Development Of A Paper Based Lateral Flow Device For The Detection Of Iαip Via Competitive Elisa, Alexander Giannakos Jan 2014

Development Of A Paper Based Lateral Flow Device For The Detection Of Iαip Via Competitive Elisa, Alexander Giannakos

Open Access Master's Theses

This research has the focus on developing a paper-based device capable of sequentially flowing three separate fluids. Different assembly methods are investigated and compared to develop a more streamlined approach for the prototyping and testing of biological reagents. A faster method of fabrication is developed followed by an investigation of the potentials to detect the presence of Inter α Inhibitor Protein (a biomarker associated with sepsis). This is primarily achieved by applying the techniques of an Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) onto a paper based platform. The research presented shows the steady progression toward and optimization of a lateral flow …

Preliminary Evaluation Of The Mathup Curriculum, Stephanie Tang

Open Access Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of the novel math curriculum, mathUP, on math development for pupils receiving this instruction. Two Rhode Island schools participated: a charter school that had implemented mathUP and a suburban control school located in a higher socioeconomic (SES) community. Kindergarten students (n=41) were assessed on the following measures: two for early numeracy skills, one for visuospatial working memory (WM), and one for math achievement. Fifth-grade students (n=73) were administered a standardized measure of math achievement and an experimenter-generated math test. In addition, kindergarten and fifth-grade teachers in each school completed a …

Automatic High-Frequency Oscillation Detection From Tripolar Concentric Ring Electrode Scalp Recording, Mohammadreza Abtahi

Open Access Master's Theses

Epilepsy is the second most prevalent neurological disorder which affects about 1% of all the humans on the earth. It has different causes and symptoms with the seizures as the main symptom. The seizures are characterized as some abnormal electrical activities of the brain. The main therapy for epilepsy is using anti-epileptic drugs which can help around 60% of the patients. The other therapy for the patients who cannot be cured by drugs is surgery. In order to define the brain tissue which is generating the seizures, there is a need to record electrical activity from the brain (electroencephalogram) with …

Ecology And Conservation Of The Bamboo Pit Viper: Natural History, Demography And Effects Of Translocation, Elizabeth Anne Devan-Song Jan 2014

Ecology And Conservation Of The Bamboo Pit Viper: Natural History, Demography And Effects Of Translocation, Elizabeth Anne Devan-Song

Open Access Master's Theses

The bamboo pit viper (Trimeresurus albolabris, Gray 1842) is broadly distributed through South and Southeast Asia. This venomous snake occurs in high abundances in Hong Kong, and frequently comes into contact with humans. Thus it is viewed as a ‘nuisance’ species and is commonly translocated away from areas of human habitation. Despite being relatively abundant and a frequent focus of humansnake conflict in the region, very little is known about the ecology, demography, and the effects of long-distance translocation on this species. I captured 104 T. albolabris from throughout Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, China and collected …

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

We collected and examined 16 Fowler’s toads, Anaxyrus fowleri, and one dwarf American toad, Anaxyrus americanus charlesmithi, in central Arkansas in 2011. Collection was initiated by observation of abnormal toads. Toads were euthanized, measured, photographed, and deposited in the Arkansas State University herpetological collection. Several toads were radiographed. We found various abnormalities in both forelimbs and hindlimbs and on both sides of the body. The causes of the abnormalities remain unknown and will require further studies to determine if the environment is imperiled.

Structure Based Discovery Of A Novel Inhibitor Of Oxa-1 Β-Lactamase, Leslie Wyman Jan 2014

Structure Based Discovery Of A Novel Inhibitor Of Oxa-1 Β-Lactamase, Leslie Wyman

McNair Scholars Journal

β-lactam antibiotics, such as penicillin, are among the most commonly prescribed group of antibiotics. These antibiotics are characterized by a four-membered β-lactam ring in their molecular structure, and they act by binding to transpeptidase enzymes found exclusively in bacteria, also called penicillin binding proteins (PBPs). Once the β-lactam binds to this target, bacterial cell wall biosynthesis is disrupted and the bacteria lyse and die.

Unfortunately, due to the heavy use of these antibiotics, bacteria developed mechanisms that can render β-lactams inactive and lead to resistance. Antibiotic resistance in humans and in animals poses a serious public health threat and is …

Pet Advocate Program For The Homeless In Missoula, Mt, Lisa Jane Bruce Jan 2014

Pet Advocate Program For The Homeless In Missoula, Mt, Lisa Jane Bruce

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Studies have shown the importance of the relationship that homeless individuals, including victims of domestic violence, have with their pets. This relationship can often create a barrier to accessing emergency shelters since not many shelters accept pets. This paper examines the need to create a community-wide program in Missoula, MT which provides a way to house pets while their owners access emergency shelters. The final section of this paper proposes a “Pet Advocate Program” that could be adopted by the Humane Society of Western Montana.

Impacts Of Montana Public Wolf Hunting And Trapping On Tolerance And Acceptance Of Gray Wolves Among Rural Resident Ranchers, Trappers, And Big Game Hunters, Alia Winn Mulder Jan 2014

Impacts Of Montana Public Wolf Hunting And Trapping On Tolerance And Acceptance Of Gray Wolves Among Rural Resident Ranchers, Trappers, And Big Game Hunters, Alia Winn Mulder

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The Public Trust Doctrine placed wildlife in trust, via state control and regulation, for the benefit of the people. Managing agencies that lose sight of the importance of public acceptance of predator policies and management actions may find themselves legislatively or judicially subverted. This study examines how the Montana public wolf hunting and trapping seasons have affected tolerance and acceptance of gray wolves (Canis lupus) among rural resident ranchers, hunters, and trappers. Twenty residents from the Blackfoot, Bitterroot, and Ninemile Valleys were qualitatively interviewed over the summer and fall of 2013. Potential participants were initially identified using purposive sampling, with …

Ecology And Engagement: The Importance Of Direct Experience Of Nature In Culture And Scholarship, Chris Baldwin Humm Jan 2014

Ecology And Engagement: The Importance Of Direct Experience Of Nature In Culture And Scholarship, Chris Baldwin Humm

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Our culture is becoming increasingly detached from nature. We spend more of our time indoors than ever. While the indoors may offer certain benefits, it’s becoming increasingly clear that our alienation from nature has serious downsides. We depend upon nature for our physical, mental, and spiritual well-being and without it. The opposite of detachment is engagement. Engagement involves direct experience of nature, whether in national parks, wilderness, backyard woods, or unkempt vacant lots. If we want to reverse the problems associated with detachment, we need to encourage engaged alternatives. Only through a culture of engagement, one that recognizes and values …

The Role Of Nadph Oxidase In The Modulation Of Pp2a, Nicole M. Byrnes Jan 2014

The Role Of Nadph Oxidase In The Modulation Of Pp2a, Nicole M. Byrnes

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Transient, but severe global ischemia results in AMPA receptor (AMPAR) mediated delayed neuronal death (DND). AMPARs, a major glutamatergic receptor in the CNS, are heteromeric complexes composed of GluA1 - GluA4 subunits. Most AMPARs in the hippocampus are calcium-impermeable due to the presence of the edited form of the GluA2 subunit. Ischemia results in a down-regulation of GluA2 mRNA and protein expression, resulting in the expression of GluA2- lacking, calcium/zinc-permeable AMPARs. It has been indicated that these GluA2-lacking AMPARs play a key role in promoting DND following ischemic injury. Recent studies report that an oxidative stress signaling pathway is responsible …

The Bear In The Footprint: Using Ethnography To Interpret Archaeological Evidence Of Bear Hunting And Bear Veneration In The Northern Rockies, Michael D. Ciani Jan 2014

The Bear In The Footprint: Using Ethnography To Interpret Archaeological Evidence Of Bear Hunting And Bear Veneration In The Northern Rockies, Michael D. Ciani

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Archaeological evidence of prehistoric bear hunting and bear veneration in the northern Rocky Mountains and northwestern Plains is presented. Ethnographic documents and the writings of trappers, traders, and explorers are assessed in order to establish an interpretative framework to help decipher archaeological contexts in the region that include bear remains and rock art depicting bears. Examining prehistoric archaeological contexts in Montana and Wyoming within this framework suggests evidence of bear hunting and veneration similar to the regional ethnographic record. Data trends imply there may be a relationship between such sites and variables like site location, seasonality, function, and age. Contexts …

"Man, Who Parts The Windblown Grasses", And Other Stories, Ryan Kennerly Jan 2014

"Man, Who Parts The Windblown Grasses", And Other Stories, Ryan Kennerly

Theses and Dissertations

"Man, who Parts the Windblown Grasses," and Other Stories is a collection of short fiction based on common themes of violence, loss and grief, and humanity's struggle to reconcile the primal demands of the id with the desires and restrictions of the superego. Written from many different perspectives, representing all manner of walks of life, the collection seeks to question the ways in which violence is presented, defended, and understood, and what that means for humanity as a species.

Habitat Quality Influences Migratory Strategy Of Female White-Tailed Deer, Charles R. Henderson Jr. Jan 2014

Habitat Quality Influences Migratory Strategy Of Female White-Tailed Deer, Charles R. Henderson Jr.

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Partial migration is a life history strategy that is common for ungulate species living in seasonal environments. One factor that influences the decision to migrate by ungulates is access to high quality habitat. We evaluated the influence of access to winter habitat of high quality on the probability of an individual migrating, the differences in seasonal habitat use between and within migratory and resident classes of deer, and the effects of this decision on the survival of female white-tailed deer. We hypothesized that deer with home ranges of relatively low quality in winter would have a relatively high probability of …

Assessing The Determinants Facilitating Local Vulnerabilities And Adaptive Capacities To Climate Change Impacts In High Mountain Areas: A Case Study Of Northern Ladakh, India, Kimiko Nygaard Barrett Jan 2014

Assessing The Determinants Facilitating Local Vulnerabilities And Adaptive Capacities To Climate Change Impacts In High Mountain Areas: A Case Study Of Northern Ladakh, India, Kimiko Nygaard Barrett

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Climate change is increasingly redefining the dialectic exchange between human systems and ecological processes. While the rhetoric of climate change is articulated within broad arenas of governance and policy, the realities of climate change are experienced at the local scale. Effective adaptation measures must therefore be commensurate with local resources, needs and objectives while remaining aligned with larger decision-making efforts. The impacts of climate change are heterogeneous and vary with geographic context. Biophysical parameters interface with socioeconomic and political forces to greatly influence the outcome of climate-related risks at the local level. In the high mountains of the western Himalayas …

The Effects Of Snmp-2 Gene Expression On Mating Discrimination In Male Drosophila Melanogaster, Kristen Taylor Ashourian Jan 2014

The Effects Of Snmp-2 Gene Expression On Mating Discrimination In Male Drosophila Melanogaster, Kristen Taylor Ashourian

Theses and Dissertations

In order to distinguish between relevant and extraneous stimuli, insects have adapted specialized processes to perceive cues that are beneficial for survival and proliferation. Volatile molecules in the environment can stimulate olfactory receptors (ORs) and gustatory receptors (GRs) in chemosensory organs called sensilla. Specialized proteins located within these sensilla guide and assist chemosensory molecules to the receptors, which then trigger a transduction pathway that elicits behavioral responses. Sensory Neuron Membrane Proteins (SNMPs) are transmembrane proteins found on both gustatory and olfactory sensory organs in insects. There are two forms of these proteins, SNMP-1 and SNMP-2. InDrosophila melanogaster, the function of …
