The Effect Of Shear Stress, Potassium, And Adenosine On Α-1 Adrenergic Vasoconstriction Of Rat Soleus Feed Arteries, Tanner J. Heckle, Jeffrey Jasperse Jul 2013

The Effect Of Shear Stress, Potassium, And Adenosine On Α-1 Adrenergic Vasoconstriction Of Rat Soleus Feed Arteries, Tanner J. Heckle, Jeffrey Jasperse

Featured Research

During exercise, blood flow increases to the working skeletal muscle primarily because of dilation of the arteries and arterioles feeding the muscle. Sympathetic nerve activity also increases during exercise, augmenting the release of the neurotransmitter norepinephrine (NE) at the arterial wall and into the blood. NE acts to constrict blood vessels; however, arteries and arterioles within contracting skeletal muscle dilate despite the increased NE present. This has led to the concept of functional sympatholysis (4), the idea that a chemical released from contracting skeletal muscle interferes with NE signaling. NE acts by binding to adrenergic (alpha and beta) receptors, and …

An Exploration Of The Impact That Postmodernism Has On Competition In Sport, Shara Crow Jul 2013

An Exploration Of The Impact That Postmodernism Has On Competition In Sport, Shara Crow

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study is to explore the impact that postmodernism has on competition in sport. Previous studies compartmentalized social thought and competition in sport. This study appreciates that the two are connected, and it is through this connectedness that the impact emerges. By describing, finding, and analyzing relationships through text as well as notating text iteratively, it was found through a postmodernist critical awareness to meta-narratives that sport is expressed in two main themes: (a) identity (b) and hierarchy/authority. Moreover, both of these themes are interrelated to social interaction. These findings indicate that social interpretation impacts the complex …

Distribution Of Parasitic Isopods On Caridean Shrimp In South Florida Seagrass Beds, Sarah A. Briggs Jul 2013

Distribution Of Parasitic Isopods On Caridean Shrimp In South Florida Seagrass Beds, Sarah A. Briggs

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Caridean shrimp are a prominent element of seagrass faunal communities and play an important role in the energy transfer between trophic levels. They are a food source for other organisms and play an integral role in the ecosystem by feeding on algae and assisting with the breakdown of organic matter. Carideans are also fundamental to the marine fishery industry in that they are a food source for potentially valuable juvenile commercial fish. Ectoparasitic isopods (Cymothoida: Bopyridae) that infest caridean shrimps decrease the energy level of the shrimp, resulting in slower reaction time, greater predation rate, slower growth rate, and/or reduced …

Effects Of Instructional Model On Student Attitude In An Introductory Biology Laboratory, Stephen M. Rybczynski, Elisabeth E. Schussler

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This study assessed student attitude towards reformed laboratories featuring a factorial design of inquiry (IN) and explicit / reflective (ER) pedagogy to foster nature of science understanding. Students in thirty-one lab sections responded to pre and post semester assessments of their confidence, perception of usefulness, and effectance motivation toward the laboratories. Relative change in attitude (RCA) was not significantly different (p>0.05) among the treatments or their interaction for confidence, usefulness, or effectance motivation. Student self-reports (n = 137) of factors that affected their attitude suggested that grades and TAs played a larger role in determining student attitude than the …

Are We Spending Too Much On Print Stem Monographs? A Method And Analysis For Improving Monograph Allocations Based On Circulation Statistics, Jonathan Nabe Jul 2013

Are We Spending Too Much On Print Stem Monographs? A Method And Analysis For Improving Monograph Allocations Based On Circulation Statistics, Jonathan Nabe

Articles

Circulation studies provide evidence of demand for monographs, but it is necessary to determine the goal of any analysis in order to select which statistics will be used. The goal of this analysis was to determine the appropriateness of expenditures on monographs within the STEM fields at Morris Library over a ten-year period. Percentage of unique title circulation and average circulation per title are best suited for this purpose. Results show variation among discplines, but over-expenditure in all. Analysis of disciplines can aid in determining appropriate allocations for monographs, and analysis of subdisciplines can aid in targeting monograph acquisitions within …

The Role Of Snai2/Slug In Diabetes-Impaired Wound Healing, Krystle K. Quan Jul 2013

The Role Of Snai2/Slug In Diabetes-Impaired Wound Healing, Krystle K. Quan

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Impaired wound healing is a common complication of diabetes mellitus. Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are a consequence of diabetes and are formed from non-enzymatic reactions between glucose and proteins. The accumulation of AGEs is believed to disrupt wound repair and alter protein function. The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and a downstream effector, Snai2/Slug, are key regulators of reepithelialization, a vital component of wound healing. Reepithelialization requires keratinocyte proliferation and migration. Therefore, we examined the impact of AGEs on these EGF-stimulated responses. In this dissertation, I present evidence for a critical role of Snai2 in diabetes-impaired wound reepithelialization, extending …

Division of Infectious Diseases and Environmental Medicine Faculty Papers

Background. Infectious diseases seem to be an important and independent risk factor for renal failure, but the underlying mechanism of renal involvement during some kinds of infectious diseases is still unclear, even if the literature data report immunomediated and/or autoimmune mechanisms to explain the pathogenic relationship between the two diseases. In paediatric patients, Chlamydia pneumoniae is a rare cause of renal complications and it may manifest in several ways, mainly involving the respiratory system, even if also renal and glomerulalr complications, have been described. Case Diagnosis/Treatment. Herein we report a case of a 3-year-old child who developed an acute glomerulonephritis …

The "Positive Effect" Escape Hatch: The Eleventh Circuit's New View Of The Catalyst Theory And The Resulting Difficulty For Plaintiffs To Receive Attorney Fees, Lindsay Schafer Jul 2013

The "Positive Effect" Escape Hatch: The Eleventh Circuit's New View Of The Catalyst Theory And The Resulting Difficulty For Plaintiffs To Receive Attorney Fees, Lindsay Schafer

Mercer Law Review

Environmental plaintiffs now have fewer opportunities to receive attorney fees in the wake of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit's decision in Friends of the Everglades v. South Florida Water Management District (Friends of the Everglades II). In this case the court further narrowed what plaintiffs' civil suits must accomplish to have a "positive catalytic effect." While many circuits, including the Eleventh Circuit, have focused on what it means for a party to be a "prevailing party" under various statutory schemes, and thus receive attorney fees, this case marks the first time the Eleventh Circuit has …

The Association Between Attachment-Related Trauma And Adult Representations Of Attachment And The Role Of Maternal Mental Health, Syreeta Scott Jul 2013

The Association Between Attachment-Related Trauma And Adult Representations Of Attachment And The Role Of Maternal Mental Health, Syreeta Scott

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Despite longstanding theoretical associations in the attachment literature between early experiences of trauma, unresolved attachment representations, and mental health symptoms, few studies have explored associations between these variables, and findings amongst current studies are inconsistent. This study aimed to examine these relationships in a high-risk sample of mothers. It also explored relationships between aspects of trauma, such as type, severity, and age of exposure in relation to unresolved attachment representations. Possible moderating effects of mental health were also examined. Data for the study were collected as part of a larger longitudinal study on women’s transition to motherhood. The present study …

This review of metal-based nanoparticles focuses on factors influencing their distribution into the nervous system, evidence they enter brain parenchyma, and nervous system responses. Gold is emphasized as a model metal-based nanoparticle and for risk assessment in the companion review. The anatomy and physiology of the nervous system, basics of colloid chemistry, and environmental factors that influence what cells see are reviewed to provide background on the biological, physical–chemical, and internal milieu factors that influence nervous system nanoparticle uptake. The results of literature searches reveal little nanoparticle research included the nervous system, which about equally involved in vitro and in …

The Socioeconomic Organization Of Communal Hunting: An Archaeological Examination Of Shoshone Collective Action, Matthew John O'Brien Jul 2013

The Socioeconomic Organization Of Communal Hunting: An Archaeological Examination Of Shoshone Collective Action, Matthew John O'Brien

Anthropology ETDs

This dissertation focuses on developing the means to investigate social organization of communal hunting among egalitarian groups. Communal hunting represents an alternative subsistence strategy that takes advantage of seasonal aggregation of prey species. To maximize returns from these large herds, human foraging groups opt to cooperate with additional groups that otherwise maintain their political independence during the rest of the year. Yet, what is not clear is whether these temporary large camps maintain their egalitarian ethos, giving an equal voice to all members or if the participants adopt an alternative social and political structure. This dissertation uses the case study …

The Effect Of Sympathetic Activation On Gut Microbiota In Obstructive Sleep Apnea, John (Joe) Alcock Jul 2013

The Effect Of Sympathetic Activation On Gut Microbiota In Obstructive Sleep Apnea, John (Joe) Alcock

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Background: Patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) suffer from increased mortality because of complications from metabolic and cardiovascular disease. Excess sympathetic nervous activity and catecholamine exposure contribute to the disease associations of OSA, but the underlying mechanism remains enigmatic. Because catecholamines cause overgrowth of bacteria in the class Enterobacteriaceae in the laboratory, this translational study proposed a role for altered gut microbiota in the complications of OSA. Objectives: We tested the hypothesis that catecholamine excess in disordered sleep alters intestinal microbiota by comparing urinary catecholamines and the fecal microbiome of 24 patients with obstructive sleep apnea and 23 controls. Results: …

Role Of Rab7 In The Pathogenesis Of Charcot-Marie-Tooth Type2b (Cmt2b) Disease, Soumik Basuray Jul 2013

Role Of Rab7 In The Pathogenesis Of Charcot-Marie-Tooth Type2b (Cmt2b) Disease, Soumik Basuray

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) Disease is a group of peripheral neuropathies affecting 1 in 2500 individuals. It is characterized by progressive sensory loss and distal muscle weakness affecting mostly the lower extremities that lead to foot deformities. More than thirty genetic loci are affected in this disease, products of which are involved in axonal trafficking. Rab7 is one such gene that gets mutated in CMT Type2B disease. To date four missense mutants of Rab7 have been identified. L129F, K157N, N161T and V162M amino acid substitutions of Rab7 occur in highly conserved regions. Rab7 is a ubiquitous protein but only the peripheral nerves …

Next-Generation Sequencing: Acquisition, Analysis, And Assembly, Antoine Ho Jul 2013

Next-Generation Sequencing: Acquisition, Analysis, And Assembly, Antoine Ho

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

The process of sequencing a genome involves many steps, and accordingly, this project contains work from each of those steps. Genome sequencing begins with acquisition of sequence data, therefore, a novel biochemistry was utilized and optimized for the Sequencing By Ligation (SBL) process. A cyclic SBL protocol was created that could be utilized to extend sequencing reads in both the 5' and 3' directions, for an increase in read length and thru-put. After sequence acquisition, there is the process of data analysis, and the focus shifted to creating software that could take sequence information and match up the individual reads …
