The development of a suitable experimental cell model to study HIV latency in primary cells could have a massive effect on the current approaches to eradicate virus in latently infected cells. The main proposal of this paper is to develop an in vitro HIV cell model that represents HIV latency in vivo, then to create a more effective viral vector in order to target HIV reservoirs. For this goal, a directed evolution method is suggested to be used in order to mutate the AAV cap gene to generate a recombinant AAV vector that is capable of infecting primary resting CD4+ …

In an ongoing project involving the synthesis of functionalized poly(arylene ether)s that carry pendent phenyl sulfonyl groups, the introduction of an iodo group was desired. The effects of fluorine position on the electrophilic iodination of the 2,4-, 2,6-, and 2,5- and 3,5-isomers of difluorodiphenylsulfone, DFDPS were studied. The relative reactivity, toward EAS, was probed via 13C NMR spectroscopy and verified experimentally by iodination with N-iodosuccinimide. The product mixtures and corresponding structures indicated that intermediate stability did not always correlate to reactivity. Model studies were also conducted on DFDPS isomers that successfully carry in iodo groups in a pendent …

Early research on the Black family implied an enormous lack of African-American father presence and involvement among African-American fathers. However, more current research negates those findings by highlighting the contributions African-American fathers make when parenting their children (Coley, 2003; Cooper, 2009; Mandara, Murray & Joyner, 2005). In spite of facing unique psychological and social challenges, such as disproportionate levels of poverty, and race related social barriers, such as the invisibility syndrome (Franklin & Boyd-Franklin, 2000), researchers who have studied the African-American father-daughter dyad have discovered that this relationship has many benefits for African-American girls, including cognitive and academic enhancements, reductions …

Mindfulness-based interventions are receiving a great deal of attention from clinicians and researchers and research in this field is increasing dramatically in the past decade. Much of this research is consistent with positive psychotherapeutic outcomes for a wide range of presenting clinical issues. As with any seemingly successful psychotherapeutic treatment, it can be helpful to understand the processes of change underlying mindfulness-based interventions that are responsible for observed positive outcomes. In doing so, the effective components of an intervention can be refined and perfected, while components deemed unneeded can be appropriately discarded. This dissertation critically reviews the literature's current understanding …

The conjoined relationship photography has with technology complicates conversations about photography as art because this relationship allows photography to be used interchangeably for practical, social, and commercial purposes, as well as for art. A theory of art for photography is needed in order to accurately separate photographic art from vernacular photography. I show that photography has a unique relationship with technology, which has served to promote the rapid democratization of photography, and that the photographic arts have been treated differently from the greater fine arts. This is especially evident when photographic portraiture is compared with painted portraiture. I offer my …

The U937 cell line is an oncogenic human monocyte cell line. These monocytes have the potential of differentiating into either macrophages or dendritic cells (Lawrence et al., 2011). This differentiation pattern depends on the characteristics of the tissue microenvironment (Kigerl et al., 2009). PMA (Phorbol 12-Myristate 13-Acetate) is a phorbol ester capable of transforming monocytic cells toward the macrophage pathway. Upon treatment with PMA, U937 cells under-go a series of morphological and functional changes. Traditionally monocytic cell lines are used as a model of macrophage function, because current human macrophage cell lines require a T-cell conditioned growth medium and contact …

The locus coeruleus (LC) in the brainstem senses alterations in CO2/pH and influences ventilatory adjustments that restore blood gas values to starting levels in bullfrogs (Lithobates catesbeianus). We hypothesized that neurons of the bullfrog LC are sensitive to changes in CO2/pH and that chemosensitive responses are intrinsic to individual neurons. In addition, we hypothesized putative respiratory control neurons of the bullfrog LC would be stimulated by hypercapnic acidosis within physiological ranges of PCO2/pH. 84% of LC neurons depolarized and increased firing rates during exposure to hypercapnic acidosis (HA). A pH dose response …

An effective approach to timing and power optimization for single clocking and multiple clocking dynamic CMOS designs is presented in this thesis. For the single-clocking scheme dynamic CMOS sub-blocks can be replaced by static CMOS and mixed-dynamic-static CMOS for power minimization. For the multiple-clocking scheme the delay of data ready for use plays more important role than its clock pulse in timing optimization. Power minimization can be achieved by implementing dynamic CMOS sub-blocks with static or mixed-dynamic-static CMOS. In comparison with the benchmark 16-bit carry select adder in dynamic CMOS, the critical path delay is reduced by 41.1% using the …

We investigate detection mechanisms of real time sensors, based on ultra-thin (single and bi-atomic layer thick) and ultra-narrow (~1nm) graphene nanoribbons (GNRs), using first principle based theoretical methods. In the first part of this study we study the electronic and magnetic structures of bilayer graphene nanoribbons (BGNRs) beyond the conventional AA and AB stackings, by using density functional theory within both local density and generalized gradient approximations (LDA and GGA). Our results show that, irrespective of the method chosen, stacking arrangements other than the conventional ones are most stable, and result in significant modification of BGNRs characeristics. The most stable …
