Protecting The " House Beautiful" : Eco-Consciousness In The Victorian Novel, Margaret Kennedy Dec 2013

Protecting The " House Beautiful" : Eco-Consciousness In The Victorian Novel, Margaret Kennedy

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation discusses how literary writers of the Victorian age render toxicity and toxic behaviors visible in order to encourage reform, as well as offering models of healthy environmental engagement. This literary trend reveals what I call a rising eco-consciousness, the awareness of our relationship to the environment and the exchanges between human and nonhuman. This project emphasizes the novel, which offers a rich ground of inquiry by looking at a set of characters interacting with a space over time; in other words, it focuses on how authors mapped a complete ecology into their fiction, participating in a genre that …

The Significance Of Famously Queer Writers In The Book Of Salt And The Hours, Caitlin Nelson Dec 2013

The Significance Of Famously Queer Writers In The Book Of Salt And The Hours, Caitlin Nelson

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Monique Truong's The Book of Salt and Michael Cunningham's The Hours include fictional portrayals of famous writers who interact with similarly queer protagonists. These writers, Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas and Virginia Woolf, are significant because of their reputations as iconic queer figures. Stein and Toklas are remembered as a progressive lesbian couple; Woolf is celebrated as an influential feminist writer. While initially it would seem that the protagonists and the writers could unite based on a shared queer identity, the novels imply that the hierarchies that are prevalent in these queer communities prevent the characters from becoming allies. Such …

Milton's Ideal Orator: God And Ethical Eloquence In Paradise Lost, Libby Newhouse Dec 2013

Milton's Ideal Orator: God And Ethical Eloquence In Paradise Lost, Libby Newhouse

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Modern criticism on John Milton's Paradise Lost has figured the poem as anti-rhetorical in its depictions of God, Satan, and their respective speaking styles. Such critiques, however, reveal a disregard for the rhetorical tradition and Milton's self-proclaimed humanism, and as a result reduce Milton's conception of rhetoric to a rejection of the art form. With an overview of humanist and Renaissance Christian understandings of rhetoric, this paper argues for a reconsideration of the poem's treatment of rhetoric. This paper demonstrates how Milton's depiction of the speech of God and Satan presents the reader with examples of ideal and corrupted eloquence …

Language, Science, Society, And The Line Between Human And Animal In Swift's Gulliver's Travels And Wells's The Island Of Doctor Moreau, Adam Schultheiss Dec 2013

Language, Science, Society, And The Line Between Human And Animal In Swift's Gulliver's Travels And Wells's The Island Of Doctor Moreau, Adam Schultheiss

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This thesis examines line between human and non-human animals in Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels and H.G. Wells's The Island of Doctor Moreau. Both Gulliver's Travels and The Island of Doctor Moreau examine this separation through the prism of language, societal views of animality, and biology. Looking back at the history surrounding the idea that man is separate from, and superior to, animals, one finds that it can be traced back in western tradition to the Bible, and is so ingrained in our language that it is difficult for narrators such as Lemuel Gulliver and Edward Prendick to recount their experiences …

New Development On Market Microstructure And Macrostructure: Patterns Of U.S. High Frequency Data And A Unified Factor Model Framework, Xu Dong

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In this thesis we study the problem of modeling cross-sectional volatility structure of U.S. stock market. The thesis contains two parts. In the first part we identify a particular volatility spike phenomenon, that the cross-sectional volatility is significantly stronger at every 5 minute. An empirical spike study is conducted on individual stock level by applying Lee-Mykland jump detector. By constructing spike ratio statistics, the evolving paths of this spike phenomenon is studied during the 1993 to 2009 time period. In the second part, we model the volatility structure using factor structures. Particular, we propose two approaches to build a better …

Bilingual Cognitive Control And Perspective-Monitoring In Dialogue, Karla Maria Batres Dec 2013

Bilingual Cognitive Control And Perspective-Monitoring In Dialogue, Karla Maria Batres

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The bilingual experience is fundamentally different from the monolingual experience. This is due in part to the bilingual's need to be ready to process multiple languages, while at the same time, needing to choose which language to speak while keeping in mind which language(s) the addressee understands. As a result of these demands on bilingual language comprehension and production, some have claimed that bilinguals have enhanced cognitive control when compared to monolinguals (e.g. | Bialystok, 2009). Bilinguals may have more experience in adapting to a partner's perspective (as advantage in perspective-taking has been established for bilingual children, e.g. | Goetz, …

Thomas-Charles Doctor of Philosophy in Genetics Stony Brook University 2013 Francisella tularensis is a Gram-negative, facultative intracellular bacterium and the causative agent of tularemia. Due to its high virulence, this organism has been classified as a Tier 1 select agent of bioterrorism. Regardless of the route of inoculation, the lungs, spleen, and liver are major targets of infection. Furthermore, this organism replicates to high numbers in hepatocytes, the predominant cells in the liver. Factors that mediate the uptake by and replication …

Fate Of Nitrogen During Submarine Groundwater Discharge Into Long Island North Shore Embayments, Caitlin Young Dec 2013

Fate Of Nitrogen During Submarine Groundwater Discharge Into Long Island North Shore Embayments, Caitlin Young

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Long Island Sound experiences periods of hypoxia attributed to eutrophication, but the magnitude of nitrogen contributed to surface water via submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) entering Long Island's north shore embayments is not well characterized. The coastal aquifer, where fresh groundwater mixes with saline coastal water is termed the subterranean estuary (STE). Advective flow combined with sharp salinity and dissolved oxygen gradients make the STE a zone of intense geochemical cycling. However, the fate of nitrogen during transit through Long island embayment STEs is not well understood, particularly how sediment heterogeneity influences nitrogen attenuation in discharge zones. Nitrate attenuation mechanisms, principally …

La BiografãA Difusa De Sombra Castaã±Eda: Un Anã¡Lisis Histã³Rico-Literario | La Biografía Difusa De Sombra Castañeda: Un Análisis Histórico-Literario, Mr Ramón Fernádez Dec 2013

La BiografãA Difusa De Sombra Castaã±Eda: Un Anã¡Lisis Histã³Rico-Literario | La Biografía Difusa De Sombra Castañeda: Un Análisis Histórico-Literario, Mr Ramón Fernádez

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The novelist Marcio Veloz Maggiolo is one of the most prolific Dominican writers of the last decades. In this thesis we devote our attention to the novel biografía difusa de Sombra Castañeda. We go through many of the modulation of the construct Dominican cultural identity presented in the novel. Trying to objectively define the construct Dominican Cultural identity, La biografía difusa de Sombra Castañeda explores its character's way of life, displaying the complex relationships between the dictator, Sombra Castañeda, and his subordinates, the Dominican people. We analyze these relationships with an eye on the way in which the subordinates are …

Juegos De Resignificaciã³N: Espacio, Violencia E Intimidad En Tres Novelas De Roberto Bolaã±O | Juegos De Resignificación: Espacio, Violencia E Intimidad En Tres Novelas De Roberto Bolaño, Jessica Graf

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Since the late 1990s, the work of Chilean author Roberto Bolaño (1953-2003) has attracted an ever-growing amount of critical and popular interest. His skyrocket ride to the forefront of the literary universe was ironically preceded by many years at the margins of the field, and this background clearly informs his writing. In his novels and short stories, Bolaño undertakes the representation of marginal characters whose stories unfold in restricted, liminal spaces. Bolaño reimagines these spaces to delve into a dialogue between his characters and the circumstances and forces that rule their worlds. He grants importance to his underdog figures and …

Eikonal Scattering At Strong Coupling, Melvin Eloy Irizarry-Gelpi Dec 2013

Eikonal Scattering At Strong Coupling, Melvin Eloy Irizarry-Gelpi

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The scattering of subatomic particles is a source of important physical phenomena. Decades of work have yielded many techniques for the computation of scattering amplitudes. Most of these techniques involve perturbative quantum field theory and thus apply only at weak coupling. Complementary to scattering is the formation of bound states, which are intrinsically nonperturbative. Regge theory arose in the late 1950s as an attempt to describe, with a single framework, both scattering and the formation of bound states. In Regge theory one obtains an amplitude with bound state poles after analytic continuation of a nonperturbative scattering amplitude, corresponding to a …

Uncovering The Structure Of (Super)Conformal Field Theories, Pedro Liendo Dec 2013

Uncovering The Structure Of (Super)Conformal Field Theories, Pedro Liendo

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Conformal field theories (CFTs) are of central importance in modern theoretical physics, with applications that range from condensed matter physics to particle theory phenomenology. In this Ph.D. thesis we study CFTs from two somehow orthogonal (but complementary) points of view. In the first approach we concentrate our efforts in two specific examples: the Veneziano limit of N=2 and N=1 superconformal QCD. The addition of supersymmetry makes these theories amenable to analytical analysis. In particular, we use the correspondence between single trace operators and states of a spin chain to study the integrability properties of each theory. Our results indicate that …

Translational Symmetry Breaking In Materials: First-Principles Wannier Function Study, Chia-Hui Lin Dec 2013

Translational Symmetry Breaking In Materials: First-Principles Wannier Function Study, Chia-Hui Lin

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The spatial periodicity of the crystal structure dictates the electronic band structure theory as the fundamental paradigm in solid state physics. The original translation in materials is commonly broken with an enlarged unit cell required by spontaneously developed long-range order or multiple competing periodicities. The former happens in the systems undergoing the phase transition to antiferromagnetism, charge/spin density waves or lattice distortion. The latter originates from the intrinsic arrangement of the multiple atom system or the externally introduced impurities. The emergence of the broken symmetry can significantly modify the electronic structure, shift the chemical potential, and change the electric, magnetic …

Measurement Of The Azimuthal Anisotropy For Charged Particle Production In Pb+Pb Collisions At $Sqrt{S_{Rm Nn}}$=2.76~Tev And In $P$+Pb Collisions At $Sqrt{S_{Rm Nn}}$=5.02~Tev With The Atlas Detector At The Lhc, Soumya Mohapatra Dec 2013

Measurement Of The Azimuthal Anisotropy For Charged Particle Production In Pb+Pb Collisions At $Sqrt{S_{Rm Nn}}$=2.76~Tev And In $P$+Pb Collisions At $Sqrt{S_{Rm Nn}}$=5.02~Tev With The Atlas Detector At The Lhc, Soumya Mohapatra

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In this work, detailed measurements of the $p_T$, $eta$ and centrality dependence of the flow harmonics $v_{n}$ in Pb+Pb collisions at $sqrt{s_{rm NN}}=2.76$~TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC are presented. Consistent values of harmonics $v_{2}$-$v_{6}$ are measured the via event-plane and two-particle correlation methods. Dipolar flow $v_{1}$ associated with initial dipole asymmetry is measured via two-particle correlations. The long-range correlations in the two-particle correlations such as $ridge$ and the $cone$ are shown to be accounted for by collective flow. Sizable values of the odd harmonics especially $v_{3}$ are measured that indicate significant event-by-event (EbyE) fluctuations in the initial …

Holographic Pomeron, Alexander Stoffers Dec 2013

Holographic Pomeron, Alexander Stoffers

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This thesis discusses the approach to hadronic scattering at high energies and the description of the pomeron within holographic QCD. Based on a stringy Schwinger mechanism in curved space, the pomeron emerges through the exchange of closed strings between two dipoles and yields Regge behavior for the elastic scattering amplitude. Our holographic result for the dipole-dipole cross section and the wee-dipole density in the conformal limit are shown to be identical in form to the BFKL pomeron result when the non-critical string transverse dimension is $D_\perp=3$. Thus, we have obtained an evolution for the wee-dipole density as a function of …

Behavioral Polarization And Partisan Sorting: How Identity Alignment Drives Polarized Politics, Lilliana Hall Mason Dec 2013

Behavioral Polarization And Partisan Sorting: How Identity Alignment Drives Polarized Politics, Lilliana Hall Mason

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Partisan sorting is capable of driving mass political behavior. As work in social psychology demonstrates, social identities such as party, ideology, religion and race are powerful motivators of bias, activism and anger. Furthermore, when multiple social identities come into alignment, this alignment strengthens the effects of these identities on behavior, and strengthens the cognitive and motivational bases of ingroup bias and negative emotion by increasing the perceived differences between the groups, regardless of the true differences between them. Thus the effect of political identities and the alignment between them can occur independently of the extremity or importance of an individual's …

" Don't Mask It, Fix It" : Distinguishing Characteristics Of Complementary And Alternative Medicine Patients With Chronic Pain And Their Pathways Toward Pain Resolution, Misty Amadona Curreli Dec 2013

" Don't Mask It, Fix It" : Distinguishing Characteristics Of Complementary And Alternative Medicine Patients With Chronic Pain And Their Pathways Toward Pain Resolution, Misty Amadona Curreli

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The sociological literature on pain and the body largely emphasizes the social and cultural dynamics of suffering. Within this realm, the medical institution is often paramount in regulating how pain is understood and the responses that are appropriate in managing pain. Less is known about other forms of healthcare that treat pain, namely Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). While most research explains the overall " who" of the population of CAM users, few studies address the " why" and the overall effects of using a nonconventional system of medicine. This research is aimed at discerning health beliefs and behaviors that …

Multi-Dimensional Workload Analysis And Synthesis For Modern Storage Systems, Vasily Tarasov Dec 2013

Multi-Dimensional Workload Analysis And Synthesis For Modern Storage Systems, Vasily Tarasov

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Modern computer systems produce and process an overwhelming amount of data at an increasing rates. The performance of storage hardware components, however, cannot keep up with the required speed at a practical cost. To mitigate this discrepancy, storage vendors incorporate many workload-driven optimizations in their products. Emerging applications cause workload patterns to change rapidly and significantly. One of the prominent examples is a rapid shift towards virtualized environments. Virtual machines mix I/O streams from different applications and perturb applications' access patterns. In addition, modern users demand more convenience features, such as deduplication, snapshotting, and encryption. Stringent performance requirements, changing I/O …

Lattice-Based Immersive Visualization, Kaloian Petkov Dec 2013

Lattice-Based Immersive Visualization, Kaloian Petkov

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The sizes of data are increasing at a very rapid pace in many applications, including medical visualization, physical simulations and industrial scanning. Some of this growth is not only due to the development of high resolution medical and industrial scanners, but also due to the wide availability of high performance graphics processing units (GPUs) which allow for the interactive rendering of large datasets. However, the increase of problem sizes has generally outpaced the increase of onboard GPU memory. At the same time, the resolution of the traditional display systems has not improved significantly compared to the exponential growth of computing …

Grand Multiparity: Is It Still A Risk In Pregnancy?, Andrew H. Mgaya, Siriel N. Massawe, Hussein Kidanto, Hans N. Mgaya

Faculty of Health Sciences, East Africa

Background The association of grand multiparity and poor pregnancy outcome has not been consistent for decades. Classifying grand multiparous women as a high-risk group without clear evidence of a consistent association with adverse outcomes can lead to socioeconomic burdens to the mother, family and health systems. We compared the maternal and perinatal complications among grand multiparous and other multiparous women in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.

Methods A cross-sectional study was undertaken at Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH). A standard questionnaire enquired the following variables: demographic characteristics, antenatal profile and detected obstetric risk factors as well as maternal and neonatal risk …

Species Composition And Reproductive Strategies Of Commensal Synalpheus Shrimp (Decapoda:Alpheidae) Occupying The Sponges Spheciospongia Vesparium And Spongia Sp. Of The Florida Reef Tract, Brittnee Nicole Barris Dec 2013

Species Composition And Reproductive Strategies Of Commensal Synalpheus Shrimp (Decapoda:Alpheidae) Occupying The Sponges Spheciospongia Vesparium And Spongia Sp. Of The Florida Reef Tract, Brittnee Nicole Barris

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Synalpheus shrimp species of the gambarelloides group are the only marine organisms displaying the highest level of social functioning, eusociality. Their social hierarchies are equally complex compared to the reproductive abnormalities that have been recently discovered. For instance, snapping shrimp of the genus Synalpheus were thought to be gonochoric, i.e. developing as independent sexes, until scanning electron microscopy studies revealed intersexed gonopores in several species. This project analyzed both the species composition, and accompanying reproductive structures, of Synalpheus spp. (Caridea: Alpheidae) comprised of densely aggregating communal and pair-living colonies in the Florida Keys, Florida.

Colonies of pair-living and communal Synalpheus …
