Comparing Resiliency In Early And Late-Life Bereavement., Janna Lynn Imel Dec 2013

Comparing Resiliency In Early And Late-Life Bereavement., Janna Lynn Imel

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses

Bereavement is the state of dealing with a significant loss (M.S. Stroebe, Hansson, Schut, & Stroebe, 2008). Although evidence suggests that there are differences in the bereavement and coping styles of older and younger adults, few studies have been done focusing solely on the differences. The lack of research on this topic merits further study. The purpose of this project was to examine the differences in negative emotions, affective complexity, and repressive coping, between bereaved younger and older adults. We hypothesized that bereaved older adults would report fewer negative emotions, have greater emotional complexity, and use repressive coping more than …

Reliability (Or "Lack Thereof") Of On-Line Preference Revelation: A Controlled Experimental Analysis, Li Chen, James R. Marsden, Zhongju Zhang Dec 2013

Reliability (Or "Lack Thereof") Of On-Line Preference Revelation: A Controlled Experimental Analysis, Li Chen, James R. Marsden, Zhongju Zhang

College of Business and Economics

Networks permitting anonymous contributions continue to expand and flourish. In some networks, the reliability of a contribution is not of particular importance. In other settings, however, the development of a network is driven by specific purposes which make the reliability of information exchanged of significant importance. One such situation involves the use of information markets for aggregating individuals' preferences on new or emerging technologies. At this point, there remains skepticism concerning the reliability of the preference revelations in such markets and thus the resulting preference aggregations and rankings of emerging technologies. In this paper, we study the reliability of on-line …

Elementary Differential Equations, William F. Trench

Textbooks Collection

Elementary Differential Equations with Boundary Value Problems is written for students in science, engineering, and mathematics who have completed calculus through partial differentiation. If your syllabus includes Chapter 10 (Linear Systems of Differential Equations), your students should have some preparation in linear algebra.

In writing this book I have been guided by the these principles:

An elementary text should be written so the student can read it with comprehension without too much pain. I have tried to put myself in the student’s place, and have chosen to err on the side of too much detail rather than not enough.

An …

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The photochemistry of a new photoaffinity labeling (PAL) agent, 5-azido-2-(N,N-diethylamino)pyridine, was studied in aprotic and protic solvents using femtosecond-to-microsecond transient absorption and product analysis, in conjunction with ab initio multiconfigurational and multireference quantum chemical calculations. The excited singlet SI state is spectroscopically dark, whereas photoexcitation to higher-lying singlet excited S-2 and S-3 states drives the photochemical reaction toward a barrierless ultrafast relaxation path via two conical intersections to S-1, where N-2 elimination leads to the formation of the closed-shell singlet nitrene. The singlet nitrene undergoes intersystem crossing (ISC) to the triplet nitrene in aprotic and protic solvents as well as …

From Border Ruffian To Abolitionist Martyr: William Lloyd Garrison’S Changing Ideologies On John Brown And Antislavery, Devon Proudfoot

HIST 4800 Boston (Herndon)

The master narrative portrays a strict boundary between the pacifist abolitionists, and the militant abolitionists. My project looks at the letters of correspondence sent by William Lloyd Garrison in the six months following John Brown’s killings at Kansas in 1856 and Brown’s Raid on Harper’s Ferry in 1859. My research aimed at gauging Garrison’s responses to the militaristic approaches taken by Brown, which differed from his self-proclaimed pacifist views. I looked at fourteen letters from June to November 1856 and ten from November 1859 to April 1860. The recipient of these letters ranged from Garrison’s son, to local ministers, and …

Institutional Theory And The Evolution Of Marketing Channels In Emerging Economies: Setting A Research Agenda, Birud Sindhav Dec 2013

Institutional Theory And The Evolution Of Marketing Channels In Emerging Economies: Setting A Research Agenda, Birud Sindhav

Marketing and Management Faculty Publications

The story of the growth of emerging economies is about the growth of their marketing institutions. Marketing channels are the key marketing institution in enabling the flow of goods and services. However, marketing scholars typically rely on models and theories devised in the developed economies to study the marketing channels in emerging economies, and these include theories based on political economy-based frameworks that emphasize power and dependence. We argue that often the institutional drives to gain legitimacy provide a powerful lens to understand the evolution of marketing channels. In this conceptual paper, we illustrate our arguments through a few examples, …

Countermeasures, or techniques for hiding guilt during a credibility assessment examination, have long been an important topic in cognitive psychology and criminal justice fields. With recent IS research on automated screening systems, understanding the potential for countermeasures in this new paradigm is of increasing importance. This paper reports on a large experiment examining countermeasures in an automated deception detection screening context. The effectiveness of traditional countermeasure types (mental and physical) are examined, as well as an exploratory approach of trying several countermeasures at once. The exploratory approach was tested to investigate a proposed novel systems-inspired solution to countermeasures—triangulating on deception …
