Final Report: Multipath Modeling And Mitigation Using Multiple Antennas (M4a), Michael Rice

Faculty Publications

This report documents the effort under contract W900KK-09-C-0016. The contract comprised four phases spanning 15 April 2009 to 1 December 2012. The relationship between the effort associated with each phase and the contents of this report are as follows: Phase 1 was devoted exclusively to the channel sounding experiments with the UH-1H helicopter. The experimental setup, procedure, and results for the channel sounding experiments at Cairns Army Airfield and Patuxent River are described in Chapter 2. Good, usable data at upper L-band was captured during the Cairns Army Airfield experiments. Phase 2 was devoted to the channel sounding experiments with …

Many people are unaware of how influential Mormons, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), have been on American popular culture. Mormons and Popular Culture: The Global Influence of an American Phenomenon parts the curtain and looks behind the scenes at the little-known but important influence Mormons have had on popular culture in the United States and beyond. Included here are six sidebars that reveal some of the more fascinating contribution Mormons have made to American popular culture.

Aggregate Shape Characterization Using Digital Image Processing, Norbert H. Maerz, David Newton Richardson Jan 2013

Aggregate Shape Characterization Using Digital Image Processing, Norbert H. Maerz, David Newton Richardson

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Aggregates must meet certain specifications to be acceptable in asphalt and concrete applications. Among these are specifications that deal with the various aspects of aggregate shape, including flatness and elongation and aggregate angularity. The current practice for ensuring those specifications is the use of manual-mechanical tests. These tests are time consuming, labor intensive and subjective. In addition, tests such as the compacted or uncompacted voids tests (Figure 1), are taken to be a shape (angularity) indicator, even thought the measured quantify is the void ratio. This report describes a prototype of an automated digital video image analysis system that measures …

Stakeholders Perspective On Sustainable Technology Selection To Achieve Zero Carbon Retail Buildings, Syeda Zainab, Wei Pan, Steve Goodhew, Alba Fuertes Jan 2013

Stakeholders Perspective On Sustainable Technology Selection To Achieve Zero Carbon Retail Buildings, Syeda Zainab, Wei Pan, Steve Goodhew, Alba Fuertes

School of Art, Design and Architecture

In the design and construction of sustainable retail buildings, there are various stakeholders involved with the overall aim of selecting appropriate sustainable technologies to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions. Previous studies and literature review indicate there is no comprehensive selection process to assist stakeholders. This can be classified as a complex multi-criteria decision problem due to the high number of alternatives, potential solutions and variety of stakeholders (e.g. clients, professional advisors, end-users) with multiple, often conflicting, objectives leading in turn to the slow take-up of sustainable technologies. There is a demand for a systematic and effective evaluation tool for …

Nucleon Generalized Form Factors With Twisted Mass Fermions, C Alexandrou, M Constantinou, V Drach, K Jansen, C Kallidonis, G Koutsou

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

We present results on the nucleon form factors, momentum fraction and helicity moment for Nf = 2 and Nf = 2+1+1 twisted mass fermions for a number of lattice volumes and lattice spacings. First results for a new Nf = 2 ensemble at the physical pion mass are also included. The implications of these results on the spin content of the nucleon are discussed taking into account the disconnected contributions at one pion mass.

Modeling Of The Resilient Modulus For Recycled Asphalt Pavement Applications In Base Course Layers, Ehab Noureldin, Magdy Abdelrahman Jan 2013

Modeling Of The Resilient Modulus For Recycled Asphalt Pavement Applications In Base Course Layers, Ehab Noureldin, Magdy Abdelrahman

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The resilient modulus (MR) is an important parameter for the base course layer in the pavement design process. Use of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) for this layer must take into consideration the effect of various factors that may occur in the field on the MR. Previous numerical models used for the granular base layer could be used for the RAP. The study reported here examined the suitability of RAP procedures under the effect of different factors (e.g., water content, dry density, freeze-thaw cycles). Various percentages of the RAP (50%, 75%, and 100% by weight) were employed …

Performance Enhancement Of Crumb Rubber-Modified Asphalts Through Control Of The Developed Internal Network Structure, Mohyeldin Ragab, Magdy Abdelrahman, Amir Ghavibzaoo Jan 2013

Performance Enhancement Of Crumb Rubber-Modified Asphalts Through Control Of The Developed Internal Network Structure, Mohyeldin Ragab, Magdy Abdelrahman, Amir Ghavibzaoo

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Control of the internal network structure of crumb rubber-modified asphalt (CRMA) was investigated for its effect on property development in the study presented in this paper. The investigation included evaluation by rheological and interrupted shear tests. Rheological testing involved the monitoring of the changes of the produced complex modulus (G*) and phase angle (δ) for CRMA. In the interrupted shear tests, the shear stress profile for the produced CRMA was investigated. It was found that triggering the critical conditions of the combined interaction of speed, temperature, and time was essential to inducing the formation of the three-dimensional network …

Versatile Rb Vapor Cells With Long Lifetimes, John F. Hulbert, Matthieu Giraud-Carrier, Tom Wall, Aaron R. Hawkins, Scott D. Bergeson, Jennifer Black, Holger Schmidt

Faculty Publications

The authors report on an approach to the construction of long-lasting rubidium atomic vapor cells. The method uses pinch-off copper cold-welds, low temperature solders, and electroplated copper to create long-lasting hermetic seals between containment chambers of dissimilar geometries and materials. High temperature epoxy, eutectic lead/tin solder, and indium solder were considered as sealing materials. These seals were analyzed using accelerated lifetime testing techniques. Vapor cells with epoxy and bare metal solder seals had a decrease in the rubidium atomic density within days after being heated to elevated temperatures. They also exhibited broadened spectra as a result of rubidium reacting with …

The Case For A Custer Battalion Survivor: Private Gustave Korn's Story, Albert Winkler Jan 2013

The Case For A Custer Battalion Survivor: Private Gustave Korn's Story, Albert Winkler

Faculty Publications

Almost all of these claims of men having survived Custer’s Massacre at the Battle of the Little Bighorn have proven to be false, Gustave Korn’s case has merit. He was with Company I of Custer’s Battalion when it was attacked and later overwhelmed by the Indians. Korn claimed that his horse was wounded, became unmanageable, and carried him away from the Custer’s Battalion before it was wiped out. The circumstantial evidence supports his claim, and many of the other men in the Seventh Cavalry believed him. Korn was also famous because he cared for Comanche, the horse that was badly …
