Unfinished Business: Ongoing Ethical Exceptionalism In The Oversight Of Human Pluripotent Stem Cell Research In Canada, Jocelyn Downie, Francoise Baylis
Research Papers, Working Papers, Conference Papers
In this article we critically examine the arguments for and against the exceptional status given human pluripotent stem cell research in Canada through the latest December 2010 revision of the TriCouncil Policy Statement Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans and conclude that this exceptionalism is unwarranted and ethically unsound In our view the three federal research granting agencies should honor their longstanding commitment that researchers research sponsors and Research Ethics Boards in Canada have access to "a single reference document for all research involving humans conducted under the auspices of institutions eligible for Agency funding" As well responsibility for the …

New Pieces Of The Trichinella Puzzle, Edoardo Pozio, Dante S. Zarlenga
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Contrary to our understanding of just a few decades ago, the genus Trichinella now consists of a complex assemblage of no less than nine different species and three additional genotypes whose taxonomic status remains in flux. New data and methodologies have allowed advancements in detection and differentia- tion at the population level which in turn have demonstrably advanced epidemiological, immunological and genetic investigations. In like manner, molecular and genetic studies have permitted us to hypothe- sise biohistorical events leading to the worldwide dissemination of this genus, and to begin crystalising the evolution of Trichinella on a macro scale. The identification …

Promontory Culture: The Faunal Evidence, Lindsay Deanne Johansson
Promontory Culture: The Faunal Evidence, Lindsay Deanne Johansson
Theses and Dissertations
Following excavations in the Promontory Caves and at several open sites in the Provo River Delta region, Steward (1937) characterized the Promontory culture as large game hunters. He based this on the high number of bison bones recovered within the Caves. Excavations at additional Promontory sites along the Wasatch Front contain faunal assemblages which differ significantly from those in the caves, showing that people living at open sites relied more heavily on small game, waterfowl, and aquatic resources than large game. These differences have been mostly attributed to Steward's sampling strategy and lack of screening, but faunal material recovered during …

DNA polymerases must accurately replicate DNA to maintain genome integrity. Carcinogenic adducts, such as 2-aminofluorene (AF) and N-acetyl-2-aminofluorene (AAF), covalently bind DNA bases and promote mutagenesis near the adduct site. The mechanism by which carcinogenic adducts inhibit DNA synthesis and cause mutagenesis remains unclear. Here, we measure interactions between a DNA polymerase and carcinogenic DNA adducts in real-time by single-molecule fluorescence. We find the degree to which an adduct affects polymerase binding to the DNA depends on the adduct location with respect to the primer terminus, the adduct structure and the nucleotides present in the solution. Not only do the …

"Vinegar Soup Improved His Womb": Food, Appetite, And The Redefining Of Asian American Masculinity In Kingston's China Men, Danielle Crawford
Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies
This paper examines the connection between food, appetite, and gender identity in Maxine Hong Kingston's China Men. Specifically, I argue that Kingston's use of food in China Men reconstructs traditional norms of masculinity. Food, appetite, consumption, and foodways are thus a crucial component in Kingston's larger project of redefining Chinese American masculinity. Drawing off of recent studies regarding the role of food and gender in Asian American literature, my analysis focuses on the characters Tang Ao, Kingston's father and the uncles from the New York laundry, Ah Goong, and Kingston's brother from the Vietnam War. These characters' consumption practices and …

The stemborer Sesamia nonagrioides is an important pest of maize in the Mediterranean Basin. Like other moths, this noctuid uses its chemosensory system to efficiently interact with its environment. However, very little is known on the molecular mechanisms that underlie chemosensation in this species. Here, we used next-generation sequencing (454 and Illumina) on different tissues from adult and larvae, including chemosensory organs and female ovipositors, to describe the chemosensory transcriptome of S. nonagrioides and identify key molecular components of the pheromone production and detection systems. We identified a total of 68 candidate chemosensory genes in this species, including 31 candidate …

The fabrication resolution of electrochemical wet stamping (E-WETS) was enhanced to several hundred nanometers from several ten micrometers by using polycarylamide gel (PAG) as soft stamps and through optimized processes. The PAG stamp was cured on a nanopatterned soft mold and soaked with 0.2 mol·L-1 KCl solution, then contacted with a silicon wafer with gold film and applied with electric field. And the gold nanopatterns were achieved by the selective anodic dissolving, the diameter of fabricated gold spot was around 200 nm. The parameters which affected the fabrication processes have been discussed in detail.

Gene transfer of a human cocaine hydrolase (hCocH) derived from butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) by 5 mutations (A199S/F227A/S287G/A328W/Y332G) has shown promise in animal studies for treatment of cocaine addiction. To predict the physiological fate and immunogenicity of this enzyme in humans, a comparable enzyme was created and tested in a conspecific host. Thus, similar mutations (A199S/S227A/S287G/A328W/Y332G) were introduced into mouse BChE to obtain a mouse CocH (mCocH). The cDNA was incorporated into viral vectors based on: a) serotype-5 helper-dependent adenovirus (hdAD) with ApoE promoter, and b) serotype-8 adeno-associated virus with CMV promoter (AAV-CMV) or multiple promoter and enhancer elements (AAV-VIP). Experiments on …
Motion Artifact Reduction In Impedance Plethysmography Signal, Sardar Ansari
Motion Artifact Reduction In Impedance Plethysmography Signal, Sardar Ansari
Theses and Dissertations
The research related to designing portable monitoring devices for physiological signals has been at its peak in the last decade or two. One of the main obstacles in building such devices is the effect of the subject's movements on the quality of the signal. There have been numerous studies addressing the problem of removing motion artifact from the electrocardiogram (ECG) and photoplethysmography (PPG) signals in the past few years. However, no such study exists for the Impedance Plethysmography (IP) signal. The IP signal can be used to monitor respiration in mobile devices. However, it is very susceptible to motion artifact. …

On March 17, 2011, a month after the beginning of the Libyan revolution, with up to 2,000 civilians dead, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) decided on backing a no-fly zone over Libya and authorized “all necessary measures” to protect civilians. While France, Great Britain, and the United States took immediate military action using air and missile strikes, considerations to hand over military actions to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) emerged within days of the operation. On March 22, 2012, NATO agreed to enforce the arms embargo against Libya; 2 days later, it announced to …
A Model For Sensory Neuron Development By Fgf And Notch: A Multifactorial Approach, Jacob Eugene Voelkel
A Model For Sensory Neuron Development By Fgf And Notch: A Multifactorial Approach, Jacob Eugene Voelkel
Theses and Dissertations
The ophthalmic trigeminal placode (opV) exclusively gives rise to sensory neurons. A number of signaling pathways including Wnt, PDGF, FGF, and Notch are all involved in the progression of an undifferentiated cell in the opV placode to a proneural cell in the condensing opV ganglion. However, the regulatory relationships between these signal transduction pathways are still unknown. To determine if FGF activation acts to modulate Notch signaling in the sensory neurogenesis pathway, a novel multifactorial approach was employed: FGF signaling was inhibited in individual cells and globally with simultaneous inactivation of Notch signaling in chick embryos to investigate if FGF …
A Qualitative Inquiry Into The Treatment Experience Of Adolescent Females In A Relationally Based Therapeutic Boarding School, Douglas S. Marchant
A Qualitative Inquiry Into The Treatment Experience Of Adolescent Females In A Relationally Based Therapeutic Boarding School, Douglas S. Marchant
Theses and Dissertations
Individualism, the assumption that persons are self-contained and primarily act for the sake of the self, is prevalent in American culture and has arguably perpetuated numerous psychological and societal ills. Relationality, the assumption that persons are always and inextricably constituted by relationships, has been posited as a philosophical and practical alternative to individualist culture. Several scholars, both inside and outside of psychology, have developed relational concepts and practices, including some who have elucidated a relational approach to psychotherapy (e.g., Slife and Wiggins, 2009). This study examines the implications and effects of this therapeutic approach, particularly exploring relationality's therapeutic success in …

Does Marriage Therapy Improve Health?, David Marsh, Dr. Julianne Holt-Lunstad
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of marital quality on certain cardiovascular health risks, including diabetes, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels. Relationships, including that of marriage, have long since been known to correlate with these physiological markers (Wickrama, 1997). Our study, however, is different, as it is the first study to include a marriage therapy intervention. This type of study carries with it more weight than just a correlation study, but obviously brings with it more difficulty. We are in the final stages of gathering data. We have studied more than 210 participants and anticipate being …

"You No Real Man": Constructing Gender, Sexuality, And The Asian American Subject In Jana Monji's "Kim", Robin E. Field
Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies
Jana Monji's short story "Kim" offers a stunning plot twist that challenges readers initial interpretations of the characters as well as many assumptions and stereotypes about Asian American identity, gender, sexuality, and culture. Its pedagogical value for introducing basic literary theory, heterogeneity within gender and sexual identities, and Asian American culture and history is immeasurable. In this essay, I offer an overview of the story, my interpretations of the text, and the pedagogical strategies I use to introduce undergraduate students to concepts that often challenge their world views. Ultimately, this story provides instructors with an accessible and multifaceted text through …
The Effect Of Whole Body Vibration On Skin Blood Flow And Nitric Oxide Production, Paula K. Johnson
The Effect Of Whole Body Vibration On Skin Blood Flow And Nitric Oxide Production, Paula K. Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
Background: Vascular dysfunction due to hyperglycemia in individuals with diabetes is a factor contributing to distal symmetric polyneuropathy (DSP). Reactive oxygen species (ROS) reduce the bioavailability of nitric oxide (NO), a powerful vasodilator, resulting in reduced circulation and nerve ischemia. Increases in blood NO concentrations and circulation have been attributed to whole body vibration (WBV). The purpose of this study was to the determine the effects of low frequency, low amplitude WBV on whole blood NO concentration and skin blood flow (SBF) in individuals with symptoms of DSP. Research Design and Methods: Ten subjects with diabetes and impaired sensory perception …

Interspecific Variation In Leaf-Level Biogenic Emissions Of The Bambuseae, Andrea Natalie Melnychenko
Interspecific Variation In Leaf-Level Biogenic Emissions Of The Bambuseae, Andrea Natalie Melnychenko
Dissertations and Theses
Plants emit a diverse range of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) into the atmosphere, of which isoprene is the most abundantly emitted. Isoprene significantly affects biological and atmospheric processes, but the range of isoprene and BVOCs present in bamboos has not been well characterized. In this thesis I explore the range of isoprene emission found in bamboos and relate it to plant morphological and physiological characteristics. In addition, I measure and relate the entire suite of BVOCs present in the bamboos to their fundamental isoprene emission rate.
Interspecific variation in isoprene emission documented in a comprehensive survey of bamboos. Two …

Teaching design to design-illiterate students is usually a common case for every first year class instructor at any design program. In addition to this, a particular combination of extra challenges makes Design Fundamentals at -the University of Alberta- a very special spot to learn and teach design. Most sections of this class are open to students from many other fields and levels, from psychology to engineering, and from first year students to senior students. Masters students, who usually come from various countries, are often appointed as teaching assistants as part of the graduate program experience. Some of them choose to …

Cross-Domain Latent Growth Modeling Of Sexuality, Social Support, And Quality Of Life In Men After Treatment For Prostate Cancer, Catherine Benedict
Open Access Dissertations
Treatment for prostate cancer (PC) often leads to sexual side effects that impact patients, partners, and relationship functioning. Research has focused on the direct effects of sexual dysfunction (i.e., physiologic impairment) on quality of life (QOL); empirical evaluation of psychological and relational domains of sexuality is limited. Psychosocial adjustment to sexual dysfunction (i.e., sexual adjustment) may be one mechanism by which post-treatment sexual side effects impact QOL. Furthermore, the extent to which men perceive their partners as being (un)supportive may affect sexual adjustment processes and QOL. It is unknown how changes in sexual adjustment, partner-specific social support, and QOL are …

Concepts Of Divine Action For A Theistic Approach To Psychology, Brent S. Melling
Concepts Of Divine Action For A Theistic Approach To Psychology, Brent S. Melling
Theses and Dissertations
Recent years have seen increased interest in using theism (the perspective that assumes that God is currently actively in the world) as a conceptual framework for scientific inquiry. This interest has built particular momentum in psychology where several scholars have expressed that traditional naturalistic approaches limit understanding and investigation of psychology's subject matter and thus are insufficient to fully account for human phenomena. Others have previously made the case for the consideration of theism as a legitimate alternative basis for psychological theory, research, and practice. This dissertation begins with that consideration and examines what would be required to move a …
