In the past century, seagrasses have experienced massive die off episodes in what has been collectively referred to as “wasting disease.” Researchers generally agree that wasting disease is caused by a protist of the Labyrinthula genus, and that environmental stressors can make some populations of seagrasses more susceptible to infection. The purpose of this study was to examine the combined effects of elevated salinity, elevated temperature, elevated sulfide and night-time hypoxia on Thalassia testudinum health and its response to Labyrinthula sp. infection under controlled conditions. Carnivorous plants perform as both producers and consumers. Botanical carnivory has evolved in sunny, moist, nutrient-poor environments, and the primary nutrient supplied by prey is proposed to be nitrogen. There is a trade-off between carnivorous and photosynthetic structures which corresponds to degree of carnivory expression and available nutrients. This study was conducted on the hooded pitcher plant, Sarracenia minor, which is a facultative wetland plant and Florida-threatened species. Sarracenia minor is considered a specialist myrmecophage and ants characterize the majority of attracted and captured prey. Reduced reproduction has been shown to increase lifespan in many animals, yet the mechanisms behind this trade-off are mostly unknown. A previous study has shown that in the lubber grasshopper, Romalea microptera, ovariectomized (OVX) individuals have a 30% increase in lifespan relative to controls (Sham). In a separate study, an increase in fat body mass and a halting of ovarian growth were seen upon reduction of vitellogenin transcript via RNAi (VgRNAi). These data suggest that VgRNAi increases lifespan through the trade-off between reproduction and longevity and animals with combined ovariectomy and VgRNAi, might show additive physiological responses. This performance improvement project describes the use of master’s prepared nurses on medical surgical units to improve quality and patient satisfaction. The setting was five medical surgical units in a 200+ bed hospital in the southeastern United States. Declining resources necessitated an increase in the nurse to patient ratios on the units (from 5:1 to 6:1). Cyanobacteria are important components of the aquatic system, valued for their oxygen production, nitrogen fixation, and as the base of many aquatic food webs. This study investigated several aspects of cyanobacteria such as the diversity and response to nutrient enrichments. A survey of Northeast Florida was conducted between the years of 2010 and 2012; a total of 145 taxa were identified in freshwater habitats, such as springs, lakes, rivers, and retention ponds. While surveying the St. Johns River in Jacksonville, Florida, a novel Stigonematalean taxon was isolated and cultured. The purpose of this research was to understand the hormonal control of complex nutrient partitioning mechanisms involved in young, growing animals. Specifically, this involved the investigation of metabolic hormones and the regulation of growth in two common species of phocids (true seals): harbor seal (Phoca vitulina) and Northern elephant seal (Mirounga angustirostris) pups. Chloroplast-destined preproteins are translated in the cytosol, and posttranslationally targeted to and translocated across the double envelope membrane of the chloroplast by the coordinated activities of two translocon complexes: the Translocons at the Outer and Inner envelope membrane of the Chloroplast (TOC and TIC, respectively). In the model organism Arabidopsis thaliana the core TOC components include two families of GTPase receptors: TOC159 (atToc159, -132, and -120) and TOC34 (atToc33 and -34). These receptor families are hypothesized to assemble into distinct complexes and recognize transit peptides present on the N-terminus of chloroplast-destined preproteins. This study focuses on the effect of Ca and dissolved organic matter (DOM) on Ni toxicity to Hyalella azteca in soft waters (interpreted in the context of the biotic ligand model (BLM)) and is linked to a larger project directed at understanding the recovery of aquatic systems from long term smelter damage. Amphipods (source: Hannah Lake, Sudbury ON) were cultured and tested in soft waters (12 mg CaCO₃/L, pH 7.0, 21ºC) following Environment Canada standard method EPS 1/RM/33 (Environment Canada, 1997). This thesis reports key findings in the synthesis and transformation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with pentagonal symmetries. The main focus of the thesis work is on the synthesis of silver decahedral nanoparticles (AgDeNPs) and their transformation into larger AgDeNPs and silver pentagonal rod nanoparticles (AgPRNPs). In another direction, produced AgNPs were stabilized by gold plating. In a one-stage photochemical synthesis of AgDeNPs (pentagonal bipyramid, J₁₃ solid), oxidative etching by hydrogen peroxide was implemented to achieve complete conversion of the small silver platelet precursor NPs. The present study examined the relationship between perceptions of intelligence and interpersonal communication in a courtship setting. Participants engaged in speed-dating as a means to quantitatively assess whether evaluations of a dating partner would change from pre-test to post-test. Findings indicated positive messages caused participants to see a potential romantic partner as more intelligent. In contrast, negative communication resulted in unfavorable evaluations of dater intelligence. Study data focused on participant matches revealed women were significantly more selective than men in terms of second-date selection. The findings can be applied to various communicative contexts including employment interviewing and casual dating. Future …

Background: Every year an estimated three million neonates die globally and two hundred thousand of these deaths occur in Pakistan. Majority of these neonates die in rural areas of underdeveloped countries from preventable causes (infections, complications related to low birth weight and prematurity). Similarly about three hundred thousand mother died in 2010 and Pakistan is among ten countries where sixty percent burden of these deaths is concentrated. Maternal and neonatal mortality remain to be unacceptably high in Pakistan especially in rural areas where more than half of births occur.

香港婦女基金會何郭佩珍耆康中心致力推動長者老有所為，自我增值。此研究旨在了解中心會員參與班組及義工的情況，並思考如何增加其參與度。中心鼓勵會員從單向接收知識增值至學以致用，但事與願遺，暫時會員傾向只作為服務使用者參加班組，但很少作為服務提供者參與義務工作及自務義工活動。研究指出儘管會員都知道個人在社群的義務，包括伸手助人、弘揚傳統、貢獻社區，但他們都多在乎自身，如時間運用、身體狀況等，少有推己及人，未能從自助跨越到互助而達致增值。在眾多活動的選擇中，他們找不到充分的理由去選擇參與義工服務。研究認為中心在鼓勵服務使用者在接受服務後馬上成為義工的轉變過程中已遇到困難，應將服務使用者循序漸進引導成為服務組織者。研究亦發現中心會員普遍具有高中教育水平和心境年齡年輕的義工活動參與基礎，中心需加強為會員帶來價值觀的改變，讓會員明白義務工作可得到成就、尊重、認同。這些認知有助成為會員參與義工服務的動機，最終促使他們從服務使用者轉變成為服務提供者。

Hong Kong Women Foundation Ho Kwok Pui Chun Social Centre for the Elderly strives to promote active ageing among the elderly to enable them to self-enhancement. The study aimed at understanding the situation of the current participation of the Centre’s members in courses and voluntary works, as well as seeking solutions in promoting their level of participation in the aforementioned aspects. Unity within ASEAN and continued diplomatic efforts will be essential to preventing disputes leading to armed conflict. By solving its internal inconsistencies and achieving stability, ASEAN will be able to promote its centrality in the region's security architecture as well as its importance in the global arena.

This study aims to classify this littoral evergreen forest and to analyze the environmental factors that determine its composition and structure and evaluate the potential of carbon stock of each vegetation community. Seventy-five plots were sampled, the plant cover was measured, and the importance value index was calculated. Thirty-seven soil samples were analyzed, and cluster analysis was employed to classify the vegetation communities. Floristic and environmental data were evaluated and ordered using the canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). THEOS was applied to classify the vegetation boundary. Parts of the Ogun River basin namely Mokoloki, Brewery, Akomoje, Akin Olugbade, Lafenwa, Oyan, Arakanga, and Kara were surveyed to determine the effects of bedrock metals on the water quality of the river. Physicochemical analyses were done on the bedrock and water samples obtained while bedrock trace metal analyses were determined using the Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry. Water trace metal analyses were carried out by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS). Data obtained were subjected to the Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT). This article describes the recent development of renewable energy to examine environmental law’s three contrasting approaches to the green harms of green projects. Sometimes the law allows the green benefit regardless of the green harm. Sometimes the law prohibits the green harm regardless of the green benefit. And sometimes the law allows a balancing of all of the harms and benefits, green or not. Given these options, I argue that the law should not ignore or understate green harms even if they are caused by green projects. There are some types of green harms that no benefit can justify. In NFIB v. Sebelius, the Supreme Court’s recent case addressing the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act, the Court concluded that the expansion of Medicaid in that Act was unconstitutionally coercive and therefore exceeded the scope of Congress’s authority under the Spending Clause. This was the first time that the Court treated coercion as an issue of more than mere theoretical possibility under the Spending Clause. The paper outlines a strategy for distinguishing rank-dependent probability weighting from systematic risk misperceptions in field data. Our strategy relies on singling out a field environment with two key properties: (i) the objects of choice are money lotteries with more than two outcomes and (ii) the ranking of outcomes differs across lotteries. We first present an abstract model of risky choice that elucidates the identification problem and our strategy. The model has numerous applications, including insurance choices and gambling. We then consider the application of insurance deductible choices and illustrate our strategy using simulated data.

The ambiguity of claim language is generally considered to be the most important problem in patent law today. Linguistic ambiguity is believed to cause tremendous uncertainty about patent rights. Scholars and judges have accordingly devoted enormous attention to developing better linguistic tools to help courts understand patent claims.

In this article, we explain why this diagnosis is fundamentally wrong. Claims are not often ambiguous, and linguistic ambiguity is not a major cause of the uncertainty in patent law today. This paper explores the intersection of race and French colonial policy at the 1922 National Colonial Exposition of Marseille, which occurred in the midst of Europe's "exposition fever," during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. I posit that the Exposition introduced the paradox of formal, constructed colonial exhibits that were posed against the backdrop of a thriving French city reaping the economic benefits of its colonial exploitation.
