The Effect Of Contextual Cues On The Encoding Of Motor Memories., Ian S. Howard, Daniel M. Wolpert, David W. Franklin Jan 2013

The Effect Of Contextual Cues On The Encoding Of Motor Memories., Ian S. Howard, Daniel M. Wolpert, David W. Franklin

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Several studies have shown that sensory contextual cues can reduce the interference observed during learning of opposing force fields. However, because each study examined a small set of cues, often in a unique paradigm, the relative efficacy of different sensory contextual cues is unclear. In the present study we quantify how seven contextual cues, some investigated previously and some novel, affect the formation and recall of motor memories. Subjects made movements in a velocity-dependent curl field, with direction varying randomly from trial to trial but always associated with a unique contextual cue. Linking field direction to the cursor or background …

Nucleon Generalized Form Factors With Twisted Mass Fermions, C Alexandrou, M Constantinou, V Drach, K Jansen, C Kallidonis, G Koutsou

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

We present results on the nucleon form factors, momentum fraction and helicity moment for Nf = 2 and Nf = 2+1+1 twisted mass fermions for a number of lattice volumes and lattice spacings. First results for a new Nf = 2 ensemble at the physical pion mass are also included. The implications of these results on the spin content of the nucleon are discussed taking into account the disconnected contributions at one pion mass.

Revolutionary Risks: Cyber Technology And Threats In The 2011 Libyan Revolution, John Scott-Railton Jan 2013

Revolutionary Risks: Cyber Technology And Threats In The 2011 Libyan Revolution, John Scott-Railton

CIWAG Case Studies

(IWS/03 - Irregular Warfare Studies, book 3)

The 2011 Libyan revolution was marked by the intensive use of cyber technology. Using decentralized ways of connecting, such as two-way satellite Internet, the Libyan opposition almost completely bypassed the government's sophisticated Internet monitoring equipment and effectively ended the ability of the Gaddafi regime to control Internet access. Still, electronic actors working on behalf of the regime attacked opposition computers by exploiting key human vulnerabilities.

Wendell Berry's Philosophy Of Education: Lessons From Port William, Jane Margaret Schreck Jan 2013

Wendell Berry's Philosophy Of Education: Lessons From Port William, Jane Margaret Schreck

Theses and Dissertations

In the midst of a proclaimed crisis in higher education, in the clamor and clamber to leverage technology for such innovations as mass open online courses and differentiated learning modules, in the speculative frenzy of preparing students for the careers of a fantasy future, and in the swirl of angst about funding accountability and economic relevance, Wendell Berry's philosophy of education declares that the essential element missing from most current discussions and considerations of education is love. As explained in his essays and revealed in his fiction and poetry, Berry's philosophy centers on love as the best animator of learning: …

Foreign Body Of Endodontic Origin In The Maxillary Sinus, Marta Tanasiewicz, Anna Bubilek-Bogacz, Henryk Twardawa, Małgorzata Skucha-Nowak, Tomasz Szklarski Jan 2013

Foreign Body Of Endodontic Origin In The Maxillary Sinus, Marta Tanasiewicz, Anna Bubilek-Bogacz, Henryk Twardawa, Małgorzata Skucha-Nowak, Tomasz Szklarski

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Foreign bodies found in the maxillary sinus include tooth roots, burs, dental impression material, root-filling materials, dental implants, and needles. The purpose of this paper was to present an unusual case of a large foreign body of endodontic origin (root-filling material) removed from the maxillary sinus. A 45-year-old generally healthy male patient reported to the Department of Conservative Dentistry with Endodontics of the Medical University of Silesia, because of orbital and buccal pain on the right side of his face and headaches in the preceding 6 months. Those symptoms were associated with the end of endodontic treatment of teeth …

Towards A Formulation Of Quantum Theory As A Causally Neutral Theory Of Bayesian Inference, Matthew S. Leifer, Robert W. Spekkens Jan 2013

Towards A Formulation Of Quantum Theory As A Causally Neutral Theory Of Bayesian Inference, Matthew S. Leifer, Robert W. Spekkens

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Quantum theory can be viewed as a generalization of classical probability theory, but the analogy as it has been developed so far is not complete. Whereas themanner in which inferences aremade in classical probability theory is independent of the causal relation that holds between the conditioned variable and the conditioning variable, in the conventional quantum formalism, there is a significant difference between how one treats experiments involving two systems at a single time and those involving a single system at two times. In this article, we develop the formalism of quantum conditional states, which provides a unified description of …

An Interactive Channel Model Of The Basal Ganglia: Bifurcation Analysis Under Healthy And Parkinsonian Conditions, R Merrison-Hort, N Yousif, F Njap, Et Al Jan 2013

An Interactive Channel Model Of The Basal Ganglia: Bifurcation Analysis Under Healthy And Parkinsonian Conditions, R Merrison-Hort, N Yousif, F Njap, Et Al

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Oscillations in the basal ganglia are an active area of research and have been shown to relate to the hypokinetic motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease. We study oscillations in a multi-channel mean field model, where each channel consists of an interconnected pair of subthalamic nucleus and globus pallidus sub-populations.To study how the channels interact, we perform two-dimensional bifurcation analysis of a model of an individual channel, which reveals the critical boundaries in parameter space that separate different dynamical modes; these modes include steady-state, oscillatory, and bi-stable behaviour. Without self-excitation in the subthalamic nucleus a single channel cannot generate oscillations, yet …

Evaluation Of Biomechanical Risk Factors In Division Ii Collegiate Female Athletes Using The Landing Error Scoring System (Less) After An 8-Week Neuromuscular Training Program, Hillaree Leif Jan 2013

Evaluation Of Biomechanical Risk Factors In Division Ii Collegiate Female Athletes Using The Landing Error Scoring System (Less) After An 8-Week Neuromuscular Training Program, Hillaree Leif

Health Nutrition and Exercise Science

Neuromuscular training programs are a relatively new injury prevention strategy to reduce the risk of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries, primarily in female athletes. This study evaluated the effects of a neuromuscular training program on Landing Error Scoring System (LESS) scores, maximum knee flexion, and maximum knee valgus before, during (2 wks, 4 wks, 6 wks), and after an 8-week neuromuscular training program. An 8-week neuromuscular training program significantly decreased the maximum knee valgus in female athletes but did not decrease LESS scores or increase maximum knee flexion. The findings may enhance athletic trainers' understanding of the benefits that neuromuscular …

Use Of Biopolymer Entrapped Sulfate Reducing Bacteria And Metal Nanoparticles For Effective Aqueous Sulfate Removal, Seydou Cisse Jan 2013

Use Of Biopolymer Entrapped Sulfate Reducing Bacteria And Metal Nanoparticles For Effective Aqueous Sulfate Removal, Seydou Cisse

Environmental and Conservation Sciences

Sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) isolated from activated sludge were used to investigate sulfate removal from aqueous solution using calcium alginate entrapped SRB in batch studies with ethanol and lactose as the carbon sources. The interferences of pH, temperature, Al3+, Cu2+, and Zn2+ on sulfate removal were also investigated. Further, sulfate removal experiments were conducted with co-entrapped SRB and nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI) and separately entrapped SRB and NZVI. Results indicate that EntSRB can effectively remove sulfate from aqueous solution. 88-95% sulfate removal was achieved. Both ethanol and lactose worked well as carbon sources for entrapped bacteria. Interference studies indicated low …

A Robust Sound Perception Model Suitable For Neuromorphic Implementation., Martin Coath, Sadique Sheik, Elisabetta Chicca, Giacomo Indiveri, Susan L. Denham, Thomas Wennekers

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

We have recently demonstrated the emergence of dynamic feature sensitivity through exposure to formative stimuli in a real-time neuromorphic system implementing a hybrid analog/digital network of spiking neurons. This network, inspired by models of auditory processing in mammals, includes several mutually connected layers with distance-dependent transmission delays and learning in the form of spike timing dependent plasticity, which effects stimulus-driven changes in the network connectivity. Here we present results that demonstrate that the network is robust to a range of variations in the stimulus pattern, such as are found in naturalistic stimuli and neural responses. This robustness is a property …
