The Effects Of An Energy Drink Containing Caffeine On Maximal Exercise Performance, Kandice Reed Dec 2013

The Effects Of An Energy Drink Containing Caffeine On Maximal Exercise Performance, Kandice Reed

Kinesiology Student Research - Archive

INTRODUCTION: Consuming energy drinks before exercising has become popular among young adults. Most people consume energy drinks to increase their exercise intensity and duration. Investigations have been performed to analyze the effects of the caffeine from various energy drinks on exercise performance. During maximal exercise performance, heart rate, Rate of Perceived Exertion, and systolic blood pressure increase linearly with exercise time and workload. Diastolic blood pressure generally, changes very little with increasing exercise intensity. PURPOSE: The purpose of this research study was to examine the effect that caffeine in an energy drink has on maximal exercise performance. METHODS: Five male, …

The Comparison Of Vertical Jump Height Between Gender And Body Fat Percentage, Allison Jack Dec 2013

The Comparison Of Vertical Jump Height Between Gender And Body Fat Percentage, Allison Jack

Kinesiology Student Research - Archive

INTRODUCTION: Vertical jump height is seen as a muscle performance test that indicates power and force production. It is a kinematic measure used to determine the differences between males and females based on their frontal plane hip angle. Along with different hip angles, males also have greater leg girths than females that could be an anthropometric measurement that influences power production. Males generally have a greater vertical jump height than females with arm swing because of their upper body strength, which influences power production. This is an important factor when determining training program and types of exercises because males and …

Effects Of Dynamic Vs Static Warm-Ups On Athletic Performance In Youth, Morgan Melton Dec 2013

Effects Of Dynamic Vs Static Warm-Ups On Athletic Performance In Youth, Morgan Melton

Kinesiology Student Research - Archive

INTRODUCTION: A typical warm-up involves some form of stretching depending upon the activity being performed. Stretches can be either dynamic (meaning they involve motion) or static (meaning they involve no motion). Dynamic stretches affect dynamic flexibility and static stretches affect static flexibility (and dynamic flexibility to some degree). Static stretches are designed to hold a position for a joint/muscle that is minimally challenging. Dynamic movement stretches are designed to take a joint/muscle through a challenging and repetitive motion, moving a body part farther with each repetition. Research over the benefits and risks of static and dynamic stretching protocols during warming …

This study looks at the acute effects of submaximal exercise on a person’s mental capabilities. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to see whether submaximal exercise has any positive or negative effects on cognitive function. METHODS: Six men (M; age 35.2 ± 13.7 yrs.) and 4 women (W; age 42.3 ± 21.3 yrs.) volunteered to participate in this study that was conducted at the University …

The Effects Of L-Carnitine Supplementation On Body Weight, Body Fat Percentage And Fat Metabolism, Mohamed Abdurahman Dec 2013

The Effects Of L-Carnitine Supplementation On Body Weight, Body Fat Percentage And Fat Metabolism, Mohamed Abdurahman

Kinesiology Student Research - Archive

INTRODUCTION: L-carnitine is a nutritional ergogenic aid. Long chain fatty acids are a major source of energy at rest and during exercise for the body. L-carnitine is an enzyme that transports these fatty acids to the mitochondria for beta oxidation. It has been theorized that by increasing L-carnitine availability, fat oxidation will be increased within the body and glycogen can be spared, thus, increasing aerobic endurance capacity. Previous studies have shown mixed results. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether 10 days of L-carnitine supplementation in a recreationally active college-aged sample would result in increased fat metabolism. …

Chc-Tscm: A Trustworthy Service Composition Method Based On An Improved Chc Genetic Algorithm, Cao Buqing, Liu Jianxun, Xiaoqing Frank Liu, Li Bing, Zhou Dong

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Trustworthy service composition is an extremely important task when service composition becomes infeasible or even fails in an environment which is open, autonomic, uncertain and deceptive. This paper presents a trustworthy service composition method based on an improved Cross generation elitist selection, Heterogeneous recombination, Cataclysmic mutation (CHC) Trustworthy Service Composition Method (CHC-TSCM) genetic algorithm. CHC-TSCM firstly obtains the total trust degree of the individual service using a trust degree measurement and evaluation model proposed in previous research. Trust combination and computation then are performed according to the structural relation of the composite service. Finally, the optimal trustworthy service composition is …

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The spined soldier bug, Podisus maculiventris (Say), is an important biological control agent of agricultural and forest pests; and it preys on eggs and larvae of lepidopteran and coleopteran species. Genetic variability among field samples collected from Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Florida and established laboratory colonies was examined using Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism-Polymerase Chain Reaction (AFLP-PCR). Four AFLP primer pairs generated a total of 340 molecular markers for evaluation. Results from Analysis of Molecular Variance showed that the majority of the genetic variation occurred within populations (individuals from each sample site). Nei’s method indicated reduced genetic diversity in laboratory populations compared …

Tiers 2 & 3 Intervention: Behavior Contracting, Jenna Strahun, Ann O'Connor, Reece L. Peterson Dec 2013

Tiers 2 & 3 Intervention: Behavior Contracting, Jenna Strahun, Ann O'Connor, Reece L. Peterson

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

Conclusion

The research on behavior contracts suggests that the procedure is a positively oriented intervention for students with problematic and disruptive behaviors. Behavior contracts are also a tool in which students can generate input in deciding their own goals and rewards for academic and behavioral performance. In addition, behavior contracts are often a smaller element of a larger intervention package that is used to gain compliance and reward the student for adhering to and participating in the intervention. Although much of the research on behavior contracts is outdated and uses small participant sample sizes, behavior contracts may serve to increase …

Proteomic Profiling Of Burkholderia Cenocepacia Clonal Isolates With Different Virulence Potential Retrieved From A Cystic Fibrosis Patient During Chronic Lung Infection., Siobhan Mcclean, Máire Callaghan, Jean Tyrrell, Isabelle Sa Correia

Articles

Respiratory infections with Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc) bacteria in cystic fibrosis (CF) are associated with a worse prognosis and increased risk of death. In this work, we assessed the virulence potential of three B. cenocepacia clonal isolates obtained from a CF patient between the onset of infection (isolate IST439) and before death with cepacia syndrome 3.5 years later (isolate IST4113 followed by IST4134), based on their ability to invade epithelial cells and compromise epithelial monolayer integrity. The two clonal isolates retrieved during late-stage disease were significantly more virulent than IST439. Proteomic profiling by 2-D DIGE of the last isolate recovered …

Appendix: Thoughts On John Evans And Sand Creek, Gary L. Roberts

John Evans Study Report

Apart from political rivalry, there was little reason to oppose John Evans as governor of Colorado. He was a success by almost any standard one chose to apply. He was a self-made man, a son of the Middle West. He grew up in a Quaker family in Indiana, and although he converted to Methodism later, Protestant evangelism was a central feature of his character and experience. As a young man, he set his goals high—to build a city, to found a college, to create a fortune, to become a governor, to be elected to the United States Senate, and to …

The Seat-Belt Defense In Georgia, Jacob E. Daly Dec 2013

The Seat-Belt Defense In Georgia, Jacob E. Daly

Mercer Law Review

For a doctrine of common-law origin, the seat-belt defense is a relatively youthful fifty years old. Credit for the first use of this defense has been attributed to the defendant in Stockinger v. Dunisch, a 1964 case in Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, in which the plaintiff's damages were reduced by 10% based on the jury's finding that she was negligent for failing to use a seat belt. Despite this initial success, most states have rejected the defense, some legislatively and others judicially, and therefore exclude evidence of a plaintiffs failure to use an available seat belt. The Georgia Court of …

Insurance, Dean A. Calloway

Mercer Law Review

This survey period, from June 1, 2012 through May 31, 2013, proved eventful. Over the past year, state and federal courts in Georgia had occasion to interpret key provisions of Georgia's Insurance Code, address novel issues of first impression, and resolve disputes with significant policy implications for Georgia's insurance industry.

The following are among the more notable developments: (1) the Georgia Supreme Court formally extended application of the rule in State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co. v. Mabry (the Mabry rule), which is the requirement that an insurer compensate an insured for his vehicle's diminished value resulting from an automobile …

Loss Of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor A (Vegfa) Isoforms In The Testes Of Male Mice Causes Subfertility, Reduces Sperm Numbers, And Alters Expression Of Genes That Regulate Undifferentiated Spermatogonia, Ningxia Lu, Kevin M. De Avila, Debra T. Clopton, William E. Pohlmeier, Vanessa M. Brauer, Renee M. Mcfee, John S. Weber, Napoleone Ferrara, David W. Silversides, Andrea S. Cupp

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) isoform treatment has been demonstrated to alter spermatogonial stem cell homeostasis. Therefore, we generated pDmrt1-Cre;Vegfa−/− (knockout, KO) mice by crossing pDmrt1-Cre mice to floxed Vegfa mice to test whether loss of all VEGFA isoforms in Sertoli and germ cells would impair spermatogenesis. When first mated, KO males took 14 days longer to get control females pregnant (P < .02) and tended to take longer for all subsequent parturition intervals (9 days; P < .07). Heterozygous males sired fewer pups per litter (P < .03) and after the first litter took 10 days longer (P < .05) to impregnate females, suggesting a more progressive loss of fertility. Reproductive organs were collected from 6-month-old male mice. There were fewer sperm per tubule in the corpus epididymides (P < .001) and fewer ZBTB16-stained undifferentiated spermatogonia (P < .003) in the testes of KO males. Testicular mRNA abundance for Bcl2 (P < .02), Bcl2:Bax (P < .02), Neurog3 (P < .007), and Ret was greater (P = .0005), tended to be greater for Sin3a and tended to be reduced for total Foxo1 (P < .07) in KO males. Immunofluorescence for CD31 and VE-Cadherin showed no differences in testis vasculature; however, CD31-positive staining was evident in undifferentiated spermatogonia only in KO testes. Therefore, loss of VEGFA isoforms in Sertoli and germ cells alters genes necessary for long-term maintenance of undifferentiated spermatogonia, ultimately reducing sperm numbers and resulting in subfertility.

Classroom Assessment Techniques In One-Shot Instruction Sessions: Balancing Teaching, Learning, And Time, Laura Westmoreland Gariepy

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2011

Librarians who teach one-shot instruction sessions often find it difficult to make time for assessment at the expense of teaching content. This session will discuss how librarians can use Classroom Assessment Techniques to not only quickly assess student learning and improve teaching, but also enhance student learning. The presentation will focus on one-shot instruction sessions; however, the principles will apply to a variety of instructional settings.

Participants will explore a variety of Classroom Assessment Techniques (CATs): exercises and activities administered in the classroom to assess student learning. As opposed to many large scale assessment instruments that demonstrate what students have …
