Conformational Sampling In Template Free Protein Loop Structure Modeling: An Overview, Yaohang Li Jan 2013

Conformational Sampling In Template Free Protein Loop Structure Modeling: An Overview, Yaohang Li

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Accurately modeling protein loops is an important step to predict three-dimensional structures as well as to understand functions of many proteins. Because of their high flexibility, modeling the three-dimensional structures of loops is difficult and is usually treated as a "mini protein folding problem" under geometric constraints. In the past decade, there has been remarkable progress in template-free loop structure modeling due to advances of computational methods as well as stably increasing number of known structures available in PDB. This mini review provides an overview on the recent computational approaches for loop structure modeling. In particular, we focus on the …

Gpu-Optimized Code For Long-Term Simulations Of Beam-Beam Effects In Colliders, Y. Roblin, V. Morozov, B. Terzić, M. Aturban, D. Ranjan, M. Zubair Jan 2013

Gpu-Optimized Code For Long-Term Simulations Of Beam-Beam Effects In Colliders, Y. Roblin, V. Morozov, B. Terzić, M. Aturban, D. Ranjan, M. Zubair

Computer Science Faculty Publications

We report on the development of the new code for long-term simulation of beam-beam effects in particle colliders. The underlying physical model relies on a matrix-based arbitrary-order symplectic particle tracking for beam transport and the Bassetti-Erskine approximation for beam-beam interaction. The computations are accelerated through a parallel implementation on a hybrid GPU/CPU platform. With the new code, a previously computationally prohibitive long-term simulations become tractable. We use the new code to model the proposed medium-energy electron-ion collider (MEIC) at Jefferson Lab.

An Analysis Of The Internal And External Motivations Of Hispanic Employees And The Corresponding Management Techniques, Taylor Alexander Cook Jan 2013

An Analysis Of The Internal And External Motivations Of Hispanic Employees And The Corresponding Management Techniques, Taylor Alexander Cook

Honors Theses

The study was to discover the proper management techniques of Hispanic employees in relation to their internal and external motivations. Through initial research on the subject based on previous work in the field, information was compiled in order to produce research on Hispanics’ values from their home countries and compare them to how these values have changed during their time in the United States, how the U.S. environment supports or impedes their motivations, how U.S. managers have attempted to actively tap into these motivations, and what techniques U.S. managers should utilize to better lead their Hispanic employees. A survey of …

Tax Credits In The Film Industry: Friend Or Foe? An Analysis Of The Cost-Benefit Relationship Between Tax Incentives And The States That Provide Them, Virginia Anne Gamble Jan 2013

Tax Credits In The Film Industry: Friend Or Foe? An Analysis Of The Cost-Benefit Relationship Between Tax Incentives And The States That Provide Them, Virginia Anne Gamble

Honors Theses

Today, tax incentives play a major role in the film industry. The primary research question of the thesis is the cost-benefit relationship between these incentives and the states that provide them. A further research question is how states can remain competitive amongst one another while maintaining this cost-benefit relationship. A review of scholarly articles, from economists and film office officials, reveals arguments for and against the incentive programs. Researching the history of these tax incentives in the United States also provides a basis for an opinion on the potential future incentives may have in the film industry. Many economists believe …

The Marketing And Branding Of The Church In America, Joshua David Gregory Jan 2013

The Marketing And Branding Of The Church In America, Joshua David Gregory

Honors Theses

The objective of my thesis is to examine the church and its efforts to market to the consumer-centric society that is America. In the United States, churches have evolved and changed in many ways since our ancestors came to America. In what we call the “Bible Belt,” the area from Texas to Florida, there is a church on nearly every comer. The question becomes “Is variation a necessity?” One might say that all religions offer the same transaction in that they exchange the meaning of life for some investment by the believer (Twitchell, 2004). My intention is to focus specifically …

A God Up Above, The Land Down Under, Jacob Nathaniel Hickman Jan 2013

A God Up Above, The Land Down Under, Jacob Nathaniel Hickman

Honors Theses

Manning Clark once very famously described Australians’ view of religion a shy hope in the heart.” This simple quotation is the most succinct way of illustrating their religious views in a way that accounts for the strong cultural influence that surrounds those beliefs. This characteristic of shyness takes precedence over eloquent announcements of religion and manifests itself through the “vaguely respectful recognition of an important if largely indistinct force, slightly shaped by the imagery of Christianity."^ Australia is a distinctive nation, as are its people and cultural idioms. Being a former British colony, Australia’s heritage in the English tradition of …

Book Review: Legal Pluralism And Empires, Paul Schiff Berman Jan 2013

Book Review: Legal Pluralism And Empires, Paul Schiff Berman

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

These are boom times for scholarship on legal pluralism. With the collapse of the bipolar Cold War order and the increasing recognition of transnational and international institutions and networks that operate distinct from nation-states, observers have used legal pluralism as a useful framework for conceptualizing a world of multiple overlapping assertions of authority. This framework challenges traditional international relations and international law scholarship that has long tended to focus almost exclusively on nation-states, their jurisdictional boundaries, and their interests, goals, and strategies. Legal pluralists insist that an assertion of jurisdiction is only one gambit in an ongoing interplay of social …

Perceptions Of Mississippi As A Tourist Destination, Kathleen Diane Kaiser Jan 2013

Perceptions Of Mississippi As A Tourist Destination, Kathleen Diane Kaiser

Honors Theses

Mississippi offers an array of tourism, but what do people who visit the state consider Mississippi has the best of? What are Mississippi’s less known tourism offerings? This study hints that those who are experienced with Mississippi more positively perceive the state as a tourist destination, whereas those who are not familiar with Mississippi’s offerings do not see the state as positively. A Qualtrics survey was conducted for students attending the University of Mississippi in the Lafayette/Oxford asking demographic questions and a survey that measured 16 tourism criteria on a 5 point Likert scale. SPSS 17.0 Independent sample t-tests were …

Matching Financial Reporting Requirements With Economic Substance: An Analysis Of Fasb Topic 840 (Leases) And Its Valuation Implications, Miller Childers Majors Jan 2013

Matching Financial Reporting Requirements With Economic Substance: An Analysis Of Fasb Topic 840 (Leases) And Its Valuation Implications, Miller Childers Majors

Honors Theses

Leasing has long been an attractive method to finance the use of property, plant, and equipment (PPE), but due to a call for change from the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and International Accounting Standards Board (lASB) the future of leasing will drastically change. Leasing has given lessees affordable way to acquire capital to generate operating profits and lessors tax advantages and protection against the obsolescence of PPE, and it is a pivotal financial tool that can benefit all of the involved parties when used properly. an However, the current GAAP standards fail to report the debt portion inherent within …

Is Legal Pragmatism Normative?, Garrett Lane Roberts Jan 2013

Is Legal Pragmatism Normative?, Garrett Lane Roberts

Honors Theses

Through the centuries people have been asking pivotal questions regarding law and legality. What is law? How should we interpret it? Who gets to decide? In what follows I will explore these questions in hope of gaining a greater understanding of the American legal system. Specifically, I will argue that legal pragmatism is in fact a normative theory that provides a good method of adjudication. This work will require that I investigate the jurisprudence of Oliver W. Holmes Jr. and modem legal pragmatism. Also, I will highlight some theories of legal realism and natural law theory.

The Use Of Alternative Dispute Resolution Techniques To Resolve Public Sector Bargaining Disputes, Charles B. Craver Jan 2013

The Use Of Alternative Dispute Resolution Techniques To Resolve Public Sector Bargaining Disputes, Charles B. Craver

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Labor organizations and employers have used various dispute resolution techniques to assist them with contract negotiations and contractual grievances. They have used negotiation, mediation, and arbitration since the 1800s. When the ADR movement was developed for conventional legal disputes, many of the techniques adopted were derived from the industrial relations movement. As states enacted public sector bargaining laws granting representational rights to state and local government employees, the parties had to determine how to resolve controversies over the terms to be included in new contracts and over grievances arising under existing accords. Most states refused to allow government personnel to …

The Impact Of Gender On Negotiation Performance, Charles B. Craver Jan 2013

The Impact Of Gender On Negotiation Performance, Charles B. Craver

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Individuals occasionally assume that women cannot negotiate as effectively as men, and when persons in positions of authority have such thoughts, it may induce them to discriminate against women when making employment decisions. In this article we explore the way in which men and women interact with others and the possible impact of behaviorial differences on negotiation performance. I describe how my Legal Negotiation course is taught, and compare the results achieved by men and women on the negotiation exercises assigned in my course. Over the past sixteen years, I have not had a single year in which there has …

Deferred Prosecutions And Corporate Governance: An Integrated Approach To Investigation And Reform, Lawrence A. Cunningham Jan 2013

Deferred Prosecutions And Corporate Governance: An Integrated Approach To Investigation And Reform, Lawrence A. Cunningham

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

When evaluating how to proceed against a corporate investigative target, law enforcement authorities often ignore the target’s governance arrangements, while subsequently negotiating or imposing governance requirements, especially in deferred prosecution agreements. Ignoring governance structures and processes amid investigation can be hazardous and implementing improvised reforms afterwards may have severe unintended consequences—particularly when prescribing standardized governance devices. Drawing, in part, on new lessons from three prominent cases—Arthur Andersen, AIG and Bristol-Myers Squibb—this Article criticizes prevailing discord and urges prosecutors to contemplate corporate governance at the outset and to articulate rationales for prescribed changes. Integrating the role of corporate governance into prosecutions …

Functional Government In 3-D, Robert L. Glicksman, Alejandro E. Camacho Jan 2013

Functional Government In 3-D, Robert L. Glicksman, Alejandro E. Camacho

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

The creation of new administrative agencies and the realignment of existing governmental authority are commonplace and high-stakes events, as illustrated by the recent creation of the Department of Homeland Security after 9/11 and of new financial regulatory agencies after the global recession of 2009. Scholars and policymakers have not devoted sufficient attention to this subject, failing to clearly identify the different dimensions along which government authority may be structured or to consider the relationships among them. Analysis of these institutional design issues typically also gives short shrift to whether authority should be allocated differently based on agency function. These failures …

General Law In Federal Court, Bradford R. Clark, Anthony J. Bellia Jr. Jan 2013

General Law In Federal Court, Bradford R. Clark, Anthony J. Bellia Jr.

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Conventional wisdom maintains that the Supreme Court banished general law from federal courts in 1938 in Erie Railroad Co. v. Tompkins when the Court overruled Swift v. Tyson. The narrative asserts that Swift viewed the common law as a “brooding omnipresence,” and authorized federal courts to disregard state common law in favor of general common law of their own choosing. The narrative continues that Erie constrained such judicial lawmaking by banishing general law from federal courts. Contrary to this account, Swift and Erie represent compatible conceptions of federal judicial power when each decision is understood in historical context. At the …

Cluster Ensemble-Based Image Segmentation, Xiaoru Wang, Junping Du, Shuzhe Wu, Xu Li, Fu Lo Jan 2013

Cluster Ensemble-Based Image Segmentation, Xiaoru Wang, Junping Du, Shuzhe Wu, Xu Li, Fu Lo

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Image segmentation is the foundation of computer vision applications. In this paper, we propose a new cluster ensemble-based image segmentation algorithm, which overcomes several problems of traditional methods. We make two main contributions in this paper. First, we introduce the cluster ensemble concept to fuse the segmentation results from different types of visual features effectively, which can deliver a better final result and achieve a much more stable performance for broad categories of images. Second, we exploit the PageRank idea from Internet applications and apply it to the image segmentation task. This can improve the final segmentation results by combining …

Toward A Field Of Intersectionality Studies: Theory, Applications, And Praxis, Sumi Cho, Kimberlé W. Crenshaw, Leslie Mccall Jan 2013

Toward A Field Of Intersectionality Studies: Theory, Applications, And Praxis, Sumi Cho, Kimberlé W. Crenshaw, Leslie Mccall

Faculty Scholarship

Intersectional insights and frameworks are put into practice in a multitude of highly contested, complex, and unpredictable ways. We group such engagements with intersectionality into three loosely defined sets of practices: applications of an intersectional framework or investigations of intersectional dynamics; debates about the scope and content of intersectionality as a theoretical and methodological paradigm; and political interventions employing an intersectional lens. We propose a template for fusing these three levels of engagement with intersectionality into a field of intersectional studies that emphasizes collaboration and literacy rather than unity. Our objective here is not to offer pat resolutions to all …

Automated Extraction And Classification Of Time-Frequency Contours In Humpback Vocalizations, Hui Ou, Whitlow W.L. Au, Lisa M. Zurk, Marc O. Lammers Jan 2013

Automated Extraction And Classification Of Time-Frequency Contours In Humpback Vocalizations, Hui Ou, Whitlow W.L. Au, Lisa M. Zurk, Marc O. Lammers

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

A time-frequency contour extraction and classification algorithm was created to analyze humpback whale vocalizations. The algorithm automatically extracted contours of whale vocalization units by searching for gray-level discontinuities in the spectrogram images. The unit-to-unit similarity was quantified by cross-correlating the contour lines. A library of distinctive humpback units was then generated by applying an unsupervised, cluster-based learning algorithm. The purpose of this study was to provide a fast and automated feature selection tool to describe the vocal signatures of animal groups. This approach could benefit a variety of applications such as species description, identification, and evolution of song structures. The …

Correlates Of Consistent Condom Use Among Female Entertainment Workers In Shanghai, China: A Repeated Measures Analysis, Xiushi Yang, Guomei Xia Jan 2013

Correlates Of Consistent Condom Use Among Female Entertainment Workers In Shanghai, China: A Repeated Measures Analysis, Xiushi Yang, Guomei Xia

Sociology & Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Female entertainment workers (FEWs) in China are at increased risk of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, but correlates of their risky sexual behaviour remain poorly understood. Using data from a series of four surveys, this paper employs repeated measures analysis to identify individual and social correlates of consistent condom use among FEWs in Shanghai. Results reveal that both individual cognitive and social influence factors are statistically significant in their bivariate relationships to consistent condom use with a stable or non-stable partner; only prevention motivation and perceived self-efficacy in condom use remain significant in the multiple regressions. When individual and …

Rural-Urban Migration And Mental And Sexual Health: A Case Study In Southwestern China, Xiushi Yang Jan 2013

Rural-Urban Migration And Mental And Sexual Health: A Case Study In Southwestern China, Xiushi Yang

Sociology & Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Massive rural–urban temporary migration has taken place amid China's rapid economic growth and development. Much has been written about the economic causes and consequences of this massive migration; less studied are the potential health and behavioral impacts of migration on migrants. Using data from a population-based sample survey conducted in southwestern China, this paper examines the potential impact of rural–urban migration and post-migration urban living on migrants' mental health and sexual risk behavior. The results suggest that regardless of places of origin and destination temporary migrants had on average poorer mental health and riskier sexual behavior than non-migrants. Compared to …

Latino-Indigenous Influence On U.S. Catholicism In Demetria Martínez's Confessions Of A Berlitz-Tape Chicana, Elizabeth Coonrod Martínez

Diálogo

The ideas presented by New Mexico novelist-writer Demetria Martínez in her collection of columns, Confessions of a Berlitz-tape Chicana, explore how she espouses and represents Latino Catholicism, applied as a practice rooted in indigenous culture merged with Catholic imagery during the colonial era. Her writing and stances indicate that Latino Catholicism is built on principles of community and social justice. Critical commentary is drawn from Chicana/o writers and recent texts on Mexican-American spirituality.

La Tradición Conchera: Historical Process Of Danza And Catholicism, Jennie Luna Jan 2013

La Tradición Conchera: Historical Process Of Danza And Catholicism, Jennie Luna

Diálogo

La Tradición Conchera (Conchero tradition), often used synonymously with Danza Azteca (Aztec Dance), has profound and complex roots connected to both an indigenous and colonial trajectory. This article presents a concise map of this history and the ties to the Catholic Church, which has been both a process of syncretism and synergy. The syncretism of Indigenous world views with the Catholic Church has had elements of preservation and decimation as demonstrated within the complex history of Danza. This article focuses on the Post-Cuauhtémoc origins of Danza (dances) and its relationship with the Church, State, and Indigenous communities.
