, this debate reflects wider theoretical analyses of market economies and normative prescriptions for enhancing their functioning. Referencing the historical evolution of economic thought, these theories and their policy implications for responding to recessions are summarized and their relevance for social welfare is examined in the light of recent events.

Regulation And Targeting Of Fyn In Human Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Sarah Fenton Jan 2014

Regulation And Targeting Of Fyn In Human Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Sarah Fenton

Dissertations

Fyn, a member of the Src family kinases, is an oncogene in murine epidermis and is associated with cell-cell adhesion turnover and migration. Introduction of active H-Ras(G12V) into the HaCaT human keratinocyte cell line resulted in upregulation of FYN mRNA (200-fold) and protein, but did not increase the expression of other SFKs. We identified two nucleotides 74 bases upstream of the human FYN gene transcription start site as necessary for FYN upregulation in HaCaT-Ras cells. Further studies identified Lef-1 as the transcription factor most likely binding to this site and mediating FYN upregulation.

Transduction of active Ras or Fyn was …

The Empathetic Human: The Story Of How Story Increases Cognitive And Social Ability, Olivia C. Flores 14 Jan 2014

The Empathetic Human: The Story Of How Story Increases Cognitive And Social Ability, Olivia C. Flores 14

Honor Scholar Theses

This thesis all started from my reflections on being an English Literature major. I mention this not because it is rare or unique, but rather because realizing my interest in literature and considering the cognitive effect it has on humans initiated my current academic endeavor: writing a very, very long paper. Even though the skills English majors exercise seem like the mundane activities of introverted bookworms, these experiences with language are spectacular phenomenons that prove to be, in fact, universal. Many argue that literature has an adaptive function that not only demonstrates why we gravitate toward story and how we …

Carbon Footprint In Knowledge Sector: An Assessment From Cradle To Grave., Sheikh Shueb, Mohd Arshid Mir Jan 2014

Carbon Footprint In Knowledge Sector: An Assessment From Cradle To Grave., Sheikh Shueb, Mohd Arshid Mir

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Carbon footprint has become a widely used term and concept in the public debate on responsibility and abatement action against the threat of global climate change. It had a tremendous increase in public appearance over the last few years and is now a buzzword widely used across the media, government and in the business world. "The carbon footprint is a measure of the exclusive total amount of carbon dioxide emissions that is directly and indirectly caused by an activity or is accumulated over the life stages of a product". Until now only little research has been made trying to explore …

Modern Islamic Motif Design: Developing New Arabesque Motifs By Mixing Styles, Shuruq Nahhas Jan 2014

Modern Islamic Motif Design: Developing New Arabesque Motifs By Mixing Styles, Shuruq Nahhas

Theses

"Modern Islamic Motif Design: Developing New Arabesque Motifs by Mixing Styles" focuses on developing modern arabesque motifs that are based on the method of mixing styles. This method is based on mixing the most representational characteristics of two styles from different period of time: modern and historical Islamic styles. The achievement will look modern and Islamic at the same time without losing the elements of the old style. The purpose of this research is to revive historical Islamic motifs and adding a contemporary look to them by keeping the Islamic look, which could be used perfectly in many fields of …

Passive Sampling Methods For Contaminated Sediments: Scientific Rationale Supporting Use Of Freely Dissolved Concentrations, Philipp Mayer, Thomas F. Parkerton, Rachel G. Adams, John G. Cargill, Jay Gan, Todd Gouin, Philip M. Gschwend, Steven B. Hawthorne, Paul Helm, Gesine Witt, Jing You, Beate I. Escher

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Works

Passive sampling methods (PSMs) allow the quantification of the freely dissolved concentration (Cfree ) of an organic contaminant even in complex matrices such as sediments. Cfree is directly related to a contaminant's chemical activity, which drives spontaneous processes including diffusive uptake into benthic organisms and exchange with the overlying water column. Consequently, Cfree provides a more relevant dose metric than total sediment concentration. Recent developments in PSMs have significantly improved our ability to reliably measure even very low levels of Cfree . Application of PSMs in sediments is preferably conducted in the equilibrium regime, where freely dissolved concentrations in the …

Female Hurricanes Are Deadlier Than Male Hurricanes, Madhu Viswanathan Jan 2014

Female Hurricanes Are Deadlier Than Male Hurricanes, Madhu Viswanathan

Marketing & Business Law Faculty Works

Do people judge hurricane risks in the context of gender-based expectations? We use more than six decades of death rates from US hurricanes to show that feminine-named hurricanes cause significantly more deaths than do masculine-named hurricanes. Laboratory experiments indicate that this is because hurricane names lead to gender-based expectations about severity and this, in turn, guides respondents’ preparedness to take protective action. This finding indicates an unfortunate and unintended consequence of the gendered naming of hurricanes, with important implications for policymakers, media practitioners, and the general public concerning hurricane communication and preparedness.

Cranial Morphometrics Of The Dire Wolf, Canis Dirus, At Rancho La Brea: Temporal Variability And Its Links To Nutrient Stress And Climate, F. Robin O'Keefe, Wendy J. Binder, Stephen R. Frost, Rudyard W. Sadlier, Blaire Van Valkenburgh Jan 2014

Cranial Morphometrics Of The Dire Wolf, Canis Dirus, At Rancho La Brea: Temporal Variability And Its Links To Nutrient Stress And Climate, F. Robin O'Keefe, Wendy J. Binder, Stephen R. Frost, Rudyard W. Sadlier, Blaire Van Valkenburgh

Biology Faculty Works

The tar pits of Rancho La Brea are a unique window onto the biology and ecology of the terminal Pleistocene in southern California. In this study we capitalize on recent advances in understanding of La Brea tar pit chronology to perform the first morphometric study of crania of the dire wolf, Canis dirus, over time. We first present new data on tooth fracture and wear from pits dated older than heretofore analyzed, and demonstrate that fracture and wear events, and the increased competition and heightened carcass utilization they are thought to represent, were of varying intensity across the sampled …

Pvr Expression Regulators In Equilibrium Signal Control And Maintenance Of Drosophila Blood Progenitors, Bama C.Haran Mondal, Jiwon Shim, Cory J. Evans, Utpal Banerjee Jan 2014

Pvr Expression Regulators In Equilibrium Signal Control And Maintenance Of Drosophila Blood Progenitors, Bama C.Haran Mondal, Jiwon Shim, Cory J. Evans, Utpal Banerjee

Biology Faculty Works

Blood progenitors within the lymph gland, a larval organ that supports hematopoiesis in Drosophila melanogaster, are maintained by integrating signals emanating from niche-like cells and those from differentiating blood cells. We term the signal from differentiating cells the ‘equilibrium signal’ in order to distinguish it from the ‘niche signal’. Earlier we showed that equilibrium signaling utilizes Pvr (the Drosophila PDGF/VEGF receptor), STAT92E, and adenosine deaminase-related growth factor A (ADGF-A) (Mondal et al., 2011). Little is known about how this signal initiates during hematopoietic development. To identify new genes involved in lymph gland blood progenitor maintenance, particularly those involved in equilibrium …

Design Requirements For Generating Deceptive Content To Protect Document Repositories, Ben Whitham Jan 2014

Design Requirements For Generating Deceptive Content To Protect Document Repositories, Ben Whitham

Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference

For nearly 30 years, fake digital documents have been used to identify external intruders and malicious insider threats. Unfortunately, while fake files hold potential to assist in data theft detection, there is little evidence of their application outside of niche organisations and academic institutions. The barrier to wider adoption appears to be the difficulty in constructing deceptive content. The current generation of solutions principally: (1) use unrealistic random data; (2) output heavily formatted or specialised content, that is difficult to apply to other environments; (3) require users to manually build the content, which is not scalable, or (4) employ an …

A Pedagogical Heartbeat: The Integration Of Critical And Contemplative Pedagogies For Transformative Education, Juan Mah Y Busch Jan 2014

A Pedagogical Heartbeat: The Integration Of Critical And Contemplative Pedagogies For Transformative Education, Juan Mah Y Busch

English Faculty Works

With so many figurative references to the heart, the heart has become an overextended metaphor and threatens to become less meaningful. Widely circulated books on Critical Pedagogies and Contemplative Pedagogies refer to the heart. Though they may share a sense of learning as transformation, each has a very different method, which I identify as dialectical or dialogical.  And, each one defines its liberatory transformation in a very different way, one with “third space” and the other in relational and holistic space, which is considered transcendent. This essay describes two forms of heartfelt awareness, first-order heart-based knowledge and the heart’s second-order …

Fear Of An Undeterrable Other, Fredrick E. Vars Jan 2014

Fear Of An Undeterrable Other, Fredrick E. Vars

Articles

America is presently fighting a war on terror and a war on sex offenders. In each, the government openly detains hundreds of individuals not for what they have done, but for what they might do. Some warn that this greatest restriction on liberty may expand to other types of people. This Article examines the risk of such expansion by putting our current wars in historical perspective. The two main conclusions are: (1) some categories of people detained in prior periods are not being detained today; and (2) the risk of expansion is real but lower than previously suggested.

Optimization Of An Integrative Suspension Cell Culture/Quantitative Pcr Technique For The Detection Of Enteroviruses In Surface Water, Stephanie Nicole Tornberg Jan 2014

Optimization Of An Integrative Suspension Cell Culture/Quantitative Pcr Technique For The Detection Of Enteroviruses In Surface Water, Stephanie Nicole Tornberg

Master's Theses and Capstones

Enteroviruses are pathogens which exist in water sources, and are passed via the fecal-oral pathway. These viruses are of public health concern due to the high occurrence globally of human infections and potential for serious illness or death. Current methods employed by the EPA for the detection of enteroviruses involve using both cell culture and quantitative PCR (qPCR). Laboratories working with samples independent of the EPA often use a detection method that integrates cell culture and qPCR (ICC/qPCR). Substituting suspension cultures for traditional monolayers has been proposed as a less expensive alternative method with higher sensitivity than traditional monolayers while …

Carelessness And Affect In An Intelligent Tutoring System For Mathematics, Maria Ofelia Z. San Pedro, Ryan S.J.D Baker, Ma. Mercedes T. Rodrigo Jan 2014

Carelessness And Affect In An Intelligent Tutoring System For Mathematics, Maria Ofelia Z. San Pedro, Ryan S.J.D Baker, Ma. Mercedes T. Rodrigo

Department of Information Systems & Computer Science Faculty Publications

We investigate the relationship between students’ affect and their frequency of careless errors while using an Intelligent Tutoring System for middle school mathematics. A student is said to have committed a careless error when the student’s answer is wrong despite knowing the skill required to provide the correct answer. We operationalize the probability that an error is careless through the use of an automated detector, developed using educational data mining, which infers the probability that an error involves carelessness rather than not knowing the relevant skill. This detector is then applied to log data produced by high-school students in the …

A Mobile Authoring Tool For Ar Content Generation Using Images As Annotations, Ma. Mercedes T. Rodrigo Jan 2014

A Mobile Authoring Tool For Ar Content Generation Using Images As Annotations, Ma. Mercedes T. Rodrigo

Department of Information Systems & Computer Science Faculty Publications

Augmented Reality (AR) is a technology that allows the superimposition of virtual objects onto the real world environment. Various fields, such as education, medicine, and architecture, have started adapting AR technology. However, developing AR applications, along with their contents, requires a specific skillset, which limits the number of AR-based applications that can be developed. Various authoring tools are available for desktop systems to ease the development of AR applications and content, yet only few attempts have been made to develop these kinds of tools for mobile systems. This paper describes a mobile application that allows users to author content for …

Folkloric Musicians Among The Bugakhwe, Robert Veith Jan 2014

Folkloric Musicians Among The Bugakhwe, Robert Veith

Masters Theses

Increased access to global media by traditional culture in remote parts of Africa has, in many cases, seen indigenous music marginalized in favor of imported forms. In some places, a folkloric tradition thrives, though this music may face extinction if those who practice it do not document their art in a way which can be passed down to future generations. For this project, I recorded seven musician/composers of the Bugakhwe, a Khoisan people group living in the Okavango Delta region of Botswana. Two were given enough studio time to create a complete CD-length set, so as to show off the …

Dynamics Of Shrub Fires Investigated Via Physics Based Modeling, Ambarish Dahale Jan 2014

Dynamics Of Shrub Fires Investigated Via Physics Based Modeling, Ambarish Dahale

Dissertations

A physics based model, capable of predicting fire spread through a multiphase porous media, is formulated and described in detail. The resulting governing equations of fluid dynamics, combustion, heat transfer and thermal degradation of solid fuel, are solved using discrete numerical methods. The burning of an isolated chamise (Adenostoma fasciculatum) shrub approximately 1 m in height, similar to previously reported experimental study, was investigated using this physics based model. Global quantities including burning time, total mass consumed, time history of mass loss rate and time to reach maximum mass loss rate are found to be in good agreement with experimental …
