Players: Gender And Sexuality In The Universe Of Don Delillo, Alexandria Nicole Tidwell
Players: Gender And Sexuality In The Universe Of Don Delillo, Alexandria Nicole Tidwell
Honors Theses
This project considers Don DeLillo’s body of work (specifically the texts Cosmopolis, Players, White Noise and Libra) in terms of gender and sexuality, two areas often overlooked by the current body of scholarship on the writer. My analysis is informed by contemporary queer theory — that is to say, an assumption of the constructed nature of gender and sexual difference runs through the work. I begin by defining two intertextual systems at work within (My first chapter deals with the capitalist system of Cosmopolis and Players, a closed network serving to mirror and critique modernist assumptions; and my second chapter …
Memphis Carnival Traditions: Maintaining Identity In A Changing Society, Katherine Hitt Kenwright
Memphis Carnival Traditions: Maintaining Identity In A Changing Society, Katherine Hitt Kenwright
Honors Theses
The Memphis Cotton Carnival began in 1931 as a way to use the main product of Memphis—cotton—to bring the city out of the Great Depression. Through various incarnations, Carnival has endured and today stands as one of the longest-standing traditions in the city. Its founders envisioned a meeting of the minds of the city's industry leaders accompanied by a series of events as a celebration for Memphis residents, as well as a way to increase tourism in the city. Cotton Carnival and Cotton Maker's jubilee, a celebration started in 1935 for the African American community in Memphis, have changed and …
An Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Incorporating Virtual Cadaver Study On Student Performance In Human Anatomy And Physiology, Mary Katherine Kerce
An Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Incorporating Virtual Cadaver Study On Student Performance In Human Anatomy And Physiology, Mary Katherine Kerce
Honors Theses
In an ideal Human Anatomy & Physiology (Human A&P) laboratory, students would use human cadavers for study. However, due to the limited supply of human cadavers and high cost of constructing and maintaining laboratory facilities, many institutions choose to use various animal organs and models to teach human anatomy. Dissections are an irreplaceable tool to help students understand human anatomy because models often have garish colors that allow easy discrimination of structures but do not show the colors and textures associated with real tissue. Additionally, cadavers, organs. and models must remain within the laboratory, so students have limited access. The …
Beyond Technique: An Examination Of Musical And Textual Expression From Baroque To Twentieth Century, Charles Anthony Moore
Beyond Technique: An Examination Of Musical And Textual Expression From Baroque To Twentieth Century, Charles Anthony Moore
Honors Theses
Although vocal technique is an important element in the execution of any type of good singing, it is only meant to facilitate the transmission of a message, emotion or feeling. All composers put great thought into conveying this message through their settings, and it is up to the performer to follow their directions and to interpret independently when there are none given. In this regard, the vocalist becomes the conduit of the composer, bringing their wishes to life and adding their own personality and interpretive slants. Additionally, there are conventions of each specific period to which the pieces belong that …
Economic Emancipation In The Plantation South: Women In William Faulkner, Margaret Mitchell, Ernest Gaines, And Sherley Anne Williams, Rosemary Moak
Economic Emancipation In The Plantation South: Women In William Faulkner, Margaret Mitchell, Ernest Gaines, And Sherley Anne Williams, Rosemary Moak
Honors Theses
This thesis is intended to investigate women’s plantation economies from the varying perspectives of Margaret Mitchell, William Faulkner, Sherley Anne Williams, and Ernest Gaines. The materials used for research were primary texts: Gone With the Wind, The Unvanquished, Dessa Rose, and The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman^ along with multiple secondary sources. Faulkner and Mitchell show white plantation mistresses take advantage of their newfound independence and economic opportunities due to the absence of the patriarch during the Civil War. While these plantation mistresses prove to be economic powers, their slaves remain in traditional roles. They are depicted to be content …
Sex Differences In Marathon Running With Advanced Age: Physiology Or Participation?, Sandra K. Hunter, Alyssa A. Stevens
Sex Differences In Marathon Running With Advanced Age: Physiology Or Participation?, Sandra K. Hunter, Alyssa A. Stevens
Exercise Science Faculty Research and Publications
The sex difference in marathon performance increases with age and place of the finisher, even at the elite level. Sociological factors may explain the increased sex gap, but there is limited empirical evidence for specific factors.
Purpose: The purposes of this study were to determine the sex difference in velocity for the marathon across the place of finisher (1st–10th place) with advanced age and (2) to determine the association between the sex difference in participation (ratio of men-to-women finishers) and the sex difference in running velocity.
Methods: Running times of the first 10 placed men and women in the 5-yr …
Ph Dependent Proteolysis Of Neural Cadherin, Candice Ashton Walters
Ph Dependent Proteolysis Of Neural Cadherin, Candice Ashton Walters
Honors Theses
Cadherins are the primary calcium-dependent cell-cell adhesion molecule and are essential to vertebrates. They ensure the integrity of epithelial barriers that allow for maintenance of homeostasis in humans and protection against invading microorganisms. A common invader capable of forging past this line of defense is the fungus Candida albicans. The main virulence mechanism of C. alibans in acidic environments is its secreted aspartyl proteinases (SAPs), which are hydrolytic enzymes that degrade cadherin-mediated cell adhesion leading to infection of the underlying tissues. Cadherin is normally resistant to cleavage by proteases due to stabilization of the protein structure by bound calcium and …

The Impact Of The Low-Income Housing Tax Credit And Its Role In The Future Of Affordable Housing, Sophia Yates Smith
The Impact Of The Low-Income Housing Tax Credit And Its Role In The Future Of Affordable Housing, Sophia Yates Smith
Honors Theses
The purpose of this paper is to study the evolution and goals of the government in providing low-income housing as well as the means taken to achieve those goals in order to understand the current system. The ever-changing nature of the political, social and economic landscape of the country dictates that the role of government in providing lowhousing must adapt to the times. This paper will address questions about the future of the program such as the following. Should the federal government continue finance low-income housing through indirect subsidies financed through the tax code or were the previous direct subsidies …
Screening Legal Claims Based On Third-Party Litigation Finance Agreements And Other Signals Of Quality, Michael B. Abramowicz, Omer Alper
Screening Legal Claims Based On Third-Party Litigation Finance Agreements And Other Signals Of Quality, Michael B. Abramowicz, Omer Alper
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
The advent of third-party litigation finance introduces a new gatekeeper to the legal process. Before deciding to lend money to a plaintiff, a litigation finance company will conduct at least some review and make an assessment of the quality of the case.
Since litigation finance loans are generally nonrecourse, a litigation finance company is likely to refuse to loan money to plaintiffs with the weakest cases. Such voluntary claim screening may improve social welfare by reducing the incidence of frivolous claims. But the volume of frivolous claims may still be higher than it would be in a world without third-party …

This Article examines the modern utility of the Second Amendment's guarantee of "the right to keep and bear arms" in light of the phenomenon of modern crime, particularly black-on-black violence in urban America. Although many advocates of gun control have argued that crime in modern cities is a reason for modifying or severely truncating the right to have arms, the Authors argue that the right to have arms and the Second Amendment's notion of a universal militia can be the basis of a new partnership between police and citizens in urban America. This new partnership can, if properly developed, be …
Competition Agencies With Complex Policy Portfolios: Divide Or Conquer?, William E. Kovacic, David A. Hyman
Competition Agencies With Complex Policy Portfolios: Divide Or Conquer?, William E. Kovacic, David A. Hyman
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
Antitrust law has been adopted by 120 jurisdictions worldwide. In more than half of these jurisdictions, the agency charged with enforcing antitrust law also has other responsibilities. The assignment of multiple regulatory tasks can affect the performance of a competition agency in complex and subtle ways. We present a framework for analyzing the consequences of creating public bodies with complex policy portfolios. Using examples from across the administrative state, we analyze the forces that shape the content of an agency’s policy duties, and how the portfolio of assigned duties affects the way an agency approaches its assigned tasks, and its …
Justice Kennedy’S Use Of Sources Of The Original Meaning Of The Constitution, Gregory E. Maggs
Justice Kennedy’S Use Of Sources Of The Original Meaning Of The Constitution, Gregory E. Maggs
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
The essay concerns one aspect of Justice Kennedy’s jurisprudence, namely, his use of some of the principal sources of the original meaning of the Constitution in his written opinions. By the term “sources of the original meaning of the Constitution,” I refer to the records from the Federal Constitutional Convention of 1787, the records of the state ratifying conventions, the Federalist Papers, dictionaries showing usage of language during the Founding period, and the acts of the First Congress. The goals of this essay are first to identify, quote, and describe passages in which Justice Kennedy has cited these sources, and …

The 'Federal Law Of Marriage': Deference, Deviation, And Doma, W. Burlette Carter
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
The article discusses the history of federal inroads into marriage by examining federal interventions during the nineteenth and early twentieth century, argues that, in some cases but not all, marriages' federal benefits are indeed intended to support natural procreation, argues that DOMA's underlying statutes are key to ascertaining the purposes of federal marriage benefits and burdens, distinguishes sexual orientation discrimination from race discrimination and offers a proposal for dealing with equal protection challenges to denials of marriage rights to same sex couples. The proposal, which depends upon dual standards of review, recognizes the historical denial of family rights to same …
Functional Implications Of Impaired Control Of Submaximal Hip Flexion Following Stroke, Allison S. Hyngstrom, Sandra K. Hunter
Functional Implications Of Impaired Control Of Submaximal Hip Flexion Following Stroke, Allison S. Hyngstrom, Sandra K. Hunter
Exercise Science Faculty Research and Publications
Introduction: We quantified sub-maximal torque regulation during low to moderate intensity isometric hip flexion contractions in individuals with stroke and the associations with leg function. Methods: 10 participants with chronic stroke and 10 controls performed isometric hip flexion contractions at 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 40% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) in paretic, non-paretic, and control legs. Results: Participants with stroke had larger torque fluctuations (coefficient of variation, CV), for both the paretic and non-paretic legs, than controls (Pr2 =0.45) and Berg Balance Score (r2=0.38). At 5% MVC, there were larger torque fluctuations in the …

Changes In Neurochemicals Within The Ventrolateral Medullary Respiratory Column In Awake Goats After Carotid Body Denervation, Justin Robert Miller, Suzanne E. Neumueller, Clarissa Muere, Samantha Olesiak, Lawrence Pan, Matthew R. Hodges, Hubert V. Forster
Physical Therapy Faculty Research and Publications
A current and major unanswered question is why the highly sensitive central CO2/H+ chemoreceptors do not prevent hypoventilation-induced hypercapnia following carotid body denervation (CBD). Because perturbations involving the carotid bodies affect central neuromodulator and/or neurotransmitter levels within the respiratory network, we tested the hypothesis that after CBD there is an increase in inhibitory and/or a decrease in excitatory neurochemicals within the ventrolateral medullary column (VMC) in awake goats. Microtubules for chronic use were implanted bilaterally in the VMC within or near the pre-Bötzinger Complex (preBötC) through which mock cerebrospinal fluid (mCSF) was dialyzed. Effluent mCSF was collected …

Ventilator associated pneumonia is a common problem with the mechanically ventilated population. Mortality, hospital stay, and cost increase with ventilator associated pneumonia. The importance of tackling this problem has spurred an effort within the medical community to prevent the onset of VAP. Upon years of study, a basic bundle of care has been recommended by the IHI for implementation in the hospital so that the incidence of VAP would decrease. This paper will focus on the nurse’s role in implementing the bundle of care. The paper will explore the different interventions and will cover the evidence behind the practice. The …

Literature has long suggested a correlation between family history and alcohol dependence; heredity plays a role in risk for alcohol dependence. To investigate the influence of the personality trait neuroticism as a moderating factor of the relationship between family history of alcohol dependence, and an individual’s alcohol consumption, analyses were conducted in the Fall 2011 Spit for Science cohort. Survey questions examined the binary variable of whether participants reported a family history of drinking problems, as well as the continuous variable measuring the number of alcoholic drinks participants had consumed in the past 30 days. There were a total of …

Facebook is used by approximately 1.06 billion(Craig,2013) to keep in touch with family and friends. However, the question remains whether Facebook is helpful or harmful to people’s well being. According to a research study conducted by Gonzales and Hancock (2010), Facebook use enhances self-esteem by providing multiple opportunities for selective self-presentation through photos and personal details. Another research study by Twenge, Freeman and Campbell (2012) found that participants who spent time on social network sites endorsed more positive self-views. While some research indicates that Facebook has a positive effect on the user other studies suggest that Facebook use is detrimental. …

This essay focuses on this second set of issues arising out of the current discussion about the meaning and status of the term “original text.” Following a brief introduction to recent discussion, the essay will sketch usage of the term “original text” in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, assess proposals for de ning or indicating what it is that NT textual criticism is (or ought to be) attempting to recover, discuss some collateral issues associated with those proposals, and note the larger ideological context of the discussion.
Measuring Differentials In Communication Research: Issues With Multicollinearity In Three Methods, Sonny Rosenthal
Measuring Differentials In Communication Research: Issues With Multicollinearity In Three Methods, Sonny Rosenthal
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
Models of communication processes sometimes require the computation of the difference between two variables. For example, information insufficiency is the difference between what people know and what they think they need to know about an issue, and it can motivate information seeking and processing. Common methods that compute this differential may bias model estimates as a function of the correlation between the differentiated variables and other variables in the model. This article describes Citation the general form of Cohen and Cohen's (1983) analysis of partial variance for computing differentials and analyzes simulated data to contrast that method with two alternative …

School Administrators' Beliefs Regarding The Relationship Between School Improvements And Formal School Registration, Harm P. Witten
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
In 2004, the Government of Western Australia introduced an inspection-type formal school registration process for Non-Government (Independent) Schools, fulfilling the legislative requirement of a new School Education Act of 1999 (Part 4, Sec.159). This formal school registration process featured twelve criteria that are used to evaluate the quality of education. The government claimed that it would ensure a good education for all students in Western Australian, including those students enrolled in Independent Schools. However, very little is known about this formal school registration process, the twelve criteria used in it, or even if school administrators believe that it has helped …

"The Worry That You Are Yourself": Darl's Unforgivable Neurodiversity In As I Lay Dying, Neal Hallgarth
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
"This paper is concerned with the character of Darl Bundren and the repeated motif of madness in William Faulkner's As I Lay Dying. Possible psychiatric explanations for Darl's madness, including linguistic evidence for his psychotic breakdown, are explored. The paper does not agree with the critical use of words such as "insane" or "crazy" as the book itself questions the verity of such labels. Critical analyses concerning Darl tend to be sympathetic but use derogatory language when defending the character. Articles related to the relatively new idea of neurodiversity will counter the backhanded sympathy with which the critics regard Darl. …
