On Quotients Of Ith Affine Surface Areas, Chang-Jian Zhao Jan 2013

On Quotients Of Ith Affine Surface Areas, Chang-Jian Zhao

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Following the volume difference function, we first introduce the notion of the affine surface area quotient function. We establish Brunn--Minkowski type inequalities for the affine surface area quotient function, which in special cases yield some well-known results.

Attractors For Parabolic Problems In Weighted Spaces, Xiaojun Li, Ying Tang Jan 2013

Attractors For Parabolic Problems In Weighted Spaces, Xiaojun Li, Ying Tang

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of parabolic equations with singular initial data in weighted spaces L^r_{\delta(x)}(\Omega) where \delta(x) is the distance to the boundary. We first establish the existence of the attractor for that equation in L^r_{\delta(x)}(\Omega) and then show the existence of the exponential attractor in L^2_{\delta(x)}(\Omega). In contrast to our previous results, we get the existence of attractors in weak topology spaces.

Diagnosis Of Schistosoma Mansoni Without The Stool: Comparison Of Three Diagnostic Tests To Detect Schiostosoma Mansoni Infection From Filtered Urine In Zambia, Nilanjan Lodh, James C. L. Mwansa, Mabel M. Mutengo, Clive J. Shiff Jan 2013

Shiff

Clinical Lab Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Diagnosis for intestinal Schistosoma mansoni lacks sensitivity and is arduous to conduct. The standard diagnostic tests, Kato-Katz (KK) and circulating cathodic antigen (CCA) both lack sensitivity and with KK, require obtaining, transporting, and examining fresh stool. We compared diagnostic efficacy of KK, CCA, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect S. mansoni infection (species-specific DNA) from 89 filtered urine samples collected in Zambia. The PCR was the strongest indicator of positive cases with sensitivity and specificity of 100% in comparison to CCA (67% and 60%) and KK (50% and 100%). High positive and negative predictive values (100%) were also indicative …

Isoclinic Extensions Of Lie Algebras, Hamid Mohammadzadeh, Ali Reza Salemkar, Zahra Riyahi Jan 2013

Isoclinic Extensions Of Lie Algebras, Hamid Mohammadzadeh, Ali Reza Salemkar, Zahra Riyahi

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this article we introduce the notion of the equivalence relation, isoclinism, on the central extensions of Lie algebras, and determine all central extensions occurring in an isoclinism class of a given central extension. We also show that under some conditions, the concepts of isoclinism and isomorphism between the central extensions of finite dimensional Lie algebras are identical. Finally, the connection between isoclinic extensions and the Schur multiplier of Lie algebras are discussed.

Bbm Equation With Non-Constant Coefficients, Amutha Senthilkumar Jan 2013

Bbm Equation With Non-Constant Coefficients, Amutha Senthilkumar

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this article, a model for the propagation of long waves over an uneven bottom is considered. We provide both theoretical and numerical results for this model. We also discuss the changes which occur in a solitary wave solution of the BBM equation as it travels through a channel of decreasing depth.

Labelings Of Type (1,1,1) For Toroidal Fullerenes, Martin Baca, Muhammad Numan, Ayesha Shabbir Jan 2013

Labelings Of Type (1,1,1) For Toroidal Fullerenes, Martin Baca, Muhammad Numan, Ayesha Shabbir

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper we deal with the problem of labeling the vertices, edges, and faces of a toroidal fullerene H_m^n with mn hexagons by the consecutive integers from 1 up to V(H_m^n) + E(H_m^n) + F(H_m^n) in such a way that the set of face-weights of 6-sided faces forms an arithmetic progression with common difference d, where by face-weight we mean the sum of the label of that face and the labels of vertices and edges surrounding that face. The paper examines the existence of such labelings for several differences d.

Bifurcations And Parametric Representations Of Traveling Wave Solutions For The Green--Naghdi Equations, Shengqiang Tang, Libing Zeng, Dahe Feng Jan 2013

Bifurcations And Parametric Representations Of Traveling Wave Solutions For The Green--Naghdi Equations, Shengqiang Tang, Libing Zeng, Dahe Feng

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

By using the bifurcation theory of dynamical systems to study the dynamical behavior of the Green--Naghdi equations, the existence of solitary wave solutions along with smooth periodic traveling wave solutions is obtained. Under different regions of parametric spaces, various sufficient conditions to guarantee the existence of the above solutions are given. Some exact and explicit parametric representations of traveling wave solutions are constructed.

On Nearly Kenmotsu Manifolds, Behzad Najafi, Niloufar Hosseinpour Kashani Jan 2013

On Nearly Kenmotsu Manifolds, Behzad Najafi, Niloufar Hosseinpour Kashani

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We prove that on a nearly Kenmotsu manifold a second-order symmetric closed recurrent tensor is a multiple of the associated metric tensor. We then find the necessary condition under which a vector field on a nearly Kenmotsu manifold will be a strict contact or Killing vector field. Finally, we prove that every \phi-recurrent nearly Kenmotsu manifold is an Einstein manifold and every locally \phi-recurrent nearly Kenmotsu manifold is a manifold of constant curvature -1 .

The Impact Of Work-Limiting Disabilities On Earnings And Income Mobility, Nicholas A. Jolly Jan 2013

The Impact Of Work-Limiting Disabilities On Earnings And Income Mobility, Nicholas A. Jolly

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

This article uses the 1968–2007 waves of the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) to examine how work-limiting disabilities influence the intragenerational earnings and income mobility of individuals. The results show that work-limiting disabilities increase the probability of downward mobility for several years after onset. Furthermore, the probability of being in the bottom portions of the distributions increases significantly, not only during the year of onset but also for at least 10 years afterwards. These results are more pronounced for those individuals suffering from a disability that is more chronic or severe in nature. Income from spousal earnings and government …

Intertemporal Valuation Of River Restoration, Andrew G. Meyer Jan 2013

Intertemporal Valuation Of River Restoration, Andrew G. Meyer

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

Willingness to pay for an environmental improvement is a function of how long it takes to deliver the improvement. To measure the effect of time on benefits, I utilize a discrete choice experiment that includes an attribute for delay until the improvement occurs and simultaneously estimate discount rates and valuation parameters. I estimate the present value of immediate and delayed Minnesota River Basin improvements using discount rates directly estimated from the econometric model. Compared to an immediate river basin cleanup, Minnesota residents lose almost half of the benefits when cleanup is delayed by 5 years.

Disrupting Aviation: An Exploratory Study Of The Opportunities And Risks Of Tablet Computers In Commercial Flight Operations, Matthew Boyne Jan 2013

Disrupting Aviation: An Exploratory Study Of The Opportunities And Risks Of Tablet Computers In Commercial Flight Operations, Matthew Boyne

Theses and Dissertations

Commercial flight operational safety has dramatically improved in the last 30 years because of enhanced crew coordination, communication, leadership and team development. Technology insertion into cockpit operations, however, has been shown to create crew distractions, resulting in flight safety risks, limited use given policy limitations and difficulty in establishing standard operating procedures. With the recent introduction of tablet computers into the flight cockpit as a substitute for paper-based manuals and navigation charts, the risk of human error may be increased. Though portable electronics, known as electronic flight bags, have been present of the flight deck for a decade, introduction of …

Attention Must Be Paid: A Critical Study Of The Non-Traditional Leading Man In Twentieth Century Drama, Trevin Cooper

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The role of the non-traditional leading man has painted a strong image which mirrors the cultural development of our identities; we turn to these men/characters to understand who, or why, we are. Their contributions require acknowledgement. This thesis is a study of the vital role the non-traditional leading man has played in the evolution of twentieth-century theatre. It will examine, through the use of ten plays, one from every decade of the twentieth century, and twelve male roles, the theory that some of the greatest leading male characters in modern theatre are not epitomized by the qualities identified with the …

August Wilson's Gem Of The Ocean A Dramaturgical Case Study, Rebecca Barringhaus Jan 2013

August Wilson's Gem Of The Ocean A Dramaturgical Case Study, Rebecca Barringhaus

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 2004, August Wilson completed Gem of the Ocean, the first play in his Pittsburgh Cycle. Seven years later, the University of Central Florida’s production of Gem of the Ocean went against what most consider traditional staging. With a Russian born director and a mostly white production team, playing to a predominately white audience, what are the challenges of accurately transforming the text to the stage, while still providing a truthful telling of a story? The following is a case study based on the idea of “active dramaturgy” or, more specifically, cultivating an atmosphere within the production that relies on …

Applying Historiography To Fictional Works: A Case Study Of William Inge's Picnic, Nicholas Murphy Jan 2013

Applying Historiography To Fictional Works: A Case Study Of William Inge's Picnic, Nicholas Murphy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Historiography is the writing of history based on the examination of sources and synthesizing these sources into a narrative that will stand the test of critical methods. Historiography is not the study of history but rather provides a tool to analyze each written account of a historical event. The concepts of historiography are traditionally reserved for the study of factual based history and not for fictional events or people. However, just as history seems to evolve over time, authors also revise their fiction work. If history is adapted and changed over time to fulfill the historian’s desires, can fictional works …

Belief And Christmas: Performing Belief And The Theory And Practice Of Christmas Performance, Brenna Nicely Jan 2013

Belief And Christmas: Performing Belief And The Theory And Practice Of Christmas Performance, Brenna Nicely

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the United States, Christmastime has become a time of tension between the holy ideals of family togetherness, childhood innocence, and goodwill towards men and commercial idolatry. Christ and Santa Claus are pitted against each other in the war on Christmas between religion and secularism instead of feasting together on ham and figgy pudding in the traditional fashion. While many would agree that the everyday realities of the Christmas season do not often live up to the ideals imposed upon the holiday, few are able to tell why this is so or even trace the roots of their discontent. In …
