Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Congenital disorders of glycosylation are a group of metabolic disorders with an expansive and highly variable clinical presentation caused by abnormal glycosylation of proteins and lipids. Dolichol kinase (DOLK) catalyzes the final step in biosynthesis of dolichol phosphate (Dol-P), which is the oligosaccharide carrier required for protein N-glycosylation. Human DOLK deficiency, also known as DOLK-CDG or CDG-Im, results in a syndrome that has been reported to manifest with dilated cardiomyopathy of variable severity. A male neonate born to non-consanguineous parents of Palestinian origin presented with dysmorphic features, genital abnormalities, talipes equinovarus, and severe, refractory generalized seizures. Additional multi-systemic manifestations developed …

STEM fields in the US continue to be dominated by people whose cultural backgrounds are White, English-speaking, and middle class (National Academy of Engineering and National Research Council, 2009). Many reasons have been offered to explain this phenomenon: Students’ backgrounds may include worldviews, beliefs, and communicative practices that do not cohere with those practiced in STEM classrooms (Aikenhead & Jegede, 1999; Lee, 1999); instructional materials may present STEM fields as a-cultural, decontextualized practices with no evident connection to students’ lives and communities, such as the routine completion of numerical exercises (O’Halloran, 2005); students’ identities—shaped in part by their desired life …

Intergenerational Mobility Across Three Generations In The United States From 1880-1920, Amber Schrubey Dec 2013

Intergenerational Mobility Across Three Generations In The United States From 1880-1920, Amber Schrubey

All Theses

This thesis studies the transmission of human capital across generations. Intergenerational mobility explains the link between parent and child outcomes and is analyzed in this study using the human capital transmission models of Becker and Tomes (1986, 1979) and Solon (2012); and the child labor and school attendance model of Orazem and Funnarsson (2004). Data for this study comes from the IPUMS Linked Representative Sample years 1880-190 where school attendance and occupation were analyzed for the primary linked male as well as their father, mother spouse, and children. Analysis of the data suggests significant determinants of a child attending school …

Brave New World Reloaded: Advocating For Basic Constitutional Search Protections To Apply To Cell Phones From Eavesdropping And Tracking By Government And Corporate Entities, Mark Berrios-Ayala Dec 2013

Brave New World Reloaded: Advocating For Basic Constitutional Search Protections To Apply To Cell Phones From Eavesdropping And Tracking By Government And Corporate Entities, Mark Berrios-Ayala

HIM 1990-2015

Imagine a world where someone’s personal information is constantly compromised, where federal government entities AKA Big Brother always knows what anyone is Googling, who an individual is texting, and their emoticons on Twitter. Government entities have been doing this for years; they never cared if they were breaking the law or their moral compass of human dignity. Every day the Federal government blatantly siphons data with programs from the original ECHELON to the new series like PRISM and Xkeyscore so they can keep their tabs on issues that are none of their business; namely, the personal lives of millions. Our …

What You Like In Design Use To Correct Bad-Smells, Marouane Kessentini, Rim Mahaouachi, Khaled Ghedira

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Over the past decades, many techniques and tools have been developed to support maintenance activities in order to improve software quality. One of the most efficient ones is software refactoring to eliminate bad smells. A majority of existing work propose "standard" refactoring solutions that can be applied by hand for each kind of defect. However, it is difficult to prove or ensure the generality of these solutions to any kind of bad-smells or software codes. In this paper, we propose an approach to correct bad smells using well-designed code. We use genetic algorithms to generate correction solutions defined as a …

Connecting The Dots: Understanding Migration In The Context Of Other Periods Of The Annual Cycle, Kristina Lee Paxton Dec 2013

Connecting The Dots: Understanding Migration In The Context Of Other Periods Of The Annual Cycle, Kristina Lee Paxton

Dissertations

Migration is a fundamental characteristic of the life history of many organisms. Large-scale seasonal movements expose migratory species to an array of differing environmental conditions such that the ecology, behavior, and life history strategies of migratory species must balance selection pressures associated with each phase of the annual cycle. Therefore, scientists increasingly realize that to understand the ecology of a migratory species in any one phase of the annual cycle requires an understanding of how other phases may interact with and influence the period of interest. That said, following individuals throughout the year poses a serious challenge.

The focus of …

Relative Value Iteration For Average Reward Semi-Markov Control Via Simulation, Abhijit Gosavi Dec 2013

Relative Value Iteration For Average Reward Semi-Markov Control Via Simulation, Abhijit Gosavi

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper studies the semi-Markov decision process (SMDP) under the long-run average reward criterion in the simulation-based context. Using dynamic programming, a straightforward approach for solving this problem involves policy iteration; a value iteration approach for this problem involves a transformation that induces an additional computational burden. In the simulation-based context, however, where one seeks to avoid the transition probabilities needed in dynamic programming, value iteration forms a more convenient route for solution purposes. In this paper, hence, we present (to the best of knowledge for the first time) a relative value iteration algorithm for solving average reward SMDPs via …

Tsehootsooidi Baa Hane: Emergent Oral Histories From A Navajo Community Based Oral History Project In Ft. Defiance, Az, Gwendolyn W. Saul

Anthropology ETDs

This dissertation research is based on a community oral history project about Tséhootsooi or Fort Defiance, Arizona, a predominantly Navajo community. Colonial historical narratives of Fort Defiance selectively focus on the non-Navajo institutions that developed within the community: hospital, boarding school, and trading posts; in response, local residents oral histories challenge settler colonial narratives and speak to the events and places that make this community significant to Navajo history. Through the theoretical lens of decolonization and critical indigenous theory, my research addresses Navajo historical representation, the production of settler colonial narratives and community residents' efforts to assert sovereignty through Navajo …

Minimal Medium For Optimal Growth And Lipid Production Of The Microalgae Scenedesmus Dimorphus, Colin Welter, Jacob Schwenk, Bahar Kanani, John Van Blargan, Joanne M. Belovich Dec 2013

Minimal Medium For Optimal Growth And Lipid Production Of The Microalgae Scenedesmus Dimorphus, Colin Welter, Jacob Schwenk, Bahar Kanani, John Van Blargan, Joanne M. Belovich

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

The culture of Scenedesmus dimorphus at the laboratory scale has often been in standard microalgae media, such as 3N-Basal Bold medium (3N-BB), which contains 15 different chemicals. Given the extremely tight profit margins of large-scale production of biofuel from microalgae, it is important to identify the minimally sufficient quantities of nutrients necessary to maximize lipid productivity. The individual and interactive effects of six groupings of the components of 3N-BB medium on growth rate, lipid content, and total biomass yield of S. dimorphus were determined. Trace metal and vitamin concentrations were reduced to 1/6 the level of 3N-BB medium without adversely …

Nanta Hosh Chahta Immi? (What Are Choctaw Lifeways?): Cultural Preservation In The Casino Era, Sean Everette Gantt Dec 2013

Nanta Hosh Chahta Immi? (What Are Choctaw Lifeways?): Cultural Preservation In The Casino Era, Sean Everette Gantt

Anthropology ETDs

This dissertation investigates the long-term impacts of tribal economic development programs on the cultural preservation efforts of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians (MBCI). Since the 1970s the Mississippi Choctaw have initiated many different economic enterprises ranging from manufacturing plants to resort development, owning and operating a diversified portfolio of manufacturing, service, retail, and tourism enterprises. This history of engaging with western business models offers a unique perspective for analyzing the long-term effects of these practices on a tribal community. My work with the MBCI engages a long debate over the use of capitalist business models in tribal economic development …

Simultaneous Energy Harvesting And Vibration Control Of Tall Buildings Using Electricity-Generating Tuned Mass Dampers, Xiudong Tang Dec 2013

Simultaneous Energy Harvesting And Vibration Control Of Tall Buildings Using Electricity-Generating Tuned Mass Dampers, Xiudong Tang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Tall buildings, slender towers and long-span bridges are very susceptible to dynamic load from wind, and consequently vibrations are persistent in these civil structures during daily operation, which are serious concerns to both engineers and architects for the protection of the structure safety and occupant comfort. In order to mitigate the vibration, different approaches have been proposed, among which Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs) are one of the most preferable and have been widely used in practice. Instead of dissipating the vibration energy into heat waste via the viscous damping element, we proposed an innovative structural vibration control method in this …

Task Driven Geometric Synthesis Of Planar And Spherical Mechanisms, Ping Zhao Dec 2013

Task Driven Geometric Synthesis Of Planar And Spherical Mechanisms, Ping Zhao

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation deals with the classical problem of designing planar and spherical mechanisms for motion generation from a new, task driven perspective. The field of mechanism synthesis dates back to the days of Industrial Revolution and the traditional approach to the problem involves two major steps: type synthesis and dimensional synthesis, where the former deals with the selection of the joint types as well as the topology of a mechanism, and the latter aims at finding the link dimensions of the mechanism. The problem of dimensional synthesis lends itself naturally to mathematical treatment and thus became a highly developed field. …

Eliminate State Tax On Trust Income: A Comprehensive Update On Planning With Incomplete Gift Non-Grantor Trusts, Kevin R. Ghassomian Dec 2013

Eliminate State Tax On Trust Income: A Comprehensive Update On Planning With Incomplete Gift Non-Grantor Trusts, Kevin R. Ghassomian

ACTEC Law Journal

Private letter rulings dating back to 2001 affirm various tax attributes of incomplete gift non-grantor trusts, known popularly as "DING Trusts," which have been used by taxpayers to relocate investments from high-tax states to no-tax states. In 2007, the Internal Revenue Service questioned the integrity of its rulings on the DING Trust and cast doubt on its continuing viability for tax planning purposes. After nearly six years of indecision, a flurry of favorable new rulings was released in March of 2013, restoring widespread confidence in the DING Trust as an option for taxpayers seeking relief from rising income tax rates. …

State Taxation Of Trusts And Their Beneficiaries When There Are Multiple State Contacts, John Mcgown Jr. Dec 2013

State Taxation Of Trusts And Their Beneficiaries When There Are Multiple State Contacts, John Mcgown Jr.

ACTEC Law Journal

This article examines the state income taxation of testamentary trusts and individual trust beneficiaries when there are multiple state contacts. For matters of illustration, the focus is on states comprising the Northwest Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, and Utah. Since three of these states have no individual income tax, essence of the inquiry is limited to the state income tax systems of Idaho, Utah, Montana, and Oregon. Although the focus is on states in the Northwest, the concept applies nationwide. Before moving on to an examination of the state taxation topic, a review of the basic federal system of …
