Suffering As Glory In Hans Urs Von Balthasar And James Cone, Joseph S. Flipper, Katy Leamy

Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium

Based on the paper delivered during the 2012 Annual Meeting, Flipper and Leamy elaborate the implications of the respective reflections on the crucifixion of Christ and his descent into hell in the work of Hans Urs von Balthasar and James H. Cone. They conclude that, together, Balthasar and Cone supply a theological justification for seeing the oppressed and rejected as the privileged media of God’s glorious revelation. Frederick

Presidential Versus Vice Presidential Home State Advantage: A Comparative Analysis Of Electoral Significance, Causes, And Processes, 1884-2008, Christopher J. Devine, Kyle C. Kopko Dec 2013

Presidential Versus Vice Presidential Home State Advantage: A Comparative Analysis Of Electoral Significance, Causes, And Processes, 1884-2008, Christopher J. Devine, Kyle C. Kopko

Political Science Faculty Publications

This article compares the electoral significance, causes, and processes associated with presidential versus vice presidential home state advantages. Our analysis of presidential election returns from 1884 through 2008 demonstrates that presidential candidates generally receive a large, statistically significant home state advantage. However, vice presidential home state advantages are statistically negligible and conditioned on the interactive effect of political experience and state population. Furthermore, the results indicate that the mobilization of new voters primarily accounts for presidential home state advantage, while vice presidential home state advantage is mainly due to the conversion of existing voters. Although home state advantages do occur …

Characterization Of Polyetherimide Under Static, Dynamic, And Multiple Impact Conditions, Bryan Zuanetti Dec 2013

Characterization Of Polyetherimide Under Static, Dynamic, And Multiple Impact Conditions, Bryan Zuanetti

HIM 1990-2015

The application of polymers in robust engineering designs is on the rise due to their excellent mechanical properties such as high fracture toughness, specific strength, durability, as well as, thermal and chemical resistances. Implementation of some advanced polymeric solids is limited due to the lack of available mechanical properties. In order for these materials to endure strenuous engineering designs it is vital to investigate their response in multiple loading rates and conditions. In this thesis, the mechanical response of polyethermide (PEI) is characterized under quasi-static, high strain rate, and multiple impact conditions. Standard tension, torsion, and compression experiments are performed …

Fracture Toughness Of A Hyperelastic Material During Surgical Cutting, Kevin Smith Dec 2013

Fracture Toughness Of A Hyperelastic Material During Surgical Cutting, Kevin Smith

HIM 1990-2015

Despite being one of the most important organs of vertebrates, the material properties of skin are also one of the most poorly understood. In the field of designing medical devices and surgical tools there are significant advantages to having a model that describes the interaction of forces between a blade tip and skin during surgical cutting. In general, skin can best be described as a composite layer consisting of a viscoelastic dermis with interwoven collagen and elastin fibers beneath a superficial epidermis. The purpose of this research is to study the fracture toughness of porcine skin during practical cutting applications, …

Development And Validation Of An Absorption Sensor For Time-Resolved Measurements Of Co And Co2, Kyle Thurmond Dec 2013

Development And Validation Of An Absorption Sensor For Time-Resolved Measurements Of Co And Co2, Kyle Thurmond

HIM 1990-2015

A sensor was developed for simultaneous measurements of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide fluctuations in internal combustion engine exhaust gases. This sensor utilizes low-cost and compact LEDs that emit in the 3-5[micro]m wavelength range which are more appropriate for practical applications than the more traditionally used lasers. An affordable, fast response sensor that can measure these gases has broad application that can lead to more efficient, fuel flexible engines and regulations of harmful emissions. LEDs have a more spectrally broad and diverging emission than lasers which presented many design challenges. The optical design software ZEMAX was utilized to overcome these …

Implementation Of Performance-Based Bridge Deck Protective Systems, Robert J. Frosch, Michael E. Kreger, Brad V. Strandquist Dec 2013

Implementation Of Performance-Based Bridge Deck Protective Systems, Robert J. Frosch, Michael E. Kreger, Brad V. Strandquist

JTRP Technical Reports

When considering the durability of a bridge, the concrete deck is often the most vulnerable component and can be the limiting factor affecting service life. To enhance the durability of both new and existing bridge decks, a protective system is often provided to prevent or delay the ingress of chlorides and moisture to the reinforcing steel. In the state of Indiana, this protective system typically comes in the form of a concrete overlay or a thin polymer overlay. Another protective system widely used in the United States and in many countries internationally consists of a waterproofing membrane overlaid with asphaltic …

Feasibility Study Of In-Situ Characterization Of Size Distribution Of Air Voids In Concrete Pavements, Kai Ming Li, Bao N. Tong, Sheng Liu Dec 2013

Feasibility Study Of In-Situ Characterization Of Size Distribution Of Air Voids In Concrete Pavements, Kai Ming Li, Bao N. Tong, Sheng Liu

JTRP Technical Reports

This report concerns a feasibility study on the use of a non-destructive and non-invasive method to determine the size distribution of air voids in fresh concrete, which will be used for laying concrete pavement. A preliminary review of different techniques suggested that the measurement of the p-wave velocity of ultrasound pulses transmitted through a fresh concrete specimen offers the most straightforward approach. This report describes an experimental study to address the design of an experimental test rig, the selection of appropriate equipment, and the determination of the p-wave velocity in fresh cementitious materials. The paper starts with the ultrasound characterization …

Development Of A Control Banding Method For Selecting Respiratory Protection Against Bioaerosols, Jacques Lavoie, Eve Neesham-Grenon, Maximilien Debia, Yves Cloutier, Geneviève Marchand

Smooth Muscle-Specific Myosin Phosphatase Target Subunit 1 (Mypt1): An Important Piece Of The Puzzle., Satish Rattan

Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Faculty Papers

Dear Sir:

We have read with great interest a recent article by Dr. He et al. in the June issue of Gastroenterology.1 The studies provide strong evidence in favor of the concept that smooth muscle–specific myosin phosphatase target subunit 1 (MYPT1) of myosin light chain phosphatase (MLCP) plays a critical role in the agonist-induced contraction/relaxation of the smooth muscle. This was shown in their studies using animals with knocked out MYPT1-/-. The investigators employed the Cre-loxP system in which they used the promoter region and exon 1 of Mypt1 flanked by 2 loxP sites …

This Space Intentionally Left Blank: What To Do When Hearsay And Rule 106 Completeness Collide, Michael A. Hardin

Fordham Law Review

Federal Rule of Evidence 106 provides that when one party in a trial or hearing offers into evidence a portion of a statement in a misleading way, the opposing party can offer the rest, or some other portion of, that document or recorded statement at the same time if it is necessary for the factfinder to understand and contextualize the first part. Sometimes, however, the other portion, or “remainder,” would be inadmissible if it were offered by itself, either because it is hearsay or for some other reason. This leaves the court in a difficult position: Should it allow the …

A Good Old Age: Experiencing A Satisfying Life, Kaitlin Thimann

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The definition of successful aging has been changing, however, there is a lack of current studies on existing aging trends and how to experience a good old age. The purpose of this study is to identify and describe themes and factors that can lead to an individual experiencing a good old age. This study is a qualitative, exploratory ethnography in which interviews were used to gather information on a good old age from adults aged sixty-five and older. The study revealed that there were several common factors throughout the interviews. Physical and mental health, social support, and financial stability are …
