Generation And Detection Of Defects In Metallic Parts Fabricated By Selective Laser Melting And Electron Beam Melting And Their Effects On Mechanical Properties., Haijun Gong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Application of Additive Manufacturing (AM) technology to fabricate complex three-dimensional components is one promising direction within the manufacturing industry. This approach is rapidly changing the way designers and engineers create objects with desired shape and structures. Selective Laser Melting (SLM) and Electron Beam Melting (EBM) are two common powder bed fusion processes within AM for fabricating metallic parts. In order to give designers and engineers more insights into employing AM, the quality and long-term behavior of SLM- and EBM-produced parts need to be carefully investigated. Thus, this research project aims to understand how processing parameters affect defect generation and distribution …

The Dimerization Of Parotid Secretory Protein., Diana M. Blau Dec 2013

The Dimerization Of Parotid Secretory Protein., Diana M. Blau

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

BACKGROUND: The parotid gland plays an integral part in digestion, immunity, and oral health. Parotid Secretory Protein (PSP, BPIFA2E) is an abundant protein that is secreted into the oral cavity. To understand the unique molecular mechanisms of sorting secretory proteins, structure must be studied. Protein structure is essential in understanding the basis of function. HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesize that PSP in solution forms a dimer. METHODS: Initially, parotid secretory granules were purified from rat parotid glands by using differential centrifugation and crosslinked with formaldehyde. The products were analyzed by SDS-PAGE and Western blot for PSP. Using PCR technology our gene of …

Optimization Models For Resource Allocation Under Perturbation., Dongxue Bridgeman 1986-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Optimization Models for Resource allocation are investing in how to make the best use of available but limited resources in order to achieve the best results. In strategic planning, resource allocation is a plan for using available resources, especially in the near future, to achieve the goals of the future. It is a process of allocating resources during the entire planning horizon and among the various units. Resource allocation plans can be decided by using mathematical programming. In this dissertation, the research has been focused on how to allocate resources in the uncertain environment. The mathematical programming formulations for the …

Cultural Interpretations Of Socratic And Confucian Education Philosophy., Wang Heng Dec 2013

Cultural Interpretations Of Socratic And Confucian Education Philosophy., Wang Heng

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Socrates and Confucius constitute roots of western and eastern civilization respectively, as well as represent very different cultural values and educational traditions. Because of the very limited existing literature on the study of their educational philosophies, this paper is devoted to a comparative study of their educational philosophies, attempting to examine their historical and cultural contexts and unravel their implications on the current educational practices. The method employed in the study is hermeneutics, or interpretation of the literary texts. At the same time, the study is also cross-cultural in nature. Both of the philosophers lived around 4-5th century B.C.E., but …

Neighborhoods, Social Capital And Economic Success., Sean M. Payne

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the relationship between neighborhoods, social capital and economic success. In the model developed in this research, social capital mediates the relationship between neighborhoods and economic success. Social capital represents social networks with their associated norms and resources and increases economic success by facilitating cooperation and by lowering transaction costs. Neighborhoods affect social capital through local interactions, network exclusion, social learning and social identity processes. An understudied part of these relationships is the existence of endogeneity among the key variables. Using data from the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods, this study uses structural equation modeling to …

Xbp1 And Mist1 Are Not Sufficient To Induce The Regulated Secretory Pathway In Parotid Cell Lines., Ian S. Pyle 1986-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

BACKGROUND: Xerostomia causes oral infections, tooth decay, and hindered digestion. Crucial to oral homeostasis is the salivary proteome. How these proteins are trafficked through secretory cells into secretory pathways is unknown. Abundant in the saliva is Parotid Secretory Protein (PSP), secreted through the regulated secretory pathway. HYPOTHESIS: The addition of XBP-1 and Mist1, known for differentiation marker regulation, to ParC10 cells will improve stimulated secretion of PSP. METHODS: Fusion clones were transiently or stably transfected into ParC10 cells. Media from non-stimulated and stimulated cells was harvested and luciferase activity was assayed. RESULTS: Stimulated secretion of cypridina-PSP was not significantly higher …

Expanding The Ecological Lens In Child Welfare Practice To Include Other Animals, Christina Risley-Curtiss Dec 2013

Expanding The Ecological Lens In Child Welfare Practice To Include Other Animals, Christina Risley-Curtiss

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Sixty-nine million U.S. households have companion animals and most of these families consider these animals to be family members. Research shows that children have powerful emotional connections with animals that can be both beneficial and harmful. Considerable research findings report that violence against animals often co-occurs with, indicates, or predicts other forms of family violence, including child abuse. A companion animal may be an abused child's confidante, and separation from that animal through foster care may be a source of stress and grief for that child. Child welfare agencies are slowly acknowledging some animal-human relationships, especially in regard to animal …

Humans' Bonding With Their Companion Dogs: Cardiovascular Benefits During And After Stress, Rebecca A. Campo, Bert N. Uchino Dec 2013

Humans' Bonding With Their Companion Dogs: Cardiovascular Benefits During And After Stress, Rebecca A. Campo, Bert N. Uchino

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This study examined whether having one's companion dog present during and after stress posed similar cardiovascular benefits as having a close friend present, even when the relationship quality for both the companion dog and friend was highly positive. Positive aspects of relationship quality for participants' dog and friend were not associated with one another, suggesting that these relationships exist independently. Additionally, compared to participants with a close friend present, those with their dog present had lower heart rate and diastolic blood pressure (p's < .05) while undergoing the stressors, and tended to have lower heart rate and systolic blood pressure (p's < .09) when recovering from stressors. This study indicates that even when relationship quality is similarly high for companion dogs and friends, dogs may be associated with greater reductions in owners' cardiovascular reactivity to stress, particularly if there is a potential for evaluation apprehension in the human friendships. These findings support the value of the human- companion animal relationship in promoting human welfare.

Testing Location Memory For Threatening And Nonthreatening Stimuli : Implications For Evolutionary Psychological Theorizing., Ryan Patrick Hacklander Dec 2013

Testing Location Memory For Threatening And Nonthreatening Stimuli : Implications For Evolutionary Psychological Theorizing., Ryan Patrick Hacklander

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Humans respond to the presence of threatening stimuli more rapidly than nonthreatening stimuli, a trait that some authors believe humans have been selected for. Based on this finding, it has been proposed that humans should also have superior location memory for threatening stimuli, possibly depending on whether stimuli have ancestral (e.g., snakes) or modern (e.g., guns) ecological relevance. This is herein called the Superior Location Memory for Threatening Stimuli (SLMTS) hypothesis. Some authors believe that humans possess a domain-specific adaptation that gives rise to the hypothesized memory advantage for threatening stimuli. The primary aim of this dissertation is to test …

4d Ultra-Short Te (Ute) Phase-Contrast Mri For Assessing Stenotic Flow And Hemodynamics., Mo Kadbi Dec 2013

4d Ultra-Short Te (Ute) Phase-Contrast Mri For Assessing Stenotic Flow And Hemodynamics., Mo Kadbi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Phase-contrast (PC) MRI is a non-invasive technique to assess cardiovascular blood flow. However, this technique is not accurate in the case of atherosclerotic disease and vascular and valvular stenosis due to intravoxel dephasing secondary to disturbed blood flow, flow recirculation, and turbulence distal to the narrowing, resulting in flow-related artifacts. Previous studies have shown that reducing the echo time (TE) decreases the errors associated with phase incoherence due to random motions as observed in unsteady and turbulent flows. As part of this dissertation, a novel 3-D cine Ultra-Short (UTE)-PC imaging method has been developed, and implemented to measure the blood …

Development Of Concrete Incorporating Phase Change Materials For Enhanced Energy Efficiency., Jeffrey Dee Kiesel Dec 2013

Development Of Concrete Incorporating Phase Change Materials For Enhanced Energy Efficiency., Jeffrey Dee Kiesel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Thermal mass incorporated into the building envelope has the ability to attenuate peak interior diurnal temperature fluctuations and energy flow, provide interior thermal phase shifts, and absorb surplus energy from solar gains as well as internal gains created by occupants, lighting, appliances and electronics. Heating and cooling demands can be reduced and delayed by thermally massive building envelopes. Historically, thermal mass has been achieved using thick, dense building envelopes such as stone, adobe, and mass concrete. These massive walls absorb heat during the day keeping the interior cool, then release the stored heat during the night maintaining interior comfort. The …

Amp-Activated Protein Kinase Regulation Of Myeloid Antigen Presenting Cell Activity., Kelly Casey Carroll Dec 2013

Amp-Activated Protein Kinase Regulation Of Myeloid Antigen Presenting Cell Activity., Kelly Casey Carroll

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Inflammatory and metabolic processes are critical to the survival of multicellular organisms. Inflammation and metabolism are closely linked, and many pathologies are associated with dysregulation of both of these processes, including obesity, cancer, diabetes, and atherosclerosis. Understanding the mechanistic links of inflammation and metabolism are critical for the development of treatments of metabolic and inflammatory diseases. AMP-activated protein kinase, AMPK, is a serine/threonine kinase that regulates energy homeostasis and metabolic stress in eukaryotes. When cellular ATP is low, AMPK is activated and turns off ATP-consuming anabolic pathways and turns on ATP-generating catabolic pathways. Previous work from our laboratory, as well …

Hope For People Or Hope For Cities? : Hope Vi At Liberty Green., Jelisa Clark Dec 2013

Hope For People Or Hope For Cities? : Hope Vi At Liberty Green., Jelisa Clark

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates how well the goals of local officials align with the stated goals of HOPE VI in the case of the Liberty Green development in Louisville, KY. Research revealed that there it is not necessarily the goals of decision makers that are in conflict, but the stated goals of HOPE VI themselves stand in conflict with one another. Two major components of HOPE VI are in constant tension-the impact on residents and neighborhood development goals. Evidence from this study suggests that most of the emphasis for the Liberty Green HOPE VI development revolves around neighborhood and community development …

The Marriage Effect : An Intergenerational Analysis Of Marijuana Desistance., Rachel Coonce 1983- Dec 2013

The Marriage Effect : An Intergenerational Analysis Of Marijuana Desistance., Rachel Coonce 1983-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis takes a gendered look at the criminological age-graded theory of informal social control, which posits that social bonds are strongly influential in curbing crime and deviance over the course of an individual's life. However, the theory was based on an all-male sample and is therefore not as applicable to women. It is likely that social bonds for men and women have evolved differently over the course of the last century and it is therefore the goal of this study to analyze how these changes are operating within this informal social control theory. Specifically, this paper analyzes marriage and …

Discovering Domestic Cemeteries : History, Preservation, And Education., Savannah Leigh Darr 1985- Dec 2013

Discovering Domestic Cemeteries : History, Preservation, And Education., Savannah Leigh Darr 1985-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Historic cemeteries and graveyards hold the history of the people and community in which they were built. The inscriptions, iconography, and epitaphs on gravemarkers provide insight into the family, religion, social status, and culture of those interred within a specific cemetery or graveyard. They are primary resources for historical research, as some of the information on a gravemarker may not be found anywhere else. Few scholars have recognized the value of small domestic graveyards, which typically have fewer interments and tend to be more isolated in location. For these reasons, domestic graveyards are the most fragile and their preservation is …

Privatization And Ethical Implications For Public Managers., Eric Dennison 1979- Dec 2013

Privatization And Ethical Implications For Public Managers., Eric Dennison 1979-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This Thesis is an examination of privatization and the ethical implications for public managers. It begins with a historical overview of public administration, followed by discussion of the ethical concerns. Case studies show private companies have gained an upper hand in contract negotiations, and public managers have failed to keep the public trust by offering long term contracts that result in monopolies from closed or no bid contract systems. The thesis addresses ways to improve ethical decision making through better regulations and teaching. As privatization becomes a more viable way to pay for government services, the public administrator must maintain …

Knitting As Art., Deborah Levine Dec 2013

Knitting As Art., Deborah Levine

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Hand knitting is my chosen technique for making art. Because knitting is traditionally thought of as craft, my work must overcome several obstacles in order to be valued as art. First, objects made using craft techniques and materials are often functional; even when it is not, we view them as such and value them less than art. Second, the materials and techniques used for knitting are not traditional fine art materials. This has changed; process and materials are what much contemporary art is about. Yet the bias against craft techniques and materials persists. Finally, knitting is viewed as woman's work …
