The Effects Of The Lubanga Case On Understanding And Preventing Child Soldiering, Mark A. Drumbl Jan 2014

The Effects Of The Lubanga Case On Understanding And Preventing Child Soldiering, Mark A. Drumbl

Scholarly Articles

On March 14, 2012, a trial chamber of the International Criminal Court (ICC) convicted Thomas Lubanga Dyilo, a rebel leader from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, for child-soldier-related crimes. Some months later, Lubanga was sentenced to a prison term of fourteen years. On August 7, 2012, an ICC trial chamber issued its decision regarding the principles and procedures to be applied to reparations in the Lubanga case. This Article unpacks the relationships between the Lubanga proceedings and how the international community conceptualizes, and strives to prevent, child soldiering. This Article contends that the Lubanga proceedings reinforce, and incubate, a …

Developing The Law Of The River: The Integration Of Law And Policy Into Hydrologic And Socio-Economic Modeling Efforts In The Willamette River Basin, Adell Louise Amos Jan 2014

Developing The Law Of The River: The Integration Of Law And Policy Into Hydrologic And Socio-Economic Modeling Efforts In The Willamette River Basin, Adell Louise Amos

Publications

A legal and policy infrastructure -- referred to as a "law of the river" -- exists for every river basin in the U.S. an can be as important as natural processes in terms of managing the future of the resource. Because of the way that water law and policy have evolved in the U.S., this infrastructure involves a matrix of state and federal law that governs the choices that policymakers, end users, and agencies make. This "law of the river" provides the context in which decisions are made and not made. It also draws the boundaries within which decision makers …

The Foraging Areas Of Attine Ants At The Firestone Reserve, Costa Rica, Elana A. Goldstein Jan 2014

The Foraging Areas Of Attine Ants At The Firestone Reserve, Costa Rica, Elana A. Goldstein

Scripps Senior Theses

In tropical forest systems, attine ants are the dominant herbivores. They construct large nest structures that include foraging trails that extend to multiple plant sources throughout the forest. These foraging areas vary from nest to nest and they are highly dynamic over time and season changes. It was expected that characteristics of both the nest structure and the surrounding environment would affect the size of nest foraging areas. In this study, COMPASS survey software and ArcGIS were used to map the foraging trails and calculate the foraging areas of 12 attine ant nests located on the Firestone Reserve, over the …

A Negative Effect Of A Pathogen On Its Vector? A Plant Pathogen Increases The Vulnerability Of Its Vector To Attack By Natural Enemies, Camila F. De Oliveira, Elizabeth Y. Long, Deborah L. Finke Jan 2014

A Negative Effect Of A Pathogen On Its Vector? A Plant Pathogen Increases The Vulnerability Of Its Vector To Attack By Natural Enemies, Camila F. De Oliveira, Elizabeth Y. Long, Deborah L. Finke

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Plant pathogens that are dependent on arthropod vectors for transmission from host to host may enhance their own success by promoting vector survival and/or performance. The effect of pathogens on vectors may be direct or indirect, with indirect effects mediated by increases in host quality or reductions in the vulnerability of vectors to natural enemies. We investigated whether the bird cherry-oat aphid Rhopalosiphum padi, a vector of cereal yellow dwarf virus (CYDV) in wheat, experiences a reduction in rates of attack by the parasitoid wasp Aphidius colemani when actively harboring the plant pathogen. We manipulated the vector status of aphids …

Emotional Bond Between The Creator And The Avatar: Changes In Behavioral Intentions To Engage In Alcohol-Related Traffic Risk Behaviors, Hokyung Kim Jan 2014

Emotional Bond Between The Creator And The Avatar: Changes In Behavioral Intentions To Engage In Alcohol-Related Traffic Risk Behaviors, Hokyung Kim

Theses and Dissertations

The present study examines the joint impact of relationship with one's avatar and negative consequences to the avatar on changing behavioral intentions (CBI) in terms of alcohol-impaired driving. Avatars are users' visual self-representation in a virtual world, and play a major role to build the users' digital identity. One hundred eleven participants volunteered to participate in several experimental conditions where the degree of choice of avatar features and the degree of active control of the avatar were manipulated in Second Life, an immersive 3D virtual environment. Participants who were allowed to customize their avatar viewed their avatar more similar and …

Not Just Anna Nicole Smith: Cleavage In Bankruptcy, David G. Epstein Jan 2014

Not Just Anna Nicole Smith: Cleavage In Bankruptcy, David G. Epstein

Law Faculty Publications

This is an essay about the unwarranted erosion of two basic bankruptcy principles:the cleavage effect of a debtor's filing of a bankruptcy petition and the equality of treatment of prepetition unsecured claims. These are two of the most fundamental bankruptcy concepts. First courts and then Congress have fashioned rules favoring the prepetition unsecured claims of vendors and lessors that are inconsistent with these concepts. We explore the origins of such favored treatment, question the commonly offered policy justifications, and argue that the prepetition unsecured claims of vendors and lessors generally should be afforded the same treatment in bankruptcy as other …

Review Of After Darwin: Animals, Emotions, And The Mind, Angelique Richardson Jan 2014

Review Of After Darwin: Animals, Emotions, And The Mind, Angelique Richardson

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

This extremely interesting and well organized collection of 11 original essays and an 'Afterword' is not greatly concerned with George Eliot, although it would seem every major Victorian concern somehow ends by involving her. As a study that aims at what its title indicates, it includes George Eliot and G. H. Lewes as direct subjects, hut only in one essay, Angelique Richardson's 'George Eliot, G. H. Lewes, and Darwin: Animals, Emotions, and Morals'. Although, she concedes, both 'maintained human distinction in their writing' (p. 137), George Eliot felt and expressed through anthropomorphism, a real kinship with animals. With Lewes (whose …

Politics And Pastoral In Silas Marner, Barbara Hardy Jan 2014

Politics And Pastoral In Silas Marner, Barbara Hardy

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

When eighteen-year-old sumameless Eppie stands by Silas Mamer and against Godfrey Cass she joins a line of subversive children in Victorian fiction. Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre speaks out against her aunt; Dickens's Oliver Twist asks for more gruel; his Paul Dombey asks the capitalist father, 'What is money after all?' One child rebels against adult power; one against institutional power; one against the cash nexus. The children are all economic dependants but there is no emphasis on class. Oliver behaves like a little gentleman; Paul is a little gentleman; Jane tells Brocklehurst she would not like to be poor, and …

Against Teleology In An Honors Great Books Curriculum, Sarah Harlan-Haughey Jan 2014

Against Teleology In An Honors Great Books Curriculum, Sarah Harlan-Haughey

Honors in Practice Online Archive

Chronologically presented courses that span centuries often catalyze unwitting buy-in to unexamined narratives of progress. While useful for helping students make connections between the human past, present, and future, Great Books honors curricula like the one used at the University of Maine have a few inherent problems that require careful navigation. Both students and faculty tend to discard—or misinterpret—the values, cultural products, and successes of older cultures in favor of newer ones. Instead of valuing the uniqueness of a foreign place and time, we often emphasize transformation for the sake of narrative coherence in a program that needs focus to …

Sea Lions And Honors Students: More In Common Than You May Think, Kristy L. Lindememann-Biolsi Jan 2014

Sea Lions And Honors Students: More In Common Than You May Think, Kristy L. Lindememann-Biolsi

Honors in Practice Online Archive

The ability to transfer knowledge across contexts, as from course to course or from school to the “real-world,” is important to both students and educators. Without this transfer, students cannot apply information learned in the classroom. Even though we all know the importance of transfer of knowledge, we can do more to ensure that it takes place. While transfer of information between contexts is a requirement in animal training, we do not always hold ourselves and our students to this same standard. We tend to assume that students, especially honors students, come into our classroom with the metacognitive skills that …

Honors in Practice Online Archive

All of us need heroes. Throughout my thirty years in honors, two of my heroes have been Sam Schuman and Ted Estess, both of whom not just incorporate but embody the highest values of honors culture in the way that Gary Cooper embodied the Old West. Both are beautiful writers, accomplished scholars, dedicated teachers, generous colleagues, and—without making a fuss about it—indispensable exemplars and mentors for at least two generations of honors directors and faculty. Opening with contributions from both of them makes this a special volume of Honors in Practice.

History, External Influence And Political Volatility In The Central African Republic (Car), Henry Kam Kah Jan 2014

History, External Influence And Political Volatility In The Central African Republic (Car), Henry Kam Kah

Journal for the Advancement of Developing Economies

This paper examines the complex involvement of neighbours and other states in the leadership or political crisis in the CAR through a content analysis. It further discusses the repercussions of this on the unity and leadership of the country. The CAR has, for a long time, been embroiled in a crisis that has impeded the unity of the country. It is a failed state in Africa to say the least, and the involvement of neighbouring and other states in the crisis in one way or the other has compounded the multifarious problems of this country. Some of these states have …

Generative Intersections: Supporting Honors Through College Composition, Heather C. Camp

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

Given the current emphasis on acceleration toward graduation, common sense might seem to argue against First-Year Composition (FYC) as a compelling course offering in an honors curriculum. Many honors students enter college with significant college credit: Advanced Placement and dual enrollment programs allow students to fulfill their first-year college writing requirement and other lower-division requirements before leaving high school. These programs are flourishing. The number of students taking an AP exam in high school has nearly doubled in ten years, with over a million high school graduates taking an AP exam in 2013. That year, 58% of English Language and …

Exploring Public Middle School English Language Learner Teachers' Grammar Teaching: An Instrumental Case Study, Sevda Budak Jan 2014

Exploring Public Middle School English Language Learner Teachers' Grammar Teaching: An Instrumental Case Study, Sevda Budak

The Nebraska Educator: A Student-Led Journal

We know little about how teachers teach grammar in the public school context. This qualitative study explores public middle school teachers’ grammar instruction in today’s diverse classrooms. An instrumental case study design was employed to provide a broad description of two ELL middle school teachers’ grammar teaching. Analysis of the multiple data sources revealed how ELL teachers orchestrated grammar teaching, which is explored in themes within each case. Based on the findings that emerged in cross-case analysis, similarities and differences between two cases are also discussed. The particularities of these two in-service teachers’ grammar teaching provide insight to all language-teaching …

Sex, Science, And The Age Of Anxiety, Linda C. Fentiman Jan 2014

Sex, Science, And The Age Of Anxiety, Linda C. Fentiman

Nebraska Law Review

This Article examines the question of whether the HPV vaccine should be mandated (for girls and/or boys) in the context of declining rates of childhood immunization and the potential threat to public health that this decline poses.20 The Article addresses two interconnected legal issues: first, whether mandating vaccines to prevent the spread of disease is constitutional under substantive due process and equal protection principles, and second, whether parents should be permitted to “opt out” of mandatory vaccination on their children’s behalf, either for all vaccines or those which prevent particular diseases. The Article addresses these issues in the context of …

The fauna of the small carrion beetles and round fungus beetles (Leiodidae) of the oceanic islands of the West Indies is reviewed with 11 genera and 81 species recorded. Keys to adults of all genera and species, descriptions, and figures are provided to aid in identification. All species are endemic to the islands of the West Indies. Most species are endemic to a single island, but some species in the Lesser Antilles occur on more than one island. It is certain that more species remain to be discovered, especially on larger and less explored islands.

Two new genera are described: …
