Designing Optimal Innovation Portfolio, Arcot Desai Narasimhalu Dec 2013

Designing Optimal Innovation Portfolio, Arcot Desai Narasimhalu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

There have been many approaches towards investing in innovation projects. There has been very little discussion about the need to align such investments with the mission, vision, goals, leadership style, value discipline and risk appetite of an organization. This paper reviews existing approaches to innovation related investments and suggests the setting up of a proper innovation portfolio management process along with three dashboards that will help make innovation related investment decisions in an informed manner. The resulting innovation portfolio will be optimal in its alignment with an organizations mission and vision. We expect this method to be used by all …

Kapitalisme Dalam Kerlingan Negara-Berdaulat: Ulasan Historis Singkat Dari Era Imperium Romawi Agung Sampai Era Neoliberal, Hizkia Yosie Polimpung

Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional

Is State in capitalism, as endlessly muttered by Marxists of all stripes, nothing more than just a committee for managing the common affairs of the whole bourgeoisie? The article rebuts this by presenting a brief evolution of the constitution of Westphalian sovereign state, one that is still reigning up to present day. It tries to distill the logic of sovereignty and shows how the State is actually operate outside the logic of the capitalism. In so doing, the article also discusses the encounter of these two logics in the liberal conceptions of state (esp. Social Democratic & Neoliberalism) along with …

Keberhasilan Semu Deradikalisasi Di Indonesia, Sarie Febriane, Mariamah M

Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional

This paper researches the claim made by the Indonesian government regarding the deradicalization program that it ran to deradicalize militants. The Indonesian government claimed that the deradicalization program had been very successful and effective in countering religious extremism. This paper will examine the effects of the de-radicalisation program and will argue that the program has not been as effective as has been claimed. This paper highlights researches which indicate that the program doesn't have a clear structure and the facts that it has been used by terrorist suspects to leave prison through using rewards received after joining the program and …

Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional

The focus of this study is on Indonesia's option to conduct military intervention as its foreign policy in Timor Portugis on 7 December 1975. The purpose of this study is to identify factors that influence the government of Indonesia to choose military intervention as in the case of Portuguese Timor. This study uses qualitative approach with data gathered from primary as well as secondary sources and, then, analyzed using descriptive-analytical method. This study concludes that the option to conduct military intervention to Timor Portugis on 7 December 1975 is due to three reasons, i.e.: (1) suportive policies of interested countries, …

A Nonparametric Method For Pricing And Hedging American Options, Guiyun Feng, Guangwu Liu, Lihua Sun Dec 2013

A Nonparametric Method For Pricing And Hedging American Options, Guiyun Feng, Guangwu Liu, Lihua Sun

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In this paper, we study the problem of estimating the price of an American option and its price sensitivities via Monte Carlo simulation. Compared to estimating the option price which satisfies a backward recursion, estimating the price sensitivities is more challenging. With the readily-computable pathwise derivatives in a simulation run, we derive a backward recursion for the price sensitivities. We then propose nonparametric estimators, the k-nearest neighbor estimators, to estimate conditional expectations involved in the backward recursion, leading to estimates of the option price and its sensitivities in the same simulation run. Numerical experiments indicate that the proposed method works …

Competitive Intelligence And Forecasting Systems: Strategic Marketing Planning Tool For Sme's, Conway Lackman, John M. Lanasa Dec 2013

Competitive Intelligence And Forecasting Systems: Strategic Marketing Planning Tool For Sme's, Conway Lackman, John M. Lanasa

Atlantic Marketing Journal

One of the drivers of both strategic planning and success in the marketplace is the role of competitive intelligence systems (CIS). CIS activity and its value to consumer/competitive intelligence are well established. In a survey of a broad cross section of firms, it was found that two thirds of the companies indicated a dramatic increase in level of activity and nearly three fifths (54%) said the impact of marketing intelligence systems (MI) contribute heavily to tactical and strategic decision making (Lackman, Lanasa, and Saban, 2000). Small and medium enterprises (SME’s) traditionally have neglected CIS partly because of the cost and …

An Experiment In Testing Advertising Levels By Measuring Natural Test Market Variation, Michael Latta Dec 2013

An Experiment In Testing Advertising Levels By Measuring Natural Test Market Variation, Michael Latta

Atlantic Marketing Journal

A field experiment utilizing a new experimental approach to measuring advertising exposure which provides a range of levels of exposure was conducted in eight main test market and eight fringe cities for a global Fortune 500 company consumer durable product. The results showed: a) targeted rating points of advertising delivered are strongly related to advertising effectiveness, and b) this effect is attributable to advertising level and to whether the members of the target audience live close to or far from the broadcast source.

Revisiting Stereotype Research And Its Marketing Implications, Amy H. Handlin Dec 2013

Revisiting Stereotype Research And Its Marketing Implications, Amy H. Handlin

Atlantic Marketing Journal

This paper revisits a vintage body of literature that holds clues to understanding the contemporary problem of change-resistant, stereotype-driven brand or product images. In particular, this stream of research helps illuminate (1) how information is used to create, reinforce, or weaken the perceptual device known as a stereotype, and (2) what situation-specific circumstances (e.g. the nature of the processing task) may influence the impact of this information. The author reviews major findings from the past thirty years, identifying key implications and offering hypotheses for testing dimensions of stereotype activation and alteration.

Shopping Context And The Impulsive And Compulsive Buyer, Richard L. Flight, Jarrod Scherle Dec 2013

Shopping Context And The Impulsive And Compulsive Buyer, Richard L. Flight, Jarrod Scherle

Atlantic Marketing Journal

Impulsive and compulsive buying are behaviors with unique antecedents and consequences. Each has been studied at length but not in the duel context of offline and online retail environments. This current research examines the interaction of shopping context (online or offline) in relation to impulsive and compulsive buying behaviors. We find evidence that compulsive buying tendency is positively associated with online shopping, while impulse buying tendency is positively associated with offline shopping. The implications of this research suggest that purchasing as a result of compulsive and impulsive buying tendencies vary as a result of the shopping context which includes physical …

Kasky V. Nike: Lurking First Amendment Time Bomb For Marketers?, Michael J. Landry Dec 2013

Kasky V. Nike: Lurking First Amendment Time Bomb For Marketers?, Michael J. Landry

Atlantic Marketing Journal

While attention has focused on the U. S. Supreme Court protecting corporate political speech, the Court has left untouched a California Supreme Court ruling of significance to marketers in their efforts to use advertising and public relations to offset what they view as unfair criticism. The case, Kasky v. Nike, stems from 1995 accusations that athletic footwear and apparel manufacturer Nike exploited and abused employees in Asian sweatshops. Through advertising and public relations efforts, Nike denied the claims. In 1998, Californian Mark Kasky sued, claiming Nike’s denials violated laws regarding unfair competition and false advertising and, because the denials were …

The Impact Of Message Sequencing In The New Product Introduction Process: Boosting Message Retention And Its Impact On Product Attitude, Bobi Ivanov, Kimberly A. Parker, Jeanetta D. Sims, Chan Yun Yoo

Atlantic Marketing Journal

This study focused on providing a more nuanced understanding of the message retention-attitude (cognition-affect) relationship in new product introductions. Using advertising and publicity as independent and combined promotional tools, this study aims to determine an effective approach to strengthen the retention-attitude relationship as well as the level of new product information retention and, through it, the attitude toward the product. To that end, a two-phase experiment was conducted involving 423 participants. The results revealed that publicity, compared to advertising, in general, was a more effective strategy in boosting retention and that the publicity-publicity sequence strategy was the most effective in …

It examines how health care consumers respond to various online PHC delivery systems, with a special emphasis on social media (SM). Specifically different demographic groups are compared to determine the importance each group places on various online delivery systems. The results of a survey showed the 35-44 year old group placing the greatest importance of retrieving PHC information online. Older …

Halogenation Effects In Intramolecular Furan Diels-Alder Reactions: Broad Scope Synthetic And Computational Studies, Robert L. Rae, Justyna M. Zurek, Martin J. Paterson, Magnus Bebbington Dec 2013

Halogenation Effects In Intramolecular Furan Diels-Alder Reactions: Broad Scope Synthetic And Computational Studies, Robert L. Rae, Justyna M. Zurek, Martin J. Paterson, Magnus Bebbington

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

For the first time a comprehensive synthetic and computational study of the effect of halogen substitution on both furan and dienophile for the intramolecular Furan Diels-Alder (IMDAF) reaction has been undertaken. Contrary to our initial expectations, halogen substitution on the dienophile was found to have a significant effect, making the reactions slower and less thermodynamically favourable. However, careful choice of the site of furan halogenation could be used to overcome dienophile halogen substitution, leading to highly functionalised cycloadducts. These reactions are thought to be controlled by the interplay of three factors: positive charge stabilisation in the transition state and product, …

Recognizing And Resolving Social Dilemmas In Supply Chain Public–Private Partnerships, Matthew Mccarter, Darcy Fudge Kamal Dec 2013

Recognizing And Resolving Social Dilemmas In Supply Chain Public–Private Partnerships, Matthew Mccarter, Darcy Fudge Kamal

Business Faculty Articles and Research

The public-private partnership is a popular strategy for creating global sustainable value. However, many public-private partnerships struggle to realize their value-added potential. Why do some public-private partnerships succeed while others fail, and how may those struggling succeed? Combining supply-chain integration and social dilemma perspectives into the conversation of public-private partnerships, we examine the dynamics and psychology of
cooperation necessary for public-private partnership success. Addressing the first part of our research question, we recognize three social dilemmas that can manifest while managing public-private partnership supply chains: a give-some dilemma, a take-some dilemma, and a give-or-take-some dilemma. To address the second part …

Material Geography, Mountains, And A-Nationalism In Thurman's The Blacker The Berry, Stephanie Jean Burns Dec 2013

Material Geography, Mountains, And A-Nationalism In Thurman's The Blacker The Berry, Stephanie Jean Burns

Theses and Dissertations

Scholars over the last two decades or so have become increasingly interested in methods of interpreting history, society, and literature that do not rely on nationalistic paradigms. One vein of the transnational analytic trend is interested not only in the multiplicity of cultural geographies but also in the materiality of geography. Such critical work is extremely helpful in challenging myopic nationalist readings; yet the materiality of geography used as a theoretical lens has even greater potential. Using geographical formations as a basis for literary analysis can yield a theoretical base that has nothing to do with the borders of nations …

Comparing Two Different Student Teaching Structures By Analyzing Conversations Between Student Teachers And Their Cooperating Teachers, Niccole Suzette Franc Dec 2013

Comparing Two Different Student Teaching Structures By Analyzing Conversations Between Student Teachers And Their Cooperating Teachers, Niccole Suzette Franc

Theses and Dissertations

Research has shown that preservice teachers participating in traditional student teaching programs tend to focus on classroom management, with very little focus on student mathematical thinking. The student teaching program at BYU has been redesigned in the hopes of shifting the focus of student teachers away from classroom management toward student mathematical thinking. This study compared conversations between student teachers and cooperating teachers before and after the redesign of the program to work towards determining the effectiveness of the refocusing of the new student teaching program. The study found that STs and CTs in the different student teaching structures were …

Language is the most systemized and direct method of human expression; it is the medium by which groups and individuals convey, communicate and understand. We most directly and effectively reveal our identity through sharing language with others.

A similar situation exists in the expressive function of visual imagery. Much of my work abstracts and interprets the nature of objective reality, notably in visual relationships between space, lines and edges. I think of my artworks as extensions of a distinct visual language, and the vocabulary by which I abstract and compose is communicated in a systemized manner similar to language forms. …

Artifacts Of Schooling, Frank S. Kelly Dec 2013

Artifacts Of Schooling, Frank S. Kelly

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

The paper explores important issues in today’s education, not by analyses and statistics, but by projecting readers into the future and then asking them to look back on today’s schools and to act like archaeologists—to surmise from all sorts of things they can observe, what was really important to us, what we really valued, how we treated kids, how our schools related to the communities they serve, how we used funds and time, how we used the ideas and technology available to us. Readers may find themselves amazed, amused or angered by their own answers.

Solvitur Ambulando: It Is Solved By Walking, Megan Dickerson

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

Though a significant portion of the conversation around “play provision” focuses on the quality and availability of community playgrounds, the majority of children’s play occurs in transitional spaces: sidewalks and other spaces not designed for children but used by children daily. This Perspective from the Field briefly reviews the late 19th century roots of the American playground and argues that though a focus on playground provision may draw attention to the importance of safe play spaces, a focus on playgrounds alone is limiting. Given playgrounds’ historical rootings, the omnipresent KFC (Kit, Fence and Carpet) playground begins to seem a …
