Deutsche Touristen Und Ihre Suche Nach Authentizität, Charlotte Kubicz
Deutsche Touristen Und Ihre Suche Nach Authentizität, Charlotte Kubicz
The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal
This essay is a study that combines the disciplines of film studies and cultural studies to analyze two contemporary German films “Erleuchtung Garantiert” (2000) and “Kirschblüten” (2008) by the filmmaker Dorris Dörrie. They both depict the pilgrimage of German tourists to Japan in the effort to restore a sense of authenticity to their lives. The study concentrates on the depiction of the encounter between Eastern and Western culture in connection with the theory of “Orientalism” by Edward Saïd. The analysis focuses on the confrontation of the illusory Japanese authenticity, as imagined by the German tourists, and the “real” Japanese authenticity …

Buongiorno, Notte: Dinamiche Familiari E La Prospettiva Dei Mass Media, Katherine Susca
The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal
In his film Buongiorno, notte, Marco Bellocchio seeks to represent the kidnapping of Aldo Moro both as a family melodrama and as an analysis of the historical reconstruction of the Moro Case through mass media representations. Bellocchio claims to “have taken certain liberties” with the historical facts of the Moro Case in an effort to pursue his more artistic and sociological investigation, in the tradition of Manzoni. The metamorphosis of the historical revolutionary Laura Braghetti into the traditionally feminine, hesitant, and doubtful character of Chiara, the positioning of Moro as a father figure to his captors, and the insistence upon …
Five Factor Model Personality Profiles Of University Of North Dakota Unmanned Aircraft Systems Students, Zachary Peter Waller
Five Factor Model Personality Profiles Of University Of North Dakota Unmanned Aircraft Systems Students, Zachary Peter Waller
Theses and Dissertations
A great deal of effort has been made to quantify personality characteristics in the pilots of manned aircraft. However, analysis of similar characteristics of individuals interested in piloting Unmanned Aircraft (UA) remains relatively unexplored. This research examined the Five Factor Model (FFM) personality profiles of individuals pursuing Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) studies at the University of North Dakota (UND). Using the Big Five Inventory (BFI) general personality index, the responses of a UAS Student group (N=65) were compared to a Normative sample group (N=248) previously collected by Petros (2013). Apart from the two highest scoring factors in each group (i.e. …
Medication Adherence: To Have Is To Hold, James A. Benn
Medication Adherence: To Have Is To Hold, James A. Benn
Theses and Dissertations
Nature of the problem: Medication non-adherence is consistently the most frequent cause of mental health decompensation, relapse of mental illness, and hospitalization. The solution to non-adherence remains quite elusive, despite it being relatively easy to identity as the most major obstacle to successful control of mental illness.
Method: Eighteen documents published between years 2002-2012 were rated using the AACN’s evidence leveling system. The 18 studies were examined to better understand what is known and not known about the challenge we face in trying to effect recovery and to prevent relapse of mental illness in the United States.
Results: Various study …
General Anesthesia And The Importance Of Smoking Cessation, Katie R. Pence
General Anesthesia And The Importance Of Smoking Cessation, Katie R. Pence
Theses and Dissertations
Despite the known consequences of cigarette smoking, one third of the population of industrialized countries continue to smoke (Rodrigo, 2000). Cigarette smoking alters nonnal physiologic function of the cardiac and respiratory systems and increases risks in the perioperative period for general anesthesia. Systematic reviews and randomized controlled trials have reached the following conclusion: smokers who stop smoking four to eight weeks prior to a scheduled surgery are less likely to develop complications post operatively. Eight weeks of smoking cessation prior to anesthesia is considered to be optimal. Smokers have been noted to possibly need increased analgesia, sedatives, and non-depolarizing muscle …
Responding To A Community Tuberculosis Outbreak: Public Health Nursing Interventions, Deborah J. Swanson
Responding To A Community Tuberculosis Outbreak: Public Health Nursing Interventions, Deborah J. Swanson
Theses and Dissertations
The role of the public health nurse in responding to a tuberculosis (TB) outbreak is instrumental in controlling the disease and preventing further spread in a community. This paper focuses on the interventions carried out by public health nurses in Grand Forks, ND where a TB outbreak occurred from 20 IO until 2013 with a peak in cases identified in late 2012. The population affected had unstable housing, low socioeconomic status, and other risk factors for TB. A total of 26 adult and pediatric cases of TB were identified among a closely connected social network with multiple and prolonged exposures …

Non-Partisan Or Not Interested: The Carbondale League Of Women Voters' Response To Civil Rights During The 1960s, Jazma Sutton
2014
This paper focuses on the policies and actions of the Carbondale branch of the LWV. In particular, it focuses on the confusions surrounding the LWV’s engagement with African American Civil Rights. Drawing on organizational papers, internal memoranda, and regional newspaper clippings, this paper analyzes the ambiguities of the LWV’s racial politics. It finds that at the height of the Civil Rights Movement, these women doubtlessly spent a great deal of time discussing the issues. Yet it is also true that a great deal of time was dedicated to finding ways to protect the LWV’s “image.” This often translated into overlooking …

Intraspecific Variation Among Clones Of A Naıve Rare Grass, David J. Gibson, Justin Dewey, Helene Goosens, Misty M. Dodd
Publications
Intraspecific variation can have a major impact on plant community composition yet there is little information available on the extent that such variation by an already established species affects interspecific interactions of an invading species. The current research examined the competitiveness of clones of a globally rare but locally common native grass, Calamagrostis porteri ssp. insperata to invasion by Alliaria petiolata, a non-native invasive species. A greenhouse experiment was conducted twice over consecutive years in which 15 clones from three populations of Calamagrostis were paired with rosettes of Alliaria in pots containing native forest soil previously uninvaded by Alliaria …

Southeast South Dakota Experiment Farm Annual Progress Report: 2013, Agricultural Experiment Station
Agricultural Experiment Station and Research Farm Annual Reports
The 2013 season brought some welcome relief from the drought of the previous year. Our yields were much improved, averaging 175 bushel per acre for corn and 50 bu/ac for soybeans . Several new developments were undertaken at the farm in the 2013 season. We established an area for research where grazing is integrated with crop production – so we now have some scope to conduct research looking at the effects of how grazing crop residues, cover crops and annual forages impacts crop productivity and soil health. Working with Chris Hay from the Ag. and Biological Systems Engineering Dept. at …
Assessing Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists’ Attitudes Toward And Barriers To The Use Of Evidence-Based Anesthesia Practice, Laurie E. Parkman
Assessing Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists’ Attitudes Toward And Barriers To The Use Of Evidence-Based Anesthesia Practice, Laurie E. Parkman
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Translational and Clinical Research Projects
Evidence-based practice is the integration and synthesis of the best research evidence with clinical expertise and patient values. Use of evidence-based practice decreases variability in care and improves patient outcomes. This research project assessed variables that inhibit the adoption of evidence-based practice into individual CRNAs’ practice. Ninety-two CRNAs in Georgia participated in an email survey to assess attitudes and perceived barriers to evidence-based practice. Attitudes toward evidence-based practice were assessed with the Evidence-Based Practice Questionnaire (EBPQ), and perceived barriers to the use of evidence-based practice were assessed with the BARRIERS scale. A Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient was computed to assess …

Minimal observational evidence exists for fast transition region (TR) upflows in the presence of cool loops. Observations of such occurrences challenge notions of standard solar atmospheric heating models as well as their description of bright TR emission. Using the EUV Imaging Spectrometer on boardHinode, we observe fast upflows (vλ −10 km s−1) over multiple TR temperatures (5.8 logT 6.0) at the footpoint sites of a cool loop (logT 6.0). Prior to cool loop energizing, asymmetric flows of + 5 km s−1 and −60 km s−1 are observed at footpoint sites. These flows, speeds, and patterns occur simultaneously with both magnetic …

The modern port of Akko, Israel, has been essential to movement and trade in the eastern Mediterranean since the Hellenistic period, and used as a harbor since the Neolithic. Its many incarnations and occupations over the centuries are documented by the cultural material laying on and under the bed of the harbor, and it is an area of great fascination for historians and underwater archaeologists. One particular pivotal event in the modern history of the port, however, continues to beguile researchers.
Napoleon's failed siege of Acre (modern-day Akko), Israel in the spring of 1799 was a turning point in his …

Bridging Patient Outcome Gap For Type 2 Diabetes : Can We Bridge Physician Practices To Produce Results Achieved In Evidence-Based Lifestyle Intervention Research?, Brenda Killen Johnson
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
The United States is abounding in the prevalence and incidence of avoidable chronic diseases, and high among these diseases is type 2 diabetes. Further, according to the National Institute of Health (NIH) Common Fund, 40% of harmful health behaviors is what contributes to chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes. NIH noted there are few personalized, effective ways to inspire people to change their behaviors in the shortterm, but if done, this behavior is not sustained long-term (The NIH Common Fund, 2011). Yet, this research discovered a Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) is one of these few personalized, effective interventions that …

Copyrights In Faculty-Created Works: How Licensing Can Solve The Academic Work-For-Hire Dilemma, Glenda A. Gertz
Copyrights In Faculty-Created Works: How Licensing Can Solve The Academic Work-For-Hire Dilemma, Glenda A. Gertz
Washington Law Review
Many copyrightable works of university faculty members may be works-for-hire as defined under current U.S. copyright laws. Copyrights in works-for-hire are treated differently than copyrights in other works with respect to ownership, duration, termination rights, and requirements for transfer. Ambiguity over whether a specific faculty-created work is a work-for-hire creates legal uncertainties and potential future litigation about the initial ownership of the copyright, length of the copyright term, and termination rights which could impact all future transfers and licensing. Many universities have attempted to define ownership of faculty-created works through university policies. These policies are ineffective to alter the presumption …

Contract Stories: Importance Of The Contextual Approach To Law, Larry A. Dimatteo
Contract Stories: Importance Of The Contextual Approach To Law, Larry A. Dimatteo
Washington Law Review
How law is taught is at the center of the debate over the need to change legal education to better prepare students for a difficult and changing marketplace for legal services. This Article analyzes the benefits of using “stories” to teach law. The stories to be discussed relate to contract law: this Article asks whether they can be used to improve the method and content of teaching law. The ruminations offered on teaching contract law, however, are also relevant to teaching other core, first-year law courses.
