Hoxa3 was the first Hox gene to be mutated by gene targeting in mice and is required for the development of multiple endoderm and neural crest cell (NCC)-derived structures in the pharyngeal region. Previous studies have shown that the Hoxa3 null mutant lacks third pharyngeal pouch derivatives, the thymus and parathyroids by E18.5, and organ-specific markers are absent or downregulated during initial organogenesis. Our current analysis of the Hoxa3 null mutant shows that organ-specific domains did undergo initial patterning, but the location and timing of key regional markers within the pouch, including Tbx1, Bmp4 and Fgf8, were altered. …

Less Is More: Applying A Modified Reasonable Compensation Standard To Eliminate The Inconsistencies Among The Payroll Tax Bases And The Net Investment Income Tax Base Under The Affordable Care Act, John S. Treu
Nebraska Law Review
The original policy for the implementation of payroll taxes was to impose a tax on wages as both a funding mechanism for, and a limitation to, qualifying for social security. However, the self-employment tax base developed severe inconsistencies with this original policy and among different tax entities by including certain returns on capital investments in the tax base. At present, different payroll tax obligations arise for similarly situated taxpayers based solely on how business owners elect to be taxed under the check-the-box regulations. These inconsistencies resulted from misguided efforts by Congress and the Treasury to view the payroll tax base …

Humane use of preclinical large animal cancer models plays a critical role in understanding cancer biology and developing therapeutic treatments. Among the large animal candidates, goats have great potentials as sustainable sources for large animal cancer model development. Goats are easier to handle and cheaper to raise. The genome of the goats has been sequenced recently. It has been known that goats develop skin, adrenal cortex, breast and other types of cancers. Technically, goats are subject to somatic cell nuclear transfer more efficiently and exhibit better viability through the cloning process. Towards the development of a goat cancer model, we …

Shuffled Frog Leaping Algorithm Optimization For Ac--Dc Optimal Power Flow Dispatch, Abolfazl Rahiminejad, Arash Alimardani, Behrooz Vahidi, Seyed Hossein Hosseinian
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper, a simple-implemented and reliable AC--DC optimal power flow (OPF) is proposed. Although high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission lines are being increasingly used in power systems, new optimization algorithms such as evolutionary and memetic algorithms, which never stick in local minimum, so far have not been implemented in the AC--DC OPF problem. An evolutionary algorithm known as the shuffled frog leaping algorithm (SFLA) is proposed in this paper to solve the OPF dispatch in an AC--DC power system (including both high-voltage alternating current and HVDC transmission lines). The implementation of the AC--DC OPF with these kinds of methods …

Stability Analysis Of Multimachine Thermal Power Systems Using The Nature-Inspired Modified Cuckoo Search Algorithm, Shivakumar Rangasamy, Panneerselvam Manickam
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The stability of modern interconnected thermal power systems is greatly affected by the presence of low-frequency inertial oscillations in the system, due to various forms of disturbances experienced. This paper provides an efficient damping solution to these oscillations based on nature-inspired modified cuckoo search algorithm-based controller design. The proposed controller design is formulated as a parameter optimization problem based on damping ratio and time-domain error deviations. The effectiveness of the proposed damping controller design is illustrated by performing the nonlinear time domain simulations of the test multimachine power systems under various operating conditions and disturbances. Moreover, an exhaustive comparative stability …

The Design Of An Embedded Spinal Cord Stimulator, Fi̇kret Yalçinkaya, Ali̇ Erbaş
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Spinal cord stimulation is a physical therapy methodology utilizing electrical impulses, pulses, or a combination of various standard electrical waveforms to block pain. However, standard forms are not functioning effectively for each illness due to the unique conditions of the patient. Therefore, patient-specific waveforms (or user-defined waveforms) integrated with nondestructive, complete, or partially noninvasive and effective medical instruments to help relieve pain are required. In the literature, 2 different designs have been discussed: the bedside/portable and the implantable/surgical types. This work is introducing a new hybrid type: a portable touch-screen multichannel embedded spinal cord stimulator. This work is made of …

Simulation Of A Flowing Snow Avalanche Using Molecular Dynamics, Deni̇zhan Güçer, Hali̇l Bülent Özgüç
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper presents an approach for the modeling and simulation of a flowing snow avalanche, which is formed of dry and liquefied snow that slides down a slope, using molecular dynamics and the discrete element method. A particle system is utilized as a base method for the simulation and marching cubes with real-time shaders are employed for rendering. A uniform grid-based neighbor search algorithm is used for collision detection for interparticle and particle-terrain interactions. A mass-spring model of the collision resolution is employed to mimic the compressibility of the snow and particle attraction forces are put into use between the …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
An Early Pleistocene lacustrine faunal assemblage from Pasinler (Erzurum Province, north-eastern Turkey) is described, which encompasses 13 mollusc, 5 fish, 2 amphibian, 1 reptile, and 1 mammal species. The autochthonous freshwater mollusc fauna indicates shallow stagnant waters and a fine-sandy to muddy lake bottom, grown with submersed plants. The fish community (Leuciscus sp., Rutilus sp., Chondrostoma sp., Leuciscinae sp. 1 and 2, and Capoeta sp.) and autochthonous herpetofauna (Latonia sp. and Natrix sp.) provide evidence of a well-oxygenised palaeolake with rich periphyton and partially rocky to gravelly bottom. Moreover, the presence of the terrestrial snail Caspicyclotus cf. akramowsii, the peri- …

First Report Of Sphaeronitid Blastozoans (Echinodermata) In The Middle Ordovician Of The Taurides, Turkey, Elise Nardin, Mehmet Cemal Göncüoğlu, Bertrand Lefebvre
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Articulated echinoderm remains are described for the first time in the Ordovician of Turkey. They occur massively, forming a relatively thick cystoid bed within the detrital limestone succession of the Sobova Formation (latest Dapingianearliest Darriwilian) in the western Taurus Mountains. The cystoid bed encompasses a monospecific echinoderm assemblage of densely packed, 3-dimensionally preserved thecae. The presence of numerous suborganised plates with diplopore respiratory structures suggests probable affinities with sphaeronitid blastozoans. Comparable sphaeronitid dense beds are well known in the early Darriwilian of Baltica, and in the mid Darriwilian of the Middle East and Asian terranes.

Anthropogenic activities contaminate soils with heavy metal concentrations including lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), and chromium (Cr). Pb has higher potential for ready accumulation, sedimentation, and poisoning of the soil than other heavy metals. The present study was conducted to induce Pb tolerance, in solution culture-grown cotton, by exogenous glycinebetaine (GB) application using 3 levels of Pb (0, 50, and 100 µm) and 2 GB levels (0 and 1 mM). The results revealed that Pb stress decreased gas exchange characteristics (net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, water use efficiency, chlorophyll, carotenoids, and SPAD value) and the performance of …

Diploid and tetraploid wild relatives of cultivated peanut are genetically diverse, providing rich sources of genetic resources for tapping resistance to various biotic and abiotic stresses. Arachis glabrata Benth. is a tetraploid (2n = 40) rhizomatous species that is reported to be tolerant to water deficit stress. Identification of A. glabrata accessions with high SPAD chlorophyll meter reading (SCMR) and low specific leaf area (SLA) values would be an option for improving water deficit stress tolerance in peanut. An investigation was undertaken to study the genetic diversity of A. glabrata accessions using molecular markers as well as surrogate traits (SLA …

Flower Closure In The Field Bindweed (Convolvulus Arvensis): A Field Test Of The Pollination Hypothesis, Pavol Prokop, Dominika Neupauerova
Turkish Journal of Botany
Although the behavioral plasticity of flower traits has received considerable attention, its adaptive value is not thoroughly understood. We experimentally examined flower opening/closure in field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis), a species with short flower persistence (1 day) in which adaptive responses to pollination were not previously expected. In line with the pollination hypothesis we suggested that flower exposure in this species should respond to pollination. More specifically, we predicted that flower closure in the pollinated flowers would be quicker than that in unpollinated flowers. As predicted, the unpollinated flowers were open for a longer time than the pollinated flowers. There was …

Subcellular Localization And Developmental Regulation Of Cytosolic, Soluble Pyrophosphatase Isoforms In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Zahi̇de Nesli̇han Öztürk, Steffen Greiner, Thomas Rausch
Turkish Journal of Botany
Pyrophosphate (PP_{I}) is the by-product of several reversible key reactions of primary metabolism. Thus, generated PP_i should be removed by hydrolysis via pyrophosphatases to prevent accumulation and to drive anabolism. In plastids, a plastidic, soluble pyrophosphatase splits PP_i released by ADPG pyrophosphorylase. The cytosolic PP_i pool is believed to be hydrolyzed by tonoplast- and/or Golgi-integral H^{+}-translocating pyrophosphatases. The Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. genome encodes 6 soluble pyrophosphatase isoforms (PPas), 1 of which was shown to be localized in plastids. The remaining 5 of those PPas (PPas 1-5) are more similar to each other with highly conserved protein sequences. They all …
