Isolation And Partial Characterization Of Bioactive Fucoxanthin From Himanthalia Elongata Brown Seaweed: A Tlc-Based Approach, Gaurav Rajauria, Nissreen Abu-Ghannam

Articles

Seaweeds are important sources of carotenoids, and numerous studies have shown the beneficial effects of these pigments on human health. In the present study, Himanthalia elongata brown seaweed was extracted with a mixture of low polarity solvents, and the crude extract was separated using analytical thin-layer chromatography (TLC).The separated compounds were tested for their potential antioxidant capacity and antimicrobial activity against Listeria monocytogenes bacteria using TLC bioautography approach. For bio-autography, the coloured band on TLC chromatogram was visualized after spraying with DPPH and triphenyltetrazolium chloride reagents which screen antioxidant and antimicrobial compounds, respectively, and only one active compound was screened …

Biomedical Photoacoustic Imaging Using Gas-Coupled Laser Acoustic Detection, Jami Johnson May 2013

Biomedical Photoacoustic Imaging Using Gas-Coupled Laser Acoustic Detection, Jami Johnson

Student Research Initiative

Several detection methods have been explored for photoacoustic and ultrasound imaging of biological tissues. Piezoelectric transducers are commonly used, which require contact with the sample to be imaged and have limiting bandwidth characteristics. Interferometry detection exhibits improved bandwidth characteristics and resolution, yet generally require complicated optics and the incorporation of a contacting reflective medium. In this paper, we report the use of a noncontact photoacoustic imaging system that does not require the use of a reflective layer. A simple, robust technique known as gas-coupled laser acoustic detection is used, which has previously been applied to evaluation of composite materials. This …

Increasing Ca2+ Deposition In The Western Us: The Role Of Mineral Aerosols, Janice Brahney, Ashley P. Ballantyne, C. Sievers, Jason C. Neff

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Considerable research has focused on the role of industrial emissions in controlling the acidity of precipitation; however, much less research has focused on the role of mineral aerosols emitted from soils. According to data published by the National Atmospheric Deposition Network (NADP), over the past 17 years Ca2+ deposition has increased over large regions of the US. A trend analysis to determine regions of significant change in Ca2+ deposition revealed statistically significant increases in three broad regions within the western half of the country: the inter-mountain west, the midwest, and the northwest. We evaluated potential changes in sources of calcium …

Kinematic Analysis Of Hip And Knee Joints Between Barefoot And Shod Treadmill Running, Stephanie E. Lloyd May 2013

Kinematic Analysis Of Hip And Knee Joints Between Barefoot And Shod Treadmill Running, Stephanie E. Lloyd

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Running shoes have recently been designed to mimic barefoot walking or running, and they are marketed with promises that runners will benefit from the effects of barefoot running. Studying gait analysis with particular running shoes is extremely important because the ankle and foot serve as the foundation of structural balance, support, and propulsion. In this study, the knee and hip joint motions will be addressed while wearing Vibram FiveFinger and Nike Free Run shoes, which are designed to imitate barefoot running while providing protection from the elements. The purpose of this current study was to investigate the movement kinematics in …

Pam Heterozygosity Disrupts Amygdalar Neurophysiology And Copper Homeostasis With Behavioral Consequences, Eric D. Gaier May 2013

Pam Heterozygosity Disrupts Amygdalar Neurophysiology And Copper Homeostasis With Behavioral Consequences, Eric D. Gaier

Doctoral Dissertations

Peptidylglycine α-amidating monooxygenase (PAM) is a secretory granule membrane protein whose luminal enzymatic domains catalyze the Cu-dependent amidation biosynthetic step common to many neuroactive peptides. Aside from its essential role as the sole mammalian amidating enzyme, PAM alters Cu homeostasis, modulates transcription and regulates secretory granule trafficking. The model of PAM haploinsufficiency employs mice heterozygous for the Pam gene (PAM+/-); the mice show anxiety-like disorders and deficiencies in fear learning and memory. We performed whole-cell recordings of pyramidal neurons in the PAM+/- amygdala to elucidate neurophysiological correlates of the fear behavioral phenotypes. Consistent with these observations, thalamic …

Transcriptome Dynamics: A Global Approach To Characterizing The Mrna Populations Of Human Embryonic Stem And Neural Lineage Cells, Michael J. Horowitz May 2013

Transcriptome Dynamics: A Global Approach To Characterizing The Mrna Populations Of Human Embryonic Stem And Neural Lineage Cells, Michael J. Horowitz

Doctoral Dissertations

Almost every cell in any organism contains the same genomic content. Different cell types, however, display strikingly different morphologies, behaviors and functions. The central nervous system (CNS) provides an excellent example of cellular diversity. The CNS develops as progenitor cells migrate and mature into thousands of distinct subtypes of neurons and supportive cells.

The cellular transformation from undifferentiated, pluripotent, embryonic stem cell to mature neuron is dictated by changing patterns of gene expression. This process must be tightly regulated to ensure proper development. Much of our understanding of the development of the human CNS has been gleaned from cell culture, …

Finding Solutions To Institutional Corruption: Lessons From Cognitive Dissonance Theory, Lisa Cosgrove, Robert Whitaker May 2013

Finding Solutions To Institutional Corruption: Lessons From Cognitive Dissonance Theory, Lisa Cosgrove, Robert Whitaker

Counseling, School Psychology & Sport Faculty Publication Series

The American Psychiatric Association and academic psychiatry in the United States have two conflicts of interest that may affect their assessment of psychiatric drugs and their development of diagnostic and clinical care guidelines: payments from pharmaceutical companies and guild interests. Until recently, the proposed solution to industry-academic relationships has been transparency. However, cognitive dissonance research reveals that disclosure is not a solution because cognitive biases are commonplace and difficult to eradicate. Indeed, bias is most often manifest in subtle ways unbeknownst to the researcher or clinician, and thus is usually implicit and unintentional. Also, recent studies suggest that disclosure of …

Chinese Whiteness: The Discourse Of Race In Modern And Contemporary Chinese Culture, Kirstin Clouser

Honors Theses

This thesis chronicles the development of western forms of race and racism in China. It then studies contemporary China using theories derived from whiteness studies in order to explain the unique position that whites (Caucasians) have in China today. In Chapter I, I break down the definition of race and introduce a foundation for a whiteness studies approach to research. In Chapter II, I analyze how Chinese classified themselves and other humans prior to the western system of race. In Chapter III, I chronicle the introduction of western forms of race and racism to China, and the appropriation of these …

Investigation Of Leucine And Glutamic Acid Properties From The Nanoscale To The Macroscale, Thuong Ngoc Phan May 2013

Investigation Of Leucine And Glutamic Acid Properties From The Nanoscale To The Macroscale, Thuong Ngoc Phan

Honors Theses

Aerosols are known to have important effects on climate, the atmosphere, and human health. The extent of those effects is unknown and largely depend on the interaction of aerosols with water in the atmosphere. Ambient aerosols are complex mixtures of both inorganic and organic compounds. The cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) activities, hygroscopic behavior and particle morphology of a monocarboxylic amino acid (leucine) and a dicarboxylic amino acid (glutamic acid) were investigated. Activation diameters at various supersaturation conditions were experimentally determined and compared with Köhler theoretical values. The theory accounts for both surface tension and the limited solubility of organic compounds. …

Dads, Daughters, And Disney: The Historical Trajectory Of Fairy Tale Fathers And Daughters, Katie Mancino May 2013

Dads, Daughters, And Disney: The Historical Trajectory Of Fairy Tale Fathers And Daughters, Katie Mancino

Honors Theses

In my thesis I use a historical approach to close readings of fairy tale texts and movies to study the evolution of fathers, daughters, and marriage within three landmark tales: ¿Cinderella,¿ ¿Sleeping Beauty,¿ and ¿Snow White.¿ Using the works of Giambattista Basile, Charles Perrault, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, and Walt Disney and his cohort of animators, I trace the historical trajectory of these three elements, analyzing both the ways they change and develop as history progresses as well as the ways they remain consistent. Through close and comparative readings of primary sources and films, I demonstrate the power structures and …

Entomology Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: The sweetpotato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), is one of the most widely distributed agricultural pests. Although it has developed resistance to many registered insecticides including the neonicotinoid insecticide thiamethoxam, the mechanisms that regulate the resistance are poorly understood. To understand the molecular basis of thiamethoxam resistance, "omics" analyses were carried out to examine differences between resistant and susceptible B. tabaci at both transcriptional and translational levels.

RESULTS: A total of 1,338 mRNAs and 52 proteins were differentially expressed between resistant and susceptible B. tabaci. Among them, 11 transcripts had concurrent transcription and translation profiles. KEGG analysis mapped 318 …

Fungal pathogens elicit cytokine responses downstream of immunoreceptor tyrosine-based activation motif (ITAM)-coupled or hemiITAM-containing receptors and TLRs. The Linker for Activation of B cells/Non-T cell Activating Linker (LAB/NTAL) encoded by Lat2, is a known regulator of ITAM-coupled receptors and TLR-associated cytokine responses. Here we demonstrate that LAB is involved in anti-fungal immunity. We show that Lat2−/− mice are more susceptible to C. albicans infection than wild type (WT) mice. Dendritic cells (DCs) express LAB and we show that it is basally phosphorylated by the growth factor M-CSF or following engagement of Dectin-2, but not Dectin-1. Our data revealed …

Cytotoxic Properties Of Novel Platinum Compounds, Bbr3610-Dach And Trans-4-Nbd In Tumor Cells: Cellular Effects Of 1, 2-Dach And Nbd Ligands, Vijay Menon

Theses and Dissertations

Platinum-based chemotherapeutics are used for the treatment of a wide range of cancers and a number of attempts have been made toward developing compounds with better cellular stability and similar or enhanced cytotoxicity as compared to their predecessors. The first part of the work reported here focuses on the cellular effects of the metabolically stable dinuclear platinum compound, BBR3610-DACH. Comet assay showed this compound to form interstrand crosslinks, a highly toxic DNA lesion in HCT116 cells, at equimolar concentrations to its parental compound, BBR3610. Cell cycle studies showed that BBR3610-DACH causes G1/S and G2/M cell cycle arrest with S phase …
