Objectives: African Americans (AA) have substantially lower levels of circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) than whites. We compared population-based samples of 25(OH)D in women of African descent from Nigeria and metropolitan Chicago. Methods: One hundred women of Yoruba ethnicity from southwest Nigeria and 94 African American women from metropolitan Chicago were recruited and compared using a standardized survey protocol and the same laboratory assay for 25(OH)D. Results: Mean 25(OH)D levels were 64 nmol/l among the Nigerians and 29 nmol/l among the AA. Only 10% of the values were shared in common between the groups, and 76% of the Nigerians were above …

Evidence Of Formosan Subterranean Termite Group Size And Associated Bacteria In The Suppression Of Entomopathogenic Bacteria, Bacillus Thuringiensis Subspecies Israelensis And Thuringiensis, Cai Wang, Gregg Henderson

Faculty Publications

The Formosan subterranean termite, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki, was studied for its ability to suppress two entomopathogenic bacteria, Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies israelensis (Bti) and thuringiensis (Btt). Different group sizes (50, 25, 10, and no termites [control]) of C. formosanus were placed on well-grown Bti or Btt agar plates. On day 1, the diameters of Bti and Btt colonies in the three treatments containing termites were significantly smaller than in the controls. The diameters of Bti and Btt colonies in the 50-termite treatment were significantly smaller than in the 10-termite treatment. However, neither was significantly different from the 25-termite treatment. This group …

Strategies For Anti-Fibrotic Therapies., Joel Rosenbloom, Fabian A. Mendoza, Md, Sergio A. Jimenez Jul 2013

Strategies For Anti-Fibrotic Therapies., Joel Rosenbloom, Fabian A. Mendoza, Md, Sergio A. Jimenez

Jefferson Institute of Molecular Medicine Papers and Presentations

The fibrotic diseases encompass a wide spectrum of entities including such multisystemic diseases as systemic sclerosis, nephrogenic systemic fibrosis and sclerodermatous graft versus host disease, as well as organ-specific disorders such as pulmonary, liver, and kidney fibrosis. Collectively, given the wide variety of affected organs, the chronic nature of the fibrotic processes, and the large number of individuals suffering their devastating effects, these diseases pose one of the most serious health problems in current medicine and a serious economic burden to society. Despite these considerations there is currently no accepted effective treatment. However, remarkable progress has been achieved in the …

Power, Politics, And Domestic Desire In Octavia Butler’S Lilith’S Brood, Aparajita Nanda Jul 2013

Power, Politics, And Domestic Desire In Octavia Butler’S Lilith’S Brood, Aparajita Nanda

English

Octavia Butler’s works, from her short stories and novellas to her science fiction novels, focus on themes of power, control, bondage, and a desired freedom from servitude. Power structures inevitably center on the master/slave or the captor/captive trope. Her handling of this issue takes on complex manifestations in her works, where enslavement and genetic evolution often form the core of the narrative. Within this framework, hostile and repressive regimes enforce a controlled society. Butler brings race, gender, and sexuality to the foreground of speculative fiction as she deals with complex social and political issues in all their ambiguity. Her handling …

The Other's Other: Negotiating "Normativity" In Contemporary Photography From The United States, Corey Dzenko Jul 2013

The Other's Other: Negotiating "Normativity" In Contemporary Photography From The United States, Corey Dzenko

Art & Art History ETDs

Despite all of the recent attention paid to issues of identity in art history, mainstream ideals of normativity have yet to be fully analyzed and reclaimed as subject positions from which artistic examinations begin. As a symptom of larger culture, there often remains a lack of what sociologist Ruth Frankenberg refers to as cognizance' about the continuing role of normative ideals as they are assumed to be unmarked, or transcendent, positions. While all four of the case studies in this project visually challenge assumptions of normativity, the reception of the work and/or the artist's own descriptions negate some of the …

Wetlands Regulation In An Era Of Climate Change: Can Section 404 Meet The Challenge?, Alyson C. Flournoy, Allison Fischman

UF Law Faculty Publications

This Article raises the question of how we should assess the potential threat to wetlands posed by the impacts of a changing climate and considers the role that section 404 of the Clean Water Act can play both in assessing and responding to that threat. Our inquiry is two-fold. First, should we be concerned about climate impacts on wetlands? And if so, how can section 404 help us to assess and respond to this threat?

Part I surveys the scientific literature on the projected impacts of climate change of particular relevance to wetlands and the impacts anticipated for particular types …

Torture At Home: Borrowing From The Torture Convention To Define Domestic Violence, Claire Wright Jul 2013

Torture At Home: Borrowing From The Torture Convention To Define Domestic Violence, Claire Wright

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

The great majority of U.S. states do not include mental abuse in their definitions of domestic violence, even though mental abuse the most dangerous and pervasive form of domestic violence. Based on a comprehensive review of the psychological theory of domestic violence and numerous laws outlawing bullying, hazing, and torture, this article proposes a new, psychologically sound definition of domestic violence which encompasses mental abuse and at the same time provides protections against infringements of individuals' privacy, free speech, and parental rights. This article concludes that the states' failure to treat mental abuse as domestic violence is greatly facilitating the …

Constitutionalization Of Nongovernmental Certification Programs, Jaye Ellis Jul 2013

Constitutionalization Of Nongovernmental Certification Programs, Jaye Ellis

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

Certification programs created by nonstate actors such as the Forest Stewardship Council and Marine Stewardship Council are innovative and potentially highly effective governance initiatives. This article works from the premise that these Councils can be understood as political authorities promulgating law. These Councils, and other actors like them, are generally analyzed from the point of view of governance, which triggers questions about their effectiveness and legitimacy. The approach adopted here shifts the focus to questions of their authority and the validity of the rules, standards, and decision-making processes that they have put in place. The Councils have put in motion …

Chinese Women In Legal Education, Xiaonan Liu Jul 2013

Chinese Women In Legal Education, Xiaonan Liu

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

This paper examines the history and development of women entering legal education in China. Based on a survey, interviews, and archival research, this paper attempts to analyze Chinese women's current status in legal education and reaches the conclusion that although women have made significant gains in legal education, they are still facing gender discrimination and bias in the legal sector. The paper also looks into the reasons why women have in the past belonged to "the other" in the legal area, and whether there is any conflict between legal characteristics" and "feminine characteristics." It attempts to break the constraint caused …

Characterization Of The Gas-Sensing Protein Cooa, Teryn Gehred, Jessica Lyza Jul 2013

Characterization Of The Gas-Sensing Protein Cooa, Teryn Gehred, Jessica Lyza

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

This research aims to characterize the binding specificity of heme proteins to various gas signal molecules. Heme proteins in the gas-sensing family bind to specific gas signal molecules, causing a certain biological function to be activated or deactivated. In this study, variants of the carbon monoxide sensing heme protein CooA from the bacteria R.rubrum and C. hydrogenoformans are compared. Key differences in signal binding specificity and heme environment configuration will be investigated. This is done by using site-directed mutagenesis to alter the heme environment, isolating the CooA proteins through protein purification, and analyzing the isolated products through DNA binding assays. …

Study Of Ligand Binding Reactions Of Bis-Aminemetalloporphyrins, Frank Wang Jul 2013

Study Of Ligand Binding Reactions Of Bis-Aminemetalloporphyrins, Frank Wang

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Porphyrins are molecular complexes that are critical for the proper functioning of many important biological macromolecules such as hemoglobin and myoglobin. The goal of this research is to monitor the transformations and differences that occur with the addition of metals and ligands to a model porphyrin compound called tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP). During this work, a series of metalloporphyrin complexes were prepared, with changes to both metal centers and ligand attachments at those centers. Specifically, iron, zinc, cobalt and manganese metalloporphyrins have been synthesized and identities verified via electronic absorption spectroscopy. Ligand binding studies have begun with the addition of piperidine and …

Marital Status And Privilege, Laura A. Rosenbury Jul 2013

Marital Status And Privilege, Laura A. Rosenbury

UF Law Faculty Publications

This essay challenges the privilege attaching to marriage as a distinct form of relationship. Responding to Angela Onwuachi-Willig’s new book, According to Our Hearts: Rhinelander v. Rhinelander and the Law of the Multiracial Family, the essay identifies the legal and extralegal privileges flowing not just to monoracial marriage but to marriage. States recognize and support one form of relationship between adults to the exclusion of all others, creating privilege that flows outside of the home into the workplace and beyond. Instead of arguing that such privilege should be distributed more equally between monoracial and multiracial couples, this essay seeks …

Changing Hearts And Minds: The Politics Of Sentimentality And The Cultural Production Of The Gay Family In New Mexico's Same-Sex Marriage Debate, Lavinia Magdalena Nicolae Jul 2013

Changing Hearts And Minds: The Politics Of Sentimentality And The Cultural Production Of The Gay Family In New Mexico's Same-Sex Marriage Debate, Lavinia Magdalena Nicolae

Anthropology ETDs

Starting in February 2004, in the aftermath of San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsoms authorization of city clerks to issue marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples, same-sex marriage and LGBT families moved to the center of American politics. In the same month New Mexico succeeded in making its own mark on the national debate over same-sex marriage as Victoria Dunlap, the Sandoval County clerk, issued marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples. The resulting sixty-four same-sex marriages incited New Mexico gay and lesbian activism around the issue of marriage and launched civil rights and moral debates that dominated the New …

Human Leukocyte Antigens And Cellular Immune Responses To Anthrax Vaccine Adsorbed, Inna G. Ovsyannikova, V. Shane Pankratz, Robert A. Vierkant, Nicholas M. Pajewski, Conrad P. Quinn, Richard A. Kaslow, Robert M. Jacobson, Gregory A. Poland

United States Public Health Resources

Interindividual variations in vaccine-induced immune responses are in part due to host genetic polymorphisms in the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) and other gene families. This study examined associations between HLA genotypes, haplotypes, and homozygosity and protective antigen (PA)-specific cellular immune responses in healthy subjects following immunization with Anthrax Vaccine Adsorbed (AVA). While limited associations were observed between individual HLA alleles or haplotypes and variable lymphocyte proliferative (LP) responses to AVA, analyses of homozygosity supported the hypothesis of a “heterozygote advantage.” Individuals who were homozygous for any HLA locus demonstrated significantly lower PA-specific LP than subjects who were heterozygous at all …

Heterogeneous Nuclear Ribonucleoprotein K Supports Vesicular Stomatitis Virus Replication By Regulating Cell Survival And Cellular Gene Expression, Phat X. Dinh, Anshuman Das, Rodrigo Franco, Asit K. Pattnaik Jul 2013

Heterogeneous Nuclear Ribonucleoprotein K Supports Vesicular Stomatitis Virus Replication By Regulating Cell Survival And Cellular Gene Expression, Phat X. Dinh, Anshuman Das, Rodrigo Franco, Asit K. Pattnaik

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

The heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein K (hnRNP K) is a member of the family of hnRNPs and was recently shown in a genome-wide small interfering RNA (siRNA) screen to support vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) growth. To decipher the role of hnRNP K in VSV infection, we conducted studies which suggest that the protein is required for VSV spreading. Virus binding to cells, entry, and nucleocapsid uncoating steps were not adversely affected in the absence of hnRNP K, whereas viral genome transcription and replication were reduced slightly. These results indicate that hnRNP K is likely involved in virus assembly and/or release from …

Brief 8: International Fisheries Governance That Works: The Case For A Global Fisheries Organization, J. Samuel Barkin, Elizabeth R. Desombre Jul 2013

Brief 8: International Fisheries Governance That Works: The Case For A Global Fisheries Organization, J. Samuel Barkin, Elizabeth R. Desombre

Governance and Sustainability Issue Brief Series

International fisheries are being overexploited, and the current institutional structure in place to manage them is not working effectively. Presently, two sets of intergovernmental institutions oversee global fishing. The first comprises roughly three dozen regional fisheries management organizations (RFMOs), approximately 19 of which are charged with regulating fishing in the areas they oversee. The second set consists of global organizations that touch on but do not directly regulate fisheries issues, such as the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Trade Organization (WTO), the World Bank, and the International Maritime Organization (IMO). This management patchwork is inadequate to …
