Universal Design For Learning At The Toledo Museum Of Art: Mobile Learning Guide, Katie Hatch Jan 2014

Universal Design For Learning At The Toledo Museum Of Art: Mobile Learning Guide, Katie Hatch

Master of Education in Instructional Design and Technology Plan II Graduate Projects

The purpose of this project was to create a mobile learning guide based on Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles that would help the casual visitor understand and engage with objects or exhibits located in the Toledo Museum of Art’s Classic Court. Adhering to the UDL principles (i.e., providing multiple means of representation, action and expression, and engagement), the guide showcased four artifacts in the gallery. The contents of the mobile learning guide included an orientation to the guide and the four artifacts highlighted within, an introduction to visual literacy, and a chapter for each artifact, containing information organized thematically. …

Botanists In The Canyonlands Of The Colorado Plateau – 1950–1983 & Prior, Stanley L. Welsh, Glen Moore Jan 2014

Botanists In The Canyonlands Of The Colorado Plateau – 1950–1983 & Prior, Stanley L. Welsh, Glen Moore

Books by Faculty of the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum

Abstract

This paper provides an overview of botanical investigations in southeastern Utah, but is not so-restricted geographically. It grew out of the discovery of decades-old manuscripts on the flora of what became Canyonlands National Park in 1964, but from those typescript copies the coverage grew outward geographically and backward in time to the earliest inhabitants of what is today known as the Four Corners Region of the American Southwest. Reviewed is the account of utilization of the region and its natural resources by aboriginal inhabitants who were familiar with all of it. That early, and to an extent, continuous occupation …

Ellagic Acid Inhibits Adipocyte Differentiation Through Coactivator-Associated Arginine Methyltransferase 1-Mediated Chromatin Modification, Inhae Kang, Meshail Okla, Soonkyu Chung Jan 2014

Ellagic Acid Inhibits Adipocyte Differentiation Through Coactivator-Associated Arginine Methyltransferase 1-Mediated Chromatin Modification, Inhae Kang, Meshail Okla, Soonkyu Chung

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Chromatin remodeling is a key mechanism in adipocyte differentiation. However, it is unknown whether dietary polyphenols are epigenetic effectors for adiposity control. Ellagic acid (EA) is a naturally occurring polyphenol in numerous fruits and vegetables. Recently, EA-containing foods have been reported to reduce adiposity. In the present study, we sought to determine whether EA inhibits adipogenesis by modifying chromatin remodeling in human adipogenic stem cells (hASCs). qPCR microarray of chromatin modification enzymes revealed that 10 μmol/L of EA significantly inhibits histone deacetylase (HDAC)9 downregulation. In addition, EA was associated with up-regulation of HDAC activity and a marked reduction of histone …

Sin Taxes And Sindustry: Revenue, Paternalism, And Political Interest, Adam J. Hoffer, William F. Shughart Ii, Michael D. Thomas Jan 2014

Sin Taxes And Sindustry: Revenue, Paternalism, And Political Interest, Adam J. Hoffer, William F. Shughart Ii, Michael D. Thomas

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

Revenue shortfalls associated with the Great Recession and the slow recovery that followed have placed the budgets of many U.S. state and local governments under heavy stress. In the past several years, lingering economic troubles have eroded governmental tax bases while voters have remained strongly resistant to proposals for cutting public spending or raising taxes on income, property, or other broad bases. This has left many states searching for new revenue sources. Particularly attractive targets for "revenue enhancement" are goods that policymakes deem to be "sinful" or misguided because they are bad for the user or generate negative externalities or …

A Simple Treatment Of The Liquidity Trap For Intermediate Macroeconomics Courses, Sebastien Buttet, Udayan Roy Jan 2014

A Simple Treatment Of The Liquidity Trap For Intermediate Macroeconomics Courses, Sebastien Buttet, Udayan Roy

Publications and Research

Several leading undergraduate intermediate macroeconomics textbooks now include a simple reduced-form New Keynesian model of short-run dynamics (alongside the IS-LM model). Unfortunately, there is no accompanying description of how the zero lower bound on nominal interest rates affects the model. In this article, the authors show how the aforementioned model can easily be modified to teach undergraduate students about the significance of the zero lower bound for economic performance and policy. This acquires additional significance because economies such as the United States and Japan have been close to the zero lower bound since 2008 and 1995, respectively. The authors show …

Antennal Lobe Representations Are Optimized When Olfactory Stimuli Are Periodically Structured To Simulate Natural Wing Beat Effects, Benjamin Houot, Rex Burkland, Shreejoy Tripathy, Kevin C. Daly Jan 2014

Antennal Lobe Representations Are Optimized When Olfactory Stimuli Are Periodically Structured To Simulate Natural Wing Beat Effects, Benjamin Houot, Rex Burkland, Shreejoy Tripathy, Kevin C. Daly

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Animals use behaviors to actively sample the environment across a broad spectrum of sensory domains. These behaviors discretize the sensory experience into unique spatiotemporal moments, minimize sensory adaptation, and enhance perception. In olfaction, behaviors such as sniffing, antennal flicking, and wing beating all act to periodically expose olfactory epithelium. In mammals, it is thought that sniffing enhances neural representations; however, the effects of insect wing beating on representations remain unknown. To determine how well the antennal lobe (AL) produces odor dependent representations when wing beating effects are simulated, we used extracellular methods to record neural units and local field potentials …

A Socio-Marketing Analysis Of The Concept Of Cute And Its Consumer Culture Implications, Elad Granot, Thomas Brashear Alejandro, La Toya M. Russell Jan 2014

A Socio-Marketing Analysis Of The Concept Of Cute And Its Consumer Culture Implications, Elad Granot, Thomas Brashear Alejandro, La Toya M. Russell

Business Faculty Publications

Cute has become the favored language of (the predominantly female) popular consumer culture. This paper examines the roots of “cute” and its evolution with reference to its relevance to marketers. We follow the cultural appropriation of Japan’s “Kawaii” by the Western “cute”, and introduce a social, marketing-oriented description and analysis of the concept. We present its socio-cultural, experiential, symbolic, and ideological relevance to consumption in general, and to consumer culture theory in particular. This examination steers clear of scientific generalizations prevalent in consumer behavior research and aims, instead, to illuminate the cultural dimensions of the consumption cycle, and allow a …

Detection Probability Of Least Tern And Piping Plover Chicks In A Large River System, Erin A. Roche, Terry L. Shaffer, Michael J. Anteau, Mark H. Sherfy, Jennifer H. Stucker, Mark T. Wiltermuth, Colin M. Dovichin Jan 2014

Detection Probability Of Least Tern And Piping Plover Chicks In A Large River System, Erin A. Roche, Terry L. Shaffer, Michael J. Anteau, Mark H. Sherfy, Jennifer H. Stucker, Mark T. Wiltermuth, Colin M. Dovichin

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Monitoring the abundance and stability of populations of conservation concern is often complicated by an inability to perfectly detect all members of the population. Mark-recapture offers a flexible framework in which one may identify factors contributing to imperfect detection, while at the same time estimating demographic parameters such as abundance or survival. We individually color-marked, recaptured, and re-sighted 1,635 federally listed interior least tern (Sternula antillarum; endangered) chicks and 1,318 piping plover (Charadrius melodus; threatened) chicks from 2006 to 2009 at 4 study areas along the Missouri River and investigated effects of observer-, subject-, and site-level …

Standing-Up To The Politics Of Comedy, Don Waisanen Jan 2014

Standing-Up To The Politics Of Comedy, Don Waisanen

Publications and Research

This study examines the discourses of the U.S.'s 10 top-earning comedians in 2009 and 2010 through systematic textual analyses. Building from two prior case studies and working toward a communicative worldview for comedy as a pervasive mode of public communication, the results indicate that there are several generic clusters emerging across these acts involving rhetorics of optimism, uncertainty, individualism, and others. Many distinctive characteristics in the comedians' messages are also noted. Through such practices, humorists advance a language with political significance-so this essay draws several connections and implications regarding comic discourses in public culture

Pitzer College Outback Preserve Restoration Project, Paul Faulstich

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

A question we keep asking ourselves in environmental analysis at Pitzer College is whether it’s possible to create modern socionatural systems that are truly sustaining; that is, that avoid the features of contemporary systems in which the human factor dominates to the detriment of the environment. Any genuinely sustainable society must honor diversity— cultural and biological—and, at Pitzer, we’re committed to forging innovative directions for a healthy future. Toward this end, students, along with faculty and staff, have initiated a program of ecological restoration in the Pitzer College Outback Preserve.

Welcome Home Ranch Rockshelter: Examinations Of Prehistoric Cultural Transitions In The Palmer Divide, Colorado, Katherine V. Mayo Jan 2014

Welcome Home Ranch Rockshelter: Examinations Of Prehistoric Cultural Transitions In The Palmer Divide, Colorado, Katherine V. Mayo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Welcome Home Ranch rockshelter is located in the Palmer Divide region of Colorado. The archaeological evidence on site suggests that this rockshelter was occupied between the Late Archaic period (c. 1000 BC – AD 150) and Early Ceramic period (c. AD 150- 1150). Excavations at Welcome Home Ranch provided a dataset of lithics, ceramics, and features with which to test ideas about prehistoric life during this transitional time frame between the Archaic stage and the Late Prehistoric stage. It is during this transitional time period, c. AD 150, that the Palmer Divide region and its prehistoric residents experienced a variable …

Intuitive Impressions: Comparing Law Enforcement And The General Population’S Perception Of Stress In Others, Lukas Klapatch Jan 2014

Intuitive Impressions: Comparing Law Enforcement And The General Population’S Perception Of Stress In Others, Lukas Klapatch

Undergraduate Review

Although much research has addressed the physiological and behavioral differences between challenged and threatened stress levels (Blascovich, 2008; Frings, et al., 2012; McEwen, 2000; Vine, et al., 2013), limited attention has been paid to the ability of an observer to read behavioral cues in others and correctly identify the type of stress the target might be feeling. The purpose of the current work was to help address this gap in the literature and to compare the accuracy of participants from two groups, the general population and those with law enforcement training, who classified targets in silent video clips as challenged …

Decay And Perversion In Jacksonian America: George Lippard’S The Quaker City, Keith Lydon Jan 2014

Decay And Perversion In Jacksonian America: George Lippard’S The Quaker City, Keith Lydon

Undergraduate Review

In the United States, the period between the termination of the 18th century and the commencement of the 19th century is characterized by the struggle to forge a national identity that was uniquely American in its independence from European influence. American writers of this period understood that the creation of an American literature distinct from the influence of Europe and shaped by the social, political, and natural environment of the United States would provide the country with the first vestiges of the autonomous cultural identity it so desperately desired. However, this work proved to be problematic, as with little financial …

Functionality And Graphical User Interface Design Patents, Michael Risch Jan 2014

Functionality And Graphical User Interface Design Patents, Michael Risch

Working Paper Series

Modern designers of graphical user interfaces, or GUIs, have obtained design patent protection for creative computer software displays, a realm previously limited to copyright. The difference in protection is important because design patents do not traditionally allow the same defenses - life fair use - associated with copyright. Apple's nearly billion dollar judgment against Samsung, which included such a GUI patent, brought this issue to the forefront.

This article answers three emerging questions:

1. Aren't GUIs something that should be protected by copyright only? Why should there be a patent? The answer is relatively simple: the law has, since 1870, …

Optimization Of A Therapeutic Electromagnetic Field (Emf) To Retard Breast Cancer Tumor Growth And Vascularity, Ivan L. Cameron, Marko S. Markov, W. Elaine Hardman Ph.D.

Biochemistry and Microbiology

Background: This study provided additional data on the effects of a therapeutic electromagnetic field (EMF) device on growth and vascularization of murine 16/C mammary adenocarcinoma cells implanted in C3H/HeJ mice.

Methods: The therapeutic EMF device generated a defined 120 Hz semi sine wave pulse signal of variable intensity. Murine 16/C mammary adenocarcinoma tumor fragments were implanted subcutaneously between the scapulae of syngeneic C3H mice. Once the tumor grew to 100 mm3, daily EMF treatments were started by placing the cage of mice within the EMF field. Treatment ranged from 10 to 20 milli-Tesla (mT) and was given for 3 to …

Orthopaedics

Postoperative SSIs are believed to occur via bacterial inoculation at the time of surgery or as a result of bacterial contamination of the wound via open pathways to the deep tissue layers.1–3 The probability of SSI is reflected by interaction of parameters that can be categorized into three major groups.2 The first group consists of factors related to the ability of bacteria to cause infection and include initial inoculation load and genetically determined virulence factors that are required for adherence, reproduction, toxin production, and bypassing host defense mechanisms. The second group involves those factors related to the defense …
