An Oop Based Four-Bar Mechanism Design And Simulation (4mds) Software, Abhijit Toravi Dec 2013

An Oop Based Four-Bar Mechanism Design And Simulation (4mds) Software, Abhijit Toravi

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Despite having been a research topic alive for a long time, various proposed solutions to planar mechanism design for the approximate motion synthesis have been non-linear in nature. In general, the algorithms proposed are computationally expensive and require dealing with the type and dimension synthesis separately. The thesis presents an interactive software tool for unified type and dimension synthesis of planar four bar mechanism and its simulation. It implements an efficient and linear algorithm that naturally extracts the geometric constraints of a motion and leads directly to the type and dimensions of a mechanism for motion generation. The software has …

This dissertation presents applications of machine learning methods to clinical data sets and development of a decision support system. Our goal is to develop machine learning methods to predict potential healthcare problems before the onset of the actual diseases. Our research involves two examples with high-dimensional data. The independent variables are selected depending on the quality of prediction, and the models will be trained on the subspaces of the training data set. We also employed feature extraction technique to the original feature space such as PCA, FCA, data transformation, etc. This projection of the original feature space to lower the …

Lipid Exchange Between Borrelia Burgdorferi And Host Cells, Jameson Thatcher Crowley Dec 2013

Lipid Exchange Between Borrelia Burgdorferi And Host Cells, Jameson Thatcher Crowley

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation examines the mechanism of transfer of B. burgdorferi-derived antigenic lipids to non-phagocytic eukaryotic cells and how the mechanism of transfer of foreign antigenic bacterial lipids could contribute to the pathogenesis of Lyme disease. Lipid rafts are structural subdomains of the plasma membrane that are primarily found in eukaryotic cells due to the presence of cholesterol and glycosphingolipids. Interestingly, the presence of these membrane subdomains is also shared with the spirochetal prokaryote B. burgdorferi. The presence of free cholesterol and cholesterol-glycolipids in B. burgdorferi creates an opportunity for lipid-lipid interactions with constituents of the lipid rafts in eukaryotic cells. …

Crystal Structure Prediction Of Compounds In The Al-O System: Alo2 And Al4o7, Yue Liu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

USPEX is the foremost Evolutionary Algorithm which calculates crystal structure through genetic algorithm. And it is using ab initio determination to contribute powerful searching in crystal structure prediction. This method enables crystal structure prediction at arbitrary P-T conditions, given just the chemical composition of the material. USPEX is interfaced with DFT or classic codes, such as VASP, SIESTA, GULP and so on. USPEX can also be used to search for materials with desired physical properties. There are already significant discoveries found by using USPEX. For instance, it has been found the 40-atom cell of MgSiO3 post-perovskite for this fixed …

Declarative And Yes/No Question Intonation In Montevideo Spanish, Deborah Silva De Araujo Dec 2013

Declarative And Yes/No Question Intonation In Montevideo Spanish, Deborah Silva De Araujo

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This study offers for the first time empirical and theoretical data on the intonation of the Spanish variety spoken in Montevideo, the capital city of Uruguay. It proposes a phonological analysis of broad focus declarative and yes/no question utterances of simple, coordinated, and subordinated sentences recorded during fieldwork in Montevideo. The analysis relies on the Autosegmental-Metrical (AM) model (Pierrehumbert 1980) and the Sp_ToBI transcription system (Beckman et al 2002, Estebas-Vilaplana and Prieto 2009). The analysis of the F0 track shows that coordinated and subordinated sentences of both declarative and yes/no question utterances were parsed into utterance-medial IP (aligned with the …

Autoworkers And The Globalizing World: Working Class Internationalism From Latin America To Deindustrializing America, 1960-1980, Michael John Murphy Dec 2013

Autoworkers And The Globalizing World: Working Class Internationalism From Latin America To Deindustrializing America, 1960-1980, Michael John Murphy

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

During the 1960s, American workers confronted new challenges at home and abroad. After more than a decade of Cold War struggles against communism in Europe, organized labor became an integral part of American foreign policy in pursuit of similar goals in developing nations. The concurrent rise of multinational corporations altered the international landscape of employment and created economic uncertainty for workers in the United States. My dissertation explores the ways rank and file autoworkers and official representatives of the United Automobile Workers (UAW) adopted the language and practice of working class internationalism to respond to these changes. I argue that …

Women In The Early Modern Dutch Atlantic World, Annette Ricciardi Dec 2013

Women In The Early Modern Dutch Atlantic World, Annette Ricciardi

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation explores the myriad ways in which women, both overseas and in the Netherlands, engaged in the early modern Dutch Atlantic world. It argues that women in the Dutch colonies around the Atlantic perimeter and at home made significant contributions to the formation and expansion of the Atlantic World because of their participation in the public sphere. Through an examination of court and church records, in addition to notarial papers, it becomes clear that women in the Dutch territories had more independence than their peers of other European maritime powers at the time, and thus were able to exert …

The Distribution, Fate And Application As Tracers Of Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (Qacs) In Sewage Impacted Estuaries., Anne Cooper Doherty

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are high production volume classes of chemicals used as surfactants and disinfectants that have been found at high levels in urban marine sediments. As sewage is the main source of QACs to such environments, they have been suggested as tracers of sewage-affected particles. Despite relatively high sediment concentrations and their unique potential to be used as sewage tracers, research on their behavior in the environment is lacking. The primary objective of this thesis was to gain new insight into the distribution and fate of QACs in sewage impacted marine environments. Additional objectives included the application of …

Metaphors Of Body And Home: A Study Of The Anatomical Illustration In 'Ma'aseh Tuviyah', Yael Levy Morantz Dec 2013

Metaphors Of Body And Home: A Study Of The Anatomical Illustration In 'Ma'aseh Tuviyah', Yael Levy Morantz

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

An illustration that compares a dissected body to a house is the subject of this thesis. The illustration opens the pathology chapter of Ma'aseh Tuviyah, a Hebrew encyclopedic manuscript, written by the Jewish physician Tobias Cohen at the turn of the eighteenth century. The body and the house are mirror images that strengthen the metaphor BODY IS HOUSE, a metaphor thoroughly developed in the text that follows the illustration. Aided by architectural terms, this metaphor was designed to assist the medical student in understanding the ailments of the body. This thesis argues that the illustration, as an adjunct to the …

The Evolution Of Cercopithecoid Locomotion: A Morphometric, Phylogenetic, And Character Mapping Approach, Ashley Daria Gosselin-Ildari Dec 2013

The Evolution Of Cercopithecoid Locomotion: A Morphometric, Phylogenetic, And Character Mapping Approach, Ashley Daria Gosselin-Ildari

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Cercopithecoidea is the superfamily within the order Primates representing Old World Monkeys. Cercopithecoids are relatively rare in the fossil record prior to the middle Miocene. However, since the PlioPleistocene, cercopithecoids have undergone a diversification making them one of most ecological diverse groups of primates today. Although cercopithecoids are ecologically and behaviorally diverse, their locomotor behavior is not considered specialized and their postcrania reflect a generalized quadrupedal locomotor repertoire. Many cercopithecoids today are considered " semi-terrestrial" meaning that they are efficient on the ground and in the trees. However, the colobines are almost exclusively arboreal and committed terrestriality is thought to …

Structural Study Of Ino80 Chromatin Remodeling Protein Complex By Cryo-Em, Won Kyun Koh Dec 2013

Structural Study Of Ino80 Chromatin Remodeling Protein Complex By Cryo-Em, Won Kyun Koh

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The human genome, comprised of ~three billion base pairs, is over six feet long when fully extended. Multiple chromatin modifying enzymes are required either to condense the DNA to fit into each nucleus that are ~ 1um in size, or to partially unravel the chromatin for readout of the genomic information. The ATP-dependent chromatin remodeler INO80 plays important roles in regulating the spacing of nucleosomes along the DNA. However, mechanism by which INO80 slides the nucleosome is still unclear. Structural studies of other chromatin remodelers have been shown to be a powerful approach to understand how these enzymes interact with …

Applications Of Multichannel Brain Array Coils In Functional Neuroimaging, Sheeba Rani Arnold Anteraper Dec 2013

Applications Of Multichannel Brain Array Coils In Functional Neuroimaging, Sheeba Rani Arnold Anteraper

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Deciphering signal from noise is a pre-requisite for making any scientific observation. Regardless of the imaging modality, any successful attempt in improving the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) brings about a wave of applications. The use of multichannel array coils in functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides increased SNR, higher sensitivity, and parallel imaging capabilities. However, their benefits remain to be systematically explored in the context of resting-state functional connectivity MRI (fcMRI). In this work, signal detectability within and between commercially available multichannel brain coils, a 32-Channel (32Ch), and a 12-Channel (12Ch) were compared at 3 Tesla, in a high-resolution …

Physical Activity And Genetics As Determinants Of Limb Bone Structure, Ian Jacob Wallace Dec 2013

Physical Activity And Genetics As Determinants Of Limb Bone Structure, Ian Jacob Wallace

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The skeleton has the capacity to adjust its structure and strength throughout life in response to loads borne during physical activity. Typically, loading promotes bone formation, retards bone loss, and ultimately enhances structure and strength. Based on this observation, many anthropologists consider it possible to deduce the physical activity levels of ancient human populations by analyzing their skeletal remains. Populations with thick, strong bones are inferred to have been very physically active, while populations with slender, fragile bones are inferred to have been more sedentary. Although the responsiveness of bone to applied loads is well documented, non- mechanical factors, particularly …

Characterizing The Lipoproteins Lprg And Lpra Towards A Better Understanding Of Lipid Transport Mechanisms In Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, Lu Bai

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Two lipoproteins, MtbLprG and MtbLprA, have been characterized as TLR2 agonists. Knockout of the lprG operon (lprG-rv1410c) results in decreased virulence of M. tb. While their importance for host-pathogen interactions has been the subject of numerous studies, the physiological functions of LprG and LprA are not known. We present here data towards elucidating the physiological functions of LprG and LprA, both in M. tb and M. smegmatis, including localization, binding affinity to respective ligands, as well as the phenotype of knockout strains, which will contribute a model for lipid transport through the cell wall. | 46 pages

A Surface Science Study Of Metal Oxides And Supported Nanoparticles For The Production Of Clean Hydrogen, John Conrad Lofaro Dec 2013

A Surface Science Study Of Metal Oxides And Supported Nanoparticles For The Production Of Clean Hydrogen, John Conrad Lofaro

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The search for alternative fuels has increased over the past decade due to a growth in energy demand and the need to reduce carbon output. Hydrogen has been seen as a potential replacement for fossil fuels, such as oil and coal. A clean source of hydrogen and can be processed via the water gas (WGS) shift reaction (H2O + CO → CO2 + H2). However, current industrial catalysts are comprised of a mixture of metal-oxides and supported nanoparticles that are often too complex to accurately elucidate reaction mechanisms. Using well defined " model systems" in …

Analysis Of The Interaction Of H-Nox With Dgc Using In Vivo Methods And Analytical Ultracentrifugation, Patryk Zielinski Dec 2013

Analysis Of The Interaction Of H-Nox With Dgc Using In Vivo Methods And Analytical Ultracentrifugation, Patryk Zielinski

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Biofilms are a naturally occurring phenomenon and are known to be a significant problem in various fields including both the industrial and health environments. Bacterial biofilms are defined as the attachment and aggregation of a community of bacteria to solid surfaces. This behavior can lead to infections via medical transplants and compromise the functionality and durability of industrial equipment. Two proteins, Heme-Nitric oxide/Oxygen (H-NOX) and di-guanylate cyclase (DGC), are known to play an important role in the regulation of biofilm formation in bacteria. These two proteins down regulate the concentration of c-di-GMP, a second messenger molecule, in a cell. Since …

Tell Me Something Good: Depression And The Social Sharing Of Positive Life Events, Rachel Eva Hershenberg Dec 2013

Tell Me Something Good: Depression And The Social Sharing Of Positive Life Events, Rachel Eva Hershenberg

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation examined the social sharing of positive life events, referred to as capitalization, among a sample of individuals with a range of current depressive symptomatology. Capitalization is an interpersonal strategy that has the potential to enhance positive emotions, build cognitive resources, and strengthen relationships. Remiss in the depression research has been an examination of responses to positive life events in an interpersonal context. Some data suggests that those with depressive symptoms may be particularly responsive to the capitalization process; other data suggests that those with greater depressive symptoms may be less likely to engage in this behavior and might …

The Medicalization Of Gender And Sexuality: Women's Responses To " Female Sexual Dysfunction", Amy Braksmajer Dec 2013

The Medicalization Of Gender And Sexuality: Women's Responses To " Female Sexual Dysfunction", Amy Braksmajer

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Scholarly interest in the social construction of female sexual dysfunction has tended to focus on the medicalization of women's sexual desires and behaviors, which can be traced back to the early 1970's with the publication of Masters and Johnson's Human Sexual Inadequacy. Not much is known, however, in regards to the ways in which women make sense of sexual problems as " dysfunctions" , or the ways in which medical interpretations of these problems affect the ways in which women experience gender, sexuality, and their bodies. In this qualitative study, I am interested in understanding: a) how, and to what …

Dance Of Anguish: Poetic Texts From 1920s Korea, Wayne De Fremery Dec 2013

Dance Of Anguish: Poetic Texts From 1920s Korea, Wayne De Fremery

Barowsky School of Business | Faculty Scholarship

As bibliographer D. F. McKenzie has suggested, the book is an expressive form. This means that “the fine details of typography and layout, the material signs which constitute a text” (McKenzie 1999, 25) signify. Therefore, the “human motives and interactions that texts involve at every stage of their production, transmission, and consumption” (McKenzie 1999, 15) are also implicitly part of what a text means. The objectives and relations McKenzie describes are those of authors, of course, but also those of the whole spectrum of people involved in a text’s creation and dissemination—what McKenzie has termed the sociology of a text. …

Imaging Coherent Electronic Motion In Atoms By Ultrafast Electron Diffraction, Hua-Chieh Shao, Anthony F. Starace Dec 2013

Imaging Coherent Electronic Motion In Atoms By Ultrafast Electron Diffraction, Hua-Chieh Shao, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

Ultrafast electron diffraction from time-varying coherent electronic states of the H atom is analyzed theoretically. This theoretical analysis identifies the conditions necessary to obtain time-resolved measurements. Electron diffraction from coherent electronic states exhibiting breathing and wiggling modes of electronic motion are simulated numerically in order to demonstrate the capability of attosecond electron pulses to image electron dynamics. The scattering patterns and their temporal behaviors are shown to differentiate the two kinds of target electronic motion. Moreover, our simulations show that inelastic processes contribute significantly to the diffraction patterns. Thus, although the diffraction patterns clearly distinguish different modes of target electronic …

Pip: Privacy And Integrity Preserving Data Aggregation In Wireless Sensor Networks, Vimal Kumar, Sanjay Kumar Madria Dec 2013

Pip: Privacy And Integrity Preserving Data Aggregation In Wireless Sensor Networks, Vimal Kumar, Sanjay Kumar Madria

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

With the exponential rise of pervasive computing applications, data privacy has become much more of an important issue than before. When data is aggregated at each hop in a sensor network, it becomes harder to protect its privacy. A number of privacies preserving data aggregation algorithms have recently appeared for wireless sensor networks (WSNs), very few of them however also address the issue of data integrity along with privacy. Data privacy and integrity are two contrasting objectives to achieve in general. In a privacy preserved data aggregation, it becomes easier for an attacker to inject false data hence, we suggest …

Efficient Privacy-Preserving Range Queries Over Encrypted Data In Cloud Computing, Bharath K. Samanthula, Wei Jiang Dec 2013

Efficient Privacy-Preserving Range Queries Over Encrypted Data In Cloud Computing, Bharath K. Samanthula, Wei Jiang

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

With the growing popularity of data and service outsourcing, where the data resides on remote servers in encrypted form, there remain open questions about what kind of query operations can be performed on the encrypted data. In this paper, we focus on one such important query operation, namely range query. One of the basic security primitives that can be used to evaluate range queries is secure comparison of encrypted integers. However, the existing secure comparison protocols strongly rely on the encrypted bit-wise representations rather than on pure encrypted integers. Therefore, in this paper, we first propose an efficient method for …
