The 20th century was a period of turmoil for the people of Ireland. After fighting for independence in the first quarter of the century, Ireland was partitioned into two separate entities, the Irish-controlled Republic of Ireland in the South and the British-controlled Northern Ireland in the Northeast. The middle half of the century saw bloody violence and sectarian fighting between the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and the various Unionist paramilitary forces in Northern Ireland. Face recognition is very useful in many applications, such as safety and surveillance, intelligent robot, and computer login. The reliability and accuracy of such systems will be influenced by the variation of background illumination. Multi-symbology barcode location is a practical and challenging issue. Image-based barcode recognition techniques are robust and extendable approaches for reading versatile one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) barcodes. Most methods may work for a single 1D or 2D barcode or rely on a unique pattern to locate a single 1D or 2D barcode. This work proposes a general localization framework for extraction of real barcodes under complex backgrounds when multiple symbology types exist in the same snapshot for 1D barcodes, 2D barcodes, or both. In this paper, efficient physics models are presented for simulating ship hydrostatic motions caused by sea waves, cargoes and flooding water. Based on the stability theory of ship, a ship is regarded as a floating body whose stability is indicated by its gravity, buoyancy and meta centers. These stability centers are influenced by cargoes, sea waves, flooding water and the ship mass. Variations of these stability centers create torques and forces which cause the ship to heave, pitch and roll. The feeding response of Venus flytraps (Dionaea muscipula) is widely studied, and many studies have considered the selectivity of prey capture in D. muscipula (Lichtner and Williams, 1977; Hutchens and Luken, 2009). The consumption rate of an organism relative to the abundance or availability of its food is known as that organism's functional response (Jeschke et al., 2004). In this study, a functional response curve will be constructed for D. muscipula based on its response to increasing availability of small prey in the laboratory. The intent of my honors thesis is to conduct a comparative analysis of seed banks between Carolina bays of high and low human impact. My study will use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to characterize types of land use within Carolina bays and in 250-m buffer zones. Representative bays from high-impact and low-impact classifications will be chosen as study sites, and seed bank samples will be collected and germinated. While it is beyond the scope of my study to identify a mechanism by which it occurs, I will investigate the presence of a relationship between land use and bay vegetation biodiversity.

Assessments of local shark stocks are vital to understand population trends and their causes. Local data are incomplete despite many studies over many years. The first published study listed all of the shark species found off the coast of SC (Bearden 1965). Following Bearden's work, Schwartz (2003) used a 30 year data set to describe the elasmobranchs found in NC and SC. We investigated the seasonal patterns of Amazonian forest photosynthetic activity, and the effects thereon of variations in climate and land-use, by integrating data from a network of ground-based eddy flux towers in Brazil established as part of the 'Large-Scale Biosphere Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia' project. We found that degree of water limitation, as indicated by the seasonality of the ratio of sensible to latent heat flux (Bowen ratio) predicts seasonal patterns of photosynthesis. In equatorial Amazonian forests (5° N-5° S), water limitation is absent, and photosynthetic fluxes (or gross ecosystem productivity, GEP) exhibit high or increasing levels of photosynthetic activity …

This study analyzes the inter-annual variability (IAV) of simulations of 21 different land surface model formulations, driven by meteorological conditions measured at 8 flux towers, located in rain forest, forest-savanna ecotone and pasture sites in Amazonia, and one in savanna site in Southeastern Brazil. Annual totals of net ecosystem exchange (NEE) of carbon and evapotranspiration (ET), measured and simulated by each model for each site-year, were compared in terms of year-to-year variability and possible relation to climate drivers. Balance training using gaming systems, called exergaming, is a rising trend for reducing fall risk in older individuals. Previous studies have conducted research pertaining to gaming systems and traditional balance training, however there is a lack of comparison between gaming systems. Carnivorous plants are able to attract, trap, and digest insects. Different types of traps target different prey. There are sticky traps, pitfall traps, and active steel traps (Gibson, 1991). Although this may seem to be a rare modification it appears that there are six origins of carnivorous plants in different groups of angiosperms (Albert et al., 1992). Muscular dystrophy is very common among broilers, which are chickens raised specifically for meat production. When dystrophic chickens are mated, or when normal and dystrophic chickens are mated, it is very likely that at least fifty percent of the clutch will end up with muscular dystrophy since it is inherited as a co-dominant disorder (Fujiwara et al., 2009). For my study, eggs were obtained from a local farm, and allowed to hatch. Among these hatchings were chicks who exhibited some traits of muscular dystrophy. Burnout rates are steadily increasing among physicians all over the world (Sime, Quick, Saleh, & Martin, 2007). Burnout is defined as high levels of emotional exhaustion (EE), high levels of depersonalization (DP), and low levels of personal achievement (PA) (Ionita, Copotocan, & Copotoiu, S., 2011). Wuhanlinigobius, a new genus of Hemigobius generic group would been established and assigned from Mugilogobius polylepis Wu and Ni, 1985. Mugilogobius polylepis has been regarded as belong to genus Eugnathogobius based on lacking head pores and representing longitudinal sensory papillae in previous taxonomic study. However, we compared the osteological features of Mugilogobius polylepis Wu and Ni, 1985 and Eugnathogobius microps Smith, 1931 as well as the molecular phylogenetic analysis based on the mtDNA ND5, Cyt-b genes and D-loop region. Coastal areas are the first marine systems being impacted by anthropogenic pollution and eutrophication. Organic matter poses a particularly negative impact on the environment due to its oxygen depleting and eutrophying effects. Shenzhen Bay mudflat contains rich organic matter. Here, we compare changes of polychaete assemblage parameters on seasonal data obtained from a Shenzhen Bay mudflat in a three-year study. The results based on the seasonal and spatial variations of polychaete species number, density and biomass, ShannonWiener diversity index, evenness index and richness index confirmed that high organic matter content impacted their distribution. In this study, observations and aerial surveys were conducted in delineating the heat island patterns. Concurrent datasets from the satellite-borne MODIS sensor and helicopter-borne thermal IR imager were employed. The sampling data in this experiment covered an area exceeding 100 km2 in Taiwan’s western plain. A more than 10°C temperature difference between different sampling points could be observed in this area. The relationship between the surface temperature and vegetation index values was also showed. Results showed that the surface canopy and the air humidity together played an important role in the surface temperature increase.

The shallow water squat lobster genus Lauriea Baba, 1971 is reported for the first time from Taiwan. The three specimens collected from Kenting, southern Taiwan belong to Lauriea siagiani Baba, 1994. Lauriea siagiani is very distinctive by its striking coloration and having dense long plumose setae on the body. Its report in Taiwan fills the gap of geographical distribution of this species from Indonesia to Japan.

New Records Of Deep-Sea Blind Lobsters (Crustacea: Decapoda: Polychelidae) From Taiwan, Su-Ching Chang, Shane T. Ahyong, Tin-Yam Chan

The deep-sea lobster family, Polychelidae Wood-Mason, 1875, contains six genera and 38 species worldwide, of which nine species in three genera have been reported from Taiwan. Herein we present four new records of Polychelidae from Taiwan, namely Pentacheles validus A. Milne-Edwards, 1880, Stereomastis surda (Galil, 2000), Willemoesia forceps A. Milne-Edwards, 1880, and W. leptodactyla (Thomson, 1873). A total of 13 species in four genera of Polychelidae are now known from Taiwan; a key to the species is provided.

Long-term advanced very-high-resolution radiometer (AVHRR) data with a resolution of 0.04° provided clearer views of sea surface temperature (SST) warming and variation associated with ENSO in the Taiwan Strait (TS) during wintertime (1981-2013). Over the 33 year period, the spatial average of winter SST warming in the TS reached to 3°C. From 1981- 2001, the SST exhibited an increasing trend, with the fastest warming taking place from 1991-2001 after which it seemed to pause. From 2002-2012, the SST showed a cooling trend (-0.08°C/yr). Spatial variation of the warming was distinct, with the highest values concentrated in the winter fronts region, …

Two new gobiid species of Vanderhorstia Smith, 1959 which have been recently collected from Japanese waters. Both new species are distributed in marine coral reef habitats off the Ryukyus, Japan. Vanderhorstia cyanolineata sp. nov. can be well distinguished from congeners by the following unique combination of features: (1) fin ray counts: second dorsal fin rays I/12, anal fin rays I/12; pectoral fin rays 18-19; (2) fin shape: low first dorsal fin with about equal 3rd to 5th spinous rays, caudal fin large and middle rays as sword-like projection; (3) scales: LR 50-52; TR 18; and (4) its own specific colouration …

We investigated the diel cycle mechanism of a tide-pool ciliate community of the northeastern coast of Taiwan. The investigation was conducted on 17th-18th June (typical summer weather), and on 23th -24th July 2013 (10 days after a typhoon). In June, the tide-pool ecosystem was an independent and the excystment of ciliates in the tide-pool caused a dramatic increase in population abundance, as well as composition change. In July, there was no significant difference between the species composition in the tide-pool and that in the surrounding coastal water. The 70 different samples of larval fish morphotypes have been successfully amplified and sequenced in detail via PCR amplification for the partial sequences of mtDNA CO I gene. The overall genetic similarities ranged from 83% to 100%. Totally 26 different fish species can be detected and analyzed. There are 16 fish species can be identified into specific level. However, there are remaining 12 species can be expected just into suggested fish generic level. Apparently, two major groups of taxa would be the members of Gobiidae and Apogonidae which comprised 50% of total species diversity, and also comprised 67% of total …

An illness that was once often fatal, now represents both an acute life threatening illness and a chronic condition.
