Some Brief Syllabus Advice For The Young Economist, Emily Chamlee-Wright, Joshua Hall Jan 2013

Some Brief Syllabus Advice For The Young Economist, Emily Chamlee-Wright, Joshua Hall

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

We touch on three major pieces of syllabus language that we think can help young economists manage their economics classes in a liberal arts environment. Like the writing of a constitution, it is not enough to just copy the words on the page in order for them to be effective. Instead they must fit the “facts on the ground” and the day-to-day experiences of students. If the syllabus talks about valuing everyone’s time and yet the classroom experience does not reflect that, the syllabus language is useless. Like constitutions, however, syllabi are useful as a starting point for nurturing a …

Christian Hospitality And Muslims, Amir Hussain Jan 2013

Christian Hospitality And Muslims, Amir Hussain

Theological Studies Faculty Works

This theological reflection incorporates the work of three Christian thinkers, Wilfred Cantwell Smith, Willard Oxtoby, and Thomas Michel SJ, who have helped the author, a Muslim, to better understand interfaith dialogue between Muslims and Christians. The reflection draws on music and popular culture to explore the idea of faithful Christian witness, and how Christian hospitality can help Muslims and Christians to be better faith neighbours. The connections between Muslims and Christians are examined throughout this reflection.

Freeing Morgan Freeman: Expanding Back-End Release Authority In American Prisons, Frank O. Bowman Iii Jan 2013

Freeing Morgan Freeman: Expanding Back-End Release Authority In American Prisons, Frank O. Bowman Iii

Faculty Publications

This article, written for a symposium hosted by the Wake Forest Journal of Law & Policy on “Finality in Sentencing,” makes four arguments, three general and one specific. First, the United States incarcerates too many people for too long, and mechanisms for making prison sentences less “final” will allow the U.S. to make those sentences shorter, thus reducing the prison population surplus. Second, even if one is agnostic about the overall size of the American prison population, it is difficult to deny that least some appreciable fraction of current inmates are serving more time than can reasonably be justified on …

Infiltrated Composite Electrodes For Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, Aligul Buyukaksoy Jan 2013

Infiltrated Composite Electrodes For Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, Aligul Buyukaksoy

Doctoral Dissertations

"Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are electrochemical devices which can convert chemical energy to electrical energy with efficiencies up to 60%. In order for SOFCs to be favorable energy conversion devices, the power obtained from a unit volume should be improved. This corresponds to minimized resistances from SOFC components (composite electrodes and electrolyte). Stability of the generated power is another important issue. Degradation of SOFCs with time due to microstructural processes or chemical reactions that occur at operating conditions; and due to reduction/oxidation cycles caused by the changes in the anode has been an important obstacle that has prevented the …

On The Effect Of Silicon And Phosphorus During The Precipitation Of Κ-Carbide In Fe-Mn-Al-C Alloys, Laura Bartlett

Doctoral Dissertations

"Implementation of lightweight high manganese and aluminum steels for use in high energy absorbing applications requires a detailed knowledge of how alloying additions and impurities affect age hardening and high strain rate fracture properties. Dynamic fracture toughness is an important design criterion but has not been reported previously in these alloys. In addition, previous studies have shown that silicon and phosphorus increased the strength and aged hardness; however, the mechanism was unknown. This research mainly focuses on the effect of silicon and phosphorus on the precipitation of Κ-carbide and alloy partitioning during aging. Short range ordering, SRO, of Fe-Al-C into …

Phase Transitions In Disordered Systems, Fawaz Y. Hrahsheh Jan 2013

Phase Transitions In Disordered Systems, Fawaz Y. Hrahsheh

Doctoral Dissertations

"Disorder can have a wide variety of consequences for the physics of phase transitions. Some transitions remain unchanged in the presence of disorder while others are completely destroyed. In this thesis we study the effects of disorder on several classical and quantum phase transitions in condensed matter systems. After a brief introduction, we study the ferromagnetic phase transition in a randomly layered Heisenberg magnet using large-scale Monte-Carlo simulations. Our results provide numerical evidence for the exotic infinite-randomness scenario. We study classical and quantum smeared phase transitions in substitutional alloys A₁₋ₓBₓ. Our results show that the disorder completely destroys the phase …

Social-Context Based Routing And Security In Delay Tolerant Networks, Roy A. Cabaniss Jan 2013

Social-Context Based Routing And Security In Delay Tolerant Networks, Roy A. Cabaniss

Doctoral Dissertations

"Delay Tolerant Networks (DTNs) were originally intended for interplanetary communications and have been applied to a series of difficult environments: wireless sensor networks, unmanned aerial vehicles, and short-range personal communications. There is a class of such environments in which nodes follow semi-predictable social patterns, such as wildlife tracking or personal devices. This work introduces a series of algorithms designed to identify the social patterns present in these environments and apply this data to difficult problems, such as efficient message routing and content distribution. Security is also difficult in a mobile environment. This is especially the case in the event that …

Shear And Fracture Behavior Of High Performance Concretes, Mahdi Arezoumandi Jan 2013

Shear And Fracture Behavior Of High Performance Concretes, Mahdi Arezoumandi

Doctoral Dissertations

"Concrete is the most widely used man-made material in the world. Like other materials, it has been improved over time. Nowadays, with continued development of science and technology, a new generation of concretes is produced and is termed high performance concretes. A review of previously published work indicates that very few studies (in some cases none) have addressed the structural behavior of full-scale, high performance concrete elements. This study investigated the shear and fracture behavior of two types of high performance concrete - high-volume fly ash concrete (HVFAC) and self-consolidating concrete (SCC). The HVFAC incorporates up to 70% cement replacement …

Bioactive Glass Scaffolds For The Regeneration Of Load-Bearing Bone, Xin Liu Jan 2013

Bioactive Glass Scaffolds For The Regeneration Of Load-Bearing Bone, Xin Liu

Doctoral Dissertations

"Biocompatible scaffolds that replicate the structure and function of bone would be ideal bone substitutes for structural bone loss, provided they have the requisite mechanical properties for reliable long-term loading. In this dissertation, strong porous scaffolds of silicate 13-93 bioactive glass, created with two different microstructures, were evaluated to determine their mechanical properties and their capacity to regenerate bone in a rat calvarial defect model. Scaffolds with an oriented microstructure of columnar pores were prepared by unidirectional freezing of camphene-based suspensions, followed by thermal annealing and sintering. By optimizing the freezing conditions, annealing time, and sintering temperature, constructs (porosity = …

Stratospheric chemistry and denitrification are simulated for the Arctic winter 2009/2010 with the Lagrangian Chemistry and Transport Model ATLAS. A number of sensitivity runs is used to explore the impact of uncertainties in chlorine activation and denitrification on the model results. In particular, the efficiency of chlorine activation on different types of liquid aerosol versus activation on nitric acid trihydrate clouds is examined. Additionally, the impact of changes in reaction rate coefficients, in the particle number density of polar stratospheric clouds, in supersaturation, temperature or the extent of denitrification is investigated. Results are compared to satellite measurements of MLS and …

Nanoscale Metal Oxide And Supported Metal Catalysts For Li-Air Battery, Kan Huang Jan 2013

Nanoscale Metal Oxide And Supported Metal Catalysts For Li-Air Battery, Kan Huang

Doctoral Dissertations

"The dissertation work focuses on research and development of durable nanoscale catalysts and supports for rechargeable Li-air batteries that use aqueous catholytes. Transition metal oxides, TiO2 and Nb2O5 in particular, were prepared from a sol-gel process in the form of nanocoatings (5~50 nm) on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and studied as catalyst supports. Carbon doping in the oxides and post annealing significantly increased their electronic conductivity. Pt catalyst on the support with TiO2 (Pt/c-TiO2/CNTs) showed a much better oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity than a commercial Pt on carbon black (Pt/C). Negligible loss ( …

Polarization And Opinion Analysis In An Online Argumentation System For Collaborative Decision Support, Ravi Santosh Arvapally Jan 2013

Polarization And Opinion Analysis In An Online Argumentation System For Collaborative Decision Support, Ravi Santosh Arvapally

Doctoral Dissertations

"Argumentation is an important process in a collaborative decision making environment. Argumentation from a large number of stakeholders often produces a large argumentation tree. It is challenging to comprehend such an argumentation tree without intelligent analysis tools. Also, limited decision support is provided for its analysis by the existing argumentation systems. In an argumentation process, stakeholders tend to polarize on their opinions, and form polarization groups. Each group is usually led by a group leader. Polarization groups often overlap and a stakeholder is a member of multiple polarization groups. Identifying polarization groups and quantifying a stakeholder's degree of membership in …

Dynamic Modeling, Stability Analysis, And Controller Design For Dc Distribution Systems, Reza Ahmadi Jan 2013

Dynamic Modeling, Stability Analysis, And Controller Design For Dc Distribution Systems, Reza Ahmadi

Doctoral Dissertations

"The dc distribution systems or dc microgrids are known to be best suited for integration of renewable energy sources into the current power grid and are considered to be the key enabling technology for the development of future smart grid. Dc microgrids also benefit from better current capabilities of dc power lines, better short circuit protection, and transformer-less conversion of voltage levels, which result in higher efficiency, flexibility, and lower cost. While the idea of using a dc microgrid to interface distributed energy sources and modern loads to the power grid seems appealing at first, several issues must be addressed …

Cryogenic Test Of A Proof-Of-Principle Superconducting Rf-Dipole Deflecting And Crabbing Cavity, S. U. De Silva, Jean R. Delayen Jan 2013

Cryogenic Test Of A Proof-Of-Principle Superconducting Rf-Dipole Deflecting And Crabbing Cavity, S. U. De Silva, Jean R. Delayen

Physics Faculty Publications

Recent applications in need of compact low-frequency deflecting and crabbing cavities have initiated the design and development of new superconducting structures operating at high gradients with low losses. Previously, TM110-type deflecting and crabbing cavities were developed and have also been operated successfully. However, these geometries are not favorable designs for low operating frequencies. The superconducting rf-dipole cavity is the first compact deflecting and crabbing geometry that has demonstrated high gradients and high shunt impedance. Since the fundamental operating mode is the lowest mode and is widely separated from the nearest higher order mode, the rf-dipole design is an …

Fluctuations Of Charge Separation Perpendicular To The Event Plane And Local Parity Violation In √ˢᴺᴺ = 200 Gev Au + Au Collisions At The Bnl Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, L. Adamczyk, J. K. Adkins, G. Agakishiev, S. Bültmann, M. Zyzak, Star Collaboration Jan 2013

Fluctuations Of Charge Separation Perpendicular To The Event Plane And Local Parity Violation In √ˢᴺᴺ = 200 Gev Au + Au Collisions At The Bnl Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, L. Adamczyk, J. K. Adkins, G. Agakishiev, S. Bültmann, M. Zyzak, Star Collaboration

Physics Faculty Publications

Previous experimental results based on data (~ 15 x 106 events) collected by the STAR detector at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider suggest event-by-event charge-separation fluctuations perpendicular to the event plane in noncentral heavy-ion collisions. Here we present the correlator previously used split into its two component parts to reveal correlations parallel and perpendicular to the event plane. The results are from a high-statistics 200-GeV Au + Au collisions data set (57 x 106 events) collected by the STAR experiment. We explicitly count units of charge separation from which we find clear evidence for more charge-separation fluctuations …

Mechanical Analysis Of The 400 Mhz Rf-Dipole Crabbing Cavity Prototype For Lhc High Luminosity Upgrade, S. U. De Silva, H. Park, J. R. Delayen, Z. Li

Physics Faculty Publications

The proposed LHC high luminosity upgrade requires two crabbing systems in increasing the peak luminosity, operating both vertically and horizontally at two interaction points of IP1 and IP5. The required system has tight dimensional constraints and needs to achieve higher operational gradients. A proof-of-principle 400 MHz crabbing cavity design has been successfully tested and has proven to be an ideal candidate for the crabbing system. The cylindrical proof-of-principle rf-dipole design has been adapted in to a square shaped design to further meet the dimensional requirements. The new rf-dipole design has been optimized in meeting the requirements in rf-properties, higher order …

Structural And Magnetic Properties Of Ni And Cr Substituted La₀.₇Sr₀.₃Mno₃, Thomas Franklin Creel Jr. Jan 2013

Structural And Magnetic Properties Of Ni And Cr Substituted La₀.₇Sr₀.₃Mno₃, Thomas Franklin Creel Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

"The La₁₋ₓSrₓMn1-yByO₃ perovskite systems where B represents a 3d transition metal such as Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn, are of significant interest due to their large magnetoresistance, and electronic transport properties that change significantly, depending on values of x and which transition metal used. Their applications in technology include cathodes for solid oxide fuel cells, resistance random access memory and catalysis. At certain doping concentrations on the B-site, metal-to-semiconductor or metal-to-insulator transitions coupled with colossal magnetoresistance occur, decreasing the resistivity (up to six orders of magnitude) upon the application of an external magnetic field. …

Isocyanate-Derived Organic Aerogels: Polyurethanes, Polyureas, Polyamides And Polyimides, Chakkaravarthy Chidambareswarapattar Jan 2013

Isocyanate-Derived Organic Aerogels: Polyurethanes, Polyureas, Polyamides And Polyimides, Chakkaravarthy Chidambareswarapattar

Doctoral Dissertations

"Aerogels are 3D assemblies of nanoparticles with high open porosity and high surface area, and are pursued for their low density, low thermal conductivity, low dielectric constant and high acoustic attenuation. The foundation for those exceptional properties is their complex hierarchical solid framework (agglomerates of porous, fractal secondary nanoparticles). On the down side, however, aerogels are also fragile materials. The mechanical strength of silica aerogels has been improved by crosslinking the framework with organic polymers. The crosslinking polymer has been assumed to form a conformal coating on the surface of the skeletal framework bridging covalently the elementary building blocks. However, …

Location Based Services In Wireless Ad Hoc Networks, Neelanjana Dutta Jan 2013
