The First Faith-Based Movement: The Religious Roots Of Social Progressivism In America (1880-1912) In Historical Perspective, Steven Stritt Jan 2014

The First Faith-Based Movement: The Religious Roots Of Social Progressivism In America (1880-1912) In Historical Perspective, Steven Stritt

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This re-evaluation of the published writings of Richard T. Ely, Josiah Strong, and Jane Addams during the Progressive era (1880- 1912) explores the themes of religious idealism and nationalism that figured prominently in the early formulation of modern liberal reform ideology in the United States. A specific focus will be placed on tracing themes of the America’s millennial destiny and how they gradually evolved into prophesies of social transformation through the applied use of social science knowledge. Beyond merely satisfying historical curiosity, this inquiry provides a new perspective from which to consider the fierce clashes over social welfare policy which …

A Study Of Density Fluctuations For Flow Over A Flat Plate Using A Hybrid Reynolds-Average Navier-Stokes Large Eddy/Simulation Approach, John Price

Theses

The objective of this thesis is to study the density fluctuations due to turbulent flow structures generated within a spatially developing boundary layer using a hybrid Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes/Large Eddy Simulation approach. For this study, a flat plat configuration was used. A planar mixing inflow boundary condition was used to add large-scale fluctuations to the flow field. Computations were performed using the Wind-US 3.0 computational fluid dynamics code and the Nichols/Nelson multiscale hybrid RANS/LES approach as implemented in the Wind-US code [7]. The study showed that the normalized density profile normal to the flat plate is sensitive to spanwise grid spacing, …

Three-Dimensional Model Of A Plasma Railgun Using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics, Lloyd M. Jackson Jan 2014

Three-Dimensional Model Of A Plasma Railgun Using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics, Lloyd M. Jackson

Theses

Pulsed plasma accelerators are utilized for in-space propulsion and drivers for inertial fusion concepts. Theoretical models are necessary to assist in diagnostic analysis and for developing scaling laws. SPFMax is a new 3D code which uses smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) to simulate fluid flow, and has been designed specifically for modeling plasmas produced by these pulsed devices. A set of gasdynamic test cases were established and utilized to verify the accuracy of SPFMax for modeling the gas dynamics in a railgun. The free expansion confirmed that the gas expands supersonically without exceeding the predicted maximum value. With the square wave …

Self-Compassion Paradox : A Theoretical Exploration Of Many Compassionate People's Lack Of Self-Compassion, Shihan Qin Jan 2014

Self-Compassion Paradox : A Theoretical Exploration Of Many Compassionate People's Lack Of Self-Compassion, Shihan Qin

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

It seems a common belief that a person cannot have genuine compassion for other people until he can have compassion for himself. However, it seems a pervasive phenomenon that when encountering difficult situations (e.g. failure and fatal disease), many people do not give themselves the compassion they would give to other people in the same situations. This theoretical study aims at supporting my hypothesis that people without self-compassion can still have compassion for others. Relevant evolutionary and neurobiological theories and object relations theories are used to explore this phenomenon. I also apply these two theories to a case study of …

Finding Personal Meaning : Vocational Horticulture Therapy For Individuals With Severe And Persistent Mental Illness, Ariel B. Schneider Jan 2014

Finding Personal Meaning : Vocational Horticulture Therapy For Individuals With Severe And Persistent Mental Illness, Ariel B. Schneider

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

As the medical treatments available for mental illness continue to progress in the context of an ever-growing medical model with the roll-out of the Affordable Care Act, individuals living with severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI) continue to experience barriers to receiving treatment. Furthermore, the treatment modalities largely based in pharmacological interventions and insight-based talk therapies fail to facilitate recovery, or to help individuals reach a place of sustained functionality. This theoretical study investigates vocational horticulture therapy as a way to facilitate recovery for individuals living with SPMI. I use Viktor Frankl's theory of Logotherapy in which he argues for …

A Study Of Object Use : Adults, Special Objects, And Contemporary American Culture, Emily K. Walsh Jan 2014

A Study Of Object Use : Adults, Special Objects, And Contemporary American Culture, Emily K. Walsh

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This thesis is an inquiry into the meaning and functions that special objects hold for American adults. After interviewing 29 adults—10 who identify as male and 19 who identify as female—about their special objects, I found that these objects are felt to have profound meaning and important functions for adults. Objects are found special for possessing superlative physical characteristics—visual, auditory, olfactory, tactile, energetic, or due to their size, weight, or sturdiness. And they are found special for their functions: as signifiers of affiliation or membership in a group; as things that assert and reify personal identity; as things that connect …

From Sadomasochism To Bdsm : Rethinking Object Relations Theorizing Through Queer Theory And Sex-Positive Feminism, Simon Z. Weismantel Jan 2014

From Sadomasochism To Bdsm : Rethinking Object Relations Theorizing Through Queer Theory And Sex-Positive Feminism, Simon Z. Weismantel

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This theoretical thesis explores the phenomenon of BDSM. BDSM is a type of consensual erotic experience that covers a wide range of interactions between or among people. Referencing the compound acronym BDSM, these interactions encompass: bondage and discipline; dominance and submission; and sadism and masochism. This project investigates psychoanalytic conceptualizations of BDSM, often called sadomasochism in analytic literature. In particular, object relations theory conceptualizations of BDSM are explored. Object relations theorists have tended to identify sadomasochism as pathology. This thesis explores and uses queer theory and sex-positive feminism to analyze two important object relations authors' writings on sadomasochism (i.e., Otto …

Chitlins And Lemonade : The Impact Of The Word "Nigger" On College Educated Men In The African Diaspora, Thomas W. Brown Jan 2014

Chitlins And Lemonade : The Impact Of The Word "Nigger" On College Educated Men In The African Diaspora, Thomas W. Brown

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The study is an exploration of the impact the term "nigger" has on college educated men in the African Diaspora. The semi-structured, open-ended questions focus on the manner in which a racial derogatory term (the N-word) remains volatile even when attempted to be used positively by the oppressed. Twelve to 15 college educated men in the African Diaspora were interviewed to discover whether the term is endearing or endangering to the identity of men in the African Diaspora. Overall the study showed that the N-word promotes negative cultural concepts largely propagated through mass media that results in debilitated progress for …

Detection Of Scardovia Genus From Oral Samples In Children Using Real-Time Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction, Jungyi Alexis Liu

All ETDs from UAB

Streptococcus mutans (Sm) and Streptococcus sobrinus (Ss) , are considered the major bacterium associated with dental caries. However, recent findings identify Scardovia species (Sc) is associated with early childhood caries, with or without the presence of Sm or Ss. This IRB approved study quantified the presence of Sm and Sc in saliva by real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) in relation to caries. Saliva samples were collected from 72 preschool children in a high-caries risk community in rural Alabama. SYBR Green-based qPCR using extracted DNA and primers specific for Sm, Ss, Sc and total bacteria determined the copy number (CN/ml). Twenty two …

Identification Of Rna Binding Motifs In The R2 Retrotransposon-Encoded Reverse Transcriptase, Varuni K. Jamburuthugoda, Thomas H. Eickbush Jan 2014

Identification Of Rna Binding Motifs In The R2 Retrotransposon-Encoded Reverse Transcriptase, Varuni K. Jamburuthugoda, Thomas H. Eickbush

Biology

R2 non-LTR retrotransposons insert at a specific site in the 28S rRNA genes of many animal phyla. R2 elements encode a single polypeptide with reverse transcriptase, endonuclease and nucleic acid binding domains. Integration involves separate cleavage of the two DNA strands at the target site and utilization of the released 3′ ends to prime DNA synthesis. Critical to this integration is the ability of the protein to specifically bind 3′ and 5′ regions of the R2 RNA. In this report, alanine mutations in two conserved motifs N-terminal to the reverse transcriptase domain were generated and shown to result in proteins …

The Association Between Attachment And Posttraumatic Growth In A Sample Of U.S. College Students, Keith Alan Morgan Jan 2014

The Association Between Attachment And Posttraumatic Growth In A Sample Of U.S. College Students, Keith Alan Morgan

LSU Master's Theses

The purpose of this study is to examine the association between attachment and posttraumatic growth. Previous literature has suggested that securely attached individuals show more positive methods of coping with stress by activating their attachment system and facing the distress of a traumatic event. On the other hand, insecurely attached individuals display more negative methods of dealing with stress. Those with insecure attachment may avoid the distress of a traumatic event or not successfully activate the attachment system. Thus, it is expected that securely attached individuals will demonstrate higher levels of posttraumatic growth, or positive reactions to the experience of …

Does Reproductive Potential Of Red Snapper In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico Differ Among Natural And Artificial Habitats?, Hilary Day Glenn

LSU Master's Theses

This study compares the reproductive potential of red snapper (Lutjanus campechanus) at artificial and natural habitats. Natural habitats are areas of vertical relief created from biogenic/geologic processes that are thought to be the historical centers of abundance for red snapper in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Red snapper were collected from 2011 to 2013 at three natural habitat sites and two artificial habitat oil and gas platform sites. The mean gonadosomatic indices (GSI), maturity at size and age, spawning indicators, batch fecundity, spawning frequency, and annual fecundity for red snapper at each habitat were analyzed to examine reproductive potential among …

Is The Foliar Yellow Vein Of Some Ornamental Plants Caused By Plant Viruses?, Favio Eduardo Herrera

LSU Master's Theses

Plant viruses have shown to be the cause of the yellow vein symptoms on the foliage of several ornamental plants. In this study five ornamental plants: oxalis (Oxalis debilis var. corymbosa) cv. Golden Veined Oxalis, geranium (Pelargonium peltatum) cv. Crocodile, pseuderanthemum (Pseuderanthemum carruthersii) cv. Golden Net Bush (narrow leaf and broad leaf variants), honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica) cv. Yellow Net Honeysuckle and coleus (Solenostemon scutellarioides) cv. Electric Lime, showing foliar yellow vein were used. Graft transmissions indicated that, except for coleus, the foliar yellow vein of all other plants was caused by infectious agents, likely plant viruses. With the exception of …

Cardiovascular Tolerance And Safety Of Intravenous Lidocaine In The Broiler Chicken (Gallus Gallus Domesticus), Joao Manuel Lemos Brandao Jan 2014

Cardiovascular Tolerance And Safety Of Intravenous Lidocaine In The Broiler Chicken (Gallus Gallus Domesticus), Joao Manuel Lemos Brandao

LSU Master's Theses

Lidocaine, an amide local anesthetic agent, is commonly used in mammals, including humans. There is a general assumption that birds are more sensitive to lidocaine than mammals. Relatively low doses of lidocaine have been suggested to cause toxic effects in birds. While this information appears to be anecdotal, it has been perpetuated in the literature. The overall objective of this thesis research was to determine the tolerance and safety of intravenous lidocaine in broiler chickens. To assess the cardiovascular effects of lidocaine, relative changes on heart rate and mean blood pressure were calculated. Clinically significant cardiovascular effects were defined as …

Analysis Of Data Selection And Inclusion For Highway Safety Manual Model Calibration, Bridget Scheyd Robicheaux

LSU Master's Theses

The application of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials’ (AASHTO) Highway Safety Manual (HSM) to Louisiana roads is a key component to the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development’s (LA DOTD) plan to improve safety on state highways and reach the goal of “Destination Zero Deaths.” To apply the HSM the research sought to develop state-specific HSM calibration factors for eight facility types. During the development process, the data-intensive computational procedure followed to compute the calibration factors revealed numerous issues associated with the inclusion and definitions of various data elements required by the HSM. These included coding …

Decomposition And Entomological Associations Of Swine In Louisiana Micro-Environments, Rachael Ann Farris Jan 2014

Decomposition And Entomological Associations Of Swine In Louisiana Micro-Environments, Rachael Ann Farris

LSU Master's Theses

Flies are commonly used as forensic indicators of an approximate time of death. This measurement of postmortem interval is influenced by factors such as climate and the environment in which the remains are placed. Each environment has its own set of influences that can accelerate or hinder the rate of decomposition. Remains left on dry land will decompose at a faster rate than remains in water due to the accessibility of the remains to scavengers and necrophagus insects. This research serves to provide a start to research into decomposition in the swamp environment of southern Louisiana. Three fetal pigs were …

G-Box Model For The Fate Of Emerging Contaminants In Soil, Eileen Cranfield Jan 2014

G-Box Model For The Fate Of Emerging Contaminants In Soil, Eileen Cranfield

LSU Master's Theses

Pesticides applied to agriculture fields move and react into the soil system. The objective of this research was to develop a model that uses the natural soil processes (diffusion, advection, or reaction type processes in multiple phases) to track pesticides and other emerging contaminants (EMCONs) in the soil over space and time. The model separates the soil into a series of boxes with soil processes passing through and into the boxes. With a system of equations developed from these processes, the model produces a gradient concentration profile, hence the Gradient Box, or G-box Model. The model is first tested against …

Proteomic Analysis Of Mammary Epithelial Cell Development, Alyssa Kay Conly Jan 2014

Proteomic Analysis Of Mammary Epithelial Cell Development, Alyssa Kay Conly

Master's Theses

In this set of studies, a proteomic approach was used to investigate the protein profile of the mammary epithelial cell (MEC) through different stages of mammary development. The HC11 cell line was used to investigate protein changes between undifferentiated and differentiated MEC, which represent the pregnant and lactating states of the cells. This comparison revealed an interesting differential expression profile underscoring many recognized processes that occur in differentiated MECs, while others unveiled differences between MEC differentiation in vitro and in vivo. Primary MEC were also isolated from virgin, pregnant, and primiparous quiescent mice to compare the virgin state of the …

Mitochondrial Genetics Modify Body Composition, Metabolic Efficiency And Myocardial Metabolism, Kimberly Joanne Dunham-Snary Jan 2014

Mitochondrial Genetics Modify Body Composition, Metabolic Efficiency And Myocardial Metabolism, Kimberly Joanne Dunham-Snary

All ETDs from UAB

Obesity and cardiometabolic pathologies have reached epidemic levels worldwide over the last 30 years. Currently, the majority of research investigating possible genetic causes of obesity is focused on nuclear DNA (nDNA). While this has lead to the development of numerous animal models, it is apparent the etiology of obesity is more complex than single gene mutations. Recently it has also been suggested that mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations sustained during evolution as a consequence of our prehistoric environment may influence individual propensity and risk of disease. Contemporary human populations are no longer faced with the challenges of our ancestors such as …

Unraveling The Mechanisms Of Skeletal Muscle Hyperplasia: Juxtaposing Divergent Growth Paradigms, Jacob Michael Froehlich Jan 2014

Unraveling The Mechanisms Of Skeletal Muscle Hyperplasia: Juxtaposing Divergent Growth Paradigms, Jacob Michael Froehlich

All ETDs from UAB

During the course of vertebrate evolution, two major growth paradigms have appeared: determinate, one in which an animal's final size is largely governed by predisposed genetic potential; and indeterminate, a paradigm involving life-long, largely environmentally governed somatic growth. Of the tissues constituting an adult vertebrate, skeletal muscle comprises ≥60% of that organism's mass, making it an important factor in overall body growth. To better understand the process by which many teleost fishes grow throughout their natural lifespans, the clade Danioninae and the model rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were utilized in a comparative manner. Contrary to current hypotheses, fish with indeterminate …
