Use Of Biopolymer Entrapped Sulfate Reducing Bacteria And Metal Nanoparticles For Effective Aqueous Sulfate Removal, Seydou Cisse

Environmental and Conservation Sciences

Sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) isolated from activated sludge were used to investigate sulfate removal from aqueous solution using calcium alginate entrapped SRB in batch studies with ethanol and lactose as the carbon sources. The interferences of pH, temperature, Al3+, Cu2+, and Zn2+ on sulfate removal were also investigated. Further, sulfate removal experiments were conducted with co-entrapped SRB and nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI) and separately entrapped SRB and NZVI. Results indicate that EntSRB can effectively remove sulfate from aqueous solution. 88-95% sulfate removal was achieved. Both ethanol and lactose worked well as carbon sources for entrapped bacteria. Interference studies indicated low …

A Robust Sound Perception Model Suitable For Neuromorphic Implementation., Martin Coath, Sadique Sheik, Elisabetta Chicca, Giacomo Indiveri, Susan L. Denham, Thomas Wennekers

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

We have recently demonstrated the emergence of dynamic feature sensitivity through exposure to formative stimuli in a real-time neuromorphic system implementing a hybrid analog/digital network of spiking neurons. This network, inspired by models of auditory processing in mammals, includes several mutually connected layers with distance-dependent transmission delays and learning in the form of spike timing dependent plasticity, which effects stimulus-driven changes in the network connectivity. Here we present results that demonstrate that the network is robust to a range of variations in the stimulus pattern, such as are found in naturalistic stimuli and neural responses. This robustness is a property …

Self-Assembled Surfactant Cyclic Peptide Nanostructures As Stabilizing Agents, Dindyal Mandal, Rakesh Tiwari, Amir Nasrolahi Shirazi, Donghoon Oh, Guofeng Ye, Antara Banerjee, Arpita Yadav, Keykavous Parang

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

A number of cyclic peptides including [FR](4), [FK](4), [WK](5), [CR](4), [AK](4), and [WR](n) (n = 3-5) containing L-amino acids were produced using solid-phase peptide synthesis. We hypothesized that an optimal balance of hydrophobicity and charge could generate self-assembled nanostructures in aqueous solution by intramolecular and/or intermolecular interactions. Among all the designed peptides, [WR](n) (n = 3-5) generated self-assembled vesicle-like nanostructures at room temperature as shown by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and/or dynamic light scattering (DLS). This class of peptides represents the first report of surfactant-like cyclic peptides that self-assemble into nanostructures. A plausible mechanistic insight into …

Revisiting The Fundamentals In The Design And Control Of Nanoparticulate Colloids In The Frame Of Soft Chemistry, Vuk Uskoković

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

This review presents thoughts on some of the fundamental features of conceptual models applied in the design of fine particles in the frames of colloid and soft chemistry. A special emphasis is placed on the limitations of these models, an acknowledgment of which is vital in improving their intricacy and effectiveness in predicting the outcomes of the corresponding experimental settings. Thermodynamics of self-assembly phenomena illustrated on the examples of protein assembly and micellization is analyzed in relation to the previously elaborated thesis that each self-assembly in reality presents a co-assembly, since it implies a mutual reorganization of the assembling system …

Synthesis, Characterization, And Application Of Low And Reduced Band Gap Thieno[3,4-B]Pyrazine-Based Materials, Michael Edward Mulholland

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Conjugated polymers are a class of materials receiving significant interest due to their unique combination of optical and electronic properties found in inorganics with the flexibility and processability of traditional organic plastics. These materials have become popular in application to electronic devices such as organic photovoltaics (OPVs), organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), sensors, electrochromics and field effect transistors (FETs). As the energetic gap between frontier orbitals, the band gap (Eg) is largely responsible for the energetic transitions of these materials and thus tuning of this parameter is of great interest. A popular method to reducing Eg is through the use of …

Synthesis, Photophysics, And Nonlinear Absorption Of Platinum (Ii) And Iridium (Iii) Complexes, Zhongjing Li Jan 2013

Synthesis, Photophysics, And Nonlinear Absorption Of Platinum (Ii) And Iridium (Iii) Complexes, Zhongjing Li

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Square planar d8 platinum(II) complexes and octahedral d6 iridium(III) complexes were synthesized. Their photophysics were studied in detail. Structure-property relationship was studied by varying the substitution on the ligands or the π-conjugation extent of the ligands. In Chapter 2, bipyridyl platinum(II) bisstilbenylacetylide complexes (2-1 – 2-6) with different auxiliary substituents on the stilbenylacetylide ligands were synthesized. While the substitution of H on the 4'-position of stilbene by Br and OMe groups does not alter the photophysical properties of the complexes eminently, the photophysical properties are significantly tuned by the CHO, NO2 and NPh2 substituents. In Chapter 3, platinum(II) complexes (3-1 …

Organic Coatings To Protect Ferrous Structures, Yaping Huang

Coatings and Polymeric Materials

Corrosion induces damages that can result in enormous costs and safety issues. Steels are the most commonly used metallic structural materials but they can corrode rapidly when exposed to corrosive environments and need to be protected. The thesis research focuses on two aspects of steel protection. The first aspect is using barrier protection mechanism to protect steel pipeline structures in the presence of Super-Critical CO2. The second aspect is improving cathodic protection of steels by metal rich coatings in ground vehicles, bridges, water tanks, and other structures. In part one, coatings for protection of steel pipeline used for carbon transportation …

Multiscale Modeling Of Electromagnetic Radiation Transport, Erik David Sapper Jan 2013

Multiscale Modeling Of Electromagnetic Radiation Transport, Erik David Sapper

Coatings and Polymeric Materials

The transport of electromagnetic radiation is a critical factor in determining many of the advanced features of novel materials, composites, and coatings systems. The radiation interaction with a material's surface, as well as its transport and interaction within the material, both combine to produce the overall electromagnetic signature of that object, which is the root cause of the color and appearance of these materials. Historically, approaches to light scattering behavior prediction focus on either the surface interactions or the bulk interactions, and the models most used today are valid only for certain compatible size and length scales of radiation. As …

Novel Conducting Polymer Containing Composite Coatings For The Corrosion Protection Of Metal Alloys, Niteen Jadhav Jan 2013

Novel Conducting Polymer Containing Composite Coatings For The Corrosion Protection Of Metal Alloys, Niteen Jadhav

Coatings and Polymeric Materials

Corrosion is a persistent problem faced by manmade structures made up of metal alloys. Aluminum 2024-T3 is high strength, light weight alloy used in aerospace applications. It suffers from the problem of corrosion due to its composition. Cold rolled steel is employed in structural applications but undergoes severe corrosion when exposed to corrosive conditions. Coatings are one of the best avenues to protect metal alloys from the corrosion. Traditional coating systems such as barrier type coatings, metal rich coatings, and inhibitor containing coatings have their own drawbacks. Conducting polymers (CPs), such as polypyrrole (PPy) can be used for the corrosion …

Towards Providing Test Case Meta-Data To Assist Dynamic Regression Test Scheduling, Arti Katiyar Jan 2013

Towards Providing Test Case Meta-Data To Assist Dynamic Regression Test Scheduling, Arti Katiyar

Computer Science

Autonomic software is typically characterized by dynamic adaptation, a self-management process in which the system adds, removes, and replaces its own components at runtime. At the end of maintenance, the modified software would be retested to: (1) validate added or updated software features, and (2) ensure that new errors were not introduced into previously tested components, i.e., regression testing. King et al [14] introduced an implicit self-test characteristic into autonomic software. His approach modifies the success of a runtime testing approach for autonomic software depends on the way tests are selected and scheduled for execution, which still remains an open …

Non-Destructive Analysis Of Single Plant Canola (Brassica Napus) Seed Using Near Infrared Spectroscopy, Harjot Sidhu

Agribusiness and Biosystems Engineering

Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) is widely used for quantitative analysis of oilseeds in a non-destructive manner. Canola (Brassica napus) is a popular oilseed crop that is used for food and biofuel markets. Due to limited seed availability in plant breeding programs, single plant analysis is often preferred. An NIRS commercial calibration model was evaluated to predict single plant canola seed, but the results showed the need for new NIRS calibration models to predict moisture content, oil content, and fatty acid content for single plant canola seed (3 g) with minimal sample preparation. A separate NIRS calibration model was developed for …
