Proactive Management Of Pneumonia Epizootics In Bighorn Sheep In Montana, Sarah N. Sells
Proactive Management Of Pneumonia Epizootics In Bighorn Sheep In Montana, Sarah N. Sells
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Pneumonia epizootics are a major challenge for management of bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis), often causing high mortality and subsequent long-term impacts that may continue for decades. There have been at least 22 epizootics in herds in Montana from 1979‒2013, including 1 that led to a herd’s extirpation, several that appear to be affecting herds up to 3 decades later, and 11 in the last 6 years. The disease is complex and associated risk factors are poorly understood. A lack of tools to help predict and proactively manage risk of pneumonia epizootics in attempt to prevent die-offs has led …
Lowveld Practices In Mahenye, Zimbabwe: A Critical Analysis Of Resilience In A Marginalized Southern African Community, Scott Byington
Lowveld Practices In Mahenye, Zimbabwe: A Critical Analysis Of Resilience In A Marginalized Southern African Community, Scott Byington
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The concept of resilience has been developed by scholars in the social-ecological systems resilience and community resilience/disaster literature. While initially a descriptive model, the framework of resilience has since integrated both literatures and become a prescriptive tool for sustainable development initiatives. Political ecologists critically argue that the current conceptualization of resilience is problematic given resilience scholars’ lack of engagement with situational social complexities related to power and knowledge. They also argue that mainstream resilience literature is devoid of cultural, historical and political analysis. As such, individuals and communities at the margins of power may vulnerable to the application of resilience …
The Synthesis And Study Of Heterocyclic, Dimeric And Chiral Ligands For The Multidrug-Resistance Transporter, Scott Steiger
The Synthesis And Study Of Heterocyclic, Dimeric And Chiral Ligands For The Multidrug-Resistance Transporter, Scott Steiger
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The development of multidrug resistance in tumor cells has been recognized as a major obstacle to successful cancer treatment. Tumor cells in vitro and in vivo can develop multidrug resistance (MDR) to the lethal effects of the cytotoxic drugs used to treat them, with about 40% of cancers going on to develop MDR. There are multiple factors that lead to MDR but the factor that we will be exploring in this dissertation is the expression of multiple drug resistance gene 1 and the over expression of multi drug resistance protein 1(MDR1, also known as P-glycoprotein or P-gp). MDR1 has also …
Dielectric Characterization Of Coastal Cartilage Chondrocytes, Michael W. Stacey, Ahmet C. Sabuncu, Ali Beskok
Dielectric Characterization Of Coastal Cartilage Chondrocytes, Michael W. Stacey, Ahmet C. Sabuncu, Ali Beskok
Bioelectrics Publications
BACKGROUND: Chondrocytes respond to biomechanical and bioelectrochemical stimuli by secreting appropriate extracellular matrix proteins that enable the tissue to withstand the large forces it experiences. Although biomechanical aspects of cartilage are well described, little is known of the bioelectrochemical responses. The focus of this study is to identify bioelectrical characteristics of human costal cartilage cells using dielectric spectroscopy.
METHODS: Dielectric spectroscopy allows non-invasive probing of biological cells. An in house computer program is developed to extract dielectric properties of human costal cartilage cells from raw cell suspension impedance data measured by a microfluidic device. The dielectric properties of chondrocytes are …
Craft And The Corporeal In Composition: Embodied Metaphors In Writing Practice, Lauren Macdonald
Craft And The Corporeal In Composition: Embodied Metaphors In Writing Practice, Lauren Macdonald
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
The pervasive container metaphor of language used in writing classes carries connotations that writing is a product containing meaning, rather than a process of meaning-making, inquiry, and discovery. This framework is both problematic and harmful as it fails to capture the embodied nature of writing, ignoring the body as a crucial part of composing. As an alternative, this project moves towards a view of writing as techne in which craft and technique are deeply intertwined through the dynamic relationship between text, body, and context. Working from this concept of techne, this project suggests metaphors can be extended into the physical …
Characterization Of Rift Valley Fever Virus Nucleocapsid Protein-Rna Binding Interactions And Development Of A High-Throughput Screening Assay For Identification Of N-Rna Binding Inhibitors, Mary Lee Ellenbecker
Characterization Of Rift Valley Fever Virus Nucleocapsid Protein-Rna Binding Interactions And Development Of A High-Throughput Screening Assay For Identification Of N-Rna Binding Inhibitors, Mary Lee Ellenbecker
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is an emerging infectious pathogen that causes severe disease in humans and livestock and has the potential for global spread. Currently, there is no treatment for RVFV infection and there is no proven safe and effective vaccine. Inhibition of RNA binding to RVFV nucleocapsid (N) protein represents an innovative antiviral therapeutic strategy because several essential steps in the RVFV replication cycle involve N binding to viral RNA. The overall goals of our research are to better understand how RVFV N protein interacts with RNA, to develop a high-throughput drug screening assay for identification of compounds …
The Identity Of Upholding Indigenous Lifeways, Sean Falcon Chandler
The Identity Of Upholding Indigenous Lifeways, Sean Falcon Chandler
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This qualitative study examined the role of Native Lifeways in tribal colleges as perceived by their presidents and other influential leaders on the campuses of three tribal colleges. Tribal colleges were founded in part to support and promote Native Lifeways, as demonstrated within their respective mission statements. Given the fact that TCUs are at the forefront of the defense of Native Lifeways, they continue to be in a state of endangerment as a result of the history of U.S. Indian Policy.
Data was acquired from the face-to-face interviews of 15 leaders within the three tribal colleges located in northwest United …
Consequences Of Color Vision Variation On Performance And Fitness In Capuchin Monkeys, Andrea Theresa Green
Consequences Of Color Vision Variation On Performance And Fitness In Capuchin Monkeys, Andrea Theresa Green
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The origin and maintenance of variation in natural populations are central to the study of evolution. When alternative alleles have obvious effects on phenotype and are common in a population, the maintenance of these alleles requires some form of balancing selection. Understanding how selection maintains multiple phenotypes in a population requires integration of genetic analyses of phenotypic differences with field studies on the performance consequences of these differences within an ecological context.
The color vision polymorphism characterizing most diurnal platyrrhine and strepsirrhine primates provides an excellent opportunity to investigate the maintenance of variation in natural populations. The polymorphism leads to …
Demographic And Epidemiological Changes On The Flathead Reservation 1887-1935, Christina Joy Heiner
Demographic And Epidemiological Changes On The Flathead Reservation 1887-1935, Christina Joy Heiner
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This dissertation examines the patterns of health among the Salish, Pend d’Oreille, and Kootenai tribes living on the Flathead Reservation in the late 19th and early 20th century. Previous research on early Native American demographic and epidemiological patterns has essentially focused on patterns following European contact to the pre-reservation era, ignoring that Native populations continued to struggle with ill-health and disease under the control of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. This research found while large infectious disease epidemics did not occur after the 1900s, infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and pneumonia were the leading causes of death for all ages …

This PhD dissertation focuses on several interrelated archaeological problems in Northwestern Plains and Intermountain prehistory. The dissertation is comprised of three articles that have been either accepted for publication in peer-reviewed regional or international archaeological journals or are in the process of being reviewed for publication. The articles focus on the following subjects: 1) radiocarbon dating and analysis of Late Prehistoric period perishable items from Pictograph and Ghost Caves in south-central Montana; 2) radiocarbon dating of lower cultural levels in Pictograph Cave to assess the accuracy of the chronology established by William Mulloy in 1958; and 3) an analysis of …
The Effects Of The Fur Trade On Aboriginal Households In The Middle Fraser Region Of British Columbia, Lisa Michelle Smith
The Effects Of The Fur Trade On Aboriginal Households In The Middle Fraser Region Of British Columbia, Lisa Michelle Smith
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Ethnographic literature of First Nations groups in the Middle Fraser region of British Columbia describe communities that were hierarchically organized with elite, commoner, and slave classes, underwritten by elite ownership of keystone resources, and perpetuated by competitive feasting events used to maintain debt relations, unequal distribution of food and raw materials, and possibly elite control over trade networks. Narratives of the ethnographic present are commonly utilized to describe cultural patterns of the deeper past, despite the fact that we lack knowledge of the effects of European colonialism and the role it may have had in shaping the socioeconomic and political …

Cellular Regulation Of Extension And Retraction Of Pseudopod-Like Blebs Produced By Nanosecond Pulsed Electric Field, Mikhail A. Rassokhin, Andrei G. Pakhomov
Cellular Regulation Of Extension And Retraction Of Pseudopod-Like Blebs Produced By Nanosecond Pulsed Electric Field, Mikhail A. Rassokhin, Andrei G. Pakhomov
Bioelectrics Publications
Recently we described a new phenomenon of anodotropic pseudopod-like blebbing in U937 cells exposed to nanosecond pulsed electric field (nsPEF). In Ca2+ -free buffer such exposure initiates formation of pseudopod-like blebs (PLBs), protrusive cylindrical cell extensions that are distinct from apoptotic and necrotic blebs. PLBs nucleate predominantly on anode-facing cell pole and extend toward anode during nsPEF exposure. Bleb extension depends on actin polymerization and availability of actin monomers. Inhibition of intracellular Ca2+ , cell contractility, and RhoA produced no effect on PLB initiation. Meanwhile, inhibition of WASP by wiskostatin causes dose-dependent suppression of PLB growth. Soon after …

Cancellation Of Cellular Responses To Nanoelectroporation By Reversing The Stimulus Polarity, Andrei G. Pakhomov, Iurii Semenov, Shu Xiao, Olga N. Pakhomova, Betsy Gregory, Karl H. Schoenbach
Bioelectrics Publications
Nanoelectroporation of biomembranes is an effect of high-voltage, nanosecond-duration electric pulses (nsEP). It occurs both in the plasma membrane and inside the cell, and nanoporated membranes are distinguished by ion-selective and potential-sensitive permeability. Here we report a novel phenomenon of bioeffects cancellation that puts nsEP cardinally apart from the conventional electroporation and electrostimulation by milli- and microsecond pulses. We compared the effects of 60- and 300-ns monopolar, nearly rectangular nsEP on intracellular Ca2+mobilization and cell survival with those of bipolar 60 + 60 and 300 + 300 ns pulses. For diverse endpoints, exposure conditions, pulse numbers (1-60), and …

Calcium-Mediated Pore Expansion And Cell Death Following Nanoelectroporation, Olga N. Pakhomova, Betsy Gregory, Iurii Semenov, Andrei G. Pakhomov
Bioelectrics Publications
Opening of long-lived pores in the cell membrane is the principal primary effect of intense, nanosecond pulsed electric field (nsPEF). Here we demonstrate that the evolution of pores, cell survival, the time and the mode of cell death (necrotic or apoptotic) are determined by the level of external Ca2+ after nsPEF. We also introduce a novel, minimally disruptive technique for nsEP exposure of adherent cells on indium tin oxide (ITO)-coated glass coverslips, which does not require cell detachment and enables fast exchanges of bath media. Increasing the Ca2+ level from the nominal 2–5 μM to 2 mM for …

Delivery Of Interleukin-15 To B16 Melanoma By Electroporation Leads To Tumor Regression And Long-Term Survival, Bernadette Marrero, Shawna Shirley, Richard Heller
Bioelectrics Publications
Electroporation (EP) is a method used to physically deliver therapeutic molecules such as plasmid DNA directly to tissues. It has been used safely and successfully in clinical studies and preclinical cancer models to deliver genes to a variety of tissues. In cancer research cytokine therapy is emerging as a promising tool that can be used to boost the host response to tumor antigens. The delivery of cytokines as recombinant proteins can result in toxicity and other adverse effects; however the delivery of cytokine genes using EP has been shown to be safe and effective. Interleukin 15 (IL-15) is a cytokine …
Structure, Substance And Spirit: Lessons In Constitutional Architecture From The Senate Reform Reference, Kate Glover
Structure, Substance And Spirit: Lessons In Constitutional Architecture From The Senate Reform Reference, Kate Glover
The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
This paper explores what we did and did not learn from the Senate Reform Reference about the role of constitutional architecture in understanding and applying our constitutional amending formulas. It first summarizes the Court’s opinion in the Reference and explains why we must be attentive to procedure when amending the constitution. It the n shows that the Court relied on traditional structural analysis to give meaning to the amending formulas, while still reflecting its commitment to constitutional text. Next, the paper contends that the internal structure of Part V of the Constitution Act, 1982 could have been of greater interpretive …

Charter Values And Administrative Justice, Lorne Sossin, Mark Friedman
The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
What would the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms have looked like if it had been designed for administrative justice? This is a question underlying this study. Ever since the Supreme Court of Canada made clear in Slaight Communications that discretionary decisions of public officials were to be subject to the Charter, and expanded the reach of the Charter to most adjudicative tribunals, the Court has wrestled with the coherence of the relationship between the Charter and administrative justice. The Court attempted to synthesize its position and chart a new path forward beyond a traditional application of the Charter to …
Charter Right Or Charter-Lite?: Administrative Discretion And The Charter, Audrey Macklin
Charter Right Or Charter-Lite?: Administrative Discretion And The Charter, Audrey Macklin
The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
The Supreme Court of Canada has vacillated in its guidance about the incorporation of the Charter into the exercise of discretion. The author contends that Doré’s attempt to synchronize proportionality analysis (derived from constitutional adjudication) with deferential reasonableness review (derived from administrative law) is unsatisfactory. The replacement of Charter “right” or “freedom” with Charter “value” obscures the recognition of rights and freedoms in play. The administrative law proportionality analysis that the Court endorses in Doré does not respect the primacy or priority of Charter rights, and curial deference toward the outcomes it produces exacerbates the dilution of rights protection. The …
Defeating A Wolf Clad As A Wolf: Formalism And Functionalism In Separation-Of-Powers Suits Against The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Lee A. Deneen
Georgia Law Review
In 2010, the Court decided Free Enterprise Fund, engaging in a substantially formalist analysis of the President's removal power. That same year, Congress authorized creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, a federal agency with significant regulatory and enforcement power over the consumer finance industry. Within three years of that legislation, two lawsuits have challenged the CFPB's structure. This Note evaluates the arguments of the CFPB's opponents against the backdrop of Free Enterprise Fund and the Roberts Court's other formalist decisions. Although one might expect complaints against the CFPB to be lodged solely in formalist terms, the CFPB's opponents have …

Right Of Possession: A Comparative Legal Analysis Of Nagpra, Jaclyn Lee Schmidt
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Repatriation attempts to reconcile opposing values regarding human skeletal remains. Repatriation has sometimes been contentious because it raises the question of which aspect of human remains is more important, cultural or scientific values. Repatriation is also an issue of power. The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) provides a procedural framework with which to negotiate power relationships between scholars, tribes, and the U.S. government. Property rights are integral to power, as the holder controls the use of and access to and interpretation of indigenous skeletal remains. Property rights concerning Native American human remains are an integral part of …
Evaluating Morphoscopic Trait Frequencies Of Southeast Asians And Pacific Islanders, Melody Dawn Ratliff
Evaluating Morphoscopic Trait Frequencies Of Southeast Asians And Pacific Islanders, Melody Dawn Ratliff
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
When assessing ancestry in a forensic context, individuals are generally classified into one of four categories: belonging to European, African, Asian, or Native American ancestry. With only these four assessments, individuals from Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands are usually phenotypically classified as Asian. While the oceanic regions of Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands will most likely have trait frequencies similar to those of mainland Asia because of their shared ancestral lineages, there is still a great deal of variability in this region that could cause these trait frequencies to differ. To address this variability, sixteen morphoscopic traits were …

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Archaeological research of Housepit 1 at the S7istken site in the Middle Fraser region of the British Columbia Plateau has been ongoing since the summer of 2010. Housepit 1 is one of eight housepits at the site, and to date it has been excavated in near entirety. This has provided a large faunal assemblage mostly comprised of stored salmon remains, and also a lithic assemblage that has proven to be a useful measure of late prehistoric lifeways from the perspective of technological organization and lithic design strategies. Housepit 1 was occupied twice between about 350-300 B.P., which is the proto-historic …

Buddhism As Caricature: China And The Legitimation Of Natural Religion In The Enlightenment, Jeffery D. Burson
Religion in the Age of Enlightenment
Europe was unusually familiar with the ancient civilizations of East Asia, but however familiar China may have seemed, European missionaries and those who utilized and subverted their accounts in the literature of the eighteenth century made sense of China through their own hermeneutical lenses. David Porter's work Ideographia: The Chinese Cipher in Early Modern Europeargues that Jesuit missionaries and Enlightenment philosophers imposed upon China their Eurocentric quest for "representational legitimacy;' which Porter defines as "the presence of an originary wellspring of meaning that gives rise to a succession of grounded signifiers in which the living image of the origin …

Under The Cape Of Religion: Herder And Shamanism In The Eighteenth Century, Vera Jakoby
Religion in the Age of Enlightenment
I f one were to undertake a genealogy of how Western Europe established a concept of otherness, the eighteenth century would be one of the most rewarding "information hubs" for such a study. Ethnography, ethnology, anthropology, and other new knowledge fields exploring global populations and environs were founded in this century, analyzing and systematizing the waves of travel reports that had been flooding Europe since the time of Columbus and Vasco da Gama. Stories and images of paradisiacal and terrorizing spaces, peculiar humans, and wondrous animals and plants had taken root in the Western imagination beginning in the sixteenth century. …
"Conversing With Animal Forms Of Wisdom'': Blake's Visions Of Eternity In Context, Judith C. Mueller
"Conversing With Animal Forms Of Wisdom'': Blake's Visions Of Eternity In Context, Judith C. Mueller
Religion in the Age of Enlightenment
Had anyone been paying attention, the endings of Blake's major prophecies-Milton, The Four Zoas, and Jerusalem-might have either puzzled or appalled Blake's Christian contemporaries. Each ends in a movement out of the fractured, fallen state and, in the case of The Four Zoas and Jerusalem, into the promised, eternal paradise, if only for a brief glimpse. Blake's visions of the restored or "heavenly" state respond to common eighteenth-century Christian depictions of the afterlife, most of which he treats with suspicion, even disdain. Scholars have shown how conceptions of heaven shift during the period; theocentric eternities of …
