Effect Of Ecological Factors On Vegetation And Carbon Stock On Samaesan Island, Chonburi Province, Thailand, Nathsuda Pumijumnong, Paramate Payomrat

Applied Environmental Research

This study aims to classify this littoral evergreen forest and to analyze the environmental factors that determine its composition and structure and evaluate the potential of carbon stock of each vegetation community. Seventy-five plots were sampled, the plant cover was measured, and the importance value index was calculated. Thirty-seven soil samples were analyzed, and cluster analysis was employed to classify the vegetation communities. Floristic and environmental data were evaluated and ordered using the canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). THEOS was applied to classify the vegetation boundary. Allometric equations were used to calculate the aboveground biomass. The results revealed that the vegetation …

Urban Heat Island Phenomenon In Relation To Land Use/Land Cover In Bangkok Metropolitan Administration Area, Parinya Chayapong, Songkot Dasananda Jan 2013

Urban Heat Island Phenomenon In Relation To Land Use/Land Cover In Bangkok Metropolitan Administration Area, Parinya Chayapong, Songkot Dasananda

Applied Environmental Research

The urban heat island (UHI) phenomenon can be found in the megacities around the world where near-surface temperatures over the city core area were notably higher than those over the surrounding rural area. Intensity of the UHI phenomenon (\inline \DeltaT) was usually measured by the temperature differences between urban locations and some refereed rural sites. This situation was resulted mainly from the presence of dense builtup elements, e.g. commercial buildings or houses, as well as human activities that tended to release considerable heat into atmosphere. At present, the UHI monitoring can be done efficiently by using satellite-based thermal infrared (TIR) …

Metal Concentrations In The Water And Bedrock Of Ogun River, Nigeria, Anslem Diayi, Michael Gbadebo

Applied Environmental Research

Parts of the Ogun River basin namely Mokoloki, Brewery, Akomoje, Akin Olugbade, Lafenwa, Oyan, Arakanga, and Kara were surveyed to determine the effects of bedrock metals on the water quality of the river. Physicochemical analyses were done on the bedrock and water samples obtained while bedrock trace metal analyses were determined using the Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry. Water trace metal analyses were carried out by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS). Data obtained were subjected to the Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT). Results obtained showed that Cadmium (Cd) (0.425-1.990 ppm for bedrock samples and 0.005-0.011 mg L-1 for water samples) …

Livelihood Dynamic In Semi Arid Communities: Adapting To Climate Change Around Kainji Lake, Nigeria, Usman Raheem, Felix Olorunfemi, Olutoyin Fashae, Gbenga Awotayo Jan 2013

Livelihood Dynamic In Semi Arid Communities: Adapting To Climate Change Around Kainji Lake, Nigeria, Usman Raheem, Felix Olorunfemi, Olutoyin Fashae, Gbenga Awotayo

Applied Environmental Research

The consequences of climate change and extreme meteorological events, particularly for rural dwellers is the collapse of many natural resource based livelihood systems. Thus as an adaptation strategy, many households often need to change their major occupation or supplement it with some other jobs that may be less vulnerable to during extreme weather conditions. This study examines livelihood diversification consequent on climate change and/or extreme weather events in the semi-arid regions of Nigeria. This is with a view to determining the sustainability of adaptation strategies among rural dwellers. Using a mixed method approach, Focus Group Discussion sessions and structured questionnaire …

Study Of Impact And Solutions Of Increasing Vehicles Weight, Hicham Abdel Kader El Merhebi Jan 2013

Study Of Impact And Solutions Of Increasing Vehicles Weight, Hicham Abdel Kader El Merhebi

All ETDs from UAB

ABSTRACT The United States Congress is currently considering legislation which would allow states to increase truck weights on Interstates from 80,000 to 97,000 pounds. While this legislation may decrease transportation costs, as well as increase safety and benefit the environment, it may cause serious damage to bridges. Currently, out of 600,000 bridges in the United States, 65,000 are considered "structurally deficient", where at least one major component needs rehabilitation or replacement. Approximately 8,000 are considered "fracture critical", where no redundancy exists and collapse will occur if one critical component fails. The average age of a bridge in the United States …

The Impact Of Transcription And Nucleoid-Associated Proteins On Dna Supercoiling In Escherichia Coli And Salmonella Typhimurium, Andrews Agbleke Jan 2013

The Impact Of Transcription And Nucleoid-Associated Proteins On Dna Supercoiling In Escherichia Coli And Salmonella Typhimurium, Andrews Agbleke

All ETDs from UAB

Bacterial chromosomes are maintained under constant negative supercoiled stress that influences almost all cellular processes including DNA replication, transcription, segregation, site-specific and homologous recombination, and other DNA transposition. The average supercoiling density of the chromosome is generated by gyrase, and supercoil equilibrium is maintained by two other topoisomerases topo I and topo IV. The supercoils generated by gyrase can diffuse over 10 kb domains. The other half of the chromosome's supercoil structure is connected to abundant nucleoid-associated proteins (NAPs). My goal was to characterize factors other than gyrase that participate in generating or regulating supercoil dynamics in Escherichia coli and …

Psychological Effects Of Spiritually Integrated Therapy For Infertile Women, Shiquina Andrews Jan 2013

Psychological Effects Of Spiritually Integrated Therapy For Infertile Women, Shiquina Andrews

All ETDs from UAB

Like other medical conditions, infertility is often unforeseen and difficult to resolve. Though both genders are impacted, women exhibit the most psychological distress following the diagnosis. Among other coping strategies, some women use their religious or spiritual beliefs to cope with the crisis of infertility. While projects investigating the role of spirituality in mental and physical health are growing in momentum, none has integrated religious or spiritual beliefs into a formal psychological intervention for infertile women. This project aimed to evaluate the efficacy, feasibility, and acceptability of such a 6-week, phone-based, spiritually-integrated therapy (SIT) program for infertile women. In the …

Asymmetric Hydrogenation Of Α, Β-Unsaturated Carboxylic Acid Over Chiral-Modified Palladium Catalyst, Shuai Tan Jan 2013

Asymmetric Hydrogenation Of Α, Β-Unsaturated Carboxylic Acid Over Chiral-Modified Palladium Catalyst, Shuai Tan

Theses and Dissertations

The production of optically pure chemicals through enantioselective catalytic reaction plays a key role a variety of industrials (e.g., pharmaceutical, agrochemical). Among several established methods, chiral-modified supported transition metal catalyst has been addressed attentions since past decades due to an environmental concern. Asymmetric hydrogenation of α, β-unsaturated carboxylic acid over Pd catalyst is of particular interest in this area. Nevertheless, the spectroscopic aspect, as well as the kinetic mechanism of such reaction system are still not clearly understood and require further study. In this work, a model catalytic reaction has been investigated from both spectroscopic and kinetic view. To be …

Analysis Of Reits And Reit Etfs Cointegration During The Flash Crash., Stoyu Ivanov

Faculty Publications

In this study I revisit the “disintegration hypothesis” of financial assets around a major crisis event. I examine whether the Vanguard Real Estate Investment Trust and iShares Dow Jones US Real Estate Index Fund exchange traded funds disintegrate from the ten largest Real Estate Investment Trusts during the 14:45 Flash Crash on May 6, 2010. I find that six of the ten largest REITs are not cointegrated with the Vanguard Real Estate Investment Trust prior to the Flash Crash and that five of the ten largest REITs are not cointegrated with iShares Dow Jones US Real Estate Index Fund prior …

Analysis Of The Effects Of Pre-Announcement Of S&P 500 Index Changes., Stoyu Ivanov Jan 2013

Analysis Of The Effects Of Pre-Announcement Of S&P 500 Index Changes., Stoyu Ivanov

Faculty Publications

In this study we attempt to answer the question – does the start of pre-announcing of S&P 500 index changes in October 1989 have an effect on the trading pattern of added or deleted firms? We document that prior to October 1989 the excess returns of added or deleted firms follow a white noise process around the event, whereas after the start of pre-announcing the excess returns can be described as nonstationary. This indicates significant excess profits to be captured around the addition or deletion event after S&P started pre-announcing changes in October 1989 but not prior to that date.

Authority And Personality In M.M. Bakhtin's "Author And Hero In Aesthetic Activity", Joel Scott Ward Jan 2013

Authority And Personality In M.M. Bakhtin's "Author And Hero In Aesthetic Activity", Joel Scott Ward

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

M.M. Bakhtin's fundamental claim in his seminal essay "Author and Hero in Aesthetic Activity" situates verbal action as the most essential constituent of human personality. A careful reading of this text reveals important truths about the relationship between free individual personhood and the nature of the speech utterance. Bakhtin connects the human experience of speech to the life and person of Jesus Christ emphasizing the incarnation and the Trinitarian view of God as essential principles for understanding the creative power of the word and consequent liabilities. Bakhtin develops these theological and philosophical coordinates around a discussion of the author-hero relationship …

The Implications Of Worker Behavior For Staffing Decisions: Empirical Evidence And Best Practices, Tom Tan, Serguei Netessine Jan 2013

The Implications Of Worker Behavior For Staffing Decisions: Empirical Evidence And Best Practices, Tom Tan, Serguei Netessine

IT & Operations Management Research

Employees in service organizations such as restaurants are humans, and their productivity is often heterogeneous due to innate abilities, motivation, and environmental factors. However, none of these considerations are taken into account by typical workforce planning models and software packages. In this paper we describe the results of a study on how workers respond to workload, an integral work environment factor, and we provide operational insights to improve efficiency and strengthen restaurant financials. We study a comprehensive data set from a family-style restaurant chain to clarify how workload, which is defined as the number of tables or diners that a …

Teaching Government Information In Information Literacy Credit Classes, Emily Rogers Jan 2013

Teaching Government Information In Information Literacy Credit Classes, Emily Rogers

Georgia Library Quarterly

This paper reviews the teaching of credit-bearing information literacy courses and government information, reports questionnaire responses from librarians who teach these courses, and argues that revising the ways we teach government information in for-credit courses will help students achieve information literacy. A focus on government information as critical thinking and subject access resources, rather than as unique documents collections or formats, can remove barriers for researchers, particularly in classes that allow students an entire term to develop skills. In addition, librarians will increase their comfort levels addressing government information and develop ways to teach students to use these resources within …

Does School District And Municipality Border Congruence Matter? A Spatial Hedonic Approach, Joshua Hall Jan 2013

Does School District And Municipality Border Congruence Matter? A Spatial Hedonic Approach, Joshua Hall

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

Research on zoning typically assumes city planners aim to maximize housing prices with their land use decisions, either explicitly for public choice reasons or implicitly through the approval of land uses that create local net benefits. Noncongruence of school district and municipality borders severs the link between costs and benefits in the eyes of the median voter, however, which could result in excessive residential development and fiscal externalities that lowers property values. This paper uses a hedonic approach to indirectly observe the presence of these externalities. Border congruency between school districts and municipalities in Ohio is measured using GIS data …

Some Brief Syllabus Advice For The Young Economist, Emily Chamlee-Wright, Joshua Hall Jan 2013

Some Brief Syllabus Advice For The Young Economist, Emily Chamlee-Wright, Joshua Hall

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

We touch on three major pieces of syllabus language that we think can help young economists manage their economics classes in a liberal arts environment. Like the writing of a constitution, it is not enough to just copy the words on the page in order for them to be effective. Instead they must fit the “facts on the ground” and the day-to-day experiences of students. If the syllabus talks about valuing everyone’s time and yet the classroom experience does not reflect that, the syllabus language is useless. Like constitutions, however, syllabi are useful as a starting point for nurturing a …

Christian Hospitality And Muslims, Amir Hussain Jan 2013

Christian Hospitality And Muslims, Amir Hussain

Theological Studies Faculty Works

This theological reflection incorporates the work of three Christian thinkers, Wilfred Cantwell Smith, Willard Oxtoby, and Thomas Michel SJ, who have helped the author, a Muslim, to better understand interfaith dialogue between Muslims and Christians. The reflection draws on music and popular culture to explore the idea of faithful Christian witness, and how Christian hospitality can help Muslims and Christians to be better faith neighbours. The connections between Muslims and Christians are examined throughout this reflection.
