Ritual And Healing: Explorations Of The Placebo Phenomenon And Peruvian Curanderismo In Iquitos, Peru, Victoria Elizabeth Jara Jan 2014

Ritual And Healing: Explorations Of The Placebo Phenomenon And Peruvian Curanderismo In Iquitos, Peru, Victoria Elizabeth Jara

Theses & ETDs

Placebo effects can be used to explain the effectiveness of ritual healing. The evidence supporting the effectiveness of rituals and positive affective responses are due to neurobiological studies on placebo effects that point to the activation of the descending opioid and dopaminergic neural systems. Using Kaptchuk’s (2011) proposal of a ritual approach to understand the placebo phenomenon, I argue that placebo ritual theory can help explain how language, culture and metaphor affect physiological processes. Research for this thesis took place in Iquitos, Peru—the largest city in the Peruvian Amazon. Qualitative research was performed using semi-structured interviews and participant-observations. Healers and …

The study examines the heritage preservation challenges facing the state of Florida and considers the history of preservation in the United States with suggestions on how to model a successful preservation process, based on two years of engagement with Warm Mineral Springs. This thesis uses the literature associated with preservation legislation, economic and social values of heritage within a community, and heritage tourism; examines the multiple layers of history at Warm Mineral Springs from archaeology, ecology, architecture, …

Mining For Emotions: An Investigation Into Empathy And Immersion In Video Games, Jonathan Weinberg Jan 2014

Mining For Emotions: An Investigation Into Empathy And Immersion In Video Games, Jonathan Weinberg

Theses & ETDs

As video games become more prevalent in society, it becomes necessary to research the effects video games may have on players. While prior research has shown that video games can be used to increase empathy, little research has been done on the effects of properties of video games. Immersion, the psychological experience of engaging with a videogame, is one of the more desirable aspects a game can have; that is, more immersive games are generally found to be more entertaining. The purpose of this study was to examine whether a game with higher immersion provokes a more empathetic response than …

Seeing The Light: Spirituality Embodied, Jessie Leasure Jan 2014

Seeing The Light: Spirituality Embodied, Jessie Leasure

Theses & ETDs

Renaissance and Medieval religion viewed the human figure primarily as a vessel for the soul. As a result, art that incorporated the human figure, particularly religious painting, often contained symbolism that alluded to the intangible essence of the soul. This symbolism included using light and color as an expression of the divine. Certain colors, such as red, yellow (gold), and blue, were presented in close proximity to divine figures and spaces as haloes, etc, and this proximity indicates their perceived connection to the divine. Light was also seen as expressive of divinity; in examples like Geertgen tot Sint Jans's Night …

Walt’S Exceptional Empire: Fordism, Hegemony, And Spectacle At Disney, Thayer Z. Warne Jan 2014

Walt’S Exceptional Empire: Fordism, Hegemony, And Spectacle At Disney, Thayer Z. Warne

Theses & ETDs

By addressing the legacy of Walt Disney and examining his corporation’s role in the world today, this thesis locates The Walt Disney Company within the narrative of American exceptionalism. Using a variety of both primary and secondary sources as part of its analysis—and dedicating significant attention to the Disney parks’ spatial layout— this thesis evaluates the connection between Disney’s own rendering of exceptionalism and its position as a multinational corporation that operates in a consumption-driven society. In doing so, this thesis touches upon the development of Disney in a post-Fordist economy, focusing on the company’s use of spectacle to promote …

Mental Toughness, Personality, And Benefit Finding, Maiah Taylor Jan 2014

Mental Toughness, Personality, And Benefit Finding, Maiah Taylor

Theses & ETDs

Over the past decades, mental toughness research has become more prevalent but has yet to include non-athletes. The present study was intended to evaluate mental toughness, personality, and benefit finding abilities in non-athletes. The sample consisted of 86 participants, 16 male, 58 female, 5 non-binary, and 7 who did not respond ranging in age from 18 to 69 years (M=22). The findings are discussed in the context of how mental toughness associated with personality, benefit finding and gender. A series of correlations and t-tests were conducted resulting in significant findings regarding the personality profile of those considered to be mentally …

Gardens As Educational Tools In Urban Public Schools, Michelle Diane Wheat Jan 2014

Gardens As Educational Tools In Urban Public Schools, Michelle Diane Wheat

Theses & ETDs

Urban public school education has become increasingly decontextualized from the natural world over time. This causes a division within students that impacts how they learn, what they learn, and their mental health. Children's knowledge is increasingly devoid of environmental awareness. In addition ADHD, depression, and obesity have been linked to this separation. These problems are exacerbated by a culture of standardized tests motivated by financial concerns, and the gearing of education toward career preparation. Children learn to fear nature and reap none of the benefits that immersion in nature can foster. School gardens, especially in urban areas, can provide a …

Christ’S Blood And The Side Wound As Fountain, Body, Mouth, And Door: Late Medieval Devotional Imagery In British Library Ms Egerton 1821, Margaret Vincent Jan 2014

Christ’S Blood And The Side Wound As Fountain, Body, Mouth, And Door: Late Medieval Devotional Imagery In British Library Ms Egerton 1821, Margaret Vincent

Theses & ETDs

British Library MS Egerton 1821 is a rare example of late medieval devotion. It opens with three black folios, each dotted with large globules of red paint. Eight later folios are colored carmine and covered in small, relief-like bleeding wounds. Four woodcuts, depicting the Madonna lactans, the arma Christi, the Man of Sorrows, and the Five Holy Wounds, have been affixed to the manuscript’s vellum folios. For this thesis, I explore Egerton 1821’s bleeding pages and integrated woodcuts, using them to open a discussion of the devotion to Christ’s abstracted, disembodied side wound. I interpret this isolated wound as baptismal …

The Effects Of Chronic Pain On Neurophysiology And Long Term Potentiation, Catherine Martini Jan 2014

The Effects Of Chronic Pain On Neurophysiology And Long Term Potentiation, Catherine Martini

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the effects of chronic pain on neurophysiology and long term potentiation (LTP). In the first part, the thesis reviews the path of nociceptive signaling as well as the major pain processing centers within the brain. The second part delves into an overview of synaptic plasticity (i.e. LTP) and central sensitization including the roles of receptors, glial cells, inflammatory cytokines, and the ERK/MAPK pathway. The third part attends to the effects of chronic pain on memory and attention as well as the possible effects of current drug treatments on both. The final part examines the physical effect of …

The Mechanisms By Which Deep Brain Stimulation Alleviates Parkinson’S Disease Symptoms, Brendan Clark Jan 2014

The Mechanisms By Which Deep Brain Stimulation Alleviates Parkinson’S Disease Symptoms, Brendan Clark

Theses & ETDs

One of the most promising methods of alleviating the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease today is a therapy known as deep brain stimulation. This therapy is often considered the best option when patients are no longer responding well to dopaminergic medication. Deep brain stimulation is usually effective in reducing various motor symptoms, but scientists are still unsure about the fine details of the neurobiological mechanisms that lead to these benefits. Deep brain stimulation has been tested in several different brain sites, and the resulting neurobiological modifications have been compared. Scientists are still trying to understand why certain frequencies of stimulation are …

Representations Of Agency And Communion In Narratives About The Self Versus Gendered Others, Taylor S. Parker Jan 2014

Representations Of Agency And Communion In Narratives About The Self Versus Gendered Others, Taylor S. Parker

Theses & ETDs

This study examined differences in children’s representations of agency (exerting influence to achieve desired outcomes) and communion (feelings of social belongingness) in narratives about the self versus gendered others. These themes were coded for in four different narratives (one about the self, as well as one each about a masculine, feminine, and androgynous puppet) generated by 20 children. Though data were not analyzed directly between gender conditions, differences in correlational patterns between girls and boys for themes and age emerged. For girls, descriptions of dynamic physical activity decreased with age in importance as well as propensity, and descriptions of physical …

The Vestibular Contribution To The Head Direction Signal And Navigation, Ryan M. Yoder, J.S. Taube Jan 2014

The Vestibular Contribution To The Head Direction Signal And Navigation, Ryan M. Yoder, J.S. Taube

Psychology

Spatial learning and navigation depend on neural representations of location and direction within the environment. These representations, encoded by place cells and head direction (HD) cells, respectively, are dominantly controlled by visual cues, but require input from the vestibular system. Vestibular signals play an important role in forming spatial representations in both visual and non-visual environments, but the details of this vestibular contribution are not fully understood. Here, we review the role of the vestibular system in generating various spatial signals in rodents, focusing primarily on HD cells. We also examine the vestibular system's role in navigation and the possible …

Benzyl Isothiocyanate As An Adjuvant Chemotherapy Option For Head And Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Mary Allison Wolf Jan 2014

Benzyl Isothiocyanate As An Adjuvant Chemotherapy Option For Head And Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Mary Allison Wolf

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Isothiocyanates (ITCs) are natural phytochemicals produced by cruciferous vegetables. Recent evidence supports that, in addition to cancer prevention, ITCs can use various mechanisms to target malignant cells. Current therapies for cancer often provoke detrimental side effects, however clinical evidence supports that ITCs have little to no side effects in patients. Consequently, ITCs may be a promising treatment option for cancer patients, especially patients suffering from head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC).

Despite recent improvements in cancer treatment, overall survival of advanced HNSCC has not improved in the past three decades. Metastasis and chemoresistance represent two detrimental events that greatly …

Requiring Pollutant Discharge Permits For Pesticide Applications That Deposit Residues In Surface Waters, Terence J. Centner, Nicholas Eberhart Jan 2014

Requiring Pollutant Discharge Permits For Pesticide Applications That Deposit Residues In Surface Waters, Terence J. Centner, Nicholas Eberhart

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Agricultural producers and public health authorities apply pesticides to control pests that damage crops and carry diseases. Due to the toxic nature of most pesticides, they are regulated by governments. Regulatory provisions require pesticides to be registered and restrictions operate to safeguard human health and the environment. Yet pesticides used near surface waters pose dangers to non-target species and drinking water supplies leading some governments to regulate discharges of pesticides under pollution discharge permits. The dual registration and discharge permitting provisions are burdensome. In the United States, agricultural interest groups are advancing new legislation that would exempt pesticide residues from …

Coast Salish Spinning: Looking For Twist, Finding Change, Liz Hammond-Kaarremaa Jan 2014

Coast Salish Spinning: Looking For Twist, Finding Change, Liz Hammond-Kaarremaa

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Coast Salish textiles from the Pacific Northwest (northwest Washington state and southwest British Columbia) are relatively rare and unknown yet are masterpieces of sophisticated weaving and spinning techniques. Coast Salish blankets and robes, and the tools used to make them, have been the subjects of a few seminal works (Gustafson 1980; Loughran-Delahunt 1996; Marr 1979; Vanderburg 1953), but other than the occasional recording of the direction of twist, the spinning characteristics of the yarn itself have not been the focus of research. This gap is curious, given the uniqueness of Coast Salish spinning tools, the corresponding techniques, and the fibres …

Dressing The Leader, Dressing The Ancestor: The Longue Durée In The South Central Andes, Ann H. Peters Jan 2014

Dressing The Leader, Dressing The Ancestor: The Longue Durée In The South Central Andes, Ann H. Peters

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

The preservation and adornment of the dead in the South Central Andes can be traced over some twelve thousand years. The potential for preservation of human bodies and fine textiles in desert sands and high altitude caves contributed to a continuing social and political role of the dead in the lives of the living. Colonial period documents describe well-dressed mortuary bundles that participated in public ritual and could be cited as proof of heritage and validation of social leadership. However, the nature of social and political ancestry and its relationship to power change over time with the development of large-scale …
