Positioning An Innovative Flame-Weeding Technology Into Crop Production, Strahinja V. Stepanovic

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Propane flaming has a potential to be utilized for effective PRE and POST weed control in both organic and conventional farming systems. Field studies were conducted at the Haskell Agricultural Laboratory of the University of Nebraska in 2010, 2011, and 2012 to: (1) describe dose–response curves for propane when flaming selected weed species at different growth stages, (2) determine corn and soybean tolerance to single and repeated flaming by utilizing the equipment designed to selectively flame weeds in row crops with torches positioned parallel to the crop row, and (3) determine the effectiveness of flaming and cultivation for weed control …

Feeling In Character: Towards An Ethics Of Emotion, John Monteleone Dec 2013

Feeling In Character: Towards An Ethics Of Emotion, John Monteleone

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation contends that emotions are subject to ethical assessment, not simply as motives or overt expressions, but in their own right. Emotions, I argue, are subject to assessment because they are aspects of a person's character. Specifically, emotions involve voluntary acts of attention, which are due to habituation. These acts show character by manifesting certain stable, deeply-held desires called 'concerns.' This view, dubbed 'Attentional Voluntarism,' is opposed to the prevalent view, dubbed 'Rationalism,' that emotions are subject to assessment because of their propositional content. Rationalism is unable to account for certain kinds of irrational emotion, where one forms an …

Hedonic Housing Prices In Paris: An Unbalanced Spatial Lag Pseudo-Panel Model With Nested Random Effects, Badi H. Baltagi, Georges Bresson, Jean-Michel Etienne Dec 2013

Hedonic Housing Prices In Paris: An Unbalanced Spatial Lag Pseudo-Panel Model With Nested Random Effects, Badi H. Baltagi, Georges Bresson, Jean-Michel Etienne

Center for Policy Research

This paper estimates a hedonic housing model based on flats sold in the city of Paris over the period 1990-2003. This is done using maximum likelihood estimation taking into account the nested structure of the data. Paris is historically divided into 20 arrondissements, each divided into four quartiers (quarters), which in turn contain between 15 and 169 blocks (îlot, in French) per quartier. This is an unbalanced pseudo-panel data containing 156,896 transactions. Despite the richness of the data, many neighborhood characteristics are not observed, and we attempt to capture these neighborhood spill-over effects using a spatial lag model. Using Likelihood …

Evaluation Of Oil Extraction On Corn Dry-Milling Byproducts In Growing And Finishing Cattle Diets, Melissa L. Jolly Dec 2013

Evaluation Of Oil Extraction On Corn Dry-Milling Byproducts In Growing And Finishing Cattle Diets, Melissa L. Jolly

Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Dry-milling ethanol plants produce distillers grains (DG) and condensed distillers solubles (CDS). Before thin stillage is evaporated to CDS, corn oil is removed via centrifugation, producing de-oiled CDS. Depending on plant availability, CDS can be marketed or combined with DG to produce de-oiled distillers grains plus solubles (DGS). Currently, there are no data available on animal performance when corn oil is removed via centrifugation of the solubles stream. Therefore, two finishing experiments, a metabolism experiment, and a growing experiment were conducted to evaluate the effects of corn oil removal on cattle performance, carcass characteristics, and the effects on nutrient digestibility. …

Effects Of Maternal Nutrition And Post-Weaning Management In A Late Spring Calving System And Synchronization Of Estrus Using Fixed Time Ai Protocols, John D. Harms

Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Three experiments were conducted to determine the impact of development systems, maternal protein supplementation, and estrus synchronization systems on beef cattle. Experiment 1 evaluated the effects of winter supplementation on cow performance and the effects of post-weaning management on progeny. Late spring calving cows grazed dormant range or meadow over winter and received either supplementation or no supplementation. Steer and heifer progeny were weaned and placed on dormant meadow or fed hay ad libitum. One half of the steers were placed in the feedlot at the end of treatment and the other half grazed range over summer. Cow winter treatment …

Transcriptional Regulation Of The Porcine Gnrh Receptor Gene By Glucocorticoids, Chanho Lee Dec 2013

Transcriptional Regulation Of The Porcine Gnrh Receptor Gene By Glucocorticoids, Chanho Lee

Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Binding of GnRH to its receptor (GnRHR) stimulates the synthesis and secretion of the gonadotropins, as well as up-regulation of GnRHR. Thus, the interaction between GnRH and GnRHR represents a central point for regulation of reproduction. Glucocorticoids alter reproduction by reducing GnRH responsiveness of gonadotropes within the anterior pituitary gland, potentially via transcriptional regulation of the GnRHR gene. Investigation into this mechanism, however, revealed that the murine GnRHR gene was stimulated by glucocorticoids. To determine the effect of glucocorticoids on porcine GnRHR gene expression, gonadotrope-derived αT3-1 cells were transiently transfected with a vector containing 5118 bp of 5’ flanking sequence …

To Say What The Law Is: Rules, Results, And The Dangers Of Inferential Stare Decisis, Adam N. Steinman Dec 2013

To Say What The Law Is: Rules, Results, And The Dangers Of Inferential Stare Decisis, Adam N. Steinman

Faculty Scholarship

Judicial decisions do more than resolve disputes. They are also crucial sources of prospective law, because stare decisis obligates future courts to follow those decisions. Yet there remains tremendous uncertainty about how we identify a judicial decision’s lawmaking content. Does stare decisis require future courts to follow the rules stated in a precedent-setting opinion? Or must future courts merely reconcile their decisions with the ultimate result of the precedent-setting case? Although it is widely assumed that a rule-based approach puts greater constraints on future courts, two recent Supreme Court decisions—Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. v. Dukes and Ashcroft v. Iqbal—turn this conventional …

Reanalyzing Cost-Benefit Analysis: Toward A Framework Of Function(S) And Form(S), Robert B. Ahdieh

Faculty Scholarship

The analysis herein arises from the collision course between the sweeping reforms mandated by the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010 and a single sentence of the U.S. Code, adopted nearly fifteen years earlier and largely forgotten ever since. Few were likely thinking of Section 106 of the National Securities Market Improvement Act when the Dodd-Frank Act was enacted on July 21, 2010. As applied by the D.C. Circuit less than a year later in Business Roundtable v. SEC, however, that provision’s peculiar requirement of cost-benefit analysis could prove the new legislation’s undoing.

To help bridge this disconnect, this Article discusses the interrelationship between intellectual property and public health in the context of communicable diseases. This type of disease is intentionally picked to highlight how developments abroad could easily affect what happens at home, and vice versa.

The first half of this Article recounts three distinct stories about viruses responsible for AIDS, SARS, and the avian influenza (H5N1). The first story focuses on the ongoing developments within the …

The Case For A Legislative Amendment Against Accessory Copyright For Grey Market Products: What Can The U.S. Learn From Singapore And Australia, Irene Calboli, Mary Lafrance Dec 2013

The Case For A Legislative Amendment Against Accessory Copyright For Grey Market Products: What Can The U.S. Learn From Singapore And Australia, Irene Calboli, Mary Lafrance

Faculty Scholarship

In this article, we suggest that the U.S. Congress could implement a legislative provision prohibiting copyright protection for incidental product features in the context of parallel imports. The U.S. would not be the first country to implement such a provision. In 1994, Singapore pioneered the adoption of a similar provision, which was introduced as an amendment to the SG 1987 Copyright Act. A few years later, in 1998, Australia incorporated a similar amendment to its Aust. Copyright Act 1968. In this article, we analyse in detail the Singapore and Australia provisions and, building upon these provisions, we suggest …

The Detection Of A Light Echo From Sn 2007af, Dina Drozdov Dec 2013

The Detection Of A Light Echo From Sn 2007af, Dina Drozdov

All Theses

Type Ia supernovae are widely studied for their uniform properties, which make them ideal candidates for cosmological surveys. Although these exploding stars are popular targets, key funda-mental questions about their nature remain, and new techniques need to be developed to investigate the progenitor system and explosion mechanisms. Light echoes are created by light scattering off dust that reaches the observer after the direct path light from the explosion arrived and have been studied for the past 100 years. Light echoes from Type Ia supernovae are rare, with only a few cases being discovered in the past decades. Because light echoes …

Optimal Retrofit Strategy Design For Highway Bridges Under Seismic Hazards: A Case Study Of Charleston, Sc, Shawn Parmelee Dec 2013

Optimal Retrofit Strategy Design For Highway Bridges Under Seismic Hazards: A Case Study Of Charleston, Sc, Shawn Parmelee

All Theses

A significant number of US highway bridges are inadequate for seismic loads and could be seriously damaged or collapse during a relatively small earthquake. On the most recent infrastructure report card from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), one-third of the bridges in the United States are deemed to be structurally deficient. To improve this situation, at-risk bridges must be identified, evaluated, and effective retrofitting programs implemented to reduce their seismic vulnerabilities. In practice, the Federal Highway Administration uses the expected damage method and indices method to assess the condition of bridges. These methods compare the severity of expected …

Cost And Embodied Energy Optimization Of Rectangular Reinforced Concrete Beams, Alexander Kosloski Dec 2013

Cost And Embodied Energy Optimization Of Rectangular Reinforced Concrete Beams, Alexander Kosloski

All Theses

Concrete has a large environmental footprint so it is desirable to find ways to efficiently design structural members. Engineers can exercise their abilities early on in the design phase of construction projects to reduce the environmental footprint by minimizing the amount of materials required. One way to achieve these results is to optimize the design of structural concrete. In this study, simple-span rectangular reinforced concrete (RC) beams with a range of different bending moments were analyzed. The primary goal was to combine life cycle analysis (LCA), numerical optimization, and reinforced concrete mechanics to create a framework for designing efficient RC …

Effects Of Iteration On Concept Development, Shivraj Ranganathan Dec 2013

Effects Of Iteration On Concept Development, Shivraj Ranganathan

All Theses

Iteration in the conceptual design stage is defined as repetition of design tasks to incorporate new information. A more concise definition of iteration relevant to this research would be the progression of design through different abstraction levels or design stages, defining and refining design solutions while progressing from initial concepts to a more detailed design. Although it is believed that iteration has a positive effect on the quality of ideas in the design process, this experimental study presents an opportunity to determine the effects of iteration on quality of concepts and the factors that lead to increased quality of concepts. …

All Theses

Several ideation methods are available and used by engineering designers to enable the generation of alternative designs [1]. However, there has been little work done to understand the role that the design problem given to participants plays in the ideation process. The contribution of this research is found through the proposed guidelines with respect to the type of requirements to include as part of the design problem in order to achieve the desired quantity, quality, novelty, and variety of solutions during the early stages of the design process. This work is the first attempt at analyzing the effect of requirement …

The Fabrication And Study Of Silver Nanoparticle Structures, Aubrie Pfirman Dec 2013

The Fabrication And Study Of Silver Nanoparticle Structures, Aubrie Pfirman

All Theses

Nanotechnology and the synthesis of nanoparticle systems are attractive in part because of interesting, tunable optical and electrical properties that are not observed with bulk material. Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) interact with visible light more efficiently than any other system due to the excitation of plasmon resonances, which are the collective oscillations of the free electron density. These collective oscillations produce an enhanced local electromagnetic (EM) field: this field is responsible for highly-utilized phenomena such as surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), enhanced fluorescence, surface enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA), and many others. Many experiments have been conducted to optimize and tailor …
