Mediated Histories: Representations Of Nineteenth-Century American Life At Greenfield Village And Crossroads Village, Jaclyn Millichamp Jan 2014

Mediated Histories: Representations Of Nineteenth-Century American Life At Greenfield Village And Crossroads Village, Jaclyn Millichamp

Wayne State University Theses

Living history museums are a prevalent form of history museum in which periods in history are portrayed through the use of artifacts and structures from the era, as well through the use of interpreters, which demonstrate processes from the past or discuss events with visitors. These sites have been scrutinized in the last few decades due to their constructed nature that often downplays negative aspects of the past. Since history is multi-faceted, it is impossible to present a clear recreation of history, and therefore, the creators of these sites have considerable leeway in how they choose to depict aspects of …

The Investigation Of The Molecular Mechanism Of Rhodopsin Activation By Small Angle Neutron Scattering And Small Angle X-Ray Scattering Techniques, Kurt William Van Delinder Jan 2014

The Investigation Of The Molecular Mechanism Of Rhodopsin Activation By Small Angle Neutron Scattering And Small Angle X-Ray Scattering Techniques, Kurt William Van Delinder

Wayne State University Theses

Rhodopsin is a visual pigment found within the rod photoreceptor cells of the retina. It is a visual protein found within human beings and commonly shared amongst other vertebrate species. The major pigment protein is responsible for converting photons into chemical signals, which stimulates biological processes in the nervous system, and this allows the ability to then sense light [4]. The process of how rhodopsin is activated is believed to be understood with the introduction of a time ordered sequence of intermediate states. However, there are still major gaps and inconsistencies regarding the large-scale conformational changes that follow photoactivation. The …

Characterization Of Adult Zebrafish Retinal Regeneration Following Two Different Damage Models, Jennifer Lee Thomas Jan 2014

Characterization Of Adult Zebrafish Retinal Regeneration Following Two Different Damage Models, Jennifer Lee Thomas

Wayne State University Dissertations

Unlike mammals, zebrafish can regenerate all of their retinal neurons through Müller glial cells, which respond to retinal damage by re-entering the cell cycle to create clusters of progenitor cells. The progenitors continue to proliferate as they migrate to the site of damage, where they ultimately differentiate into new retinal neurons. In contrast, Müller glia of the mammalian retina respond to injury with reactive gliosis, which if persistent, can lead to loss of Müller cell function and devastating vision loss. Despite this, multiple lines of evidence suggest that mammalian Müller glial cells possess a latent ability to regenerate retinal neurons. …

Adaptations Of Bacterial Flagella To Animal And Plant Hosts, Alshae’ R. Logan Jan 2014

Adaptations Of Bacterial Flagella To Animal And Plant Hosts, Alshae’ R. Logan

Theses

Flagella have been studied for more than a hundred years, yet there remains a simple and powerful question about how to further make use of the recent wave of genomic data to find differences between flagellar genes across diverse bacterial strains. With the comparative power of bacterial genomic data, we propose that flagellar gene sequences may be used as genetic markers that indicate evolutionary adaptations of different bacteria for different hosts. We specifically proposed to identify and utilize genetic sequence differences that may diagnose for the presence of bacterial pathogens found to infect different hosts, specifically animal versus plant hosts. …

Book Review: Juries In The 21st Century, By Jacqueline Horan, Vanessa Macdonnell Jan 2014

Book Review: Juries In The 21st Century, By Jacqueline Horan, Vanessa Macdonnell

Canadian Journal of Law and Technology

In Juries in the 21st Century, Jacqueline Horan immerses the reader in a discussion of how jury trials operate, how they could be more effective, and how they should adapt to emerging technologies. The book makes three contributions to the existing legal literature. First, it challenges basic assumptions about how juries operate. Horan demonstrates that not all features of modern jury trials are essential or even useful. She argues convincingly that the existing features of the jury system should only be retained if they contribute positively to the process by which the jury arrives at a verdict. This leads Horan …

Black Existential Philosophy: Truth In Virtue Of Self-Discovery, James B. Haile Jan 2014

Black Existential Philosophy: Truth In Virtue Of Self-Discovery, James B. Haile

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the past 20 years, within the discipline of philosophy there has been a burgeoning interest in the fields of Race theory, Africana, and African American philosophy, especially in the scholarship and questions concerning the experience and meaning of black existence; that is, within black existential philosophy. Despite this interest, though, there has yet to be a sustained study of the categories of black existential philosophy nor its concepts--there seems to have been the acceptance of traditional European existential categories and concepts merely applied to the questions of black existence. This work, though, offers a sustained examination of the existential …

Is Wrong Life All That Is Possible? Adorno And Aquinas On Ethics, Benjamin Hampshire Jan 2014

Is Wrong Life All That Is Possible? Adorno And Aquinas On Ethics, Benjamin Hampshire

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Theodor Adorno's ethical thought is encapsulated in his famous aphorism "Wrong life cannot be lived rightly." This dissertation explicates this alarming declaration, revealing the metaphysical, epistemological, and anthropological analyses that place Adorno's ethical thought into this intractable predicament. I argue that Adorno's ethical thought, while of absolute importance and worthy of consideration, can be moved forward through an engagement with the ethical thought of Thomas Aquinas, toward the possibility of right life.

A Phenomenological Analysis Of The Relationship Between Intersubjectivity And Imagination In Hannah Arendt, Kazue Koishikawa Jan 2014

A Phenomenological Analysis Of The Relationship Between Intersubjectivity And Imagination In Hannah Arendt, Kazue Koishikawa

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My dissertation is a phenomenological analysis of the relationship between intersubjectivity and imagination in Hannah Arendt. The objective of my dissertation is to demonstrate that Arendt has a theory of imagination that provides a substratum to explain her key notions such as "action," "freedom" "beginning," "history," "power," "understanding," "appearance," "space of appearance," and "judgment." In other words, my dissertation shows that not only are these notions related, and not only do they characterize Arendt's account of the political life as fundamentally intersubjective, but they are also derived from her peculiar understanding of imagination that arises within the phenomenological legacy.

The Role Of Erk5 In Dopamine Neuronal Survival, Mayur Parmar Jan 2014

The Role Of Erk5 In Dopamine Neuronal Survival, Mayur Parmar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERKs) 1, 2, and 5 play important physiological roles in neurogenesis, neutrite outgrowth, and neuronal viability in the central nervous system. In this study, ERK1, 2, and 5 expression and activation were examined in the substantia nigra (SN), striatum (STR), and ventral tegmental area (VTA) during postnatal development and normal aging using western blot analysis. An age-related decrease in phosphorylated/activated ERK5 (p-ERK5) was observed in the SN and STR, whereas an increase in total ERK1 was observed in all three regions. Higher expression of total and phosphorylated ERK5 was observed at postnatal day zero (PND0) in …

Methodology For Trace And Ultratrace Analysis Of Primary Amines, Sean Christopher Pawlowski Jan 2014

Methodology For Trace And Ultratrace Analysis Of Primary Amines, Sean Christopher Pawlowski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the study of lipids, or "lipidomics," methods for the separation and identification of specific trace compounds are highly sought. Microdroplet techniques have allowed for the ability to handle and detect these trace amounts. The use of low volumes allows for a decrease of the effective mean free path allowing chemical reactions to be carried out efficiently at lower concentrations by performing the reactions in microdroplets as opposed to bulk containers. Microdroplets created on microfluidic devices as segmented flow plugs have the advantage of efficient mixing and minimal dilution or dispersion relative to other nanoliter scale capillary reaction methods. The …

The Search For Novel Antibiotic Compounds Through Molecular Modeling And Structure-Function Analysis Of Cspe In E. Coli K12, Andre Duane Samuel Jan 2014

The Search For Novel Antibiotic Compounds Through Molecular Modeling And Structure-Function Analysis Of Cspe In E. Coli K12, Andre Duane Samuel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Escherichia coli K12 has the capacity to express nine Csp (Cold shock-related protein) gene products (CspA-I). These proteins share between 29 and 83 percent identity in their amino acid sequences and only one, CspA, has a solved crystal structure. One of the Csps shown to be involved in chromosome condensation is a 6.3 kDa protein called CspE and deletion studies of its homologues in Bacillus subtilis show that at least one of the Csp proteins is required for cell viability. All of the Csp proteins studied to date bind to single stranded nucleic acids. Knowing that at least one of …

Design And Synthesis Of Pyrimidine Fused Heterocycles As Single Agents With Combination Chemotherapy Potential, Roheeth Pavana Jan 2014

Design And Synthesis Of Pyrimidine Fused Heterocycles As Single Agents With Combination Chemotherapy Potential, Roheeth Pavana

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation describes the design, synthesis and biological evaluation of pyrimidine fused heterocycles as single agents with combination chemotherapy potential. Major limitations of cancer chemotherapy include dose limiting toxicities of clinically used agents and the development of multidrug resistance by the tumor. Agents that interfere with microtubules are important antitumor agents. Tumor angiogenic mechanisms that are vital for tumor growth and metastasis are targeted by antiangiogenic agents. Antiangiogenic agents are usually not tumoricidal but are mainly cytostatic. Combination chemotherapy with antiangiogenic and cytotoxic agents have shown significant promise and several studies with such combinations are in progress in the clinic. …

Dopamine Transporter (Dat), Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor (Nachr), And Metabotropic Glutamate Receptor 2 (Mglu2) Irreversible Probes For Identifying Anti-Psychostimulant Therapeutics, Shaili Aggarwal Jan 2014

Dopamine Transporter (Dat), Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor (Nachr), And Metabotropic Glutamate Receptor 2 (Mglu2) Irreversible Probes For Identifying Anti-Psychostimulant Therapeutics, Shaili Aggarwal

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Numerous in vitro and in vivo studies implicate that certain ligands that interact with DAT, nAChRs, and mGlu2 have tremendous potential as anti-addiction therapeutics. However, understanding how these promising anti-addiction compounds interact with their major drug targets at the molecular level is limited because of the absence of human DAT, nAChRs, and mGlu2 x-ray crystal structures. This knowledge gap is important towards rationally designing new therapeutics for psychostimulant abuse and addiction. The objective of this research was to develop irreversible chemical probes based on promising anti-addiction lead compounds (i.e., pyrovalerone, bupropion, BINA, etc) to map their binding sites and poses …

Dopamine Transporter (Dat) And Metabotropic Glutamate Receptor 5 (Mglu5) Irreversible Probes For Identifying Anti-Psychostimulant Therapeutics, Ranganadh Velagaleti Jan 2014

Dopamine Transporter (Dat) And Metabotropic Glutamate Receptor 5 (Mglu5) Irreversible Probes For Identifying Anti-Psychostimulant Therapeutics, Ranganadh Velagaleti

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Numerous behavioral studies indicate that dopamine transporter (DAT) inhibitors and metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGlu5) negative allosteric modulators (NAMs) possess promising anti-addiction therapeutic properties. However, the lack of human DAT (hDAT) and mGlu5 X-ray crystal structures makes it difficult to understand how these promising anti-addiction compounds interact with their major drug targets at the molecular level. This knowledge gap represents an important problem towards rationally designing new therapeutics for numerous addiction disorders. The objective of this research was to develop irreversible chemical probes based on select DAT inhibitors and mGlu5 NAMs in order to map the corresponding binding sites and …

Communication And Response-Ability: Levinas And Kierkegaard In Conversation, Beth A. Walter Jan 2014

Communication And Response-Ability: Levinas And Kierkegaard In Conversation, Beth A. Walter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This project contends that hope for ethical communication in a postmodern age lies in the ability to rethink ethics in terms of "existential pathos." To that end, this study locates communicative responsibility in the responsive element of the self-other relation by relying primarily on the work of the twentieth-century Lithuanian-born French philosopher Emmanuel Levinas. I maintain that Levinas's disruption of the philosophical tradition informs a communication ethic comprised of dialectical, dialogical, and rhetorical modes of interpersonal interaction that are fundamentally rooted in an existential understanding of human striving. Further, I assert that these dialectical, dialogical and rhetorical components are best …

Violent Video Games And The Rights Of Children And Parents: A Critique Of Brown V. Entertainment Merchants Association, Martin Guggenheim Jan 2014

Violent Video Games And The Rights Of Children And Parents: A Critique Of Brown V. Entertainment Merchants Association, Martin Guggenheim

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

In 2011, in Brown v. Entertainment Merchants Association, the Supreme Court declared unconstitutional California's effort to regulate the sale of certain video games to minors. The Court's ruling deserves careful review because it has halted legislative efforts to regulate video games. Although the ruling is unobjectionable to the extent it concluded the challenged statute was unconstitutionally vague, the decision went well beyond that. It would be one thing if the Court left open room for legislatures to draft clearer legislation that eliminated ambiguity regarding what video games are unsuitable for minors. But the Court held that because video games are …

Beastly Sodomites And The Shameless Urban Future, Farid Azfar Jan 2014

Beastly Sodomites And The Shameless Urban Future, Farid Azfar

History Faculty Works

This article offers a reading of some texts that reflect what sodomy meant to this particular moment, that which followed the sodomy executions of 1726. I concentrate, in particular, on two: a polemical attack by a self-professed “Philogynus” published in a newspaper the week after the executions and a chapter of a half-fictional narrative supposedly penned by a celebrity criminal, James Dalton, who makes “pleasant and remarkable” adventures into the world of the mollies, accompanied by a man, Sukey Haws, who is “neither a downright Pick-pocket, a downright Sodomite, or a downright Bug, tho’ a Part of every one of …

Mir-382 Inhibits Tumor Growth And Enhance Chemosensitivity In Osteosarcoma, Meng Xu, Hua Jin, Cheng-Xiong Xu, Bo Sun, Zhi Mao, Wen-Zhi Bi, Yan Wang Jan 2014

Mir-382 Inhibits Tumor Growth And Enhance Chemosensitivity In Osteosarcoma, Meng Xu, Hua Jin, Cheng-Xiong Xu, Bo Sun, Zhi Mao, Wen-Zhi Bi, Yan Wang

Pharmacy Faculty Publications

Dysregulation of miRNAs is involved in osteosarcoma (OS). Here, we demonstrate that miR-382 is decreased in specimens of OS patients with a poor chemoresponse compared to those with a good chemoresponse. In addition, our clinical data show that decreased miR-382 was associated with poor survival in OS patients. Overexpression of miR-382 inhibited cell growth and chemoresistance by targeting KLF12 and HIPK3, respectively. In contrast, inhibition of miR-382 or overexpression of target genes stimulated OS cell growth and chemoresistance both in vitro and in vivo. Taken together, these findings suggest that miR-382 is a tumor suppressor miRNA and induction of …

Multiscale Design Of Cell-Type–Specific Pharmacokinetic/Pharmacodynamic Models For Personalized Medicine: Application To Temozolomide In Brain Tumors, A. Ballesta, Q. Zhou, X. Zhang, H. Lv, J. M. Gallo Jan 2014

Multiscale Design Of Cell-Type–Specific Pharmacokinetic/Pharmacodynamic Models For Personalized Medicine: Application To Temozolomide In Brain Tumors, A. Ballesta, Q. Zhou, X. Zhang, H. Lv, J. M. Gallo

Pharmacy Faculty Publications

Optimizing anticancer therapeutics needs to account for variable drug responses in heterogeneous cell populations within the tumor as well as in organs of toxicity. To address cell heterogeneity, we propose a multiscale modeling approach—from in vitro to preclinical and clinical studies—to develop cell-type–specific pharmacokinetic–pharmacodynamic (PK-PD) models. A physiologically based mechanistic modeling approach integrating data from aqueous solutions, U87 glioma cells, mice, and cancer patients was utilized to characterize the brain disposition of temozolomide (TMZ), the cornerstone of chemotherapy against glioblastoma multiforme. The final model represented intracellular normal brain and brain tumor compartments in which TMZ pH-dependent conversion to the DNA-alkylating …

The Relationship Between Sensation Seeking, Psychopathy, And Deception, Ashley D. Dickey Jan 2014

The Relationship Between Sensation Seeking, Psychopathy, And Deception, Ashley D. Dickey

Modern Psychological Studies

Psychopathy has many implications for society at large. These individuals are likely to commit violent crimes, manifest other antisocial behavior, and make up a large portion of the prison population. This study aims to establish a relationship between sensation seeking, psychopathy, and deception. A sample of 100 undergraduate students enrolled in psychology courses in a southern university completed three questionnaires assessing their level of sensation seeking (SSS-V), deception (MACH-IV), and psychopathy (TriPM). Each of the three distinct phenotypic constructs measured by the TriPM were also correlated with total SSS-V and MACH-IV scores. Pearson and Spearman correlations revealed significant relationships between …

Law’S Laboratory: Developing International Law On Investment Protection As Common Law, Frédéric G. Sourgens Jan 2014

Law’S Laboratory: Developing International Law On Investment Protection As Common Law, Frédéric G. Sourgens

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

Abstract: This Article posits that international law on investment protection develops as a common law through adjudication of investor-state disputes. It reviews the three prevalent theories on the development of international law on investment protection. These three theories are (a) that investor-state decisions reflect a new customary international law, (b) that investor-state decisions are a potentially corrupt tool of corporate usurpation of international law, and (c) that investor-state disputes form part of a self-contained legal regime. The Article explains that each theory fails because it superimposes policy preferences not present in investor-state decisions. In rejecting these theories, this Article argues …
