Samoa Stories Of Faith, Thomas Powell, Dr. Jeremy Grimshaw

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Samoan Islands are home to a rich and fascinating history and culture which is slowly disappearing as other world influences continue to have an impact on them. As members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, it is our responsibility to seek to preserve our heritage, both for our own enlightenment and for the benefit of future generations. Having served my mission in Samoa I have been able to experience firsthand the wonder and beauty of their culture and also to see the many changes it is undergoing.

Alexander Volkov And The Dancing Bacha: Uzbek Motifs In Motion, Rachel S. Golden Aug 2013

Alexander Volkov And The Dancing Bacha: Uzbek Motifs In Motion, Rachel S. Golden

Theses and Dissertations

Alexander Volkov (1886-1957), an Uzbek artist identified by his expressive style, vibrant palette, and devotion to folk subjects, was a leading figure in the movement known as the Uzbek avant-garde. Volkov's influence is still at work among artists in Uzbekistan, though his legacy remains largely unexplored by Western scholars. The Arkansas Arts Center owns one drawing by Volkov depicting the tradition of dancing boys or bachas, a subject the artist also painted among his reflections on Uzbek culture. Work from the same period by fellow artist Alexander Nikolaev (Usto Mumin, 1897-1957), who was better known for his attachment to bachas, …

Perceived Creative Partnership: A Consequence Of Music's Social Use, Paul Gennaro Barretta Aug 2013

Perceived Creative Partnership: A Consequence Of Music's Social Use, Paul Gennaro Barretta

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

As contemporary consumers interact with one another and the market in a more symbolic manner, the ways music and other products are used are changing. Scholarly research has investigated the use of music in a social manner, mostly in terms of self-identity, and practitioners have explored the sharing of music, particularly with regard to the use of technology. The present research takes a closer look at the social use of music and proposes a consequence that is termed Perceived Creative Partnership; people use music in a social manner in order to achieve a state of being where they feel as …

Teaching World Music In An Elementary Setting: Effective Teaching Strategies And Classroom Materials, Calyna Mc Allister

Masters Theses

The world we live in today is increasingly a global society. As such, the various cultures of the world come into contact with one another more often. Students today need to have experiences with different cultures in order to participate effectively in this globally minded world. An excellent way to expose children to these cultures is through the use of world music in the general music classroom. The need for world music from a music education standpoint has been addressed over the past few decades. However, little has been done to address the teaching methods associated with world music or …

Masters Theses

The objective of this study is to further the understanding of how junior-high students in the public schools perceive the effects of popular music on their behavior in the classroom. Two primary research questions serve as the foundation for this study. In Search Of The Original "Skewball", Seán Ó Cadhla

Articles

The well-known horseracing ballad ‘Skewball’ has been widely documented in oral tradition on both sides of the Atlantic, as well as on numerous English broadside printings. It recounts the tale of a mid-eighteenth-century horserace held at The Curragh of Kildare, in which a heavily-backed mare is comprehensively beaten by a relatively unknown skewbald gelding leaving the mare’s owner — along with much of the assembled onlookers — significantly out of pocket. The ballad became widely popularised in North America where it was first published in a song book in 1826 (Benton 1826:3-4). It was later subsumed into African-American song tradition, …

Indita Que Si Indita Que No, Juan A. Romero Jr. Jul 2013

Indita Que Si Indita Que No, Juan A. Romero Jr.

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

Much has been written on the balladry of the US. and Mexico. Much has been written on the musical tradition in New Mexico. Much has been written on the tradition of Inditas in New Mexico and Southern Colorado. So one must ask the question, why another study on a subject which many have exhausted? This thesis is written in hopes of adding to the dialogue these scholars have left us. It is also written in hopes of providing an anthology or canon that in times past did not exist or was inaccessible for scholarly analysis. Since most Inditas are dispersed …

The Applicability Of Institutional Dynamics Framework For A Model For Enterprise Growth In Grenada And The Dominican Republic: A Preliminary Exploration, Reccia N. Charles, Nazly N. Nardi, Ruth Clarke

HCBE Faculty Presentations

Generally governments in developing economies work towards encouraging enterprise growth as the engine to increase national wealth and higher standards of living. In terms of the form of enterprise, some countries favor public or public-private partnerships, while others favor private enterprise primarily. The smaller the economy the more likely it is that the government will be involved in promoting the growth of enterprises. This paper examines the role of institutional dynamics in supporting or limiting enterprise growth in Grenada and the Dominican Republic. The interplay of the three parts of the institutional profile, regulatory, cognitive and normative, will be influenced in …

“You Got To Know Us”: A Hopeful Model For Music Education In Urban Schools, Frank Martignetti, Brent C. Talbot, Matthew Clauhs, Timothy Hawkins, Nasim Niknafs

Sunderman Conservatory of Music Faculty Publications

Urban schools, and the students and teachers within, are often characterized by a metanarrative of deficit and crisis, causing the complex realities of urban education to remain unclear behind a wall of assumptions and stereotypes. Within music education, urban schools have received limited but increasing attention from researchers. However, voices from practitioners are often missing from this dialogue, and the extant scholarly dialogue has had a very limited effect on music teacher education. In this article, five music educators with a combined thirty years of experience in urban schools examine aspects of their experiences in the light of critical pedagogy …

A New Kind Of National: Modified String Quartet Practices In Post-Soviet Eurasia, Adam Taylor Lenz

Masters Theses

This thesis examines the practices of string quartet modification implemented by three post-Soviet Eurasian composers: Franghiz Ali-Zadeh (Azerbaijan), Vache Sharafyan (Armenia), and Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky (Uzbekistan). After an introduction to the geography of the region and the biographies of the composers, their works containing modified string quartet configurations are examined within three distinct modification practices. These practices consist of the addition of outside instruments, the addition of electronic components, and the alteration of performance practice. The evaluation of these techniques is carried out through musical analysis and examination of cultural context. After each work has been examined, the body of works …

The Candombe Drumming Of Uruguay: Contextualizing Uruguayan Identity Through Afro-Uruguayan Rhythm, Clifford Todd Sutton May 2013

The Candombe Drumming Of Uruguay: Contextualizing Uruguayan Identity Through Afro-Uruguayan Rhythm, Clifford Todd Sutton

Open Access Dissertations

This essay examines the drum rhythms associated with Uruguayan candombe, and Afro-Uruguayan music and dance promoted nationally and internationally as Uruguayan cultural heritage. At the heart of this cultural form, both musically and symbolically, is the drum (commonly referred to in Uruguay as tambor), along with collective drumming performances known as llamadas. Scholars of Afro-Uruguayan history, culture, and music are quick to acknowledge the significance of the drum to candombe, linking it to Afro-Uruguayan discourses and the politics of national identity. However, many of the resources that would assist musicians who are interested in learning and understanding these rhythms and …

A Methodology For The Application Of Afro-Peruvian Rhythms To The Drumset For Use In A Contemporary Jazz Setting, Daniel Stephen Susnjar

Open Access Dissertations

With a great increase in the global awareness of Afro-Peruvian music in the last ten to fifteen years, jazz musicians have become interested in utilizing the rhythms of Peru to help push their music into new areas of sound and texture. Regarding the art of applying Afro-Peruvian rhythms to the drumset for use in a contemporary jazz setting, inspired heavily by the drumming approach of Hugo Alcázar, there are no published methodologies available which explain how to develop the skills required to make this process a reality. This document details historical background information about Afro-Peruvian music, the application of Afro-Peruvian …

Robert Nathaniel Dett And The Music Of The Harlem Renaissance, Daniel Weaver May 2013

Robert Nathaniel Dett And The Music Of The Harlem Renaissance, Daniel Weaver

History Theses

While the contributions of writers and poets to the period of American cultural history known as the Harlem Renaissance are relatively well defined and understood, assessing the contributions of musicians has been more problematic. The topic has been covered indirectly through works of American music history and African American history, but there have been comparatively few works linking music directly to the goals of the movement. Much of the insight into music’s place during this period derives from contemporary writers such as Alain Locke and James Weldon Johnson, both of whom featured discussions of music in their writings. Relatively unknown …

A Pedagogical Guide To Roberto Carpio's Music For Solo Piano, Pablo Ernesto Sotomayor Kamiyama May 2013

A Pedagogical Guide To Roberto Carpio's Music For Solo Piano, Pablo Ernesto Sotomayor Kamiyama

Dissertations

The purpose of this document, targeted to an international audience of pianists, is to present the solo piano music of the Peruvian composer Roberto Carpio (1900-1986). While most of Carpio’s compositions are scored for solo piano, he also composed lieder, choral pieces, and a few string chamber music works. A pianistic analysis of his keyboard output reveals a relative modesty of technical requirements, which makes his pieces suitable for pianists in their formative years. Notwithstanding the technical simplicity, Carpio’s piano music shows a remarkable musical creativity and an interest to combine elements derived from traditional Peruvian music with early twentieth-century …
