Grazing And No-Till Cropping Impacts On Nitrogen Retention In Dryland Agroecosystems, Megan L. Mobley, Rebecca L. Mcculley, Ingrid C. Burke, Gary Peterson, David S. Schimel, C. Vernon Cole, Edward T. Elliott, Dwayne G. Westfall

Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Publications

As the world's population increases, marginal lands such as drylands are likely to become more important for food production. One proven strategy for improving crop production in drylands involves shifting from conventional tillage to no-till to increase water use efficiency, especially when this shift is coupled with more intensive crop rotations. Practices such as no-till that reduce soil disturbance and increase crop residues may promote C and N storage in soil organic matter, thus promoting N retention and reducing N losses. By sampling soils 15 yr after a N tracer addition, this study compared long-term soil N retention across several …

Nerve Growth Factor Regulates Neurolymphatic Remodeling During Corneal Inflammation And Resolution., Darci M. Fink, Alicia L. Connor, Philip M. Kelley, Maria M. Steele, Michael A. Hollingsworth, Richard M. Tempero Nov 2014

Nerve Growth Factor Regulates Neurolymphatic Remodeling During Corneal Inflammation And Resolution., Darci M. Fink, Alicia L. Connor, Philip M. Kelley, Maria M. Steele, Michael A. Hollingsworth, Richard M. Tempero

Journal Articles: Eppley Institute

The cellular and physiologic mechanisms that regulate the resolution of inflammation remain poorly defined despite their widespread importance in improving inflammatory disease outcomes. We studied the resolution of two cardinal signs of inflammation-pain and swelling-by investigating molecular mechanisms that regulate neural and lymphatic vessel remodeling during the resolution of corneal inflammation. A mouse model of corneal inflammation and wound recovery was developed to study this process in vivo. Administration of nerve growth factor (NGF) increased pain sensation and inhibited neural remodeling and lymphatic vessel regression processes during wound recovery. A complementary in vivo approach, the corneal micropocket assay, revealed that …

Tcr Triggering By Pmhc Ligands Tethered On Surfaces Via Poly(Ethylene Glycol) Depends On Polymer Length, Zhengyu Ma, David N. Lebard, Sharon M. Loverde, Kim A. Sharp, Michael L. Klein, Dennis E. Discher, Terri H. Finkel

Publications and Research

Antigen recognition by T cells relies on the interaction between T cell receptor (TCR) and peptide-major histocompatibility complex (pMHC) at the interface between the T cell and the antigen presenting cell (APC). The pMHC-TCR interaction is two-dimensional (2D), in that both the ligand and receptor are membrane-anchored and their movement is limited to 2D diffusion. The 2D nature of the interaction is critical for the ability of pMHC ligands to trigger TCR. The exact properties of the 2D pMHC-TCR interaction that enable TCR triggering, however, are not fully understood. Here, we altered the 2D pMHC-TCR interaction by tethering pMHC ligands …

Functional Morphology And Feeding Mechanics Of Billfishes, María Laura Habegger Nov 2014

Functional Morphology And Feeding Mechanics Of Billfishes, María Laura Habegger

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Billfishes (marlins, spearfishes, sailfishes and swordfish) are one of the fastest and largest marine apex predators, and perhaps their most recognizable attribute is their bill or rostrum. The proposed function for this novel structure has ranged from hydrodynamic enhancement to defensive weaponry. However, the most supported hypothesis for its function has been linked to feeding. Billfishes have been observed to subdue their prey with their rostrum, either stunning or cutting them into pieces before ingestion. Due to their large body sizes and pelagic lifestyles a thorough investigation of the function of this structure has been logistically challenging. The goal of …

Once Upon A Time In Chamber Music: An Analysis Of Chamber Works Based On Fairy Tale Themes By Maurice Ravel And Valery Tarakanov, Jennifer Anne Olander Anderson Nov 2014

Once Upon A Time In Chamber Music: An Analysis Of Chamber Works Based On Fairy Tale Themes By Maurice Ravel And Valery Tarakanov, Jennifer Anne Olander Anderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the transformation of the written fairy tale into musical compositions for chamber ensemble with piano. The two works examined in this study are Maurice Ravel's Ma Mere l'Oye (Mother Goose) and Valery Tarakanov's Laryets Skazok, or Chest of Fairy-tales. Through an analysis of the compositional techniques employed by both composers, my goal is to point to those elements which contribute to the work succeeding as a vehicle for bringing aspects of the fairy tale story to life. I chose these two works because among the long list of similar compositions, they are …

Like A Dog Walking On Its Hind Legs: Samuel Johnson And Quakers, Paul A. Lacey Nov 2014

Like A Dog Walking On Its Hind Legs: Samuel Johnson And Quakers, Paul A. Lacey

Quaker Studies

Samuel Johnson liked some individual Quakers but disliked the sect; an examination of his encounters with them, as reported in Boswell's Life, along with reminiscences of the Lloyd family, Mary Knowles and Anna Seward, throws significant light on both Johnson's religious and social views and on some aspects of the Quakerism of his time. The commonly-held view of Quakerism in the Quietist period is, in W. C. Braithwaite's phrase, that these were 'years of outward respectability and inward spiritual decline'. He adds that 'religion as a whole was suffering from the lassitude of Dissent and the devastations of Deism'. Kathryn …

Media Now: A Historical Review Of A Media Literacy Curriculum, Yonty Friesem, Diane Quaglia Beltran, Ed Crane

Journal of Media Literacy Education

The Elizabeth Thoman Archive at the Harrington School of Communication and Media, University of Rhode Island, has the last complete kit of one of the milestones in the early chronology of media literacy, the 1972 Media Now curriculum. This curriculum was the first of its kind, using self-contained lesson modules that were part of a larger series of kits, text references, and accompanying workbook. Its self-directed learning model gave students the opportunity to learn about the media, by doing, responding to, and reflecting on core concepts of media production. Using physical artifacts from the Media Now kit, historical documents, promotional …

Love Stories, Timothy Wombles Nov 2014

Love Stories, Timothy Wombles

Theses

This collection of short stories is entitled “Love Stories.” There are two shorter pieces, seven and thirteen pages respectively, two medium-length pieces, twenty-three pages, and one longer piece of thirty-six pages to bring the total to five stories at one hundred two pages. These stories all concern ‘love’ in the conventional sense of the word, focusing particularly on the love between two people. They explore ‘love’ in unusual or fantastic ways. Most of the stories are science fiction-esque, with one more realist in manner. The use of future technologies or extrapolations of current technologies and societal elements works to express …

A Pilot Study On The Use Of Lecture Tools To Enhance The Teaching Of Pharmacokinetics And Pharmacodynamics, Hollie I. Swanson, Michael T. Piascik

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications

Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics are essential topics contained within the medical curriculum and are highly amenable to active-learning approaches. In this pilot study, we incorporated Lecture Tools, a cloud-based audience response system, into a lecture-based graduate course. Lecture Tools was used by both the instructors and the students during peer presentations. Advantages noted by the instructors include the versatility of the questions that can be presented and the ease with which student assessment can be conducted. Student surveys revealed that, overall, the use of Lecture Tools enhanced student attentiveness and engagement and facilitated student participation in questions and answers. Some disadvantages …

Living sustainable, a vision that I developed at the Design Studio Schwarz, University of Liechtenstein. Living sustainable raises questions about living in balance with our natural resources. We are living on costs of next generations, so we are responsible to make the changes with architectural interventions in our society for our society. Based on „World Energy Council“ report of 2011, our planet will have 2.2 billion inhabitants more on 2050, reaching 9.2 billion, by challenging a huge demand on mobility, food, goods and building as well. In order to having a bigger impact and a better control over growing up-mentioned …

On Form And Logic Of Structures, Feti Selmani Nov 2014

On Form And Logic Of Structures, Feti Selmani

UBT International Conference

In Civil Engineering, every structure harbours some degree of logic within it. Sometimes, it is easy to see it, while sometimes it lies somehow hidden and only a well informed eye can take hold of it. The Natural phenomena are dual in their manifestation. So are Tension and Compression, which represents the basic “genomes” of this interaction and are present within each structure from the simplest to the most complicated one. A structural form represents a physical manifestation of this invisible interplay, which, when in consonance with the natural flow of forces results not only in an economic but in …

Economics Of Milk Yield Losses In One Dairy Farm In Macedonia Associated With Clinical Mastitis, Fetai Valdrina, Nakov Dimitar, Jashari Besirm, Trajchev Metodija

UBT International Conference

Mastitis remains one of the major disease in dairy herds, causing profound economic losses to the entire milk production chain due to changes in the milk quality and milk yield. A one year crosssectional longitudinal survey was carried out to evaluate milk yield losses associated with occurrence of clinical mastitis cases in one dairy herd. Cows that had clinical mastitis and clinically healthy cows during lactation were included in the study. The traits analyzed were the average of the monthly test day milk yields, cow parities and days in lactation while first case of clinical mastitis was occurred. For these …
