Teacher Nonverbal Immediacy: A Study Of Its Effect On Student Academic Progress And End Of Course Test Performance In A Rural Alternative High School, Jan Singletary
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Meeting the needs of all students is a continuing challenge for educators. Schools across the nation are designing programs to foster student achievement and graduation. Alternative education programs are gaining in popularity among students who have not succeeded in traditional schools and would previously have dropped out of school. It is essential that teachers connect with students so that students believe teachers care about them and their education. In this quantitative study, a significant correlation was found between students' perception of teacher immediacy, determined with the Nonverbal Immediacy Scale - Observer Report (NIS-O), and their rate of academic progress as …
A Comparison Of General Education Co-Teaching Versus Special Education Resource Service Delivery Models On Math Achievement Of Students With Disabilities, Tammy Nash

Environmental Law, Eleventh Circuit Survey, Travis M. Trimble
Environmental Law, Eleventh Circuit Survey, Travis M. Trimble
Scholarly Works
In 2012, the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, deciding an issue of first impression, held that a party that enters a consent order to settle potential liability under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) is not entitled to pursue a cost recovery action against other potentially responsible parties under section 1073 of the Act, but may only seek contribution from those parties under section 113(f) of the Act. The court also affirmed a decision by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Manage- ment to approve an exploration plan for oil and gas drilling in …
The Constraint Interpretation Of Physical Emergence, James Blachowicz
The Constraint Interpretation Of Physical Emergence, James Blachowicz
Philosophy: Faculty Publications and Other Works
I develop a variant of the constraint interpretation of the emergence of purely physical (non-biological) entities, focusing on the principle of the non-derivability of actual physical states from possible physical states (physical laws) alone. While this is a necessary condition for any account of emergence, it is not sufficient, for it becomes trivial if not extended to types of constraint that specifically constitute physical entities, namely, those that individuate and differentiate them. Because physical organizations with these features are in fact interdependent sets of such constraints, and because such constraints on physical laws cannot themselves be derived from physical laws, …

Independent of the stage of economic development, entrepreneurship plays a significant role for the expansion, job creation and overall economic health within a country. As a leading international indicator of entrepreneurial activity around the world, the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) provides valuable insight into the state of entrepreneurship within and across developed and developing economies. Knowing the entrepreneurial aspirations of country’s residents is particularly relevant to Singapore’s innovation-driven economy given that the country’s prosperity depends largely on the economic activities of its citizens. We describe the key definitions and terms used in the GEM as well as the stages of …

Comparative Approaches To Studying Strategy: Towards An Evolutionary Account Of Primate Decision Making, Sarah F. Brosnan, Michael J. Beran, Audrey E. Parrish, Sara A. Price, Bart J. Wilson
Economics Faculty Articles and Research
How do primates, humans included, deal with novel problems that arise in interactions with other group members? Despite much research regarding how animals and humans solve social problems, few studies have utilized comparable procedures, outcomes, or measures across different species. Thus, it is difficult to piece together the evolution of decision making, including the roots from which human economic decision making emerged. Recently, a comparative body of decision making research has emerged, relying largely on the methodology of experimental economics in order to address these questions in a cross-species fashion. Experimental economics is an ideal method of inquiry for this …

Sfmtp1 And Spmtp1 Cloning And Expression In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae: Potential For The Genetic Engineering Of Arabidopsis Thaliana, Elyssa Rae Garza
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
To evaluate metal tolerance conferred by the overexpression of Metal Tolerance Protein 1 (MTP1) in transgenic non-accumulator plants such as Arabidopsis thaliana, a model system was developed in Saccharomyces cerevisiae containing either SfMTP1 cDNA, from the metal tolerant plant Streptanthus farnsworthianus, or SpMTP1 cDNA, from the hyperaccumulator Streptanthus polygaloides. Nonquantitative RT-PCR showed constitutive expression of MTP1 in both plant species. Alignment of SfMTP1 and SpMTP1 protein sequences shows a gap in SpMTP1 in a variable histidine region known to affect metal transport. Disk assays revealed SfMTP1 cDNA imparted greater Ni tolerance to yeast than SpMTP1 cDNA; however, SpMTP1 showed higher …

The Sustainability Syndicate: Shared Responsibility In A Trans-Organizational Business Model, Sudhi Seshadri
The Sustainability Syndicate: Shared Responsibility In A Trans-Organizational Business Model, Sudhi Seshadri
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This paper proposes design principles for the ‘sustainability syndicate’: shared responsibility among diverse stakeholders for sustainability; an agenda for unifying economic and ethical rationales; and plural governance based primarily on markets, contracts and collaborative relationships. The paper suggests a research agenda directed at issues that constrain sustainability syndicates. Syndication's contributions to sustainability build upon its trans-organizational structures for shared responsibility. Syndication works as an insurance cooperative that reduces the financial burden of risk. In addition, members could rent skill sets from other stakeholders, reduce barriers to entry into bigger projects, and improve efficiencies. As underlying sustainability are both economic and …
Developing Predictive Systems Models To Address Complexity And Relevance For Ecological Risk Assessment, Valery E. Forbes, Peter Calow
Developing Predictive Systems Models To Address Complexity And Relevance For Ecological Risk Assessment, Valery E. Forbes, Peter Calow
Valery Forbes Publications
Ecological risk assessments (ERAs) are not used as well as they could be in risk management. Part of the problem is that they often lack ecological relevance; that is, they fail to grasp necessary ecological complexities. Adding realism and complexity can be difficult and costly. We argue that predictive systems models (PSMs) can provide a way of capturing complexity and ecological relevance cost-effectively. However, addressing complexity and ecological relevance is only part of the problem. Ecological risk assessments often fail to meet the needs of risk managers by not providing assessments that relate to protection goals and by expressing risk …

Business And Climate Change: Trends, Issues And Challenges, Badar Alam Iqbal, Munir Hassan, Bhawana Rawat, Shabib Arslan
Business Review
The present century i.e. 21st Century is the century of Business and Climate. These two issues are getting higher attention from both developed countries and developing economies. On the one hand, business has affecting environment and on the other hand environmental products are boosting business and therefore, there is close relationship between business and climate change . Looking into the growing grave concern from different sections over climate change, considerably due to industrial units, businesses had also started to take initiative in this regard. The paper, henceforth, concentrates on what had so far been done, and what more need to …
Collective Diffusion Over Networks: Models And Inference, Akshat Kumar, Daniel Sheldon, Biplav Srivastava
Collective Diffusion Over Networks: Models And Inference, Akshat Kumar, Daniel Sheldon, Biplav Srivastava
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Diffusion processes in networks are increasingly used to model the spread of information and social influence. In several applications in computational sustainability such as the spread of wildlife, infectious diseases and traffic mobility pattern, the observed data often consists of only aggregate information. In this work, we present new models that generalize standard diffusion processes to such collective settings. We also present optimization based techniques that can accurately learn the underlying dynamics of the given contagion process, including the hidden network structure, by only observing the time a node becomes active and the associated aggregate information. Empirically, our technique is …

Fish Species Distribution In Seagrass Habitats Of Chesapeake Bay Are Structured By Abiotic And Biotic Factors, Jason J. Schaffler, Jacques Van Montfrans, Cynthia M. Jones, Robert J. Orth
OES Faculty Publications
Seagrass habitats have long been known to serve as nursery habitats for juvenile fish by providing refuges from predation and areas of high forage abundance. However, comparatively less is known about other factors structuring fish communities that make extensive use of seagrass as nursery habitat. We examined both physical and biological factors that may structure the juvenile seagrass-associated fish communities across a synoptic-scale multiyear study in lower Chesapeake Bay. Across 3years of sampling, we collected 21,153 fish from 31 species. Silver Perch Bairdiella chrysoura made up over 86% of all individuals collected. Nine additional species made up at least 1% …
The Evolution Of Modular Product Architectures And The Emergence Of Platform Ecosystems, C. Jason Woodard, Eric K. Clemons
The Evolution Of Modular Product Architectures And The Emergence Of Platform Ecosystems, C. Jason Woodard, Eric K. Clemons
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
While a large body of research has examined the advantages and disadvantages of modularity in product design, studies of modularization have tended to focus on settings in which a product’s architecture is determined by a single designer or designers within a single organization. In this paper, we ask whether modularity can arise in a decentralized setting where high-value designs are rewarded but designers’ ability to coordinate with each other and anticipate the consequences of their actions is limited—in short, whether modularity can evolve. To answer this question, we developed an agent-based model in which boundedly rational firms combine components into …

Characterization Of The Gut Microbiota And Colitogenic Bacterial Species In Core 1 O-Glycans Deficient Mice, Maria E. Perez-Munoz
Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Mucus is one important component of the intestinal mucosal barrier, and loss of its functionality is associated with colitis in humans and mice. Mice deficient in core 1 O-glycans (TM-IEC C1galt1-/-) display a thinner mucus layer upon mutation of the glycosyltransferase enzyme (C1GALT1) responsible for core 1 O-glycans attachment, thus constituting an experimental model for human Ulcerative Colitis (UC). Under conventional conditions, these mice experience spontaneous inflammation of the colon. However, the exact role of the microbiota in colitis development in these mice has not been systematically investigated.
Aimed to gain insights into the role of …

Effects Of Ankle Immobilization On Lower Extremity Joint Coupling Variability, Kristin M. Gundy
Effects Of Ankle Immobilization On Lower Extremity Joint Coupling Variability, Kristin M. Gundy
Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations
Human movement is a complex system that encompasses several factors within the body to create coordination. It is not fully understood how the many degrees of freedom (DOF) of the body organize to create movement. Both internal and external influence how the DOF problem works to produce varying movement goals.
The purpose of this study was to better understand the organization patterns of the body by eliminating a DOF. The ankle joint was immobilized to determine if there were differences at the hip and knee joint couplings. It was hypothesized that there would be an increase in movement variability at …
Optimization Of Solar Cell Arrays Using The Fibonacci Search Algorithm, Felicia Tyyan Farrow
Optimization Of Solar Cell Arrays Using The Fibonacci Search Algorithm, Felicia Tyyan Farrow
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
In our energy hungry world, there is a growing demand to develop creative mechanisms to extract, conserve, and use energy from different resources. The use of solar cells to extract and convert solar energy into electrical energy is a growing and popular field of study because solar energy is clean, free, and renewable. One limitation for photovoltaic (PU) or solar technology is its loss in efficiency and availability as a result of shading or partial shading. Shading or partial shading decreases the total capable output power that the PV system can produce because the array is receiving irradiation from the …
Why A 15 Minute Biological Detection System?, Doug Lewis
Why A 15 Minute Biological Detection System?, Doug Lewis
Faculty Publications
The biological defense community needs to take a hard look at the requirements and assumptions we use to develop our biological sensors. Today the point sensors currently deployed or in development can offer at best “near real time” detection. This translates into approximately 10-20 minutes from the time an agent passes over the device until an alarm is issued. Why are we working to develop detection hardware which in reality contributes little to no advantage to an operational environment? Should the DOD resist fielding (in the near term) “near real time” detection systems, and instead field slower (but much more …

Topics In Electromagnetic, Acoustic, And Potential Scattering Theory, Umaporn Nuntaplook
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
With recent renewed interest in the classical topics of both acoustic and electromagnetic aspects for nano-technology, transformation optics, fiber optics, metamaterials with negative refractive indices, cloaking and invisibility, the topic of time-independent scattering theory in quantum mechanics is becoming a useful field to re-examine in the above contexts. One of the key areas of electromagnetic theory scattering of plane electromagnetic waves — is based on the properties of the refractive indices in the various media. It transpires that the refractive index of a medium and the potential in quantum scattering theory are intimately related. In many cases, understanding such scattering …

"Sample Speech I' The Market-Place": The Habermasian Public Sphere In Robert Browning's The Ring And The Book, Anthony Thomas Garcia
English Theses & Dissertations
In The Ring and the Book, Browning presents a spectrum of twelve dramatic monologues to tell a complicated murder story in 17th century Rome. Browning delves into the environs of 17th century Italy in creating the backdrop for the narrative in Books Two, Three, and Four, supplying these voices to provide historical and social context to the private matter of domestic violence. Understanding the function of this leading triad necessitates investigation into the relation of community and public space to the act of uxoricide. The counter-position of "Half-Rome" in Book II and "The Other Half-Rome" in Book III produces …
The Residual Resistance Of The Individual Within The Rhizomatic Hegemony Of The Internet, Emma Katherine Wolfe
The Residual Resistance Of The Individual Within The Rhizomatic Hegemony Of The Internet, Emma Katherine Wolfe
English Theses & Dissertations
Networked cyborgs that exist within the non-hierarchical rhizomatic network of the Internet risk losing the concept of their individuality as our identity becomes less important than the group. However, if the rhizomatic network is thought of as a hegemony that exists on the Internet, we can resist this through the residual notion of individual identity. Since cyborgs must perform in order to exist on the rhizomatic network, they can become aware of and perform their individuality through awareness of the computer medium. There are three methods for networked cyborgs to assert their individuality discussed in this thesis.
The first is …
