Accelerating Amyloid Formation By Islet Amyloid Polypeptide, Rehana Akter Dec 2013

Accelerating Amyloid Formation By Islet Amyloid Polypeptide, Rehana Akter

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP) is a 37 residues long polypeptide hormone. IAPP is co-secreted with insulin by the B-cells in the pancreas and is stored with insulin in secretory vesicles. IAPP helps to maintain glucose homeostasis in the body by regulating glucagon secretion. IAPP is one of the most amyloidogenic peptide known, and IAPP amyloid formation plays a role in type 2 diabetes. IAPP amyloid formation contributes to B-cells dysfunction and B-cells loss in islets. There is one known naturally found IAPP mutant; the serine 20 to glycine (S20G) mutant weakly increases the risk of early onset diabetes in Asian …

Anger And Memory: Misleading People Is Easy When They Are Mad, Michael J. Greenstein Dec 2013

Anger And Memory: Misleading People Is Easy When They Are Mad, Michael J. Greenstein

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Previous work has shown that different discrete emotional states (e.g. anger) affect cognitive processing differently. Anger has been associated with simplifying cognition to promote rapid action-related processes. For example, anger promotes an increased tendency to rely on preexisting cognitive biases. Such a processing style may have been advantageous in evolutionary history, but it can also lead to increased memory errors. The present study examined the simplifying effects of anger on memorial processing, using three different misinformation paradigms. The first experiment, using a classic three-phase misinformation paradigm, showed that anger directly affects memory performance and that anger increases acceptance of misinformation …

A Stochastic Segmentation Model For Recurrent Copy Number Alterations In Grouped Array-Cgh Data, Ying Cai

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

With the recent advances in high resolution microarrays and next generation sequencing, DNA copy number can now be profiled in a high throughput global manner. This has enabled the systematic study of DNA copy number alterations in tumors, as well as the profiling of inherited population-wide copy number variants. Studies of DNA copy number usually involve many samples that fall into different groups, e.g. tumor subtype or ethnic group. It is often of interest to find recurrent alterations within each group. We develop a stochastic segmentation model for detecting recurrent DNA copy number alterations in grouped array-CGH data. In our …

Characteristics Of Aerosolized Ice Forming Marine Biogenic Particles, Peter Aaron Alpert Dec 2013

Characteristics Of Aerosolized Ice Forming Marine Biogenic Particles, Peter Aaron Alpert

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Ice particles are ubiquitous in the atmosphere existing as the sole constituents of glaciated cirrus clouds or coexisting with supercooled liquid droplets in mixed-phase clouds. Aerosol particles serving as heterogeneous ice nuclei for ice crystal formation impact the global radiative balance by modification of cloud radiative properties, and thus climate. Atmospheric ice formation is not a well understood process and represents great uncertainty for climate prediction. The oceans which cover the majority of the earth's surface host nearly half the total global primary productivity and contribute to the greatest aerosol production by mass. However, the effect of biological activity on …

Physical Stress On The Body Using A Vo2 Max Test And Its Effects On Short-Term Memory In Male Students, Kimberly Alvarez

Kinesiology Student Research - Archive

Introduction. Research shows that rhythmic exercise changes in serotonin, epinephrine, norepinephrine and acetylcholine levels all affect cortical arousal and cognitive function (Potter & Keele, 2005). There are many reasons why the brain is affected during exercise. Some of these include: increased glucose, oxygen and nutrient levels to the brain. Exercise has been shown to enhance cognitive function in both short and long term memory. However, when the body is put under a large amount of physical stress, less oxygen is left in the brain due to the fact that the muscles require more of that oxygen and glucose. Does this …

The Effect Of Post Activation Potentiation On An Isometric Bicep Contraction, Nickesh Mistry Dec 2013

The Effect Of Post Activation Potentiation On An Isometric Bicep Contraction, Nickesh Mistry

Kinesiology Student Research - Archive

INTRODUCTION: Post activation Potentiation (PAP) is a new concept that has a need for further research. The performance of a muscle depends on the historic activity of that muscle. The concept of PAP is activating the muscle prior to maximal contraction. This concept works on the basis that the muscle has history of activating and, in turn, will be able to produce a greater force and torque. This idea was utilized with a biceps isometric contraction. An isometric contraction is a contraction where the joint angle as well as the muscle length is not going to change during the contraction. …
