A number of herbal medicines have been shown to have a favourable effect in treating cancer or cancer-related diseases. Phaleria macrocarpa (Scheff.) Boerl is one of the traditional herbal medicines that appear to be useful for treating patients who are hypertensive, diabetic and cancerous. Lactation impairment is commonly blamed on stress despite mothers’ determination and knowledge on breastfeeding. This research is carried out to determine the association between perceived stress and serum cortisol and prolactin levels in working and non-working mothers during the first, second, third and fourth postpartum months. It is hypothesised that working mothers would be under more stress and thus have higher cortisol level but lower prolactin levels as compared to non-working mothers. Fifty-nine postpartum mothers at two health clinics within the Kuala Lumpur urban area were recruited. The characterization of leachate from ten different landfills (sanitary and non-sanitary) in Selangor have been studied. The general chemical parameters of leachate showed large differences among the landfills. The concentration of total nitrogen, total suspended solids and ammoniacal nitrogen varied from 8.0 to 1700 mg/L, 10 to 3000 mg/L and 0.94 to 3200 mg/L, respectively. Meanwhile, the concentration of total organic carbon, biological oxygen demand (BOD5) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were in the range of 0-45070 mg/L, 56-11360 mg/L and 165-16000 mg/L, respectively. The bark of the cinnamon tree (Cinnamomum cassia) is a popular culinary spice. It is also used in traditional medicine to maintain health and prevent disease. The antioxidant and anticancer activity of C. cassia was investigated using various assays. C. cassia bark was sequentially extracted with seven solvents of varying polarity. The acetone extract of C. cassia, at 30 μg/ml, protected the mouse fibroblast cell line, 3T3-L1, from DNA damage by 45 %, as estimated by the comet assay. Blood pressure (BP) is partly determined by vasoconstriction or vasodilation. The most important vasoconstrictor is angiotensin II (Ang II) whilst nitric oxide (NO), prostacyclin (PGI2) and bradykinin (BK) are main vasodilators. The vasopeptidase, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), is able to hydrolyse BK and convert angiotensin I (Ang I) to Ang II. Bradykinin is also inactivated by another vasopeptidase, neutral endopeptidase (NEP). Increases in ACE and NEP activities would elevate Ang II but decrease BK levels that could cause increases in BP which in the long-term could result in hypertension. A complete set of the prosthesis for transfemoral amputee includes a socket which is custom fit to the residual limb, a prosthetic knee unit, a shank connecting the knee unit to a prosthetic ankle, and a prosthetic foot. Ecological aspects of diogenid hermit crabs were studied in Matang mangrove estuary and adjacent coastal waters to determine their abundance and distribution in relation to abiotic and biotic factors, population dynamics, shell use patterns, reproduction and trophodynamics. Samplings of hermit crabs and environmental parameters were carried out at mid-estuary, river mouth, coastal mudflat and offshore shoal waters, using a small otter trawl from August 2009 to March 2011. The method for the determination of lead in wax crayon by Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry was adopted from Health Canada Safety Program (HCSP), Product Safety Laboratory, ‘Determination of Total Lead in Wax Crayon by Closed Vessel Micowave Digestion’ and verified. The parameter of method verification such as accuracy, precision, limit of detection, limit of quantitation and linearity were studied. This study cloned and expressed CG16936 and the resulting recombinant CG16936 has been reactive towards 1,2-dichloro-4-nitrobenze (DCNB) (0.4324 μmol/min/mg) but of no activities towards, 1-chloro-2,4-nitrobenzene, trans-2-hexenal, p-nitrobenzyl chloride (NBC), ethacryanic acid (EA), trans-4-phenyl-butene-2-one (PBO), hexa-2,4-dienal, trans,trans-hepta-2,4-dienal, 1,2-epoxy-3-p-nitrophenoxy propane (EPNP), bromosulfophthalein (BSP) and trans-oct-2-enal. This mechanism of cell-to-cell communication is known as quorum sensing (QS). In this study, actinobacteria was isolated from intertidal sediment samples and Padina antillarum (Dictyotales, Phaeophyceae) from Tanjung Tuan (Cape Rachado), Port Dickson, Malaysia. Isolates were subjected to polymerase chain reaction (PCR) screening specific for Streptomycetaceae and Micromonosporaceae, prior to characterization by phenotypic characterisation and its genotyping for the purpose of clustering. The present study deals with tissue culture of Punica granatum L. Nodal stem explant was found to be the best explant which gave the highest shoot number (3.8±0.2) on MS medium supplemented with 1.5 g/L BAP, while shoot tip explant (1.9±0.1cm) on MS medium with 2.0 mg/L BAP gave the best shoot height. MS supplemented with 1.5 mg/L BAP was observed to give the highest shoot production (4.1±0.2) with combination of 40 g/L of sucrose in shoot tip explant. This study was carried out to identify, characterize and valuate the plant resource used by the Orang Asli in Kampung Lubuk Ulu Legong, Baling, Kedah. The data for this study was collected through home garden plants survey, wild plant survey and structured interviews with the villagers. During this study a total of 175 plants species were encountered of which 68 species were cultivated, 91 species were wild and 16 species were both cultivated and wild. Among the cultivated plants the family Euphorbiaceae recorded the highest number of species. Among the wild plants, the family Arecaceae recorded the highest number of …
