Dr. Hebert Palomino Helps Spread Baptist Faith In Communist Cuba, Office Of University Communications, Alyssa Gutierrez

Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive

Although the Cold War ended over 22 years ago, a long-standing view against religious practice is finally beginning to thaw in the island nation of Cuba, due in part to the efforts of one Gardner-Webb University professor. For several years now, Dr. Hebert Palomino has been teaching and preparing Cuban citizens to become pastors, and has taken over 10 trips in the past several years to the capitol city of Havana to offer his services and the help spread the Word. While the prevailing religion in the country before the Communist takeover was Catholicism, the nation, who became almost totally …

Gardner-Webb University Presents 2013 Advent Devotional Book, Frank Bonner, Office Of University Communications

Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive

Dear Gardner-Webb Family and Friends, It is my pleasure to bring you Christmas greetings, and to present the 2013 Advent Devotional Book. The season of Advent is a very special time for Christians, a time to anticipate the coming of Emmanuel and the emergence of His grace in our lives. But Advent is also important corporately, for the Church and for our University, because it is in Christ’s appearance among us that we find our true identity.

We describe a new method of identifying night-time clouds over the Pierre Auger Observatory using infrared data from the Imager instruments on the GOES-12 and GOES-13 satellites. We compare cloud identifications resulting from our method to those obtained by the Central Laser Facility of the Auger Observatory. Using our new method we can now develop cloud probability maps for the 3000 km2 of the Pierre Auger Observatory twice per hour with a spatial resolution of ∼2.4 km by ∼5.5 km. Our method could also be applied to monitor cloud cover for other ground-based observatories and for space-based observatories. © 2013 …

Nonlinear Scoring Functions For Similarity-Based Ligand Docking And Binding Affinity Prediction, Michal Brylinski Nov 2013

Nonlinear Scoring Functions For Similarity-Based Ligand Docking And Binding Affinity Prediction, Michal Brylinski

Faculty Publications

A common strategy for virtual screening considers a systematic docking of a large library of organic compounds into the target sites in protein receptors with promising leads selected based on favorable intermolecular interactions. Despite a continuous progress in the modeling of protein-ligand interactions for pharmaceutical design, important challenges still remain, thus the development of novel techniques is required. In this communication, we describe eSimDock, a new approach to ligand docking and binding affinity prediction. eSimDock employs nonlinear machine learning-based scoring functions to improve the accuracy of ligand ranking and similarity-based binding pose prediction, and to increase the tolerance to structural …

Koszul Duality And Semisimplicity Of Frobenius, Pramod N. Achar, Simon Riche Nov 2013

Koszul Duality And Semisimplicity Of Frobenius, Pramod N. Achar, Simon Riche

Faculty Publications

A fundamental result of Beǐlinson-Ginzburg-Soergel states that on flag varieties and related spaces, a certain modified version of the category of adic perverse sheaves exhibits a phenomenon known as Koszul duality. The modification essentially consists of discarding objects whose stalks carry a nonsemisimple action of Frobenius. In this paper, we prove that a number of common sheaf functors (various pull-backs and push-forwards) induce corresponding functors on the modified category or its triangulated analogue. In particular, we show that these functors preserve semisimplicity of the Frobenius action. © Association des Annales de l'institut Fourier, 2013.

The Recess Appointments Clause does not permit the unilateral appointments to the NLRB made by the President in this case. Those appointments - made during a three-day “intra-session” break when the Senate was meeting pro forma - are unique in the history of the Republic. They are also the culmination of unnecessary and inappropriate Executive overreaching. This overreaching has undermined a valuable Senate prerogative in a manner unfathomable to the Founders and inconsistent with the design of the Constitution.

The primary purpose of this brief is to show that adhering to the original meaning of the Recess Appointments Clause has …

The Relevance Of The Contract Administrator’S Certificates Under The Principle Forms Of Irish Building Contract., Tony Cunningham

Other Resources

Decision-making is a key aspect of contract administration, and includes duties such as certification. This process requires the contract administrator to exercise judgement on various matters arising from the performance of the contract. In theRepublicofIreland, the principle forms of main contract are the Royal Institution of Architects in Ireland (RIAI) ‘Yellow Form’ for private sector work and the Government Construction Contracts Committee (GCCC) Public Works Contract for public sector contracts. These contracts require the contract administrator to issue certain certificates. This study identifies these certificates and explains the relevance of each.

The discussion describes the characteristics of certificates and examined …

Pakistan’s merchandise exports have declined from 0.18 percent in 1990 to 0.14 percent of the world export market in the last twenty five years. India’s share has tripled from 0.57 percent to 1.78 while Bangladesh’s share has risen from 0.05 percent to 0.14 percent in the same period. Pakistan’s exports, which used to be only one third of India, have fallen to one tenth and Bangladesh, which used to lag behind with its exports being only one third of Pakistan’s in 1990, exceeded our exports level last year. At the turn of the millennium, 97 percent of merchandise exports used …

Clinical Lab Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

A clear understanding of physicochemical factors governing nanoparticle toxicity is still in its infancy. We used a systematic approach to delineate physicochemical properties of nanoparticles that govern cytotoxicity. The cytotoxicity of fourth period metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs): TiO2, Cr2O3, Mn2O3, Fe2O3, NiO, CuO, and ZnO increases with the atomic number of the transition metal oxide. This trend was not cell-type specific, as observed in non-transformed human lung cells (BEAS-2B) and human bronchoalveolar carcinoma-derived cells (A549). Addition of NPs to the cell culture medium did not significantly …

Selenocysteine is the 21st naturally-occurring amino acid. Selenoproteins have diverse functions and many remain uncharacterized, but they are typically associated with antioxidant activity. The incorporation of selenocysteine into the nascent polypeptide chain recodes the TGA stop codon and this process depends upon a number of essential factors including the selenocysteine elongation factor (SEF). The transcriptional expression of SEF did not change significantly in tick midguts throughout the blood meal, but decreased in salivary glands to 20% at the end of the fast feeding phase. Since selenoprotein translation requires this specialized elongation factor, we targeted this gene for knockdown by RNAi …

One of the most iconic sights and sounds of the holidays is a ringing bell and The Salvation Army Red Kettle. With the Christmas season right around the corner, The Salvation Army offices of Cleveland and Rutherford Counties are seeking volunteers to help at various locations throughout both counties. While some members of the Gardner-Webb University family have already volunteered to give their time, more people are needed to ring bells as well as help with the food and toy distributions for families in need the week of Dec. 16.

Information-Entropic Stability Bound For Compact Objects: Application To Q-Balls And The Chandrasekhar Limit Of Polytropes, Marcelo Gleiser, Damian Sowinski

Dartmouth Scholarship

Spatially-bound objects across diverse length and energy scales are characterized by a binding energy. We propose that their spatial structure is mathematically encoded as information in their momentum modes and described by a measure known as configurational entropy (CE). Investigating solitonic Q-balls and stars with a polytropic equation of state P=Kργ, we show that objects with large binding energy have low CE, whereas those at the brink of instability (zero binding energy) have near maximal CE. In particular, we use the CE to find the critical charge allowing for classically stable Q-balls and the Chandrasekhar limit for white dwarfs (γ=4/3) …
