Matching Contributions And Saving Outcomes: A Behavioral Economics Perspective, Brigitte C. Madrian Jan 2013

Matching Contributions And Saving Outcomes: A Behavioral Economics Perspective, Brigitte C. Madrian

Faculty Publications

Including a matching contribution increases savings plan participation and contributions, although the impact is less significant than the impact of nonfinancial approaches. Conditional on participation, a higher match rate has only a small effect on savings plan contributions. In contrast, the match threshold has a substantial impact, probably because it serves as a natural reference point when individuals are deciding how much to save and may be viewed as advice from the savings program sponsor on how much to save. Other behavioral approaches to changing savings plan outcomes—including automatic enrollment, simplification, planning aids, reminders, and commitment features—potentially have a much …

Self Vs. Society: The Essential Antagonism Between Society And The Individual In Adam Bede, The Mill On The Floss, And Daniel Deronda, Meredith Leigh Wilson Jan 2013

Self Vs. Society: The Essential Antagonism Between Society And The Individual In Adam Bede, The Mill On The Floss, And Daniel Deronda, Meredith Leigh Wilson

Honors Theses

This study focuses on the conflicts between society and the individual in three of George Eliot’s works: Adam Bede, The Mill on the Floss, and Daniel Deronda. This work analyzes the relationship between the individual and his or her society within these novels and uses its findings to illustrate the mechanism and goal of social evolution as it is depicted in these three works. Research was conducted by reading several primary and secondary texts. The primary texts included the three novels discussed, as well as many of Eliot’s non-fiction essays and Herbert Spencer’s essay The Social Organism, in order to …

The Lessons Of Living Gardens And Jewish Process Theology For Authorship And Moral Rights, Roberta Kwall Jan 2013

The Lessons Of Living Gardens And Jewish Process Theology For Authorship And Moral Rights, Roberta Kwall

College of Law Faculty

This Article examines the issues of authorship, fixation and moral rights through the lens of Jewish Process Theology. Jewish Process Theology is an application of Process Thought, which espouses a developmental and fluid perspective with respect to creation and creativity. This discipline offers important insights for how to shape and enforce copyright law. The issue of "change" and authorship is more important now than ever before given how the digital age is revolutionizing the way we think about authorship. The Seventh Circuit's recent decision wrongly maintaining that a living garden is not capable of copyright protection since it is unfixed, …

Psychology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Genetic factors can play a role in the multiple level of analyses approach to understanding the development of child psychology. The present study examined gene-environment correlations and Gene x Environment interactions for polymorphisms of three target genes, the serotonin transporter gene, the D4 dopamine reactor gene, and the monoamine oxidase A gene in relation to symptoms of anxiety, depression, and oppositional behavior. Saliva samples were collected from 175 non-Hispanic White, 4-year-old children. Psychosocial risk factors included socioeconomic status, life stress, caretaker depression, parental support, hostility, and scaffolding skills. In comparison with the short forms (s/s, s/l) of the serotonin transporter …

Lateralization Of Simulated Sources And Echoes On The Basis Of Interaural Differences Of Level, Raymond H. Dye Jr, Jacquelyn P. Hill, Leslie M. Ryan, Alexander E. Cupler, Kevin M. Bannon

Psychology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This experiment assessed the relative weights given to source and echo pulses lateralized on the basis of interaural differences of level (IDLs). Separate conditions were run in which the to-be-judged target was the first (source) or second (echo) pulse. Each trial consisted of two intervals; the first presented a 3000-Hz diotic pulse that marked the intracranial midline and the pitch of the target frequency. The second presented the sequence of a source followed by an echo. Target frequency was always 3000 Hz, while the non-target pulse was presented at 1500, 3000, or 5000 Hz. Delays between the source and echo …

An Intuitive Design Pattern For Sequentially Estimating Parameters Of A 2k Factorial Experiment With Active Confounding Avoidance And Least Treatment Combinations, H.-S. Jacob Tsao, Minnie Patel Jan 2013

An Intuitive Design Pattern For Sequentially Estimating Parameters Of A 2k Factorial Experiment With Active Confounding Avoidance And Least Treatment Combinations, H.-S. Jacob Tsao, Minnie Patel

Faculty Publications

2k Full factorial designs may be prohibitively expensive when the number of factors k is large. The most popular technique developed to reduce the number of treatment combinations is the fractional factorial design; confounding in estimating the model parameters naturally results in various resolution and aberration levels. While very useful, these resolution levels may not satisfy experimenters’ requirements for estimatibility and cost reduction. For example, while Resolution V ensures a common requirement that no two-factor interactions are confounded, it also imposes an often undesired restriction that a main effect cannot be confounded with a three-factor interaction, which may very well …

Are 34s-Enriched Authigenic Sulfide Minerals A Proxy For Elevated Methane Flux And Gas Hydrates In The Geologic Record?, Walter S. Borowski, Nancy M. Rodriguez, Charles K. Paull, William Ussler Iii

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

The sulfate–methane transition (SMT) zone is a diagenetic transition within anoxic marine sediments created by the metabolic activity of a consortium of sulfate-reducing bacteria and methane-oxidizing Archaea. As interstitial dissolved sulfate is consumed by microbially mediated sulfate reduction of sedimentary organic matter (SOM) and anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) large enrichments of 34S occur in the interstitial sulfate pool. These isotopic enrichments are transmitted to the dissolved sulfide pool (∑HS−) and subsequently into sulfide minerals (So, ∼FeS, FeS2).

We investigate the sulfur isotopic composition of pore-water sulfate and sulfide minerals at three sites underlain …

Linking Obesity To Colorectal Cancer: Recent Insights Into Plausible Biological Mechanisms, Catherine Guffey Jan 2013

Linking Obesity To Colorectal Cancer: Recent Insights Into Plausible Biological Mechanisms, Catherine Guffey

Theses and Dissertations

Obesity has emerged as a leading environmental risk factor for the development of CRC. However, the mechanisms underlying this relationship have not yet been fully explained. Recent literature has focused on 1) inflammatory processes, 2) adipokines, and 3) estrogen. Obesity-enhanced inflammation is largely orchestrated by increases in adipose tissue macrophages leading to the secretion of TNF-alpha, MCP-1, and IL-6, all of which are linked to CRC. Adiponectin is decreased with obesity and has been reported to be negatively associated with CRC, while leptin, which is increased, is positively associated with the disease. Estrogen has been shown to influence CRC, although …

Examining The Direct And Interactive Effects Of Positive Coping On Depressive Symptomology In African American Women, Heather Andrea Eaddy Jan 2013

Examining The Direct And Interactive Effects Of Positive Coping On Depressive Symptomology In African American Women, Heather Andrea Eaddy

Theses and Dissertations

In the larger stress and coping literature, several studies have examined ethnic differences in stress experiences and coping behaviors (Plummer and Slane, 1996; Slavin et al., 1991; Brantley et al., 2002). However, these studies are often comparative in nature and fail to examine within group variation (Plummer & Slane, 1996; Slavin et al., 1991; Smith, 1985). Similarly, studies have also neglected to examine how African American women cope when confronted with certain stressors and the associated mental health outcomes. With this in mind, the goal of the current study is to close existing gaps by examining the relationship between routine …

Made In Japan: Kumi-Daiko As A New Art Form, Anna Marie Viviano Jan 2013

Made In Japan: Kumi-Daiko As A New Art Form, Anna Marie Viviano

Theses and Dissertations

Japanese taiko ensemble drumming, known in Japan as kumi-daiko, is an art form that has only taken shape within the past fifty years. This new performance style involving taiko seems, on the surface, to have much in common with traditional Japanese court and theater music, regarded by scholars as the art music of Japan. Using drums that have a long history in Japan, however, does not necessarily make that ensemble part of ancient Japanese tradition. By studying the most famous groups in Japan, such as Kodo, it is easy to discern that kumi-daiko has many different inspirations, but is not …

How Species Richness And Total Abundance Constrain The Distribution Of Abundance, Kenneth J. Locey, Ethan P. White Jan 2013

How Species Richness And Total Abundance Constrain The Distribution Of Abundance, Kenneth J. Locey, Ethan P. White

Biology Faculty Publications

The species abundance distribution (SAD) is one of the most intensively studied distributions in ecology and its hollow-curve shape is one of ecology’s most general patterns. We examine the SAD in the context of all possible forms having the same richness (S) and total abundance (N), i.e. the feasible set. We find that feasible sets are dominated by similarly-shaped hollow-curves, most of which are highly correlated with empirical SADs (most R2 values > 75%), revealing a strong influence of N and S on the form of the SAD and an a priori explanation for the ubiquitous hollow-curve. Empirical SADs are often …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Pig breeding is usually undertaken for fat and meat production, but different sectors (cosmetics industry, pharmaceutical industry, medical sector, etc.) can also use pigs for alternate purposes. Pork is evaluated based on the status of an amended law regarding butchers' meat in Turkey. There have been 25 pig farms registered in Turkey since 7 July 2006 in the framework of compliance with the European Union. On average, a sow has 2.3 farrowings per year, producing 9.5 to 12.5 piglets per litter. It is important that high proportions of selected replacement gilts reach puberty at an early age in order to …

Whole-Blood Thrombelastography Using Calcium Chloride Activation In Healthy Cats, Ramazan Çöl, Alicia Montgomery, Maria Cristina Iazbik, Ashley Defelice, Poulo Vilar Saavedra, Guillermo Couto

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Thrombelastography (TEG, Haemoscope Corp., Niles, IL, USA) allows for a global evaluation of the hemostatic system; while conventional coagulation tests typically evaluate only one part of the coagulation system, TEG simultaneously examines the interaction between platelets, clotting factors, the fibrinolytic system, and clot retraction mechanisms. Since its development, TEG has been widely employed in human clinical medicine and research, but has only recently gained popularity in veterinary medicine. The purpose of this study was to establish TEG reference ranges in healthy cats using the citrated native technique. In this study, 31 clinically healthy cats were evaluated. We sampled healthy adult …
