Single-Peaked Preferences Over Multidimensional Binary Alternatives, Jonathan K. Hodge, Lindsey Brown, Hoang Ha Nov 2013

Single-Peaked Preferences Over Multidimensional Binary Alternatives, Jonathan K. Hodge, Lindsey Brown, Hoang Ha

Open Access Publishing Support Funded Articles

Single-peaked preferences are important throughout social choice theory. In this article, we consider single-peaked preferences over multidimensional binary alternative spaces—that is, alternative spaces of the form {0, 1}n for some integer n ≥ 2. We show that preferences that are single-peaked with respect to a normalized separable base order are nonseparable except in the most trivial cases. We establish that two distinct base orders can induce the same single-peaked preference order if any only if they differ by a transposition of their two central elements. We then use this result to enumerate single-peaked binary preference orders over a separable …

Brain Mapping Of The Mismatch Negativity Response To Vowel Variances Of Natural And Synthetic Phonemes, Lyndsy Marie Smith Nov 2013

Brain Mapping Of The Mismatch Negativity Response To Vowel Variances Of Natural And Synthetic Phonemes, Lyndsy Marie Smith

Theses and Dissertations

The mismatch negativity (MMN) is a specific event-related potential (ERP) component used frequently in the observation of auditory processing. The MMN is elicited by a deviant stimulus randomly presented in the presence of repeating stimuli. The current study utilized the MMN response in order to determine the temporal (timing) and linguistic processing of natural and synthetic vowel stimuli. It was hypothesized that a significant MMN response would be elicited by natural and synthetic vowel stimuli. Brain mapping of the MMN response was hypothesized to yield temporal resolution information, which would provide detail regarding the sequential processing differences between natural and …

Global Health Faculty Publications

Background

Assessing the mortality impact of the 2009 influenza A H1N1 virus (H1N1pdm09) is essential for optimizing public health responses to future pandemics. The World Health Organization reported 18,631 laboratory-confirmed pandemic deaths, but the total pandemic mortality burden was substantially higher. We estimated the 2009 pandemic mortality burden through statistical modeling of mortality data from multiple countries.

Methods and Findings

We obtained weekly virology and underlying cause-of-death mortality time series for 2005–2009 for 20 countries covering ~35% of the world population. We applied a multivariate linear regression model to estimate pandemic respiratory mortality in each collaborating country. We then used …

Physical Sciences Publications

We present the results of a multiwavelength observational campaign on the TeV binary system LS I +61° 303 with the VERITAS telescope array (>200 GeV), Fermi-LAT (0.3-300 GeV), and Swift/XRT (2-10 keV). The data were taken from 2011 December through 2012 January and show a strong detection in all three wavebands. During this period VERITAS obtained 24.9 hr of quality selected livetime data in which LS I +61° 303 was detected at a statistical significance of 11.9σ. These TeV observations show evidence for nightly variability in the TeV regime at a post-trial significance of 3.6σ. The combination …

Longitudinal Relations Between Dating Violence Victimization And Perpetration And Substance Use: The Moderating Role Of Gender And School Norms For Dating Violence, Katherine Taylor Nov 2013

Longitudinal Relations Between Dating Violence Victimization And Perpetration And Substance Use: The Moderating Role Of Gender And School Norms For Dating Violence, Katherine Taylor

Theses and Dissertations

Adolescent dating violence is commonly experienced by adolescents and is associated with a variety of negative outcomes. Stress and coping and social learning theories suggest that dating violence victimization may predict increased substance use and dating violence perpetration. However, few studies have assessed these relations over time, and existing studies have not assessed physical and psychological dating violence victimization separately nor focused on early adolescent populations. The current study addressed these gaps by examining longitudinal relations between physical and psychological dating violence victimization and substance use and physical and psychological dating violence perpetration among early adolescents. The extent to which …

A Novel Spam Campaign In Online Social Networks, Yufeng Zhen Nov 2013

A Novel Spam Campaign In Online Social Networks, Yufeng Zhen

Theses and Dissertations

The increasing popularity of the Online Social Networks (OSNs)\nomenclature{$OSNs$}{Online Social Networks} has made the OSNs major targets of spammers. They aim to illegally gather private information from users and spread spam to them. In this paper, we propose a new spam campaign that includes following key steps: creating fake accounts, picking legitimate accounts, forming friendships, earning trust, and spreading spam. The unique part in our spam campaign is the process of earning trust. By using social bots, we significantly lower the cost of earning trust and make it feasible in the real world. By spreading spam at a relatively low …

Sex Differences In Mother-Infant Interaction, Klaudia Kosiak Nov 2013

Sex Differences In Mother-Infant Interaction, Klaudia Kosiak

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Sex differences in human behavior have frequently been explored by researchers. Although there are numerous studies documenting sex differences between boys and girls from childhood into adulthood, few studies have adequately examined how genetics and environment interact in infancy to promote sex differences in infant behavior. Therefore, the present study sought to examine how sex differences in maternal behavior interact with differences in infant behavior. Maternal and infant behaviors were analyzed within the still-face paradigm, a paradigm which allows for examination of mother-infant interaction in normal, stressful, and recovery situations. It was hypothesized that infant boys would react with more …

The Role Of Animacy In Russian Morphosyntax, Zhanna A. Glushan Nov 2013

The Role Of Animacy In Russian Morphosyntax, Zhanna A. Glushan

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the effects of animacy in the syntax and morpho-syntax of language. More precisely, I examine cases in which minimal pairs, varying only in the animacy of the subject NP, show different morpho-syntactic behavior. This study suggests that a significant part of the explanation of these effects lies in the syntactic representation of argument structure—that animate and inanimate NPs, under certain conditions, receive different thematic roles, and thus occupy different structural positions at the syntactic level(s) where argument structure is represented. The findings of this project are shown to constitute a part of a broader generalization and find …

Spectral Analysis Of Nonstationary Heart Rate Of Neonates Receiving Therapeutic Hypothermia Treatment, Tareq Al-Shargabi Nov 2013

Spectral Analysis Of Nonstationary Heart Rate Of Neonates Receiving Therapeutic Hypothermia Treatment, Tareq Al-Shargabi

Theses and Dissertations

We studied Heart Rate Variability (HRV) evolution during therapeutic hypothermia in newborns with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) using spectral analysis. We hypothesized that HRV measures are predictive of neurological outcome in babies with HIE. Non-stationarity in the data causes inaccurate quantification of the spectral power. A modification was proposed to power spectral analysis approach to mitigate the effect of non-stationarity. The modified and the standard approaches were applied to cardiac beat-to-beat intervals of newborns receiving hypothermia treatment. The performance of the approaches in distinguishing the RRi dynamics of two groups of newborns was assessed using area under the receiver operating …

Enigmatic Allegory, Sara Virginia Kinsey Nov 2013

Enigmatic Allegory, Sara Virginia Kinsey

Theses and Dissertations

My artwork is autobiographical and shaped by my experiences. Collectively, it serves as a visual journal expressing a range of emotions honoring meaningful people, portraying important places, and commemorating significant events in my life. My art documents the progression from turmoil, despair, and isolation to growth, recovery, and gratitude. I utilize a recurring set of subjective symbols which hold personal significance. These symbols, which include robots, eggs, chairs, shoes, and trash cans, help me create narratives and visual continuity across my body of work. I purposefully omit some information to mask the entirety of the story being told. Typically, these …

香港子女贍養父母立法研究, King Yung, Anna Tang Nov 2013

香港子女贍養父母立法研究, King Yung, Anna Tang

Lingnan Theses

Ideal Dating And Sexual Partners For Low-Income Heterosexual African American Adolescents, Darnell Nathaniel Motley Nov 2013

Ideal Dating And Sexual Partners For Low-Income Heterosexual African American Adolescents, Darnell Nathaniel Motley

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Dating and sexual relationships among adolescents have been identified as both normative and beneficial. However, the research examining the dating and sexual relationships of African American adolescents has been narrow in scope, focusing primarily on risks of intimate partner violence, pregnancy, and STI/HIV transmission. This myopic focus has left a gap in the literature as it relates to the normative aspects of dating and sexual relationships for these youth.

The present study sought to better understand the dating and sexual partner preferences of 51 African American adolescents (male = 32, female = 19) recruited from Chicago and San Francisco. The …

Wave Heating And Jeans Escape In The Martian Upper Atmosphere, R. L. Walterscheid, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D., G. Schubert

Publications

Gusty flow over rough terrain is likely to be a significant source of fast gravity waves and acoustic waves in the atmosphere of Mars, as it is in Earth’s atmosphere. Accordingly, we have used a numerical model to study the dissipation in the thermosphere and exosphere of Mars of upward-propagating fast gravity waves and acoustic waves. Model simulations are performed for a range of wave periods and horizontal wavelengths. Wave amplitudes are constrained by the Mars Global Surveyor and Mars Odyssey aerobraking data, and gravity wave phase velocities are limited by occultation data. Dissipating gravity waves heat some regions of …

Extending Mpt Models To Rasch Mpt: A General Framework, Demonstration, And Applications, Quan Tang Nov 2013

Extending Mpt Models To Rasch Mpt: A General Framework, Demonstration, And Applications, Quan Tang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Multinomial processing tree (MPT) models, as a family of hierarchical multinomial models tailored by cognitive theories, have been proven to be successful and applied to cognitive psychometrics Traditional MPT models measure the probability of success for each cognitive stage given their hierarchical relationships. However, this measure neither addresses individual and item difference, nor characterizes the subject's ability and the difficulty of the cognitive stage. In this study, I extend the cognitive stage parameter in MPT models to a Rasch model, and recruit MPT models for a source monitoring paradigm as an example to demonstrate the extension. To evaluate the properties …

Fair Value Measurements Disclosure: Mandatory Adoption, Valuation And Disclosure Effects, Joseph Denard Reid Nov 2013

Fair Value Measurements Disclosure: Mandatory Adoption, Valuation And Disclosure Effects, Joseph Denard Reid

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The recent financial crisis caused fair value relevancy and appropriateness to be called to the forefront of academic research as the subject dominated the media headlines. To date, there is limited research available to adequately understand, interpret and evaluate the benefits and consequences of fair value valuation and related disclosures within a liquid market context. This three paper dissertation contributes to academic literature by providing some evidence of the effects of mandatory disclosure surrounding fair value in an illiquid or highly volatile market. The first paper examines the relationship between mandatory disclosure, implied cost of capital and financial reporting quality. …

Characterization Of Cast Iron Microdamage: Its Evolution And Impact On Material Properties, Kennedy Beaulieu Nov 2013

Characterization Of Cast Iron Microdamage: Its Evolution And Impact On Material Properties, Kennedy Beaulieu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

There is a lack of knowledge concerning the evolution of stress-induced damage in cast iron on the microstructural scale. This study addresses this need by investigating the continuous failure of gray cast iron (GCI) and nodular cast iron (NCI) microstructures using acoustic emissions (AE). Microstructural damage evolution is characterized by grouping into three distinct ensembles (stress ranges) for GCI and four for NCI. The amplitude of the AE damage events was interpreted as being proportional to the failure mechanism, with lower amplitude events attributed to graphite failure. Microstructural and failure analysis revealed the following failure mechanisms: graphite fracture and debonding …

Predeliberation Activity In Prefrontal Cortex And Striatum And The Prediction Of Subsequent Value Judgment, Uri Maoz, Ueli Rutishauser, Soyoun Kim, Xinying Cai, Christof Koch

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Rational, value-based decision-making mandates selecting the option with highest subjective expected value after appropriate deliberation. We examined activity in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and striatum of monkeys deciding between smaller, immediate rewards and larger, delayed ones. We previously found neurons that modulated their activity in this task according to the animal's choice, while it deliberated (choice neurons). Here we found neurons whose spiking activities were predictive of the spatial location of the selected target (spatial-bias neurons) or the size of the chosen reward (reward-bias neurons) before the onset of the cue presenting the decision-alternatives, and thus before rational deliberation …

Algorithms For Grid Graphs In The Mapreduce Model, Taylor P. Spangler Nov 2013

Algorithms For Grid Graphs In The Mapreduce Model, Taylor P. Spangler

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The MapReduce programming paradigm has seen widespread use in analyzing large data sets. Often these large data sets can be formulated as graphs. Many algorithms, such as filtering based algorithms, are designed to work efficiently for dense graphs - graphs with substantially more number of edges than the number of vertices. These algorithms are not optimized for sparse graphs - graphs where the number of edges is of the same order as the number of vertices. However, sparse graphs are also common in big data sets. In this thesis we present algorithms for maximal matching, approximate edge covering, and approximate …
