Feeding Ecology Of The Sandbar Shark In South Carolina Estuaries Revealed Through Δ13c And Δ15n Stable Isotope Analysis, David S. Shiffman, Bryan S. Frazier, John R. Kucklick, Daniel Abel, Jay Brandes, Gorka Sancho Jan 2014

Feeding Ecology Of The Sandbar Shark In South Carolina Estuaries Revealed Through Δ13c And Δ15n Stable Isotope Analysis, David S. Shiffman, Bryan S. Frazier, John R. Kucklick, Daniel Abel, Jay Brandes, Gorka Sancho

Marine Science

Abstract: Stable isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen (δ13C and δ15N) from muscle samples were used to examine the feeding ecology of a heavily exploited shark species, the Sandbar Shark Carcharhinus plumbeus. Two hundred and sixty two Sandbar Sharks were sampled in five South Carolina estuaries. There were no significant differences in average δ13C or δ15N signatures between estuaries, between sampling years, or between male and female Sandbar Sharks, suggesting that these variables do not affect diet. A potential ontogenetic diet shift between young-of-year and juvenile Sandbar Sharks in South Carolina, similar …

Regulation Of Derivative Financial Instruments (Swaps, Options, And Futures), Ronald H. Filler, Jerry W. Markham Jan 2014

Regulation Of Derivative Financial Instruments (Swaps, Options, And Futures), Ronald H. Filler, Jerry W. Markham

Books

As a result of the Dodd-Frank Act Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010, derivatives regulation has become a hot topic on Wall Street and is, therefore, of much interest to law firms with financial institutions as clients. An increasing number of classes on this subject are being taught at law schools around the country, but, to date, there has been no casebook on the subject.

This casebook explores the regulation of swaps, futures and options by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the Securities and Exchange Commission. It examines the regulatory history of derivative instruments and traces …

Communicative Universal Convertibility Matter-Energy-Information, Florentin Smarandache, Stefan Vladutescu Jan 2014

Communicative Universal Convertibility Matter-Energy-Information, Florentin Smarandache, Stefan Vladutescu

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The research aims to reveal and prove the thesis of the neutral and convertibility relationship between constituent constructive elements of the universe: matter, energy and information. The approach perspective is a computationally-communicative-neutrosophic one. We configure a coherent and cohesive ideation line. Matter, energy and information are fundamental elements of the world. Among them, there is an inextricable multiple, elastic and evolutionary connection. The elements are defined by the connections between them. Our hypothesis is that the relationship between matter, energy and information is a neutral one. This relationship is not required by the evidence. At this level, it does not …

Evidence For Selection Acting On Immune-Related Iron Transport Genes In Wild Rodents, Dylan Adam Duchen Jan 2014

Evidence For Selection Acting On Immune-Related Iron Transport Genes In Wild Rodents, Dylan Adam Duchen

Public Health Theses

Every organism requires certain resources that they cannot endogenously produce; one such dietary component, iron, is essential for many basic cellular functions and the host-immune response. By studying patterns of genetic diversity within the genes involved in immune-related iron transport we can achieve a greater understanding of the evolutionary mechanisms which drive these processes, including those underlying host-pathogen interactions.

This thesis describes further evidence of patterns indicative of positive selection within apical regions of the transferrin receptor complex (Tfr1), sites known to be involved in an evolutionary arms race with pathogens, within two rodent species endemic to Europe and Asia, …

Effect Of Organic Carbon, C: N Ratio And Light On The Growth And Lipid Productivity Of Microalgae/Cyanobacteria Coculture, Athens Silaban, Rong Bai, M. Teresa Gutierrez-Wing, Ioan I. Negulescu, Kelly A. Rusch Jan 2014

Rusch

Faculty Publications

Current culture methods based on monocultures under phototrophic regimes are prone to contamination, predation, and collapse. Native cultures of multiple species are adapted to the local conditions and are more robust against contamination and predation. Growth, lipid and biomass productivity of a Louisiana native coculture of microalgae (Chlorella vulgaris) and cyanobacteria (Leptolyngbya sp.) in heterotrophic and mixotrophic regimes were investigated. Dextrose and sodium acetate at C:N ratios of 15:1 and 30:1 under heterotrophic (dark) and mixotrophic (400 μmol m-2 s-1) regimes were compared with autotrophic controls. The carbon source and C:N ratio impacted growth and biomass productivity. Mixotrophic cultures with …

Blanche Dubois: Feminist Forerunner, Andrea M. Grey Jan 2014

Blanche Dubois: Feminist Forerunner, Andrea M. Grey

Theses

Andrea M. Grey’s thesis, Blanche Dubois: Feminist Forerunner, explores Blanche Dubois from Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire as a proto-feminist figure. Challenging traditional interpretations of Blanche as merely fragile or delusional, Grey argues that Blanche exhibits traits of modern feminism, advocating for female independence, financial self-sufficiency, and resistance to patriarchal oppression.

Blanche’s education, career as a teacher, and efforts to manage her family’s estate position her as an independent woman in a male-dominated world. However, societal constraints and gendered double standards undermine her agency. Her sexual autonomy is condemned while her male counterparts’ indiscretions are ignored. Blanche’s opposition …

Time For T? Immunoinformatics Addresses Vaccine Design For Neglected Tropical And Emerging Infectious Diseases, Frances E. Terry, Leonard Moise, Rebecca F. Martin, Melissa Torres, Nils Pilotte, Steven A. Williams, Anne S. De Groot Jan 2014

Time For T? Immunoinformatics Addresses Vaccine Design For Neglected Tropical And Emerging Infectious Diseases, Frances E. Terry, Leonard Moise, Rebecca F. Martin, Melissa Torres, Nils Pilotte, Steven A. Williams, Anne S. De Groot

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Vaccines have been invaluable for global health, saving lives and reducing healthcare costs, while also raising the quality of human life. However, newly emerging infectious diseases (EID) and more well-established tropical disease pathogens present complex challenges to vaccine developers; in particular, neglected tropical diseases, which are most prevalent among the world's poorest, include many pathogens with large sizes, multistage life cycles and a variety of nonhuman vectors. EID such as MERS-CoV and H7N9 are highly pathogenic for humans. For many of these pathogens, while their genomes are available, immune correlates of protection are currently unknown. These complexities make developing vaccines …
