Au-Based Core-Shell Nanoparticles For Direct Formic Acid Fuel Cells, Chiajen Hsu
Au-Based Core-Shell Nanoparticles For Direct Formic Acid Fuel Cells, Chiajen Hsu
Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Unique Au/Pd core-shell nanoparticles were synthesized via galvanic replacement of Cu by Pd on hollow Au nanoparticles. Au/PtCu core-shell nanoparticles were also synthesized using this method. These core-shell nanoparticles exhibited unique electrochemical properties - the Au/Pd nanoparticles demonstrated superior electrochemical activity for formic acid oxidation and the Au/PtCu nanoparticles improved the kinetics in oxygen reduction reaction, when compared to their corresponding pure metal particles. In this dissertation, we aim at investigating catalytic abilities of these core-shell nanoparticles and understanding electrochemical reactions in direct formic acid fuel cells.Different Pd thicknesses on hollow Au nanoparticles in the core-shell configuration have been investigated. …
Grain Structure Evolution Of Tin-Based Lead-Free Solder Joints In Electronic Packaging Assembly And Its Impact On The Fatigue Reliability, Huili Xu
Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Solder is one of the main joints materials used in the electronics for decades of years. It is not only the mechanical support but also conducts the electric signals in the electronics. However, the regulation of lead content in electronic devices has driven the transition from lead-tin solder to the lead-free solder that requires lots of research to fill the knowledge gap in the lead-free solder property. At the same time, the reliability issues due to solder failure are of great interest as the miniaturization and mobilization trend of the electronic devices continues. A lot of works have been done …

Bubble Template Synthesis Of Hollow Gold Nanoparticle, Chivarat Muangphat
Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Recently, a new synthesis method for creating hollow gold nanoparticles by using electrochemically hydrogen nanobubbles as a template was discovered in our research group. Hollow gold nanoparticles with well-controlled, tunable dimension and morphology can be synthesized using various synthesis conditions. Such hollow gold nanoparticles exhibit unique optical properties that can be tuned by changing the nanoparticle structures. The objective of this study is to understand the formation mechanism of hollow gold nanoparticles synthesized using bubble template synthesis method. The synthesis process can be divided into two main processes: the formation of hydrogen nanobubble and the reduction of gold ions on …
The Effects Of Microstructure On The Mechanical Properties Of Hard Transition Metal Silicon Nitride Nanocomposite Coatings, Jessica Mooney
The Effects Of Microstructure On The Mechanical Properties Of Hard Transition Metal Silicon Nitride Nanocomposite Coatings, Jessica Mooney
Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
In this body of work, the examination of two different transition metal silicon nitride (MeSiN) systems using two different methods of physical vapor deposition (PVD) allowed for the development of a detailed understanding between the processing conditions, the micro-scale and nano-scale morphology, and the mechanical properties of the as-deposited thin film nanocomposite coatings. TiSiN coatings processed using the high-energy Arc deposition technique had hardness values of up to 33.6 GPa, and a previously unidentified (TiSi)N FCC crystalline phase, likely present due to the amounts of energy employed during coating processing, was discovered via intensive low angle X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and …

Generations Apart: Exploring The Generation Gap In Theatre, Jesus Briones
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
This thesis attempts to find relationships among three different ethnic groups (Jewish, Chinese, and Italian) presented in the following plays. First, there is an explanation of four different types of generation gaps that are discovered throughout the first play of examination, Fiddler on the Roof. There is a technology gap, a cultural gap, a religion gap, and an assimilation gap. Each of these gaps is present within Fiddler on the Roof and is varied throughout the remaining plays examined (Flower Drum Song and Over the River and Through the Woods). Each “gap” will be given an explanation and how it …

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
The field of nanomedicine has recently explored potential applications for cancer treatment ranging from drug delivery methods to cancer imaging techniques. Due to potential risks of nanomaterials affecting non-cancerous cells in the body, in vitro toxicity studies are being conducted. The nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized from potassium tetrachloroaurate (III) hydrate, potassium tetrabromoaurate (III) dihydrate, potassium tetrachloropalladate (II), and silver nitrate. NPs were synthesized using the Turkevich method or through the sodium borohydride reduction. Particles synthesized using sodium borohydride were stabilized with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The NPs under investigation were used to treat three cancer cell lines. The treated cells were …

Oxidation Of Dibenzothiophene To Dibenzothiophene Sulfone Using Tungsten (Vi) Oxide, Alejandrina Rivera
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
The oxidation of dibenzothiophene (DBT) to dibenzothiophene-sulfone has been considered as an alternate method to remove sulfur from crude oil. This study demonstrates that the oxidative desulfurization (ODS) of DBT to DBT-sulfone occurs using WO3 as a catalyst. WO3 was synthesized and characterized using X-ray diffraction to determine the phase of WO3. Each reaction was refluxed and run for four hours using WO3 as a catalyst, dibenzothiphene, and four different solvents: decahydronapthalene, n-dodecane, decalin, and dodecane. The reactions were performed at temperatures ranging from 120 oC to 150 oC. Aliquots were taken at 30 minutes for up to four hours …

The Relational Algebra Toolkit: A User-Friendly Approach To Presenting And Processing Relational Algebra Queries On The Web, Jeremy J. Miller
The Relational Algebra Toolkit: A User-Friendly Approach To Presenting And Processing Relational Algebra Queries On The Web, Jeremy J. Miller
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
Relational algebra is the mathematical basis of tools to express and optimize queries on relational data. However, there exists no convenient way to directly use, express, store, render, visualize, and execute relational algebra over the Web. Educators and practitioners are limited to creating relational algebra expressions using TeX or equation editors which cannot execute them. This work presents a solution to this issue: the Relational Algebra Toolkit (RAT). Relational data and queries are represented using purpose-built XML vocabularies, to be both machine-processable and serializable. Encoded relational algebra expressions can be rendered as parenthetical expressions and as syntax trees, translated to …

Evaluating Flexibility In International Patent Law, Sarah R. Wasserman Rajec
Evaluating Flexibility In International Patent Law, Sarah R. Wasserman Rajec
UC Law Journal
Global patent law has raced toward harmonization over the past decades. Countries with vastly different industries, values, and levels of development now offer robust patent rights with similar contours through membership in the World Trade Organization and consequent adoption of the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (“TRIPS”). However, patent law is still far from harmonized among countries or static within countries. Jurisdictions tailor their patent laws to accommodate differences between industries, unforeseen inefficiencies, and diverse views of the costs and benefits associated with offering patent rights to stimulate innovation. Prior scholarly work consists of either doctrinal analyses …

Note – The True Man & The Battered Woman: Prospects For Gender Neutral Narratives In Self-Defense Doctrines, Katelyn E. Keegan
UC Law Journal
The recent rise of controversial Stand Your Ground laws has sparked discussions on self-defense law. Comparing the new Stand Your Ground laws with another self- defense doctrine—Battered Women’s Syndrome—it becomes apparent that the law solidifies gender stereotypes by assessing when an individual is justified in using deadly force against an aggressor. “True men” are empowered to use deadly force in public without a duty to retreat, while a battered woman often must provide expert testimony on her psychological condition to prove the reasonableness of her use of deadly force in light of her severe helplessness. At their extremes, both of …

Defying Binaries: A Critical Examination Of 'Old' Versus 'New' In The Art Of Pablita Velarde And Helen Hardin, Jenna M. Kloeppel
Art & Art History ETDs
Santa Clara painter Pablita Velarde and her artist daughter, Helen Hardin, are often discussed in both popular and academic literature as being representative, respectively, of two very different artistic traditions. Velardes art is commonly viewed as very much a product of her Dorothy Dunn-trained Santa Fe Studio background, and Hardin is seen as an avant-garde, wholly innovative artistic force representative of the generation of Native artists more aligned with the anti-Studio philosophies of the Institute of American Indian Arts, which was developing as Hardin was beginning her career in painting. This thesis will examine the modes of representation that have …

Lithostratigraphic And Petrophysical Analysis Of The Middle Devonian Marcellus Shale At The Mamont Prospect, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, Ty Taylor
All Theses
The organic-rich Middle Devonian Marcellus Shale of the Appalachian basin is a rapidly developing natural gas play. Stratigraphic boundaries of the Marcellus Shale in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania were identified using geophysical logs from 10 vertical gas-producing wells in a 23 sq. km area. Gamma-ray, bulk density, and resistivity well logs were examined to assess hydrocarbon potential. Values of porosity, total organic carbon (TOC), and water saturation (SW) were derived and mapped by incorporating well-log data into Marcellus-specific formulas. Gamma-ray, penetration (minutes per foot drilled), and mud-logging gas (total gas) from 12 horizontal wells from within the study area were also …

Pavement Evaluation Of The Concrete Tie-Bars And Dowel Baskets On Irvin Cobb Drive, Us 60, Mccracken County, Ky, Brad W. Rister, Jamie Creech, Joe Whelan, Timothy R. B. Taylor
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
A 1500 Mhz. ground coupled, ground penetrating radar antenna was used to identify both the horizontal alignment and the vertical displacement of the concrete tie-bars and the transverse joint dowel bar assembles on a Portland-Cement-Concrete-Pavement (PCCP) on US 60 in McCracken County, KY. Approximately 5 lanes miles of PCCP were evaluated using the 1500 Mhz. ground coupled antenna. Results indicate that only one transverse dowel basket out of an approximate total of 1,760 were within 4.17 inches of the pavement surface. Seven transverse dowel baskets were misaligned four inches or greater from the location of the sawed joint. These areas …
