Beneficial Assessment Outcomes From Frequent Testing, Abdulrazaq Imam Jan 2014

Beneficial Assessment Outcomes From Frequent Testing, Abdulrazaq Imam

Psychology

When faced with deadlines, people tend to procrastinate. Students do this by delaying study time until examinations are so close the only option left is cramming. This procrastination scallop is a well-established behavioral phenomenon in both human and infrahuman species. Distributed practice also has been demonstrated to be superior to massed practice in the cognitive literature. Frequent testing provides opportunities for distributed practice and rehearsals that fill the gap between acquisition and the big test, creating its own mini-scallops. In sections of Introductory Psychology, Research Design, and Learning and Behavior courses, standard pre-post testing was conducted at the start and …

Evaluation Of Constitutive Iron Reductase (Atfro2) Expression On Mineral Accumulation And Distribution In Soybean (Glycine Max. L), Marta W. Vasconcelos, Thomas E. Clemente, Michael A. Grusak

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

Iron is an important micronutrient in human and plant nutrition. Adequate iron nutrition during crop production is central for assuring appropriate iron concentrations in the harvestable organs, for human food or animal feed. The whole-plant movement of iron involves several processes, including the reduction of ferric to ferrous iron at several locations throughout the plant, prior to transmembrane trafficking of ferrous iron. In this study, soybean plants that constitutively expressed the AtFRO2 iron reductase gene were analyzed for leaf iron reductase activity, as well as the effect of this transgene's expression on root, leaf, pod wall, and seed mineral concentrations. …

Second Life Librarianship And The Gendered Work Of Care In Technology, Scout Calvert Jan 2014

Second Life Librarianship And The Gendered Work Of Care In Technology, Scout Calvert

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

Of the persistent images of librarians, one in particular caricatures them as stubbornly refusing to adopt new information technologies. From outside the field of library and information science, this perception is unsurprising, given the pop-cultural image of the librarian as a joyless and sexless spinster, hell-bent on protecting books from the hands of the unwashed—the literally heathen—patron. From within the field, though, the stereotype smarts all the more because the visage of the technophobic librarian appears to be empirically unfounded, and it would seem, therefore, counterproductive for those working within the discipline to perpetuate this view. As I will argue, …

Identification Of Rna Silencing Components In Soybean And Sorghum, Xiang Liu, Tao Lu, Yongchao Dou, Bin Yu, Chi Zhang Jan 2014

Identification Of Rna Silencing Components In Soybean And Sorghum, Xiang Liu, Tao Lu, Yongchao Dou, Bin Yu, Chi Zhang

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

Background: RNA silencing is a process triggered by 21–24 small RNAs to repress gene expression. Many organisms including plants use RNA silencing to regulate development and physiology, and to maintain genome stability. Plants possess two classes of small RNAs: microRNAs (miRNAs) and small interfering RNAs (siRNAs). The frameworks of miRNA and siRNA pathways have been established in the model plant, Arabidopsis thaliana (Arabidopsis).

Results: Here we report the identification of putative genes that are required for the generation and function of miRNAs and siRNAs in soybean and sorghum, based on knowledge obtained from Arabidopsis. The gene families, including …

Prl1, An Rna-Binding Protein, Positively Regulates The Accumulation Of Mirnas And Sirnas In Arabidopsis, Shuxin Zhang, Yuhui Liu, Bin Yu

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

The evolutionary conserved WD-40 protein PRL1 plays important roles in immunity and development. Here we show that PRL1 is required for the accumulation of microRNAs (miRNAs) and small interfering RNAs (siRNAs). PRL1 positively influences the processing of miRNA primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) and double-stranded RNAs (dsRNAs). Furthermore, PRL1 interacts with the pri-miRNA processor, DCL1, and the dsRNA processors (DCL3 and DCL4). These results suggest that PRL1 may function as a general factor to promote the production of miRNAs and siRNAs. We also show that PRL1 is an RNA-binding protein and associates with pri-miRNAs in vivo. In addition, prl1 reduces pri-miRNA levels …

Methylation Protects Micrornas From An Ago1- Associated Activity That Uridylates 5′ Rna Fragments Generated By Ago1 Cleavage, Guodong Ren, Meng Xie, Shuxin Zhang, Carissa Vinovskis, Xuemei Chen, Bin Yu

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

In plants, methylation catalyzed by HEN1 (small RNA methyl transferase) prevents microRNAs (miRNAs) from degradation triggered by uridylation. Howmethylation antagonizes uridylation of miRNAs in vivo is not well understood. In addition, 5′ RNA fragments (5′ fragments) produced by miRNA-mediated RNA cleavage can be uridylated in plants and animals. However, the biological significance of this modification is unknown, and enzymes uridylating 5′ fragments remain to be identified. Here, we report that in Arabidopsis, HEN1 suppressor 1 (HESO1, a miRNA nucleotidyl transferase) uridylates 5′ fragments to trigger their degradation. We also show that Argonaute 1 (AGO1), the effector protein of miRNAs, interacts …

Small Rnas Meet Their Targets: When Methylation Defends Mirnas From Uridylation, Guodong Ren, Xuemei Chen, Bin Yu Jan 2014

Small Rnas Meet Their Targets: When Methylation Defends Mirnas From Uridylation, Guodong Ren, Xuemei Chen, Bin Yu

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

Small RNAs are incorporated into Argonaute protein-containing complexes to guide the silencing of target RNAs in both animals and plants. The abundance of endogenous small RNAs is precisely controlled at multiple levels including transcription, processing and Argonaute loading. In addition to these processes, 3' end modification of small RNAs, the topic of a research area that has rapidly evolved over the last several years, adds another layer of regulation of their abundance, diversity and function. Here, we review our recent understanding of small RNA 3' end methylation and tailing.

Cooperative Learning In Today's Bilingual Classrooms, Heath Swanson

Master of Education Program Theses

This research study examined the strategy of cooperative learning and whether or not it is an effective strategy for English Language Learners (ELLs). Previous studies have shown that by utilizing cooperative learning groups, each ELL student is enabled with an opportunity to work in a team with other students who have already gained proficiency with the language. The group dynamic of cooperative learning not only provides a supportive environment for learning new content and acquiring English language skills, but also helps to foster friendships and social development (Holt, Chips, & Wallace, 1991) This research study looked specifically at how cooperative …

Intrinsically Water-Stable Electrospun Threedimensional Ultrafine Fibrous Soy Protein Scaffolds For Soft Tissue Engineering Using Adipose Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells, Helan Xu, Shaobo Cai, Alexander Sellers, Yiqi Yang Jan 2014

Intrinsically Water-Stable Electrospun Threedimensional Ultrafine Fibrous Soy Protein Scaffolds For Soft Tissue Engineering Using Adipose Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells, Helan Xu, Shaobo Cai, Alexander Sellers, Yiqi Yang

Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design: Faculty Publications

Soy protein, the plant protein from soybean, was electrospun into intrinsically water-stable scaffolds with large volume and ultrafine fibers oriented randomly and evenly in three dimensions (3D) to simulate native extracellular matrices of soft tissues. The 3D ultrafine fibrous scaffolds from proteins could be favored in soft tissue engineering. However, protein-based biomaterials usually suffered from poor water stability, while the highly cross-linked proteins which had water stability were usually difficult to be fabricated into fibers. Soy protein was a typical protein with intrinsic water stability, attributed to its 1.2% cysteine content. Soy protein has been developed into 3D non-fibrous structures, …

Fermentable Carbohydrate Substrates Generated From Cereal And Pseudocereal Insoluble Dietary Fibers And Their In Vitro Fecal Fermentation, Lisa Marcela Lamothe Jan 2014

Fermentable Carbohydrate Substrates Generated From Cereal And Pseudocereal Insoluble Dietary Fibers And Their In Vitro Fecal Fermentation, Lisa Marcela Lamothe

Open Access Dissertations

Dietary fiber has gained an increasing attention in recent years due to the myriad of health benefits attributed to it. The majority of these arise from their fermentative properties and their effects on gut microbiota. Cereals and pseudocereals are important sources of insoluble dietary fibers that are recalcitrant to solubilization by non-chemical methods and poorly fermented. This warranted an effort to make these fibers more susceptible to microbial degradation and a resulting improved fermentability. Insoluble dietary fibers from four alternative grains, sorghum and pearl millet of African origin, and quinoa and amaranth of Andean origin, were subjected to a combination …

A Spatial Risk Assessment Of Bighorn Sheep Extirpation Bygrazing Domestic Sheep On Public Lands, Tim E. Carpenter, Victor L. Coggins, Clinton Mccarthy, Chans S. O'Brien, Joshua M. O'Brien, Timothy J. Schommer

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Bighorn sheep currently occupy just 30% of their historic distribution, and persist in popula-tions less than 5% as abundant overall as their early 19th century counterparts. Present-dayrecovery of bighorn sheep populations is in large part limited by periodic outbreaks of respi-ratory disease, which can be transmitted to bighorn sheep via contact with domestic sheepgrazing in their vicinity. In order to assess the viability of bighorn sheep populations onthe Payette National Forest (PNF) under several alternative proposals for domestic sheepgrazing, we developed a series of interlinked models. Using telemetry and habitat data,we characterized herd home ranges and foray movements of bighorn …

Gdnf Content And Nmj Morphology Are Altered In Recruited Muscles Following High-Speed And Resistance Wheel Training, Amy Morrison Gyorkos, John M. Spitsbergen

Biological Sciences Faculty and Graduate Student Research

Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) may play a role in delaying

the onset of aging and help compress morbidity by preventing motor unit

degeneration. Exercise has been shown to alter GDNF expression differently in

slow- and fast-twitch myofibers. The aim was to examine the effects of different

intensities (10, 20, ~30, and ~40 m.min-1) of wheel running on GDNF expression

and neuromuscular junction (NMJ) plasticity in slow- and fast-twitch

myofibers. Male Sprague-Dawley Rats (4 weeks old) were divided into two

sedentary control groups (CON4 week, n = 5 and CON6 week, n = 5), two

involuntary running …

What's Mine Is Mine: Taxing Pre-Contribution Gains, Rodney P. Mock, Jeffrey Tolin

Akron Tax Journal

This article conducts an analysis of the Internal Revenue Code's varied income tax treatment between depreciated property and appreciated property transferred into C corporations by shareholders in nonrecognition transactions.7 It is at the entry point of the non-recognition transaction where the lobster pot unfairly doubles up on unrecognized gains at both the corporate and shareholder level notwithstanding that unrecognized losses generally remain singular at either level. The authors call into question this long-standing practice of artificial gain duplication upon corporate entry under Subchapter C. From a tax policy perspective, such disparate treatment makes little sense - particularly when the duplicated …

Social Support And Affectionate Communication In Animal-Assisted Interventions: Toward A Typology And Rating Scheme Of Handler/Dog Messages, Amy Mccullough Jan 2014

Social Support And Affectionate Communication In Animal-Assisted Interventions: Toward A Typology And Rating Scheme Of Handler/Dog Messages, Amy Mccullough

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Animal-assisted interventions (AAIs) are a treatment modality that incorporates a trained animal into a person's healing and learning process in order to benefit the person physically, emotionally and/or socially (Delta Society, 1996). From an interactional perspective, two mechanisms that may contribute to these health benefits are social support and affection exchange. Although there is growing evidence of the health and well-being benefits of AAIs, there remains a need for scientific research to understand more precisely the communicative and behavioral components that constitute a therapeutic intervention involving an animal (Kazdin, 2010). Additionally, there is a need to develop a means of …

Men And Mustangs: From Communicative Messages Within The Wild Horse Inmate Program To A Communicative Theory Of Learning How To Teach, Kristine Larissa Reyes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to discover the communicative messages within the Wild Horse Inmate Program. This dissertation developed the communicative theory of learning how to teach, a grounded theory based on the communicative messages of the Department of Corrections' officers and Bureau of Land Manager employees who work with inmates in a western state Wild Horse Inmate Program. I approached theorizing the communicative theory of learning how to teach from the applied communication perspective that communication is the enactment and application--symbolic and physical--of communication in daily life. The applied context was the Wild Horse Inmate Program where I …

Comparative Development And Evolution Of Two Lateral Line Phenotypes In Lake Malawi Cichlids, Jacqueline F. Webb, Nathan C. Bird, Lauren Carter, Juleen Dickson

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

A comparison of the pattern and timing of development of cranial lateral line canals and canal neuromasts in three species of Lake Malawi cichlids, Labeotropheus fuelleborni and Metriaclima zebra (narrow lateral line canals), and Aulonocara baenschi (widened lateral line canals) was used to test the hypothesis that the evolution of widened canals (thought to be an adaptive phenotype in the lateral line system) from narrow canals is the result of heterochrony. Using histological analysis and scanning electron microscopy, this study has provided the first detailed and quantitative description of the development of widened lateral line canals in a teleost, and …

Predation-Associated Modulation Of Movement-Based Signals By A Bahamian Lizard, David S. Steinberg, Jonathan B. Losos, Thomas W. Schoener, David A. Spiller, Jason J. Kolbe, Manuel Leal Jan 2014

Predation-Associated Modulation Of Movement-Based Signals By A Bahamian Lizard, David S. Steinberg, Jonathan B. Losos, Thomas W. Schoener, David A. Spiller, Jason J. Kolbe, Manuel Leal

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Signaling individuals must effectively capture and hold the attention of intended conspecific receivers while limiting eavesdropping by potential predators. A possible mechanism for achieving this balance is for individuals to modulate the physical properties of their signals or to alter the proportion of time spent signaling, depending upon local levels of predation pressure. We test the hypothesis that prey can alter their visual signaling behavior to decrease conspicuousness and potentially limit predation risk via modulation of signal properties or display rate. To do so, we conducted a manipulative experiment in nature to evaluate the possible effect of predation pressure on …
