Aaron E. Bledsoe - The Man Behind The Mask: The Progression Of Masculinity In African American Male Characters As Seen In Films Awarded The Naacp Image Award For Outstanding Actor In A Motion Pictur, Aaron E. Bledsoe
Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program 2013
This qualitative study will examine the way in which the masculinity of African American men is portrayed in films through a textual analysis of the leading male character in movies that have been awarded the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture. I’ll be performing a textual analysis of the following movies: “Flight”, “Book of Eli”, and “The Great Debaters”. Through the analysis of the main character, I discuss the following: types of marginalization experienced in the film, interactions/relations with (African American) women, as well as the importance that his education and/or occupation will play in his …

Nataly Aguirre - Stress, Risk, And Reward In Financial Decision-Making: The Roles Of Probability And Magnitude, Nataly Aguirre
Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program 2013
Considerable research suggests acute stress influences decision-making. There has, however, been a lack of research examining the possibility that separable components of the stress response may influence decision-making differently: the sympatho-adrenomedullary (SAM) and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axes. In the current pilot study, participants engaged in a gambling task where they made choices between decisions of varied probability and magnitude for potential gains of money after being exposed to acute stress (via a variant of the cold pressor task). Further, the timing of the stressor was varied to allow examination of SAM and HPA effects separately. Cortisol and skin conductance were measured. …

Andrew I. Thompson - From Tragedy To Policy: Representations Of Muslims And Islam In U.S. Mainstream Media, Andrew I. Thompson
Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program 2013
Following the terrorist attacks of September 11th came a flood of criticism of Islam and Muslims in the U.S. media. Many saw Islam as the root cause of the attacks, but failed to assess the political or social issues in the Middle East, or even the United States’ role in the region. An example of this is the New York Times’ section that ran immediately after the attacks entitled ‘A Nation Challenged,’ which included titles such as: “Yes, this is about Islam,” “This is a religious war,” “Barbarians at the gate,” and “The one true faith.” This project …

A Prototype Decision Support Tool For Ballast Water Risk Management Using A Combination Of Hydrodynamic Models And Agent-Based Modelling, Fleming T. Hansen, Jesper H. Andersen, Michael Potthof, Thomas Uhrenholdt, Hong D. Vo, Olof Lindén
NSBWO
We report the development of a prototype Decision Support Tool (DST) for modelling the risks of spreading of non-indegenous invasive species via ballast water. The DST constitutes of two types of models: A 3D hydrodynamical model calculates the currents in the North Sea and Danish Straits, and an agent-based model estimates the dispersal of selected model organisms with the prevailing currents calculated by the 3D hydrodynamical model. The analysis is concluded by a post processing activity, where scenarios of dispersal are combined into an interim estimate of connectivity within the study area. The latter can be used as a tool …

Exosomes are nano-sized vesicles produced by healthy and virus-infected cells. Exosomes derived from infected cells have been shown to contain viral microRNAs (miRNAs). HIV-1 encodes its own miRNAs that regulate viral and host gene expression. The most abundant HIV-1-derived miRNA, first reported by us and later by others using deep sequencing, is the trans-activation response element (TAR) miRNA. In this study, we demonstrate the presence of TAR RNA in exosomes from cell culture supernatants of HIV-1-infected cells and patient sera. TAR miRNA was not in Ago2 complexes outside the exosomes but enclosed within the exosomes. We detected the host miRNA …

Schistosomiasis japonica is a major parasitic disease threatening millions of people in China. Though overall prevalence was greatly reduced during the second half of the past century, continued persistence in some areas and cases of re-emergence in others remain major concerns. As many regions in China are approaching disease elimination, obtaining quantitative data on Schistosoma japonicum parasites is increasingly difficult. This study examines the distribution of schistosomiasis in eastern China, taking advantage of the fact that the single intermediate host serves as a major transmission bottleneck. Epidemiological, population-genetic and high-resolution ecological data are combined to construct a predictive model capable …

Obstetrics and Gynecology Faculty Publications
Several recent, large-scale studies have provided valuable insights into patient perspectives on postmenopausal vulvovaginal health. Symptoms of vulvovaginal atrophy, which include dryness, irritation, itching, dysuria, and dyspareunia, can adversely affect interpersonal relationships, quality of life, and sexual function. While approximately half of postmenopausal women report these symptoms, far fewer seek treatment, often because they are uninformed about hypoestrogenic postmenopausal vulvovaginal changes and the availability of safe, effective, and well-tolerated treatments, particularly local vaginal estrogen therapy. Because women hesitate to seek help for symptoms, a proactive approach to conversations about vulvovaginal discomfort would improve diagnosis and treatment.

This study examined how individuals’ satisfaction with their family, as well as the ways they negotiated the telling of a family story, combined to predict their perceived quality of the storytelling interaction. Drawing from family members’ (150 individuals, 50 families) joint telling of an often told family story, multilevel modeling analyses revealed significant variance within and between families’ perceived quality of their storytelling interaction. These variances were explained by family satisfaction and family-level ratings of engagement during storytelling. These findings drive our suggestions for future assessment of multiple members’ perspectives of joint family storytelling interactions.

Protein therapeutics hold a prominent and rapidly expanding place among medicinal products. Purified blood products, recombinant cytokines, growth factors, enzyme replacement factors, monoclonal antibodies, fusion proteins, and chimeric fusion proteins are all examples of therapeutic proteins that have been developed in the past few decades and approved for use in the treatment of human disease. Despite early belief that the fully human nature of these proteins would represent a significant advantage, adverse effects associated with immune responses to some biologic therapies have become a topic of some concern. As a result, drug developers are devising strategies to assess immune responses …
Observation, Characterization And Modeling Of Memristor Current Spikes, Ella Gale, Ben De Lacy Costello, Andrew Adamatzky
Observation, Characterization And Modeling Of Memristor Current Spikes, Ella Gale, Ben De Lacy Costello, Andrew Adamatzky
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
Memristors have been compared to neurons (usually specifically the synapses) since 1976 but no experimental evidence has been offered for support for this position. Here we highlight that memristors naturally form fast-response, highly reproducible and repeatable current spikes which can be used in voltage-driven neuromorphic architecture. Ease of fitting current spikes with memristor theories both suggests that the spikes are part of the memristive effect and provides modeling capability for the design of neuromorphic circuits.
Chaos Synchronization Of Complex R?Ssler System, Ahmed A. M. Farghaly
Chaos Synchronization Of Complex R?Ssler System, Ahmed A. M. Farghaly
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
This paper presents chaos synchronization between two identical chaotic systems via nonlinear control technique. The used system is complex R?ssler system. The maximal Lyapunov exponent and the sensitivity on initial conditions are calculated of such system and they emphasis its chaotic behavior. The nonlinear control method has been applied successfully to synchronize the proposed system. Based on Lyaponov function the control input vectors are selected and activated to achieve synchronization. Finally, the numerical simulation are used to show the robustness and effectiveness of proposed method.
Lag Synchronization Of Hyperchaotic Complex Nonlinear Systems Via Passive Control, Emad E. Mahmoud
Lag Synchronization Of Hyperchaotic Complex Nonlinear Systems Via Passive Control, Emad E. Mahmoud
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In this paper we study and investigate the Lag synchronization (LS) of hyperchaotic complex nonlinear systems by using passive control theory. LS of these hyperchaotic complex systems via passive control has not received enough attentions, as far as we know, in the literature. Based on the property of the passive system the passive controller is stated to achieve LS of two identical hyperchaotic complex Lorenz systems. These complex systems appear in many important fields of physics and engineering. The analytical results of the controllers, which have been calculated by using our scheme, are tested numerically and good agreement is obtained.

Series Solutions Of Magnetohydrodynamic Peristaltic Flow Of A Jeffrey Fluid In Eccentric Cylinders, R. Ellahi, A. Riaz, S. Nadeem, M. Mushtaq
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In this article, the mathematical modelling on magnetohydrodynamic peristaltic flow of Jeffrey fluid in the gap between two eccentric tubes has been discussed in the presence of applied magnetic field. Geometrically, we considered two eccentric tubes in which the inner tube is rigid while the tube at the outer side has a sinusoidal wave propagating along the wall. The governing equations for Jeffrey fluid in a cylindrical coordinates for three dimensional flow are given. The approximations of low Reynolds number and long wavelength have been employed to reduce the highly nonlinear partial differential equations. The problem has been solved with …
Fractional Riccati Equation Rational Expansion Method For Fractional Differential Equations, Yongfeng Zhang, Qinghua Feng
Fractional Riccati Equation Rational Expansion Method For Fractional Differential Equations, Yongfeng Zhang, Qinghua Feng
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In this paper, a new fractional Riccati equation rational expansion method is proposed to establish new exact solutions for fractional differential equations. For illustrating the validity of this method, we apply it to the nonlinear fractional Sharma-Tasso- Olever (STO) equation, the nonlinear time fractional biological population model and the nonlinear fractional foam drainage equation. Compared with the existing results in the literature, more exact solutions are obtained by the proposed method. We also illustrate the application of the established exact solutions.
